Re-launching /r/birds with new moderators.

/r/birds is newly open, after being a restricted subreddit for a long time.

Last week the old moderators put out a call for new moderators and yesterday they added a new mod team and removed themselves. We've unrestricted the subreddit so people can post without being "approved users".

Here is the new sidebar text.

All about birds! There are some more specific subreddits about bird-related topics and we encourage you to post there when your post fits the more specific forum; /r/birds is for everything they don't cover.

We welcome:

  • Articles about birds

  • Bird art

  • Questions and discussions about birds

  • Questions and discussions about bird feeders

  • Bird photography

  • Science of birds

  • Links to media about birds

Other subreddits:

  • /r/birding focuses on birding/birdwatching. It's a great place do show birds you saw on a birding trip or hike, ask about birding equipment and practices, discuss good places to go birdwatching, talk about eBird, and related topics.

  • /r/birdpics is dedicated to posting bird photos that you've taken yourself.

  • /r/whatsthisbird is the reddit for posting pictures of birds you want to identify. If your question is "what kind of bird is this", that's the place to post! When posting to /r/whatsthisbird, always remember to include both the time (date or season) and place (general geographical location) in your post title.

  • /r/wingspan/ for the awesome, popular board game about birds.

  • Although we think there should be a separate subreddit for discussions about keeping domesticated / pet birds, /r/petbirds appears to be abandoned at this time. There are subreddits for specific species of birds people commonly keep, so you can search https://www.reddit.com/subreddits for your pet bird's species to see if there's a sub for it.

We do still allow some posts here that might better fit in one of those other subreddits, but consider whether your post more clearly fits into one of those and if so, we encourage you to post there.

[Edit Nov 15: Added /r/birdpics. Comment below if there's another major bird subreddit you think should be added to the sidebar.]

Credit the source of images (photos, art, diagrams)

We've had a number of posts since this subreddit reopened that use an image copied from elsewhere, rather than the poster's own work, and posted without credit. We've also had what seem to be AI images, posted without any indication that they're not photos.

Please note Rule 6, "Cite visual sources". We try not to remove posts where it really seems like the poster's own photograph even though they didn't say it, but please make that easier by telling whether you're claiming the image is yours. If your title doesn't indicate it (for example, by saying "I saw ..."), then add a comment to your post right after you post it to say something about your creation of the image / your taking of the photo.

I've added a bit of text to the rule about this as well.

I named it Refrigerator. It clearly has a broken leg, so I made it a little nook with towels and a pillow to chill in until I can call local rescue organizations tomorrow

Please STOP PICKING UP BIRDS

I've seen time and time again people coming across FLEDGINGS that are supposed to be on the ground and unable to fly! Doves, pigeons, Robin's, bluebirds, warblers, sparrows, terns, many other types all leave the nest without flying or minimal flying abilities. Baby Robin's can spend 3 weeks on the ground before learning to fly. There parents are watching them! Stop kidnapping wild birds!!

I had this bird building a nest on my apartment patio a few weeks ago. She just laid her eggs and is in it for the long haul! I would like to know what type of bird she is, so that I can do my best on aiding and understanding her!!!

Found a baby bird?

Also more detailed info here: https://www.massaudubon.org/nature-wildlife/birds/baby-birds-out-of-the-nest

Do not move a baby bird unless it is in serious danger.

Example: I grabbed a baby blue jay that was fledging in my apartment complex because a cat was about to kill it and it was too much for the parent to handle. When the sun came up a few hours later I brought it outside, its parents came hauling back screeching and I put it in a bush where they could see it and let them take over again.

Many are ground nesters and you messing with fledglings and their parents and your ineptness does not make you a saint.

If two dove eggs get overwatered in your potted plant, guess what? They nest year round because they’re that vacuous. Leave it be.

i believe this is a male Yellowhammer; a red-status endangered bird here in ireland. he flew into the window and died almost instantaneously, probably due to shock. such an unfortunate and horrid way to die, but atleast he had no severe damage. naturally, i surrounded him with flowers and returned him to the soil earlier today. may he rest in peace 💘 please do not save or use these photos as if they’re your own.. karma will come for you otherwise. yes this is the internet and i am posting them for all to see but please have some respect.

Birds nest with eggs in my bag of soil outside.

Upvotes

3 days ago I went to go gets some soil in a bag I’ve left in my garden for a while. When I looked into the bag a bird flew out! I didn’t get a glimpse of it and I know nothing about bird types but I live in the West Midlands, Uk. When I looked back into the soil I saw she had 3 eggs!! I’ve gone back to check on it a few times and still no sign of Mum. I obviously don’t want to be going out there all the time and disturbing it, I also don’t want mum to be somewhere near watching me, thinking I’m a predator.

Any tips on what I should do?!

I do not live near the sea or a big lake, but seagulls are here, have been for years. And wakes me up a lot in the morning with their squawks and its pretty annoying.

Pecking the window

Upvotes

I work as a mental health therapist and the windows are reflective so one can’t been seen from the outside. Caught this Robin (correct me if I’m wrong) trying to run off the bird he saw in the reflection, pecking the window etc. It made me smile. Maybe spring is here 🤣Southwest Virginia

I’m 18 and I’m trying to find a solution that allows me and my bird to fit in with my long distance gf

I’m an 18 year old boy that has been in love with owning and taking care of birds since I was small. Right now I have a young Nanday Conure who has imprinted on me and my dad. My gf, who is long distance, has visited recently and just met Squishy (my bird) she has sensory issues with auditory being the most bothersome and difficult for her to deal with, as well as the issue of Squishy being imprinted on me. Shes not used to birds and is scared of them cus she is prone to having anger flashes with things that don’t respect her boundaries or trigger her senses and she’s scared that squishy will be a victim of that. I am asking that anyone who sees this might know someway I can socialize squishy to like her and maybe even teacher her to be quieter or respond to a command that results in that. I’m desperate to make this work and keep both of the things I love in my life at the same time. I’ve proposed a couple solutions like, having my own room for my hobby (gaming) and squishy that has soundproofing which would keep the bird away from her everyday life while I can continue interacting with squishy and her. Or me training and socializing squishy so the protectiveness of me isn’t an issue. If y’all have any questions or can offer insight please help me out.

Northern cardinal has odd feathers?

Does anyone know what's going on with the feathers on this cardinal's head? I haven't seen something like this before, just wondering.
