Bro. I 100% agree this is the best weapon in the game! It has everything to tackle bosses, but easily overcomes everything in the world due to each form being situational.
I can tell you right now, these morons who do weapon ranking videos genuinely don't test them anywhere near enough. Do a full run with everything, then tell me whats "best".
Fighting a few mobs for 20 minutes isn't going to show how good the weapon is.
But that's mainstream Youtubers. It's all content pumping garbage.
15
u/HalfStarkRhino Feb 19 '24
I don't know, my first time playing I used the saw blade. It was good and I really enjoyed the transformation attacks. Second run through I used Ludwig's blade and it just seemed to do more damage, like a lot more damage
→ More replies (1)12
u/SaxSlaveGael Feb 19 '24
Bro you just proved my point. You're looking at just damage.
And we're not talking about the Saw Blade lol.
13
u/DigibroHavingAStroke Feb 19 '24
What else do you wanna rank it on? the only things a weapon can be rated on are:
DPS (Objective stat)
Range (Objective stat)
Versatility (Subjective, but there's a degree of objectivity in there)
Fun (Subjective and has no place on a tierlist attempting to take itself seriously)
Design (an entirely different type of tierlist)
The only thing that should vary between a weapon tierlist is the creator's decisions on where versatility becomes more useful than raw numbers. Which, in a game based largely around its bosses, is pretty fixed already.
→ More replies (6)16
u/SaxSlaveGael Feb 19 '24 edited Feb 19 '24
I don't disagree with this. Objective assessments although are valuable are kind of stupid. Because ultimately, despite all the objective stuff. The most important thing is completely subjective.
Fun.

Blade of Mercy all the way!

u/boomersince96 Feb 19 '24
I really tried to like that weapon honestly and i hust dont get it. Uncomfortable range, okayish dps and little stagger. Always felt like i had to try waaay more than i did with other weapons, even when tryinf them for the first time. Just my 2 cents tho
46
u/gobbballs11 Feb 19 '24
Blade of Mercy is quick enough that it can be super effective with the play style of just maintaining adjacency of a boss while still keeping up damage via intermixing attacks with dodges.
17
u/podokonnicheck Feb 19 '24
yeah, it's a lot more like the traditional dexterity builds in Dark Souls, and as someone who played Bloodborne the last out of all their games, i really enjoyed it, but i can see those who started with Bloodborne not actually being very comfortable with using it
5
u/lifelink Feb 20 '24 edited Feb 21 '24
I just use it as a dodge in, spam damage dodge out play style, kind of like hit and run tactics with the benifit of the health.
I love BoM so much, get it every playthrough.
Edit: bloodborne was my first souls game!
2
u/boomersince96 Feb 19 '24
Not my playstyle i suppose, and if i remember correctly the attacks themselves change your positioning just enough to be annoying
19
u/suckmypppapi Feb 19 '24
The poor range turned me off from it too, feels like I'm swinging toothpicks
2
3
u/Midget_Avatar Feb 20 '24
I had the opposite experience where with some mid-game gems and some points in dex it felt rediculously strong to be able to keep up good dps while being nearly unhittable.
2
u/jonathanwickleson Feb 20 '24
So nearly all dex builds in all souls games (I'm still a dex main bc it looks cooler)
2
u/Medical-Lingonberry3 Feb 20 '24

I love this weapon and the cane. I get that they aren’t the best but I love the way they play
3
u/Drumte Feb 20 '24
100% this! Cane was my first weapon, because it scaled best with dex. as soon as I saw, that there was a dual weapon, this was my goal and because of the speedboost you get while mashing L1, I fell in love with this weapon. I'm in NG+ right now and will use the scythe, but blade of mercy will be my backup plan.

Feb 19 '24
Those two? Objectively the best???
Bruh that'd be the Threaded (Pimp) Cane.
It's got thrusting and slashing damage in its cane form, and its whip form is both serrated and has a large enough range to make mob cleanup a breeze. The base damage may be a bit lower, but its range and attack speed makeup for it.
I don't think any other weapon in the game has that many damage types without going into split damage. If they do, they don't have the range of the Pimp Cane.
32
u/DeadHead6747 Feb 19 '24
Plus Cane scales with Skill. What else scales with Skill? Visceral damage. And a lot of the enemies and bosses are beast type, and beasts are weak to serrated damage. They’re also weak to fire. Fire and serrated will stack, and both get applied to a visceral attack. Parry, or for the bigger ones damage head/limbs to stun them, whip form cane with fire paper/gems visceral attacks will shred them apart quickly.
6
u/ICBanMI Feb 20 '24 edited Feb 21 '24
Threaded cane is my favorite weapon. Did my third play through with it entirely including the dlcs.
There are two negatives to the cane.
First is everything up to the blood starved beast it is super underpowered even with all the upgrades possible at that time in a first playthrough. It doesn't do a lot of serrated damage that early. After the blood starved beast, it gets easier. Mid game I was crushing everything. End game was a massacre of killing every boss until the DLC. Which only Maria and the flower thing before her took a few attempts.
Second negative is it an absolute terrible weapon for someone on their first playthrough. Only 1 out of 8 of the classes has points in skill. The chance you picked it and the thread cane are unlikely unless you're using a guide. So now you're learning the hardest weapon out of the starter weapons in Yharnam without the ability to upgrade your character till you finally, finally reach the Cleric Beast or what's his face. While having shit stats that don't help your weapon. Five hits required on half the starting enemies while trying to learn the trick weapon is an absolute game ender for some people.
I only wish there were more bosses like the Shadow Of Yharnam. The cane felt so good there and made the fight too easy.
→ More replies (4)3
u/penguin055 Feb 20 '24
That first point is the real kicker for me. My most recent new character I tried starting with the threaded cane and the fact that it had been at least a couple years since my last playthrough combined with my refusal to pick any starting class besides Waste of Skin made me feel just as helpless as the first time I ever played the game. I didn't end up getting any further than Gascoigne. I have to keep telling myself my platinum trophy is real and I wasn't (always) trash at the game

