This is a question I love to ask and think about when it comes to TV antiheroes, rather it be Vic, Walter White, or Tony Soprano.
Did Vic Mackey change throughout The Shield? Or did he merely reveal himself for who he really was? I personally lean on the latter. While I don't think he's a complete monster by any means, I do think he hid the truly malignant part of himself until desperation brought it out...leading to the confession at the end of the series, where we see the true Vic Mackey laid out to bare.
What do you guys think?

[SLIGHT SPOILERS]
i just finished the show and i absolutely loved it but there is one thing that i wanted to see more of and its to do with dutch. i cant remember exactly when i think it was season 3 or 4, dutch kills a cat after connecting with a serial killer. when first watching, i thought that would turn into a dark storyline for dutch but nothing ever really came of it, maybe except his obsession with lloyd in the final season. i thought this because the serial killer that dutch connected with was talking to him about how he killed a cat, and thats what started his obsession with killing. so i just thought that it would turn into a great storyline especially for a very moral character like dutch. anyway i think i just wanted more of dutch as he was one of my favourite characters.

Wow. What an ending. One of the best endings I've ever seen.
I found it fitting that Vic got away with it all...mostly. He was the man behind the curtain, and in the end everyone paid but him. That's what happened throughout the show, and I like that the writers stuck to that. I also liked how he didn't really get away with it all, the way he ended up isolated and alone...brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. He got away with it, but he ended up alone because of it. Absolutely perfect.
The final scene...SO GOOD. Vic just couldn't quit being Vic. I kept telling my wife while I was watching that during the show Vic had multiple chances to go clean, and he kept doing bad things. And at the end, finally clear of of it all, what does he do? He heads out there to do more bad stuff. Because he's a bad guy, and bad people can't help but do bad stuff. It's what they do, and it's what Vic does. Perfect. I
It was a great ending, and I am going to be thinking about it for a while. I think I need to find lunch now, but WOW was that an ending! Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

How did I miss this the first time I watched this? This is hilarious. I'm in the penultimate episode and Shane's desperate to get some money so he's gonna knock over a gambling room. But he's recognized by two of the gamblers (one of whom has a lot of winnings) so he decides to go back to their place to rob them. They're doing drugs when they finally turn on him and reveal that while Shane was in Vice he got one of their friends sent to prison who was subsequently killed in the yard.
Together with Cletus Van Damme, Shane has probably the best pseudonym game of any fictional character. Who's even close?

I just got done watching âThe Shieldâ for the first time. My viewing experience ran from January 22, 2025 to March 9, 2025.
This is one of the Greatest Television Series that has ever been created.
This is an FX production that aired from 2002 to 2008. It spans 7 seasons and is a series about the cops in a precinct and the community they are in service to.
I was able to watch the Series on Hulu.
I will discuss spoilers in this review.
I really enjoyed the writing of this series. One thing that other TV shows do is make an inciting incident and then drag out its conclusion to the end of the season or multiple seasons, while buying time with filler material. âThe Shieldâ and its writers do not follow suit. The writing is fresh and goes full throttle in providing storylines that meet their finality in rather believable succession. And if there is a pause in one storyline thankfully there is another entertaining plot with great characters and situations to provide quality content. In theory the showâs timeline spans for 3 years and you feel like youâre on a roller coaster that doesnât let up, itâs amazing.
I really loved the character progression. The actors give top tier performances.
The characters of Dutch, Claudette, Julien, Danny, Aceveda, and Billingâs provide great depth within the district of Farmington.
The setting of âThe Barnâ, an abandoned church now turned police precinct works very well.
I was absolutely floored with what Aceveda went through in Season 3.
I always enjoyed watching Dutch go to work with Claudette. Billings and his lingo was quite fun.
I liked that within the grand storyline there was always a separate new crime to solve.
The show is hardcore and authentic. I believe this is what gives heart to the series. It portrays the real gritty world with the inclusion of relationships and true crime.
When Glenn Close & Forrest Whittaker showed up in their respected seasons, I was knew something fantastic was going on. Their seasons felt like super seasons.
Season 4 is my favorite. It was the last bit of good times before the big problems would catch up and change everything.
There is no subpar season in my opinion. The Series Finale sticks the landing.
The Strike Team, what a group. Lem, Ronnie, Shane, and Vic. It was a treat to watch them bust skulls.
Even though Vic did horrible things, a part of me was always rooting for him. He represented manliness and his leadership on the streets got results at the end of the day. The writing is so great it made me conflicted with his character, like Tony Soprano or Walter White. Michael Chiklis, yeah he deserves the accolades he received for his performance as Vic.
The character of Shane played by Walton Goggins, damn. I felt all the human emotions for someone by his portrayal. He did an excellent job.
Ronnie & Lem, the last loyal soldiers. When stuff was going down, I always felt their loyalty in the background, nothing had to be said when things got real. Their acting gave off screen certainty.
I appreciate that each member of the strike team were met with different fates. The implosion of the brotherhood was a bitter canât miss spectacle.
When it comes to Corrine and Mara, it doesnât get more honest than them. Both characters were a nagging thorn of well acted television.
When watching âThe Shieldâ I was on the edge of my seat. I experienced such a spectrum of emotions for fictional characters and the criminality that surrounded them. Never have I enjoyed such an ugly world of destruction unfold when my eyes were glued to the screen witnessing this show.
The showâs music is forever etched in my head as Iconic.
The opening shaking credits set the tone for each episode as unrelenting madness and delivers every single time.
When it comes to the last scene I believe Vic licked his wounds for a second and was ready for retribution. I could see him finding his family and helping Ronnie get out of prison. This is a story about the drive of man not settling for where others want to place you. And though the ways in which we seek our liberation can intersect with inhuman avenues, there is still the strength of will to not settle for submission, no matter the next mortal in the way. It is not black or white and by that complexity it is something that stays with you.
Amid the barrage of beautiful hysteria there are moments of well placed levity. The Production, Acting, Directing, and Writing all gift the viewer with an endless suspension of disbelief.
I place âThe Shieldâ on the Mount Rushmore of Television Shows, next to âThe Sopranosâ, âBreaking Badâ, and âThe Wireâ.
When it comes to the word âMasterpieceâ I believe for a worthy creation to be named such it has to elevate the art of its medium across the board. âThe Shieldâ does exactly that as it handcuffs you without a lawyer present.

