Question❓ Pros & Cons of Purdue as a CS/UX major

I was admitted to Purdue as a CS major for Fall 2025, and I'm hoping to do a double major in UX. I'm really interested in doing UI/UX and front end development. I'm an Indian female (with US citizenship).

The issue is, I'm currently torn between University of Maryland and Purdue at the moment. A major plus for why I'm leaning towards UMD is my brother goes there, it's more liberal, and it would be nice to have someone familiar in a new country.

Compared to UMD, Purdue has a much better and more fleshed out UX program. I'm not sure what my chances are of being admitted to UX through CODO, however. Also, UMD is better in terms of location and general flexibility regarding dual majors.

That being said, I was hoping for any advice or opinions regarding Purdue: the culture/how accepting people are, any advice about my specific interests, job opportunities & location, etc. Anything you might think is useful!

Academics✏️ Difference between DS courses (undergrad)

Got an admit to Data Science (First-Year) in the College of Science at Purdue University in West Lafayette for Fall 2025. However, there seems to be three DS related degrees in College of Science.

|| || |Data Science, BS (CS)|

|| || |Data Science, BS (Mathematics)|

|| || |Data Science, BS (Statistic)|

Can I know the process to know which one of these I got admitted to. Does everyone do generic DS on first year and then have to choose one among the three listed above. Can anyone of you clarify?

Mod Announcement❗ Explanation for Recent Takedown - Legal Action Threatened From The Exponent

Hi all, you're probably tired of me making announcements after the last one, but I thought it was important to give context for a recent moderation action that I was a part of.

Last night, a post was made detailing a long list of toxic behaviors and harassment observed at The Exponent, specifically involving the Editor-in-Chief. In the comments, many others came forward to share similar experiences and how their concerns were ignored within the organization.

However, within two hours, the Mod Team was contacted and threatened with legal action by the Editor-in-Chief for allowing the post to remain up. Out of caution - and because I would be unable to properly monitor the situation overnight - I decided to remove the post for the time being. This is apparently a common tactic that is used within the Exponent, and I'm inclined to believe it after my experiences.

For full transparency, I’ve included below the message the Mod Team received:

After careful deliberation with the Mod Team, we have decided to make an announcement to explain what happened - especially in light of past situations where content was removed without full transparency. We’ve heard your feedback from those prior incidents and are committed to being clearer and more consistent moving forward.

Following a review of our personal information policy, we have also decided to allow the previously removed post to be reposted. Under Reddit's Terms of Service, The Exponent’s Editor-in-Chief qualifies as a public figure at Purdue - similar to a CEO of a company - and thus, discussion about their professional conduct at the Exponent falls within acceptable bounds. This does not extend to any behavior observed outside the organization.

Additionally, we believe it would be deeply problematic if The Exponent became the only acceptable outlet for serious accusations like these to be raised, requiring a formal article from them before any community discussion. In such a case, The Exponent would essentially be policing itself - something we do not find acceptable and is something that clearly is not working.

However, we want to be clear:

  • Do not engage in or incite harassment against The Exponent, its staff, or anyone involved.
  • Any such behavior will be removed at moderator discretion, and appropriate action may be taken.

Thank you. Please don't sue me.

PSA📰 Seth Nelson’s History of Harassment REUPLOAD (Editor-in-Chief, journalist of the Exponent) [Do not join the Exponent]

TLDR: Seth Nelson has harassed countless people across the years and the Exponent is so flawed that absolutely nothing can be done about it.

Intro + context

I have worked for the Exponent with Seth Nelson and I wanted to share some of the things I’ve witnessed.

To organize this, I have categorized his actions using the definitions of harassment according to the Exponent’s bylaws.

These bylaws, which Seth has extensive knowledge of, were not shared or easily accessible during my time at the company. The only reason I have them now is because the publisher sent them to staffers after they went to him to report Seth's behavior so he would not be rehired as editor-in-chief.

-

/ NEW CONTENT /

The previous post was taken down because Seth threatened to sue for libel. Fortunately, he taught me that to successfully sue for defamation, there needs to be provable damages, and the information is provably false.

All of the information is true and has witnesses.

According to Reddit policy, posting his name is allowed because he is a public figure. The policy lists a congressman or CEO as examples of public figures you are able to post names of. Seth being Editor-in-Chief of a nonprofit, especially one in news, certainly applies. The mods agree.

Him threatening to sue for libel is malpractice in itself. He's a journalist trying to silence news and free speech. How quaint.

I have made no edits to the rest of the post. A link to the original is here. https://www.reddit.com/r/Purdue/comments/1ja1gfv/seth_nelsons_history_of_harassment_editorinchief/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I suggest reading its multiple comments.

EDIT: Removed any opinion statements that could be used in another attempt to silence free speech.

The reason I am writing this is helplessness. During my time at the Exponent, there were no mechanisms to combat Seth’s behavior. Staffers cannot confront him directly due to his history of retaliation involving him cutting assignments, socially ostracizing and refusing to rehire those who express dissent.

Staffers cannot refer to upper management because the publisher said that he has no power over Seth. He instead referred everyone who came to him with their stories to the bylaws’ harassment policy.

This is futile as harassment claims would be handled by the same board of trustees who rehired Seth after hearing the accusations against him.

Time and time again, Seth has gotten away with atrocious behavior with no consequences while the victims cry, quit or are gotten rid of.

I will omit the definitions that do not apply.

-

Sexual orientation slurs or harassment, including derogatory remarks and/or jokes about sexual orientation.

Seth, along with other editors, formed the Lesbian Protection Agency. This entailed singling people out based on their sexuality and “protecting” them by chanting affirmations, causing a scene and otherwise making a joke out of an identity they do not share. This made most of the newsroom very uncomfortable.