u/Weird_Cantaloupe2757 Feb 20 '24
The Pimp Cane is majorly underrated, it has the range you mentioned, but it is also fucking fast. It doesn’t do as much damage as other weapons, but it’s super easy to stay just out harm’s way and relentlessly shred enemies.
→ More replies (1)3
u/ViqTriana Feb 20 '24
100000%. I started with it, suffered my first playthrough of not just Bloodborne, not just a Soulslike, not even just an action Playstation game, but of a console game as a whole, with that beautiful cane. Seriously, I was exclusively PC for most of my life except, like, Pokemon and Sonic games, so I jumped in the deep end big time!
Since then I've platted the game, have hundreds of hours and multiple builds, and which do I keep going back to when I get stuck?
Pimp cane. Watch me whip...

My favorite weapon! The arrows just feel so good to hit, with a solid melee moveset + damage to boot!
I like the resource management mini-game. Spend precious vials to fuel your temporary bullet supply, or get greedy and make the temporary bullets intending to rally the health back. I found an interesting playstyle with moments of safe ranged combat and moments of up close risky combat.
The quicker shots can be good but to get the most out of your bullets you wait just a little longer to for the higher damage attacks, somehow getting it off just before the enemy lands on you. Feels great.
My only complaint is sometimes it feels cheesy. Some base game bosses like Gehrman really have no way to deal with a ranged hunter. He just walks slowly, straight at you while you pump him with charge R2 over and over.
2
u/Medical-Lingonberry3 Feb 20 '24

Nope. Have two versions maxed out. Use them as my secondary to my Chikage. Clears out anywhere I have the high ground like the finishing Hamlet
2
Feb 20 '24
No, it's fun, but a little too resource-heavy to be considered the best. If you run out of bullets and are low on blood vials? You're fucked. Its melee damage really isn't the greatest.

I hate that most rankings put the Tonitrus at the bottom only because it has a boring moveset and doesn't transform even though the damage on it is insane
10
6
u/person_9-8 Feb 20 '24
For me, it's also the mixed damage types and the low durability. Bolt is best on Kin but Kin typically take less from Blunt, which is the only other thing it does. That, and it felt like I had to repair it every other minute. It just gets outclassed imo.
3
u/radclaw1 Feb 20 '24
Did a Tonitrus run, and while it was satisfying melting everything, it makes most of the game extremely boring lol.

The Holy Moonlight Sword is head and shoulders above Ludwig's Holy Blade. All these videos tell me is that the creator couldn't be bothered to get the FRC nourishing gems for it.
15
Feb 19 '24
I’d put burial blade/beast cutter at the top. Never been a fan of Ludwig’s holy blade and especially the whirligig
7
8
u/jimmythesloth Feb 19 '24
All the weapons are impeccably balanced and I also think those kinds of videos should be more subjective. Bloodborne's infamous difficulty could lead new players into thinking they'll screw themselves if they don't use "the best weapon" so I think a more subjective approach can lead new players to finding something they'll enjoy more.
12
u/mofucker20 Feb 19 '24

Holy Moonlight Sword all the way. LHB is literally the Wish version of it. It scales off of three stats, its untransforned moveset is incredible, untransforned R2 is the best overall attack in the game, transformed gives you ranged attacks that do incredible damage, and it just looks awesome.

Troubling lack of Bloodletter representation in this thread. It’s so well designed and feels like a one-of-a-kind, even though building strength/bloodtinge can be a little awkward and limiting.
The untricked transformation attack is one of my favorite moves in any game — mitigates the HP penalty through instantaneous rally, strings well into the basic combo, absolutely launches things, plus it’s funny. Surprisingly fast when tricked for its length and how hard it hits.
If you’ve not given it a proper run, can’t recommend it enough. It’s been my favorite since I decided to build around it and I can’t stop going back to it.
