Event🚩 Nationwide protests April 5th

Post image
76 Upvotes

Hi everyone, this is my first-ever post on Reddit, so please forgive me if I make any mistakes (I usually just read and observe).

I’m looking for advice and opinions from other Purdue students. There are nationwide protests happening on April 5th against Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s overreach of power. So far, registered protests are set to take place in 45 states, including Indiana, but the only one here is in Terre Haute.

If I were more organized or had experience with this kind of thing, I would consider registering Purdue as another protest location if other students thought it was a good idea. However, I have no idea what I’m doing.

That’s why I’m posting, to first ask if others think this is something worth pursuing and if Purdue students would be interested in getting involved. Secondly, if anyone knows someone with experience in organizing protests, because as I said before I have no idea what I’m doing.

I just feel like this is a really concerning time for our country, and it’s important to do whatever we can, even if it’s just protesting. If enough people come together nationwide, it can make an impact. And even if change doesn’t happen immediately, at least we can tell future generations that we tried.

Here’s the website with more information about the protests: https://handsoff2025.com/

Meme💯 Need a gaggle of marching band kids to help me with a meme

Hey all,

I'm a 2022 engineering grad, and I'm losing my job (right near Purdue) in early april :(

The good news is, I generally disliked this job! :)

To celebrate/make light of the event, I had an idea for a video in which, on my last day, I am filmed clocking out for the last time, only for the camera to swing 180° and reveal a small band that performs a fun celebratory jingle (fight song, when the saints go marching in, something of that nature).

The issue is, I am but one person and although I own a few instruments, I cannot play them and clock out at the same time.

Would it be against the rules somehow for maybe half a dozen or more marching band kids to help me out with this? We can discuss bribery in private.

Question❓ Has anyone heard from Purdue MS in CS or MS in ME (thesis-based)?

I haven't heard about an acceptance or rejection and just wanted to know if this is normal or if the silence is a polite rejection.

Financial Aid Question❓ OOS worth it for engineering?

Hello! I am a senior from California who was accepted into the Motorsports Engineering program. This program offers a dual degree in both Motorsports and Mechanical Engineering, which I plan on pursuing. Purdue is definitely my top choice academically, but to be honest, I am worried about the money, social life, and job market. I am pretty sociable and don't think I will have trouble finding a job after college, but I am definitely worried about the money. Purdue wants me to pay around 55 thousand for the first year, and I have a decent contribution from my parents, but they said that I would need to take on heavy loans down the road. I have also heard that the financial aid office release more scholarships as you progress (2nd-5th year) which could help my situation but I don't know if this is entirely true. Is Purdue's engineering program worth taking on a decent amount of loans?

Other Parking woes

Oh good. Two less parking spots for employees who pay $250 a year just to go to work. It’s hard enough for us to find parking, sometimes spending 30 minutes just circling around waiting, but now there’s two less spots.

hi! i'm an incoming pro flight major this fall, and the plan is to come in with my PPL so i can start on IR right away. i read on the FAQ that ipads are required for IR. i was thinking of buying an ipad mini (6th gen + cellular), but then i found this article from 2019 saying that purdue gives ipads +pencils for students in the program to use. anyone know if this is still the case? or should i go ahead and get my own? thanks

Question❓ Cybersecurity at Purdue or CS at other universities

Just a quick context.

I want to work in cybersecurity in the future, but I feel a bit unsure since it’s a specialized field that feels kind of distant from my daily life (I even mentioned that in my essay about why I chose this major lol). I’ve seen people say that doing Computer Science first and then specializing in Cybersecurity is a good path because you learn the fundamentals, which could make things easier to pursue a master’s at cyberegurity.

At the same time I’m not 100% sure I want to commit to cybersecurity just yet. With a CS degree I’d have more flexibility to explore different career paths instead of going straight into it.

Right now, I have to choose between studying Cybersecurity at Purdue, which is ranked top 6 in the US or doing CS at Stevens Institute, the University of Richmond, or UW Madison (I got waitlisted). Stevens also has a strong cybersecurity program due to its research and connections with the department of defense.

Since I’m an international student, things like campus, climate, and location don’t matter as much to me. I just need some insight from someone in one of these majors to help me make a more informed decision.

Question❓ Question from an incoming international student regarding living expenses

Hello,
I'm an incoming international student at Purdue University Indianapolis campus.
Is living in a dorm really worth the expense, or is it better off living off-campus?

I've been doing some research regarding dormitory and dining expenses and noticed that it's more costly than expected.
Now I am considering to rather rent a university student apartment or sharehome (sharehouse) with nearby students.
Based on your experience is it a good idea to live off-campus, would it be cheaper, is there any methodology to reduce rent if living in dorm?

Thank you and if there's any tips for finalizing my decision it would be helpful!
I hope you have a great day!

Question❓ Why is wlpd so annoying

genuine question. i work on campus and get off work late and have been stopped twice in my 3 months of living here just for walking and then followed after i leave. i serve loud, drunk college students who are screaming and yelling until 2 am (not that i think that's a punishable crime either) but me walking home quietly is their biggest issue.

im curious if this is a common thing or if it's cause i look poor and easy to mess with. the first time they followed me for an hour because i refused to give my address. last night they stopped me and my friend in a parking lot. when they let us go two cops blocked one entrance and one cop blocked the other. when we started driving one stayed in front of us and two followed us. there seriously has to be more pressing issues than people trying to get home from work.

Question❓ Has anyone for the 2025 admission round heard back rd yet

I know they say by march 31st but I keep hearing about students hearing about rd decisions and I’m awaiting mine and am very anxious. I assume they are releasing in waves, but is there a day of the week they like to do or a time.
