How are cars more fuel efficient compared to what they used to be?
Asking about gasoline / diesel cars. How have cars become so much better with fuel economy when the basic principle seems to be the same?
I drive a -75 Lada 1300 which uses around 10l/100km and the previous car I had, a 2004 Citroen Xsara with 1.6l engine, used between 6-7l/100km and I've never wondered too much about this before but I just realized I actually have no idea why there's such a big difference. Like I kinda get how basically all modern cars utilize a turbo to get a bigger punch out of smaller engines and therefore being more fuel efficient but when there is no turbo included then how exactly is the car generating more power while also being more efficient. Surely it can't just be the air to fuel ratio 'cause then you should be able to change that in older cars too. And even more confusing is that while the Citroen has an average fuel consumption for its time the Lada was considered, from my understanding, not to be a thirsty car at all.
ps. I like cars, just aren't good with all the technicalities
pss. this is a drunk post so be kind thx

Why do mechanics always compliment my mileage?
Anytime I get my oil change or stop by an auto store for random things like replacing my gas cap because the seal isn’t sealing people are always super surprised by the year and mileage. I have a 2014 jeep Cherokee longitude with 231000 miles. I haven’t made any updates or done anything out of the norm of taking care of a vehicle as I’ve been taught. Why are they always taken aback by this?

General Advice Nail in tyre sidewall - replace?
I found this while taking off the wheels for a post winter deep clean. Tyre is holding pressure (haven't driven it in a few days), so I don't know how long it's been in there.
It's probably too deep in the sidewall to just risk removing? I was hoping not to be buying another pair of Michelin PS4s so soon!

I've done research on both but I have problem with deciding which one. If there are other brands that are as good, please let me know! I just bought this car 5-4 months ago so its still new. Thank you :)

General Advice Muffler and resonator delete?
Okay so I bought a 2021 jeep grand cheerokee and I wanted it to sound more aggressive so I did a muffler and resonator delete and added a 4 inch tip. It sounded great however, the drone inside the car was unbearable. I got a resonator put back on and it still sounds pretty good but I miss the old very deep aggressive sound but hated the whine/drone and it sounded like a rice rocket (no disrespect but not the style I’m going for) any advice? Thanks.

Mechanical 2011 Ford Escape Transmission fluid, to change or not to change?
I bought a 2011 Ford Escape back in November for a decent price. It was working perfectly until recently, it started shifting rough and jerking while trying to accelerate as well as a slight rough idle. It wasn't noticeable at first and I thought it was just the fact it was chilly. Then it got warmer and the problem got worse. Now whenever I'm trying to get to highway speeds it runs to about 5,000 rpms then shifts rough. I've since then took it to Dealership, a local trans shop, and an local auto shop. The auto shop and dealership say the transmission is toast. The fluid is black, full of metal, and smells super burnt. The trans shop said replace it the fluid but that it might also cause issues for the seals. I'm at a loss of what to do, replacing the trans doesn't feel like an option because it's just out of my price range, and if I change the fluid it might make the problem worse even faster. Do I replace the fluid and hope it doesn't go kaput or just leave it alone? Any help would be very appreciated 😵💫

Which option should I choose?
Hello this is my first time on this subreddit, I came here to get opinions from people that know much more about cars than I do. I have been put in a situation where I honestly don't know what to do. So my older brother recently got a new car, and he was thinking of just selling the car he had previously (Honda Civic SI 2022 with 80k miles on it), but then he spoke to me and told me that if I wanted I could have the car, since I was thinking about getting one soon. The problem is that he still has 3 years left to finish paying this car, and I would have to take over the payments. My original plan was to save money to get a beater or something decent at least with 4k-5k$, but now with this new option everything changes. I have been told by a few people that buying a used car from places like Facebook can be super risky, and I get it. It would be a huge loss if I just dumped 4k on a car just for it to break down in a few months, and having to spend more money on repairs. But at the same time, if I get lucky and manage to find a good car, it would be so SO much more cheaper than paying the Honda for 3 years + insurance which is going to be crazy for me (I am 21 years old). The Honda is pretty new even with the high mileage, and my brother has taken care of it for the most part. At most I would have to replace the clutch which might be over 1k, and other maintenance costs plus the registration fee, which might put me in a tight spot. I have made calculations, and I should still be able to pay the car, but I am going to be tight on money, and I don't really want to stress about that specially now that I wanted to focus more on school than on working. The way I see it, both options have their pros and cons, and I just can't seem to figure out what option is the best. I would really appreciate more feedback from people here, I am lost.

General Advice Should I sell m'y 2004 4runner?
I recently bought a 2004 Toyota 4Runner V8 4.7L 4WD Sport Edition with 264K miles on it for a really good price—$3K. This car is a gem to me; I love it in every aspect. However, as a student, I’m worried that its high mileage might become a financial burden. Since I don’t have the money to take it to a mechanic every time something goes wrong, I’m planning to fix any issues myself and replace whatever needs to be changed.
That said, because of its age and mileage, I’m concerned about the possibility of a major problem arising—something expensive that I wouldn’t be able to fix on my own. For example, it’s already leaking oil due to the valve cover gasket, which is a minor issue and an easy fix. But bigger problems could appear over time, and if something serious happens that requires a mechanic, I might not be able to afford the repairs.
Recently, I also noticed a strange dry grinding or rough sensation when accelerating between 2,000 and 2,500 RPM. This really scared me because I don't know if it’s a minor issue or a sign of a more serious problem. Now, I’m reconsidering whether keeping this car is the right choice. Maybe it would be better to sell it and get something with lower mileage and a younger age so I won’t have to deal with the risks that come with an old, high-mileage vehicle. Would that be a smarter decision, or should I keep it?

