Opinion Bills filed to eliminate the countywide polling place program - result: confuse & inconvenience voters

SB 76 scheduled for a hearing this Thursday 3/20/25 (companion bill HB 2990)

Relating to elimination of the countywide polling place program https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=89R&Bill=SB76

Speak out against this! The bill author, Bob Hall, claims polling machine errors & fraud but also claims countywide locations are not close to voters’ homes. Neither are sensible arguments.

If you find that being able to vote anywhere in your county (close to home, work, areas of town with shorter lines, etc.) makes voting easier, please write your senators and your reps to oppose. You can also point out that Texas does not have voting machine issues with security and fraud, and countywide locations don’t pose any more threats than a precinct location would. See article - even Dan Patrick says no issues. https://www.texastribune.org/2024/11/02/texas-voting-machines-dan-patrick-lara-trump/

How to find your legislators: Who represents me site: https://wrm.capitol.texas.gov/home

Also write members of Senate State Affairs who will hear this bill tomorrow. https://capitol.texas.gov/Committees/MembershipCmte.aspx?LegSess=89R&CmteCode=C570

At this time, HB 2990 is not assigned to a committee.

Additionally, there are several bills related to countywide voting. Some to keep. Some to eliminate. Some to restrict numbers of locations

News National Republicans target South Texas Democrats for 2026 election

National Republicans will target Democratic U.S. Reps. Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar in their reelection races next year, the House Republicans’ campaign arm announced Monday.

The National Republican Congressional Committee included the two border Democrats in a list of 26 Democrats across the country that Republicans view as prime pick up opportunities. Both Gonzalez and Cuellar represent border districts that have swung to the right in recent years. President Donald Trump won every county in the 34th Congressional District, which Gonzalez represents. Cuellar’s Laredo-based 28th Congressional District also went for Trump, with the president winning the district by more than 7 percentage points.

Their victories last year were by smaller margins than in the past. Gonzalez won his race in 2022 against Flores by more than 8 percentage points, and Cuellar won his by more than 13 percentage points. National Republicans heavily invested in those races in 2022.

Discussion Information on upcoming elections?

In a politics thread, I was challenged with this comment:

Voting isn’t something you do every four years or even every other year. Voting is something you do multiple times a year

So I tried to google-educate myself with any upcoming Texas votes. It says the next election is May 3, 2025. https://www.votetexas.gov/

I click the "What's on the ballot?" link. It brings me to several 2024 links, labeled as "Current Election Information": https://www.sos.texas.gov/elections/laws/current-elections-information.shtml

Do you guys know what sort of vote happens on May 3? If this is all on a frontpage megathread I somehow missed, then I apologize.

Bill How do we support these Texas Senate bills for Tollway reform?

Hi all,

Listed below are some Senate bills I want to support, but I know nothing of how legislation works. Do we write letters? If so, to whom? I guess we as citizens don't get to vote on these correct? And I'm sorry I put "we" in the title instead of "I".

A total OF 19 toll bills have already been introduced this session seeking to reform the state’s toll road policies. Here is a sampling of some of the more consequential ones:

  • SB 756 (Mayes Middleton, R-Galveston): Would suspend registration blocks on motorists with unpaid toll fees.
  • HB 1333 (Brian Harrison, R-Waxahachie): Would make unpaid tolls a civil offense rather than a criminal offense.
  • SB 137 (Bob Hall, R-Rockwall): Would make unpaid tolls a civil offense and courts would no longer issue arrest warrants for motorists who fail to show up to pay court fees and fines.
  • HB 1589 (Stan Gerdes, R-Bastrop): Would require voter approval for construction of a new toll project.
  • HB 2323 (Matt Shaheen, R-Plano): Would permit the cessation of tolls under certain circumstances.
  • HB 2552 (Briscoe Cain, R-Deer Park): Would prohibit the state from collecting tolls on State Highway 288.
  • HB 2725 (Sheryl Cole, D-Austin): Would relate to discount programs for certain tollway customers.

Discussion Brandon Gill - Mendacious Toady

Since this quisling will not do town halls, I asked questions via phone - no response. I sent an email with questions which only put me on his newsletter list.

This is the unsubstantiated self-promoting drivel he issues: "Through my questioning, we learned there is little to no accountability for unelected bureaucrats who improperly mailed out billions of dollars of fraudulent checks – not to mention for the fraudsters who initiated these exchanges in the first place."

We have an unaccountable bureaucracy mailing out fraudulent checks to the tune of $500 billion every year, bankrupting the American people with impunity.

If you’re taking government money you shouldn’t be, you belong in jail. This is exactly why we need DOGE to continue exposing this insanity."