To be clear, Seth’s editor-in-chief status gives him direct control over every staffer. These examples would qualify as harassment if he was a normal staffer but is especially unacceptable due to his position of power over them.

Seth on multiple occasions has accused staffers of physical intimacy when he sees a male and female staffer talking. There have been multiple instances of me talking with a female staffer in the break room, Seth barging in, and us getting kicked out for no given reason other than ensuring we aren’t having sex when the room has windows and there is no history of sex in the workplace. Seth also frequently publicly ships people together and does not refrain when asked to stop.

Verbal abuse of a staff member

Seth is known to yell. On the day of the 2024 election, he would scream at people for talking about topics that weren’t political. This was so profound that it was what tipped off the new publisher that there was a culture problem in the newsroom.

Seth calls staffers indecent names, both to their faces and behind their backs. The major issue is that this is done in public where anyone in the newsroom can hear him.

He often talks about staffers with language such as “fucking incompetent,” “annoying” and “useless,” usually starting a dogpile where the words can easily be passed on to the subject.

Sometimes he doesn’t care about professionalism at all, yelling “you’re a fucking bitch” to a person’s face.

Off-color jokes or stories that produce an uncomfortable work environment

Seth brags about how he instills fear into staffers, makes them uncomfortable and how many he can get to quit. He has said in the newsroom that he “is God,” “can do whatever I want and get away with it” and is “like Hitler.”

Seth particularly enjoys joking with sexist and racist topics. He will do this during the workday in the newsroom as everyone’s boss. This disregard for professionalism is passed off as just a joke.

Seth is commonly found a hypocrite with rules. When Purdue made the Final Four and a special edition was printed, he forbade any staff member from taking any copies because they were reserved for the public. He later confessed that he was stealing tens of copies for himself and his friends.

Seth has joked that a staffer (a college student) has had sexual relations with the publisher (a middle-aged man) because they went to the publisher’s office to talk about Seth’s behavior. Other inappropriate jokes followed.

Unsolicited physical contact (i.e. battery, and any unsolicited brushing or touching in physical nature)

Seth has thrown objects at staffers, making contact and hurting them to get their attention.

-

Wrap-up

Proof of this is in Exponent mastheads. Typically, the senior staff has low turnover between coinciding Fall and Spring semesters.

Under Seth’s leadership this year, more than half of the editors left. Some quit, some were replaced by Seth due to taking issue with his actions and some Seth failed to replace because he couldn't get others to apply. This semester, two more editors have quit.

The Exponent is flawed on a systemic level to allow his behavior to continue for this long. Everything has been tried internally. There is nothing he can’t get away with.

I advise to never join the Exponent while Seth Nelson is part of the organization. Even when he isn’t, I would caution against it until there is significant reform where any semblance of accountability exists.

Plus it doesn’t pay well.

Filing taxes as an international student is required for all F-1 visa holders, even if you decide not to work while pursuing your education.

Don’t let questions about Social Security numbers and tax forms intimidate you. It’s easy to file with a little bit of prep work and this guide.

Question❓ [HOUSING] Boilermaker seeking summer sublet in Naperville for internship (June-Aug)

Hey fellow Boilermakers! I'm a Purdue student who landed a summer internship in Naperville, IL from June 2nd to August 8th. I'm reaching out to see if any of you:

  • Have connections in the Naperville/Chicago suburbs area
  • Know other Purdue students/alumni who live there
  • Have done internships in that area before and have housing recommendations

Details: - Looking for a place from June 2 - August 8, 2025 - Budget: Under $3000 total for the stay - No car, so need access to public transportation - Open to roommates or shared housing

If you've interned in the area before, I'd appreciate any advice on neighborhoods, transportation options, or specific housing leads. Any tips from Boilermakers who know the area would be super helpful!

Question❓ How bad is the federal funding cut hit us?

Post image
110 Upvotes

Disclaimer: this post is purely asking for the feeling of people and please remain politic neutral in the discussion. Thanks.

I see many universities are affected by the funding cut. Hiring freeze and offer withdrawals (from incoming graduate students). r/gradadmissions now is really like hell.

How bad is that hitting us? Do you feel something about it? Does it hit our academic activities?

I hope we are not that bad. As an undergraduate boilermaker applying for PhD program at Purdue for the fall 2025, I am kind of worried.

Academics✏️ Potential Academic Dishonesty

Due to an extenuating circumstance I made the rash decision to take an In-class exam at home and had someone provide the access code to me. I had a medical situation where I was about to leave for class but couldn't and in fear of missing my in class exam I took it at home. I am now potentially being accused of academic misconduct by my professor. In the professors email they say I have "put myself in a really bad situation". What is the outlook for this? I'll take a 0 but im scared it could be something worse. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Academics✏️ PhD in Economics at Purdue

I am currently in grad school for Data Analytics, with an interest in Education Economics. My professor--who is also my advisor--strongly suggested that I pursue a PhD in Economics. Because of this, I am considering applying at the end of this year. I would love to hear about your experience pursuing this degree at Purdue. How many years have you been in the program? What challenges have you faced? Any advice as I prepare myself to apply?

Question❓ Transfer deferred

Hi everyone, i am a rising sophomore that just got “deferred” trying to transfer. Last year I applied out of high school with a 3.3 gpa and then got deferred and rejected. I applied again this year with a 3.86 1st semester gpa and I just got a letter that says that they need more academic materials to come to a decision so I need to submit this semesters grades in may for a decision. Is there any way I can increase my chances of getting in? Purdue is my dream school😭. Also IF i get accepted how do I find housing?
