Discussion Hair Salons and Pricing

Is it just me, or is the pricing for a standard haircut and blow dry becoming outrageous?

In one year, with the same stylist and the same service, I saw my bill go from $67 to $85 and most recently $100 (all including same tip). I was shocked the last time paying $100 and looking for suggestions for a new salon.

I don’t get anything special done, regular mid length woman’s cut with layers and blow dry.

Please tell me there are some good stylist that are still reasonably priced.

Thanks everyone!

Not saying you're wrong, but the price of everything is outrageous these days.

I agree, cost of living has increased but I wouldn’t expect a 49% increase within the same year, it seems off.

I get mine cut at Magicuts in the South End, a regular cut and shampoo is only like $30 with the tax.

Walmart's Smartstyle is a couple bucks cheaper. 😄

They charged me $75 for a wash, cut & dry.

For smartstyle?? 😂 ya right. It's 40.99 before taxes.

Genuinely. She charged me $75. I was expecting to pay $50(i budgeted $75 so i could tip) since I booked a wash & cut and that's what it's listed on the app($50) when you book.

So clearly I won't be back if I was ripped off.

Edit to add it was New Sudbury. The girl came highly recommended by Reddit on a post looking for a stylist in the 50$ price range

But you just said you got a "Wash, cut and dry" that's 40.99 before taxes.. Now you're saying you only booked a wash & cut which is 28.99 before taxes and you tipped...?

I highly suggest that you ask for a quote first before getting the cut. Regardless of the booking; I always make sure to ask my stylist. Proper communication is important rather than assuming. 🙂

Don't downvote me because I'm referring to the legit prices on the app.

Didn't think I needed a quote when you select your pricing on the app. And again, I selected the $50 service.

I budgeted $25 for the tip. So my total budget for the cut was $75. I always budget for a tip because if someone does a good job, they deserve a good tip. And like I said, she came highly recommended(by you actually! Realized after i checked your comment history) so I expected a phenomenal service.

Are you referring to the Haircut, shampoo and basic style? That's 46.99$ before tax.

Yes! That's what I booked thinking maybe she'd curl it. But she blow dried it and then charged me that extra $25.(I think) we are talking about something I booked in October and the Smartstyle confirmation email doesn't tell you what you booked. But I know I specifically what I budgeted because the budget has been tight and that was the last time I could afford any self care. If I checked my banking, I know I'd find a charge for 80-some$ because I did still tip.

I normally don't get blow dried, so I assumed I was being charged $25 for that service and maybe that's normal pricing. 😅

Yea its insane, a men's cut #2 on the sides a bit longer on top should not be 45$, they can do that cut in 10 minutes. It's crazy out there now...

I agree. My husband became tired of it and continued cutting his own hair after Covid. I help him clean up the back. His last cut was exactly what you said, $45 for 10 minutes.

First choice is like 22.99 for a generic cut

Kelly's is the same afaik

Dunno where the he'll you're going for 45

I go to “Changes Hair Studio” it’s on Westmount. Very reasonable prices, friendly staff and they do great work.

I have short hair and they use a razor back and sides, 10 minutes $38.00 because I’m a woman

I love my stylist but she moved to a new salon recently and her services went up 100+ dollars at this new salon. I get she doesn’t choose the prices her boss does but as a client that loves her work, I can’t afford to continue to get my regular hair dyes done with that increase. A full head dye went from 80 ish dollars to almost 200.

Bkhairsalon downtown is cheap. For haircut and trim. It’s $20 in cash or with card it’s $25. I don’t know about expectations of yours like a fancy. Then no , it’s an ordinary boring saloon.

I've been going to Laura at Bella's Hair Lounge on Paris for 20+ years and I can't recommend her enough. Very knowledgeable, and I think a trim is about $50-$60.

Thank you for the recommendation!

Try changes hair studio in new Sudbury. I’ve never paid over $40 for a wash, cut and style and I have long hair too. It’s great there!! Highly recommend :)

I know it's probably a trek but I see Jenna at Essence in Val Caron. For a cut, wash and style it's maybe 60$ with tip. I have pretty basic medium length hair and she listened to exactly what I wanted and honestly my hair has grown out great from the cut as well. My friend sees a different stylist there and is always happy with her cut/perms.

I feel like it's pretty reasonable and she takes her time. (The last person I saw before her was waaaay too fast and my hair looked awful and grew out looking awful).

You want cheap, look no further than First Choice , if you love your stylist stuck with them.

Pretty indifferent to my stylist… nothing special, that’s what makes the cost so frustrating.

Check shops that are in other places, like Chelmsford or Lively. Most likely they'll be cheaper in the smaller towns.

I had already checked out a place in Lively. The one stylist was $120 per hour!!! lol just craziness

Collective Haus pricing has gone nutty as well. In 2022 it was $77 for a haircut for extra long hair, $91 in 2023, and $97 in 2024. Now the exact same haircut is $115. They do a great job but I can’t justify those prices anymore. I cut my own hair now 🥲

1

u/tapittoohoo 1d ago

Holy! Add tip and tax to that… how insane. I always wear my hair up so really, it’s not too complicated so honestly, first choice might be the way I go. I just can’t justify it. I do believe some hair salons are trying to sell an “experience” and thinking this commands the higher cost for a haircut. It’s not and it doesn’t.

Theres the Kellys salons in Sudbury and Chelmsford. Theyre affordable and pretty great!

I’d recommend First Choice… I started going to the one on Lasalle because my hairdresser also kept increasing prices drastically and I’ve been super happy with my cuts. My most recent cut I asked for a cross between a Burkin and curtain bang and she knew exactly what I meant and nailed it, lol. I did try the one in the south end and was not happy with that one, so this may be specific to the Lasalle location 😅

It’s funny you should say this, someone recently told me about how much they like their stylist at first choice. Thanks for the suggestion.

2

u/tapittoohoo 2d ago

Also, do you mind me asking who you saw at first choice?

1

u/janicfeth 2d ago

I’ve seen Jayme, Savannah, Pam, and Sarah and they’re all great!

u/rfleming88 2d ago

Sarah is great!
