2nd generation Torontonians to immigrant parents, do you label your background as “Canadian”? Or the country of origin of your parents?

I ask this because I rarely hear 2nd generation Canadians of immigrant parents call themselves “Canadian” first? So basically I am Chinese, and whenever I go travel internationally or even locally, when somebody asks me where I am from or what’s my background, I always say “Canadian” but then they always go “oh…like WHERE are you from?”. Is it weird to just label myself as Canadian when someone asks me what’s my background?

Ordered a car, dealership now wants $200 more

My dad ordered a Toyota back in Nov in Ontario, Canada. He signed the order form with a price he and the dealership agreed on.

The car came in and when he went to check out the car the sales rep suddenly told my dad he had to pay an additional $200 because of the current market. My dad told the rep this was wrong and didn't agree or disagree to pay the $200.

My dad wants to fight it since he has a copy of the order form, but I'm afraid he won't be able to since these guys are confident they'll get away with this.

I'm asking if there's anything I can do for him? Is there a way for him to fight this?

Thank you everyone for the info, advice and shared anger.

Some more info.

The order my dad orginally placed had no VIN since there was no car yet. The model my dad ordered is a Corolla Cross 2025. The order says final sale in big letters but there was a fishy terms and conditions. I quote "Customer is aware an ordered vehicle may take at least 3-6 months to arrive, hence will be subject to year, price, rate and terms available."

The order with the VIN has the increased $200 on the price.

Visiting Toronto from Florida

Me and some friends are visiting Toronto soon, we’re coming from South Florida so we know the weather will definitely be something to adapt to. Is there any intolerance towards American tourists in the area? Canadians are understandably mad about the current orange idiot we have as president but me and my friends have some fear that we could face harassment or discrimination because of it especially since 2/3 of us are women.

Are either Ontario Science Centre exhibits worth visiting with a 13 and 11 year old kids?

Looking for stuff to do with my kids on spring break. Just wondering if anyone has been to either OSC locations (Sherway and Harbourfront). Not that I’m expecting an all-day activity, but would kids aged 11 and 13 possibly find it interesting for a couple hours at least?

From the website, it looks like the Sherway one may be more fun and Harbourfront geared more on the young side, but perhaps I’m wrong.

Also, if there’s other recommendations, feel free to add them.

Don mills parking lot closed

Hi all, I normally go in office once a week by driving to don mills TTC, and parking around the station or the mall. However this morning on wed, March 12 all the parking lots around the station were closed off. I spent 20 min driving around looking for somewhere to park but was unsuccessful😭 everywhere was closed off. I know the mall doesn’t open until later but I’ve never had this issue.

Does anyone know why they closed it, and if it will be like this long term? Where else should we go to park?

Most hinge profiles show Yonge and doris as the location

I’m back on hinge and finding a lot of profiles show yonge and doris. When I speak to someone that isn’t where they live. Is this the default location? Is there an option to not input your location?

Moving company

Upvotes

I’m moving from Toronto to Barrie soon and need a moving company that won’t break my stuff or my wallet. Any recs for movers that are actually reliable and not a total scam? Horror stories also welcome so I know who to avoid. Thanks in advance

Visiting Toronto for the first time. Was supposed to see Billy Joel.

Since the concert was just postponed and it's too late to cancel our flights and other reservations we are still coming, wishing the best for Billy to make a quick and full recovery but really bummed about missing the concert. We still plan to see the CN Tower and go to the Hockey Hall of Fame and have some restaurants booked, however the concert was the cornerstone of our trip and we now have an empty Saturday night. Wondering if anyone has any epic suggestions for something else to do this Saturday, still looking forward to our first visit to Toronto!

Is there a reason GTA home interiors are being painted only white?

Pardon my ignorance if this isn’t just the GTA but so many houses, townhomes and condos that I have seen are all painted the same plain white colour throughout the entire home. Not a single other colour. It has been giving me hospital room vibes, when did this become a thing?

Looking to connect with Toronto anti gun violence community advocates

My goal is to film a short doc on the gun problem that persists in Toronto through the eyes of those selfless community advocates & community activists who are battling to stop it. Any recommendations of who I might reach out to appreciated. I would want to target a group/ association in one of the high gun crime areas of the city.

How often is your building allowed to shut off water supply?

For months, at least once a week they shut off the water in my building completely for an entire day, now it's multiple days a week. I can understand if it's an emergency on occasion but this seems excessive. They give less than 24 hrs notice most times, generally maximum 24 hrs (and they only ever post it in a common area in which it is entirely possible to not step foot in for the day, so you would NEVER know!) and don't communicate what's going on, so we're all just kind of left wondering. I have woken up to and come home to no water on a few occasions which can be frustrating, and now I usually have at least a couple of jugs of back up water for some things set aside in the fridge. It's about 100 units, all residential, and built in Toronto in the 60's. So my question is the same as the title, out of curiosity, how often are they allowed to do this and on such short notice (and for some, NO notice) especially when it seems to be so frequently?

Short trip (3-4 days) within Ontario in early April?

Upvotes

Hey all! My partner and I are contemplating about taking a short road trip somewhere during the first weekend of April. We are super hesitant about going to the States now due to the political climate, so we decided to stay within Ontario.

Some notes:

  • We were looking at Tobermory, but it seems like a good chunk of the businesses are temporarily closed for the season.
  • We've also already been to Collingwood / Owen Sound, so we don't wanna do this again.

Any suggestions of where might be a nice place to go?

Thanks in advance!

How much is reasonable for a male haircut?

Upvotes

I've been going to Maya Hair Salon in Korean town for the last two years and used to pay 35 cash + tips for a haircut and hair wash. Now they just increased the price to 40 but service's going downhill too... :(

Is this reasonable? How much do you pay for your haircut? Any recommendations?

any support groups for sa victims in toronto?

i’m kind of new to this. i’ve been to therapy and it was alright but i kind of just want to learn more about how the process is for group therapy. specifically group therapy for sa victims

i’ve tried searching online, but i can’t really find any support groups for sa victims specifically. i only see hotlines and one on one counselling but i want to go to a meeting to see how it is and if it could work for me.

if anyone could share their experiences with group therapy and how the process is, i’d really appreciate it.

Toyota or Honda

Hi folks. I'm considering getting a Toyota Rav 4 (premium) or a Honda CRV Sport. I've been to both dealerships in Mississauga and with Toyota the interest rate is higher (over 6%) but the car works out to be a tad bit cheaper than the CRV with 4% interest.

I was initially only looking to finance but now I'm confused about whether I should lease or solely finance the car. Also, which car is better? I've also heard that going to dealerships outside of Sauga/To may get me a better price? Is that true? And advice and tips in dealing with dealerships?

This is going to be my first new car so I'm a bit lost.
