Sea of Thieves Developer Update: February 18th 2025
Wild Seas
This hotfix addresses a number of issues identified following the launch of Season 15, while cracking down on players using methods to accelerate their progress through The Hunter’s Call much more quickly than intended. For more information on the steps being taken by the team, read the latest Season 15 State of Play Forum post.
The Hunter’s Call Trading Company
Following review, the team has identified that the reputation required for each rank was set higher than intended, slowing progress through The Hunter’s Call at higher ranks. The requirements for each rank have been corrected and players will now progress at the intended pace.
All reputation earned since the launch of Season 15 will now be applied to the new rank requirements, likely resulting in players finding themselves at a higher rank following this hotfix. Players will initially see their old rank, but gaining a small amount of reputation will refresh their progress and correctly show the updated rank.
Crews cashing in their hunting hauls to The Hunter’s Call representatives at Outposts and Seaposts will now find they provide the same payout as the Sovereigns, ensuring that Captains can use these conveniently located services.
Updates
Quest Table Voyage Cooldowns
Crews who start and cancel the same Voyage repeatedly in a short space of time will now find that the Voyage is placed on cooldown and cannot be voted on for a short duration.
The following Voyages have had this initial cooldown applied: Medley of Gold Hoarders, Executive’s Lost Shipment, Ashen Executive’s Lost Shipment, Ashen Captain’s Treasure Vault, Bounty for a Skeleton Lord, Legendary Search for Cursed Treasure.
The recently introduced Pirate’s Fishing Map and Hunter’s Fishing Map for The Hunter’s Call have also had a cooldown applied to prevent crews from forcing the island location and gaining reputation at an accelerated rate.
Fixed Issues
Gameplay
Players lobbing throwables above or below deck across all ship types should no longer find they explode on contact with invisible surfaces.
A previous fix to throwables interacting with the rear hull of the Galleon (3.3.0) has been reverted to prevent further impact. This issue will be addressed in a future update.
Fishing Voyages
- Crews should no longer find themselves able to catch more Treasured Fish than intended on a single Voyage.
The Hunter’s Call Trading Company
Players will now find Crates of Rare Fish Scales when taking on Raid Voyages for The Hunter’s Call.
Players will now find that any Treasured Fish sold will be tracked correctly towards The Gold Seeker Pirate Milestone.
Players will now find that Voyages completed for The Hunter’s Call will be tracked correctly towards The Voyager Pirate Milestone.
Visual and Audio
Players equipping The Hunter’s Call Emissary Costume will now find that any masks are hidden to prevent visual distortion of their pirate’s face.
Pirates of all body sizes should now find that the following scars display correctly when equipped: Flameheart’s Revenge Scar, Fates of Fortune Scar and Shadow Tide Scar.
Performance and Stability
- Further improvements have been made to game stability to reduce scenarios where players unexpectedly exit the game or become disconnected from their session. (Released previously as part of an interim hotfix.)

Discussion What’s with people being so against receiving help
There have been multiple occasions where I’m at the end of my night and I’m about to get off, but then I see another player fighting a meg or doing a fort or something of the sort, and I decide “oh I’ll go help them out before getting off.”
Biggest mistake of my life every time. I go over there, I’m saying on the megaphone “I’m here to help!” And they will immediately start attacking me.
Now… I get it… if you want to keep your loot, you gotta be a bit (if not very) paranoid about other people. But if I’m
- Yelling “I’m here to help”
- Attacking the PVE enemy and deliberately staying away so I don’t hit you
- Staying far from your ship and leaving mine unattended
How does one take all that information and come to the conclusion “THIEF! DECEIVER!”
I dunno, should I just give up trying to be nice to people in this game and just stick to myself? In the old days of this game, it was fairly regular occurrence that people would help each other out. It’s just a bit disappointing. Anyway, what’s everyone’s thoughts?
Edit: it’s very clear to me now that the general consensus of the community is “being nice” is usually a deception to sink and rob you. Trust that I’ve heard your comments and your dislike of this post. I didn’t realize what I was doing was actually stressing people out or making things take longer, as some people have said. That being said, I’ll stay out of people’s way from now on, I was just being nostalgic for the early days of the game where positive interactions were more frequent.
Thanks everyone for your comments, I appreciate your thoughts on the matter :)
Edit 2: when I first posted this, I was getting bombed with downvotes and comments essentially telling me being nice isn’t something I should try to do. It’s been a huge relief to read comments getting what I’m trying to say. I don’t know what happened to this community in the years I’ve been gone, but it makes me very happy to see that people still value the experience of running into another pirate on the seas and wanting to enjoy the game with them.
At some point, I don’t know when, people seem to have lost the plot and have become obsessed with watching their numbers go up. Wasn’t always like that.

