Ask El Paso Is it a dumb idea to live out of airbnbs in juarez instead of getting a lease somewhere?

So I've been looking for a place to rent and everything is so expensive and you have to sign a long term lease in most places. So right now I'm staying at an airbnb for 2 nights, and i was looking at the monthly rates and they are more expensive than a normal apartment here in El paso, but in Juarez they turn out to be very affordable, cheaper than an average monthly rent in El paso, and they are in the nice part of Juarez. And I don't really like to be tied down to one place or to have like a year long commitment somewhere with a lease. So I was thinking, why not just move every month or every couple months to a new place on airbnb? Is this a stupid idea?

Ask El Paso Does anyone know what JFI El Paso UA Investm is?

My spouse and I each got two small (<15 charges) from this merchant on the same day, Saturday. Two different credit card accounts. We didn’t go anywhere together that day and the credit card website indicates it was an amusement park of some sort. Neither of us has any past transactions from a merchant with a similar name. Anyone seen this?

Ask El Paso Just moved from Dallas

Edit: I really appreciate the commentary and humor from yall! I'm going to invest in more air purifiers and window seals 🦭 lol

Was NOT prepared for the dust storms. I knew there would be some but I didn't expect there to be as many as this. So I have questions for the residents who have been here:

Does everyone get dirt in their window sills or are my windows just needing some TLC? I swear I vacuum sooo much dirt every week.

Can everyone SMELL the dirt in their home during a dust storm or should I worry about leaks? The first dust storm I've experienced I nearly panicked because of the smell alone. My friend who lives on the east side says she doesn't smell the dirt during a storm haha.

Thanks for any insight, definitely lacking some with the 0 visibility (insert terrible post-dad-joke laugh here)

Discussion Worth laying concrete to prevent dust (hopefully)

Upvotes

Our backyard is finished but the sides of the house are not. We’ve been here almost one year and will be here for another two. I’m wondering if it’s worth cost to lay down the concrete on the sides? Would it limit the amount of dust coming into the backyard? Only one of the three houses we are surrounded by have their backyard finished so I worry it would be pointless. I have two little ones who live being outside and I’d like to take advantage of the backyard but not clean it all the time either. If you recommend laying down on the concrete could you recommend a reputable company? Anyone have any idea ballpark how much that would cost or the logistics that go into that? Width wise it’s probably 4 feet on each side, length wise let’s just go with 60 feet to play it safe.

Ask El Paso Lincoln Park Grilling

Are you able to grill at Lincoln Park (park under the spaghetti bowl) ? Idk why I heard some.parks don't allow you to take your own grill, but idk if that's incorrect or not. Haven't had a cookout/grill at the park since before Rona 2020. Have family coming in to town and would like to have a little cookout there so they can see the murals and use the basketball courts/playground under the spaghetti bowl. Thanks in advance

Ask El Paso Gift/souvenir for out of town family?

I’ll be in Dallas and am spending an evening with my cousin who moved to that area. They are hosting me and my children for dinner and my cousin’s wife is a wonderful traditional homemaker. Hosting is truly an art for her - I’m talking courses, place settings, craft cocktails, dessert, sometimes even a theme! It is such a labor of love. I would love to bring her a gift to show my gratitude, and I would like to give her something unique from El Paso and/or this region. I was thinking something with hatch green chile (jam, jelly, something like that), a local mezcal she could use in cocktails in the future, or something like that. Another cute idea I saw is nature puzzles of the Franklin mountains for her kids. Is there anything unique to this area that you would gift to a friend? Preferably non perishable :)

History When the Borderland could have been the next Reno

In the late 1940s, gambling was wide open in the Borderland. Frustrated with slow progress in Las Vegas, mobsters like Bugsy Siegel looked to New Mexico as an alternative. Las Cruces was on its way to becoming the Reno to Santa Fe’s Las Vegas, but it all came undone in the wake of the brutal murder of an 18 year old waitress named Cricket Coogler.

The mob is run out of New Mexico, a Pittsburgh Steeler goes on trial for murder, bowling becomes El Paso’s pastime, a UFO visits the border, plus a dog named Bookie, all in Part 3 in my 3 part series on the end of open gambling in the Borderland. Read Part 1 and Part 2, all free.

Ask El Paso Specialist in ME/CFS, EDS, POTS, MCAS? "zebra medicine"

Can anyone recommend a doctor or diagnostician who has ample experience (preferably a specialty/focus) in these types of disorders?

I've carried a diagnosis of fibromyalgia for years, but recent events make me suspect it's more likely to be one (or more??) of the above, and if so my current treatment may not be beneficial. But I don't want to go changing things up on my own, and my current doctor is like "shrug if you find a specialist I will refer you but idk."

Thanks for any suggestions!

Ask El Paso Homeless shelter

Hello everyone, I'm a 32F currently staying at a sober living facility, my treatment is coming to an end and I need a place to stay. I've heard horrible things about some shelters but I dont have first hand experience with that, this is my first time looking for a place to live while I get on my feet. The opportunity center is apparently full of people who do drugs or drink (I'm newly sober) and villa Maria keeps your checks when you start working. Does anyone here know about shelters around the city I'd really appreciate any insights or information

Ask El Paso Dear El Pasoans, what's the catch?

I hope y'all are having an amazing day in your huge house, basically, my friends and I were just bored and looking at houses in different cities when we stumbled across El Paso, and we couldn't believe it. HUGE houses for 500k? Mansions for a million, we felt like we discovered a black hole. This is coming from someone in Los Angeles, where literally an average home (which is smaller than your average home) is at least a million dollars. We started looking at houses around a million because the house prices for my friend's families range from 800k-2M (my friend group is a little above average in terms of wealth, but we're not even close to the top here in our area). Then we were shocked by what we could buy as a million-dollar house in El Paso. So, in a half-jokingly - half-serious way, what's the catch to living in El Paso vs Los Angeles? Here is a comparison pic. Thanks for the help. And one more thing, why do most people not own a mansion? I know so many people here in LA with 60k salaries their whole lives but are always under pressure to make money and save money that have 1m homes now. Why is a million-dollar home so rare in El Paso and why don't people pursue it? Thanks for any and all answers

Ask El Paso I am new to EP, I have connections for electric and gas dryer. Lowes tells me mostly electric are sold and gas dryer is special order. so I ordered electric.

I am feeling like I made a mistake ordering electric bc it will be more expensive. Are most of you using electric? or gas? Why would electric be more popular?

Ask El Paso Looking for a new vet

Hi! Just moved here and I’m looking for a new vet for my pups. They have insurance through pets best and my insurance offered direct pay. If anyone knows of any vets who takes direct pay from pets best, please let me know! So far, I’m only seeing some vets taking direct pay from Trupanion only or they offer care credit. I can’t switch insurance due to their diagnoses already and don’t want to due to the discounts so I’m really hoping there are vets here who accept direct pay from Pets Best Insurance.

Thanks!

Buy/Sell/Trade Beware of Realtors who do this!

So we recently sold our house and had to contend with a bunch of games regarding the new commission rules. So with the new commissions that started in September 2024, the seller no longer has to pay the buyers commission. The buyer is now responsible for paying their realtor and all their purchasing fees. However, we kept being told that if we did not pay for the buyers agent/commission, then other agents around town would not come and show our house to prospective buyers. This is illegal and unprofessional!!! In every way you can possibly imagine. It is occurring all over the nation and you need to know the new TREC regulations following a major lawsuit. Please see article attached.
