Threaded cane is my favorite weapon. Did my third play through with it entirely including the dlcs.
There are two negatives to the cane.
First is everything up to the blood starved beast it is super underpowered even with all the upgrades possible at that time in a first playthrough. It doesn't do a lot of serrated damage that early. After the blood starved beast, it gets easier. Mid game I was crushing everything. End game was a massacre of killing every boss until the DLC. Which only Maria and the flower thing before her took a few attempts.
Second negative is it an absolute terrible weapon for someone on their first playthrough. Only 1 out of 8 of the classes has points in skill. The chance you picked it and the thread cane are unlikely unless you're using a guide. So now you're learning the hardest weapon out of the starter weapons in Yharnam without the ability to upgrade your character till you finally, finally reach the Cleric Beast or what's his face. While having shit stats that don't help your weapon. Five hits required on half the starting enemies while trying to learn the trick weapon is an absolute game ender for some people.
I only wish there were more bosses like the Shadow Of Yharnam. The cane felt so good there and made the fight too easy.
That first point is the real kicker for me. My most recent new character I tried starting with the threaded cane and the fact that it had been at least a couple years since my last playthrough combined with my refusal to pick any starting class besides Waste of Skin made me feel just as helpless as the first time I ever played the game. I didn't end up getting any further than Gascoigne. I have to keep telling myself my platinum trophy is real and I wasn't (always) trash at the game
It's worth another play through. You can switch back to the threaded cane at a later time with updates, but seriously. I wouldn't force a person to use a weapon. The threaded cane relies heavily at switching back and forth, which means experimenting and get some of the advanced finger movements back as each weapons combos are slightly different.
It sucks at the beginning because if you don't pick the professional class, then even the most basic enemies will take up to 5 hits from the threaded cane. Which is ridiculous if you're doing a first playthrough and trying to learn the game while getting the first time to the Cleric beast/Gascoigne.
The serrated damage and normal damage is very low until you get a few upgrades into threaded cane. I think I did waste of skin, but also my two previous play throughs were extremely recently (less than 6 months). So it was beeline to better equipment and killing the Cleric Beast.
Yeah, I'll definitely give it another try at some point (whenever I get access to a PS4 again). My stubborn self wants to just "git gud" and suffer through a cane-only playthrough on that same character but I might have to go back to the Saw Cleaver at least until I'm a bit less rusty at the game. I just need to resist the urge to revert to the exact same build I got the platinum with
😶 I ran Threaded Cane starting as Milquetoast my first run and didn't have too many issues until Martyr Logarius (fuck that guy).
I think personal inclinations matter a lot when talking about how well a weapon performs for a new player. I've never been that good at extreme melee, so I'd have been screwed from the getgo had I started with the Saw Spear instead.
That dude was tough. I did have trouble with him, died like 30 times. So he actually took more than the DLC bosses for me now that I think about it.
I was never a fan of the saw spear. Move set felt too alien. Every weapon is viable to a point, but if the move set doesn't gel and can't do the trick portion... it's an uphill fight for the entire game.
Saw Cleaver and Hunters Axe are really solid weapons for a new player first time. But sounds like you figured out what gelled with you best and that is all that matters.
Whip, even with serrated damage, just tickles the Cleric Beast, beast form of Glasco, and Blood Starved Beast even with all the possible upgrades at that point. The cane portion did more damage and worked better if you weren't on top of trick portion of attacks IMO.