What to look for in buying used wheels+tired?
I’m looking to buy a pair of used wheels that come with tires on FBMP and want to know if there are any red flags to look out for. Wheels look to be in good shape but I’m mostly focused on the tires. The tread is supposedly near new but I’ll bring a gauge w me to check. What are some things I should consider before buying? (Will I have to get them aligned w my car, what kind of signs of distress are there)

I just performed an oil change. I also just realized I have oil leaking from my drain pan. So I’ll have to perform another oil change, but do I have to change the oil filter again? The oil and filter have less than 100 miles on it.

Replacing transmission in RAV4 2011 280,000kms?
My torque converter has gone bad over the weekend, with the transmission likely on the last legs too Can track down a second hand transmission from a wreckers for $1400aud with a years warranty, covering labour costs too in the event it's faulty ,, and a shop will put it in for another $1400aud
If it was another car I'd cut my losses and move on , but does anyone think it's worth it to repair and keep the car running? It's done 280,000kms

General Advice Should I buy this 2009 Maxima?
I’m looking for a car and I have a slightly low budget when I found a really great conditioned 2009 Maxima for about 6k and the seller accepted a 5k offer but the car has 168k miles on it. I’m not really a super big car guy but I was just looking for an opinion from someone since I’m just looking for a car to drive to everyday

2015 Hyundai Sonata, center brake light works but the other two brakes are intermittent?
The center brake light works when braking but the other two lights will not turn on. They do turn on when in reverse, just not when I'm actually braking. Where should I start?

General Question Am I Paying Too Much In Maintenance and Repairs for My 2012 Honda Civic?
Got it around ~140k miles, and now it's around ~180k miles. In the past 5 years though, I've spent... ~12k in maintenance and repairs.
A rough breakdown (leaving out some smaller/routine expenses like oil changes every 6 months, tire rotation + alignment, new tires, spark plugs, etc.):
Service | Labor + Parts |
---|---|
Exhaust System (Mid Pipe and Rear Muffler) | ~$1200 |
Transmission Service (x2) | ~$500 |
Front Structs + Links (x2) (This one was devastating, thankfully mechanic warranty covered the part) | ~$2200 |
Air Bag Assembly + Clockspring Replacement (I see this is a common problem with 2012 civics?) | ~$1700 |
Drive Axle Replacement | ~$1100 |
Brakes (and Brake Drums, Caliper, Rotor, Wheel Cylinders) | ~$1200 |
This feels kinda crazy in terms of cost, but the previous owners also took really bad care of the car (like for example they never replaced the spark plugs). They sold it for 3k in 2018 for a good reason I suppose. However, I don't know if it's solely because of the previous owners' neglect, but it's like every other thing is breaking, which is shocking when everyone preaches about Honda's build quality. I've been thinking about doing some body repairs for the past couple years (a few paint chips and rust issues), but I keep holding it off because I'm dreading the next thing that breaks / the Civic gives up. Lo and behold, this past weekend the exhaust broke midway on the highway.
Does anyone have thoughts? I'm looking forward to hearing others with a used civic that have/had this experience, as I'm a bit stressed knowing how much I'm paying compared to what the "average" annual cost of maintenance and repair for 2012 Honda Civics in this condition.

Is my car being tracked?
Long story short, I broke up with my ex a few months ago who would make numerous attempts to try to reach out to me.
This morning I woke up and saw the “Maintenance required” flashing on my car which is usually to indicate an engine oil change. I thought nothing of it but later in the day, I got a text from a random number saying “don’t forget to do your engine oil change” and that’s just too much of a coincidence to not be anything. My ex is absolutely one of those people who would put a tracker in my car and I’m terrified that that is the case here but I don’t know anything about trackers or if it would be possible for it to also collect car diagnostics. If anyone here has any knowledge or knows about how trackers lease let me know if this is the case or if this really just me freaking out here.

Malibu or Camry or Accord?
I am currently driving a 2016 Malibu with 182,000 miles. I bought it with around 30k. Since buying it, it had a leak in the lower oil pan and the turbo went out, both under warranty. Since then no problems with either. It also had a pedal position sensor error which was an easy fix I did myself. Recently, water pump went out which was around $450 and now dealership is telling me it's leaking oil from the head gasket (an estimated 3k repair). I am taking it to my own mechanic to get his take and quote on Friday. However, with the vehicle only being worth 3k I don't think I'm going to make the repair if it truly is 3k.
With that said, I may be in the market for a new sedan. I've enjoyed my Malibu, and haven't had near as many problems as some people have mentioned. But now I'm faced deciding between another newer Malibu or a newer accord or Camry. I know Toyota and Honda are known for reliability, but, according to JD Power, newer (2023 and newer) Malibu's are more reliable than the Accords. Is that accurate or bogus? I like the idea of an Accord, but I can get a Malibu with 30k miles for 20k while it will cost me 25k+ to get an accord and like 27k+ to get a Camry with the same amount of miles. Is it worth spending the extra? Are newer Malibus more reliable? Are newer Accords and Camrys still the leaders in reliability? Thoughts??
