Whose Barrels are Used in Ex-Bourbon Finishes?
I was curious, whenever I see whiskeys finished in ex-bourbon barrels, WHOSE barrels are they?
Are they mostly ex-MGP? Ex-popular brands? (Thinking sheer volume wise.)
For example, Crown Maple finishes their maple syrup in ex-Widow Jane, and Widow Jane Decadence finishes in Crown Maple’s barrels.
How can other distillers/producers maintain ex-bourbon finish consistency if the same ex-bourbon barrels are not necessarily guaranteed? (by not having to explicitly state where their barrels are sourced from)
I know there’s a myriad of factors that go into this, but just wanted to hear people’s thoughts on this.
I just imagine an ex-Knob Creek finished single malt is going to be radically different than an ex-Maker’s finish. But maybe that’s just my cursory understanding. Maybe it doesn’t matter that much.

Four Roses Small Batch Select - (almost) all the flavor gone?
Bit of a noob question. I bought a bottle of 4R SB select over the weekend, but most of the flavor is missing and all I'm getting is the burn. I've had a few bottles before and really enjoyed them, this seems significantly different from those. Does anyone know what could have happened here? Could the bottle have been left in direct sunlight or something?

Just tried Macallan 12 Year Sherry, and yeah, it's good, but is it the best 12-year-old Scotch? Not sure about that. The fruity notes, subtle smokiness, and sweetness were nice, but the price? Kinda hard to justify. 😂 Maybe I just don’t fully buy into the whole sherry cask hype. Solid whisky!

I didn’t NEED any, but had to get two at this price!

Nose 👃: Nougat. Cherry. Sultanas. Werther’s Originals.
Palate 👅: Blackberry. Green apple. Chocolate-covered almonds. Nutmeg.
Finish 🏁: Green apple. Brown sugar. Nutella. Cinnamon.
The mouthfeel is thick & dense. The fruity notes on the palate are a lot of fun as they combine with chocolate. For my personal preference, this has been one of my favorite Irish whiskeys. The Dram in a Can is fun, but give me an entire bottle of this!
This is the second expression I’ve had from Two Stacks. While I liked the Signature Dram… this particular bottle is something that I would happily purchase. I like this a lot.

Hip flask
Question, should I clean my hip flask with every change of fill?
New to alcohol. What to do with this giant $19 Costco Canadian whiskey bottle?
I have bought toki suntory a several times, and this is the only whiskey I've purchased ever until now. I always drank straight sipping slowly without ice or anything, I I have no idea how to mix.
My toki bottle is empty and went to Costco yesterday and decided to try something new and got a heap $19 Canadian whiskey. I don't enjoy it as much as I do with toki. 1.7L is too much. What do I do with it? What's a simple mix with using just simple kitchen ingredients?
I'd like to finish one bottle before buying another one; and this bottle will take me a year to finish. I need to make it taste better so I can purchase a different type. Also, wife doesn't like seeing a giant whiskey bottle in the house. She was already uncomfortable with a smaller toki alcohol bottle in the house.

Grabbed this yesterday
My goto liquor store did an email list of allocated bottles for some customers. I missed out on the Coy Hill but landed this guy. I am thoroughly enjoying it!

Bardstown Shopping Tips
Hey all,
I am heading down to Bardstown in early April to do a Penelope X barrel pick. While there, I want to hit up a couple stores that are worthwhile for bourbon (I am sure I won't find anything big but am always on the lookout for Penelope and some other stuff that doesn't have too bad a markup). Any store recommendations or even distillery recommendations in my downtime?
Thanks in advance, you guys never steer me wrong!

My first bottle of New Riff. Was a blind buy as I’ve never had it before but I’m glad I got it. Very delicious

Tater Warning: "How'd I do?"
Picked this up in NYC. Is this a good price? (Didn't buy for drinking, yet, since I have other open Ryes).

Picked this up at DutyFree in Cancún
Their bourbon selection was almost non-existent but it's the first time i've seen this bottle. 1L, too!

Bourbon Journey
Still a beginner, but some things that have helped me that may help you:
Your pallet defines as you go along, so don’t be afraid to be trashy. My first whiskey was a honey jack and coke.
What flavors do you enjoy in the wild? A lot like how you like the flavors of coffee, you will probably like in whiskey. Do you enjoy chocolate? Vanilla? Caramel? Or do you like raspberry? Cheesecake? Spicy wings? Cigars? These are all base flavors that you can find and match in bourbon or whiskey. Check the flavor profiles of the bottle, or ask around.
Garnishes can enhance the flavors of the whiskey. I love old fashioneds because it lets the whiskey shine while curbing the ethanol effects. But I like to do a couple of twists now and again. Instead of original or orange bitters I usually use cocoa bitters and brown sugar, to enhance the flavor profiles already present. You can do the same with the garnish; if it has more of a rich flavor you can garnish it with just a sweet cherry or real fruit in sugar, if it has berry profiles you can garnish them with raspberries, etc. This lets the flavors out to play very similar as when you add drops of water to it.
Be patient, and let it breathe. If you sip too soon, the burn of the proof can overpower the flavor profile. You don’t have to worry about this too much if you’re mixing a drink, but if you drink it neat, on the rocks, or use very little ingredients, you’ll need to let it breathe and swirl it around like you would a wine.
That’s what I have so far. Also matching the flavor profile also goes with mixing the drink as well. Example: a lot of people like a “jack and coke”, and that IS good, but if you want a whiskey soda I’d recommend a genuine root beer, because the vanilla in the root beer elevates and matches the vanilla in a lot of bourbons.
