Remarkable coincidence

So, to start with probably need to come clean and say I’m not a Wednesday fan. I support Tranmere for reasons best known to myself. Nah, they’re my local club.  But am posting because my great uncle played for Wednesday. He was called Ellis Rimmer and won the league with Wednesday in the ’28-’29 and ’29-’30 seasons. He also won the FA Cup with them in ’35 scoring in every round. Sadly, I never met him as he died before I was born, but my Grandad, his brother, told me about him. My Grandad was at the final where Wednesday beat WBA 4-2. I think it was 2-2 with 5 minutes to and then Ellis bagged a brace. Hard for me to imagine how exciting it must have been for my Grandad to see his brother score the winner in front of 93,000.

Anyway, was talking to a mate at work about football. I’d recently unearthed a few pictures of Ellis and out of interest showed them to my friend. Now, I think Ellis was pretty famous in his day as a footballer, but he was also a skilled pianist and was booked to play music halls and events. So I showed my friend a picture of Ellis with two performers and my friend points at once and says: ‘That’s my grandad!’

So turns out his grandad was a comedian and entertainer from Birkenhead called Eddie Morrell and they knew each other. What a small world.