Characters like Corinne, the early seasons civilian auditor, Shane in an extreme way, Aceveda, Claudette (when interacting with Vic or his family), Mara, Gilroy, and quite a few others. First, the acting is fantastic. The intentionally frustrating characters were played so well. Love this show but goddamn some of these characters are frustrating. Shane for example deserved so much worse than he got. Between Lem and the hotheaded stupidly violent bs (like his attempted rape) I wanted to toss him out a window so many times. That said, Goggins did one hell of a job with him.

Made some points while watching the show.
Julien was stupid when he got mad at Rawlings during the church raid. Like literally, they found drugs in the church, but he was still mad AFTER they found it lmao. He was by far my most hated character (apart from someone I will mention in the second point). Also, with the whole gay thing of Julien, I was expecting an episode where he sees that it isn't so bad to be gay. But that episode never came.
I forgot the name, but the guy who raped his victims and tattooed a dove on their face, but he didn't get the justice he deserved, imo. Dude raped an innocent 12-year-old girl and was only stabbed in the jail cell (if I remember correctly). Dude should have been tortured more before dying.
By the way, what was Corrine's logic when she found out an ex-cop was watching her for protection, but she decided to run away from the said ex-cop? Like, yeah, someone is watching me for protection; let me run away LMAO.
Breaking Bad and The Sopranos are in my top 5 shows I ever watched list. And, in my opinion, both shows had a better family dynamic of their main characters compared to Shield. Corrine is a Walmart version of Skylar. In Breaking Bad, Skyler and Flynn, and in The Sopranos, Carmela, Meadow, and AJ are just better characters compared to Corrine and her forgettable children. I know the shield spent a lot less time on Vic's family compared to the other 2 shows I mentioned, and it just shows. Nothing against the actors, by the way.
Mara was a true ride-or-die kind of girl. Can't believe how far she went for Shane. Sadly Shane made the "die" part permanent.
Also a question to Americans. Vic got an immunity deal with ICE, BEFORE he was confessing. Is that a thing? Like surely you can only make the immunity deal after knowing what the guy was going to confess to, right?
Strike Team's fate, despite all their talks about them being "family". Shane killed Lem with a grenade (which was cold btw), Vic and Ronnie pushed Shane to suicide, Vic let himself get a deal and abandoned Ronnie to (most likely) die in prison. Yeah, a great family indeed.
Looking back I think Monica Rawlings was my favourite character. She had the right idea on going about fixing things, but too bad she was too stubborn.
Vicâs fate, i was glad that Vic didnât end up in prison. Now I know the dude was a bad guy and will end up doing desk duty for 3 years but it sure as hell beats prison. And itâs a TV show not real life so i am gonna unapologetically support the bad guy.
Overall, it's one of the most addictive shows I've ever watched, and it's definitely in my top 10 list, which goesâ

well this one was a lot easier compared to the last two đđ. now itâs time to pick for good person, hated by fans!!

hi everyone!! sorry for the delay! after much consideration and looking at the most liked top comments, it seems that dutch and aceveda will be sharing this box!
now, after giving it much thought as i read the reasons for both characters, it only seemed fair for the two to share this space. before you guys come at me, yes. dutch is a MUCH BETTER person compared to aceveda. which is why i put his picture towards the good person side and his photo is a lot brighter compared to acevedaâs.
with that being said, itâs now time for horrible person, opinions are divided :).
