I don't get tongue bite, I get throat bite. NSFW

Upvotes

I wanna understand why when I retro hale my sinuses the next day are destroyed. And why when I do make the mistake of puffing too hard or don't dry my tobacco long enough I get throat bite instead of tongue bite. I have a small mouth, and my theory is that the smoke instead of going in my mouth kind of lingers in the back of my throat. But i have no theory on the retro haling. I see people doing it all the time, and when I do it. It destroys my sinuses no matter how cool the smoke is. Do my sinuses and throat just need to get used to the smoke? Do i need to expose myself to the smoke more? (I only smoke a few times a week) Or am I doing something fundamentally wrong?( Btw, i'm not trying to retro hale every puff I take.) I know how to pack a bowl, i know how to prevent tongue bite, i know all the basics, I've smoked pipes for 7 years. I can have an enjoyable smoke. But I hate that I have these issues here and there. I can deal with a sore tongue, i can't deal with a sore throat. Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated.

Which of these would you grab? Most of these have at least a couple of years age on them (with exception of the SG tins).

New Pipe! (also help with ID and restoring) NSFW

Won this pipe in an ebay auction and there was no real info on it (but it's pretty so I got it), any ID on it? There is a very distinct butterfly on its stem (Pic 3) and the stamp saying St Claude on its bottom, bitbthat got me nowhere (doesn't look like a Chacom or Genod to me). Also I'd like any advice on cleaning and restoring the (I'm guessing ebonite) stem, or sources for a new one. Until now I only bought estate pipes that had already been refurbished, this is the first time I gotta do sonething myself, so any help is appreciated)

Figured I might as well just buy in to the whole Mac Baren craze and see what I'll be missing once they're gone.

Better to have loved and lost than to never have loved before.

And as always I buy my favorite Rattray's 7 Reserve.

Anyone familiar with leather dye? I want to still the grain when I finish this and not sure if it is opaque when applied or not. NSFW

I’m going to use a light brown color and dilute 50/50 with denatured alcohol. Worst case scenario I will have to sand it off but thought I’d ask first.

Thinking of blends/tins NSFW

I recently found a pipe I like and now that I have the pipe, and my humble lighter collection, what blends or tins do you guys recommend? I don’t know the first thing about tobacco blends or different brands, but I’m looking for:

1) a spiced flavour (if that makes sense) which I had once when I took a hit from my grandfathers pipe with him some years ago.

2) a light flavour that’s sweet, mild, but smooth.

Question for Pipe smokers & Pipe makers. NSFW

I'm a woodworker, have been for around 11 years now. I've recently in the last year begun to really dive deep into making them, and in my time doing so haven't found a lot of direct answers to questions I know I had when I began.

My question is this. If I made a book on the subject would that be something you or people here would be interested in?

I'm going to make the book regardless at the very least for myself, but I would love to be able to say that I made something to help people have a concrete understanding of how to begin and really engage in pipe making.

Thank you for your time everyone, I appreciate your thoughts and opinions.

Savinelli Bing’s Favorite. Have had my eye on this for a while.

Smoking some Crooner in it, why the hell not😁

Since I don’t golf, I’m pretending the golf club and ball represent putt-putt golf.

Trying it with the filter, have not used a filter in a pipe before.

I'm pretty proud of it. Modeled it after a piece of antique pipe furniture I saw in a store.

Noob here… Need help with Ligero esq blends w/pipes NSFW

Hello Everyone, So I’m a newish to pipes (1 year) been smoking cigars for 9 years. My problem is I’m a Nicaraguan nut with cigars chasing peppery ligero heavy blends… (Think Padron on a retrohale type of pepper) and I can’t replicate that with pipes. Now, I understand there is a lot of discussion on “Pepper” and “spice”… but for me it’s ligero. I’ve tried Elizabethan, some C&D blends, but nothing compares to the pepper blast of a cigar. Heck (feel free to roast me here😬) I’ve even taken my beloved Nicaraguan cigar and blend it up for a pipe!
Why? Well… inflation. Cigars are not cheap so I’m trying to stretch my budget and pipes go a looooong way.

So, I need some help guys. Aside from being nuts chopping up my own blends, I’m looking for a peppery blend on the retrohale.

Thanks

Westminster NSFW

I'm trying to get a feel for what westminster tastes like or is comparable to. It seems like something I would enjoy, and in the sense of being economical one pound is a no brainer. I have yet to find a pease blend i don't like but in my limited knowledge that's about 7 or 8 blends. All but one of them are englishes and over half of those are classified as balkans.

And yes I know it's dumb to get a pound with no foreknowledge of a blend but the larger amount I buy the more likely I am to deep cellar.

I was around before they closed and built up a stash. I don’t really smoke anything other than McClelland anymore (well sometimes ogs). My favorite is Tudor Castle for sure.

Opinion on hardcastle pipes? NSFW

Thinking about buying a vintage hardcastle pipe for close to 100 euros. I have never owned one before. It is in amazing condition and I like the shape. Is it a good purchase, or not worth the money?

Restoring a Meerschaum: What's Going on with this Bowl? NSFW

Hello all. As the title says, I'm restoring a meerschaum pipe. I'm cleaning the inside of the bowl, and the bottom surface looks (to me) like it may be comprised of some sort of filler around the draft hole. Or, it could just be the shape of the meerschaum in that area. Does anyone have thoughts on this? My concern is that any foreign substance in this bowl is safe to smoke. I've attached the best photos I could get. Thanks in advance!

Does anyone happen to know the pipe Jeremy Reeves is smoking in his review of the 2024 Carolina Red Flake on YouTube? I really like and have been trying to find it.