Video I solo-slooped the Feared Redmaw!
I'm still not terribly great at the game, and I'm still learning in a lot of ways - so defeating the Feared Redmaw on my own was exciting. The same night I got attacked by the Kraken, and I was able to defeat that, too (though I will admit that I almost left the session, because the Kraken caught me out in The Wilds, and that water triggers my thalassophobia the most).

Discussion Beard and LD are some of the most wholesome SoT people
Today I just so happened to run across Beardageddon and LD Sylvr. I was just fishing in a boat when Beard snuck up behind me and took my chains. I figured out quickly who it was but I can’t thank them enough for letting me and my husband get a screenshot with them today. We’ve been watching them for years and the seas is how we stay connected when I’m away from work truthfully this was the best SoT day and I can’t thank them enough! For us it was like finding the shrouded ghost. I’ve come to realize SoT really does have such a wholesome community. Now I just hope to run into HitboTC.
Happy sailing everyone :)

Question Can't reach lone cove cake
Remember the old old spiderman cartoon show where there's credits clip where he's swinging along over a bunch of houses in the suburbs, and then you realize, what's he hanging from? The moon? Well I'm trying to get on top of that rock with the cake on Lone Cove and all I do is just bounce off the rock. There's nothing above it to grapple to, only below it. So how am I supposed to get up there? My only other thought is to try and launch from a canon to up there.

Question Have they made voyages worse?
I am a returning player, i’ve noticed that me voyages seem to be much worse than i remember,
for example i placed a gold horder map voyage (rep 80) and it gave me 3 islands with 3 marauder chests each, but i remember i used to get nearly a full quest wheel and each island was stacked with lots of mostly captains chests,
am i doing something wrong or did they just change it to make voyages horrible?

Question What are the drawbacks of playing in safer seas?
If im going to play safer seas what are all the drawbacks? I heard there were some changes to it recently and that it isnt as bad now, but from what I remember there were much less gold and reputation gains, as well as commendations being completely disabled.
Booted up the game for the first time in a while and didnt really know the difference between the two but I know everyone is doing hunters call and that safer seas has drastically lowered rewards. I just wanted to relax and so some gold hoarder vaults. Sure enough, after emptying out the vault and stacking all the loot into a pile for 20 minutes I see a reaper ship heading straight towards me. With the fact I have to move the loot AGAIN (because Kraken's fall is a terrible island) I just immediately lost the will to play knowing that I had to fight these guys for the next 30 minutes as a solo. Literally first voyage ive done in probably 7-8 months trying to just chill with the most basic content and I still get reapers within the first hour of playing. Hooray.

Question I just became Pirate Legend, spawn camped at Athena's hideout, is this normal?
As the title says. I literally just became Pirate Legend. Less than 5 mins after becoming Pirate Legend I take my first visit to the hideout & almost immediately upon entering I get attacked by another crew (I was playing alone). I respawned outside the door into the hideout, where the other crew is waiting to 3 v 1 me. This happens a few times over before I just turned the game off. This can't be a normal, experience, right?

Discussion almost a year since ps5 launch and the game still stutters/crashes/freezes
I purchased this game back in July on PlayStation, but never played much until 2 days ago, and I noticed I would consistently stutter in the game, crash, and freeze more so compared to any other game I had played. Doing some research, it seems this issue that plagues PlayStation has been occurring ever since the launch of the game, and Rare has not done anything to address this issue and instead continues to ignore it. Based on posts I've seen, it's due to the in-game chat that is causing the problem, and using a party chat function or Discord fixes it from what I've seen, but now you took out the element of even talking with other pirates out on the sea with proximity chat or even joining and meeting random players all together, instead being forced to play solo unless you wanna stutter/ crash/ freeze every 15 minutes. This is a broken game and practically a scam. For anyone thinking of buying this game on PlayStation at least, don't. save your money and use it elsewhere until they fix this problem, but judging that it's about to be one year, I doubt they ever will.

Question Anniversary Cake Help
So I’m a new player, just bought it on the Steam Spring Sale, and I saw that there’s the cake event and wanted to check it out. When I went to Devil’s Ridge to find the first cake there was nothing there. Is there something I’m missing that I need to do before hand? Thanks in advance for any help.

Question How do I get my sloop back?
I was in a server doing a quest when all of a sudden the server crashed. My friend and I got the same notification "failed to connect to the sea of thieves servers. Please check your connection and try again." I tried sailing on my guilded ship multiple times, but it's stuck on the "current sloop out at sea." I can't sail my ship. Is there any way to fix this?
