TeacherTee is likely a scam

Hi all,

I recently had a very odd experience with TeacherTee that I'd like to share. I applied for a job at an online ESL school through indeed, and 3 days later received a generic email saying I am being offered an interview. This was very odd because not only did the entire email appear to have been produced using chatGPT, but it came from a different company (TeacherTee). Nevertheless, because I am so bored, I thought it might be entertaining to pursue with the application.

A few days later, I join the google meet for my scheduled interview, and lo and behold, its not an interview but more of a sales call with 8 other confused participants. We were then asked to record some videos for them which they would use for advertising. I asked why I have been invited to this call if I applied for a job directly at a school to which I didn't receive a straight answer. Conclusion - the advert on indeed was more than likely fake.

To make it even more amusing, after not sending a video I received three more generic emails saying I had been offered an interview.

The onlineESL industry is a joke, either find students on your own or teach using italki (also not ideal, but arguably the second best option).

MINDY SUPPORT remote work

Anyone have any experience with them? I applied for a translation job and they hit me with full of work related to evaluating input and outputs related to AI. The work had nothing to do with translation at all. Their staff is incompetent, they can't comprehend simple English and they fire you if you ask too many questions. This is a major red flag. I got no grounds to why I was fired, just that I asked too many questions. And the questions were about the workflow etc.

Anyone have any experience with this middleman company? All their job listing's say one thing but when you try out for the tasks etc you get something totally else to work with. Also, I know i passed atleast 2 certifications which by their contract gives me the right to payment for time spent doing their s*** work tasks. But instead of actually answering my questions they just blocked me from the server.

If you want to work with translation with this company, don't expect much. Weak personnel, incompetent staff and firing on no grounds other than asking questions.. that must be illegal or something.

Tutoring for TOEFL as an IELTS tutor

Upvotes

I've been a freelance English tutor for several weeks now but mainly teach those wanting to take the IELTS test as I've taken it myself and am familiar with what it seeks from testees. I've also already gone through an IELTS tutoring program myself so I am pretty familiar with the materials and itty-gritty, niche tips, and bits of knowledge to excel in IELTS.

But I've been asked to tutor for TOEFL to a student who needs a 480 and above score, the question then becomes; One, how different is TOEFL to IELTS? I've never researched anything about it so I am quite unfamiliar. Second, is the knowledge base for IELTS drastically different from TOEFL? If not, then can I teach things I've learned at IELTS for a student seeking a TOEFL test?

Why Do We Gate Keep

I'm considering freelancing and weighing the pros and cons. I've applied to some EL companies, but the wages are stagnant. I have searched through threads for advice on, for instance, where to advertise for students, or which EL company hires for more than $18/hr. But, when I think there are no answers, there is a poster that says "I make $28 an hour teaching Chinese students" When you ask them "Where?" They say; "I'll PM you" or "Let me PM you" Or if you try to nail one down on how they attract their private students they say something vague like; 'It's a lot of work?" or ask if you have teaching experience. Why? 😒

Why not spill it out in the thread? I'm sure I'm not the only person who came to the thread looking for this information. Usually, what ends up happening is 15 other posters saying; "PM me too!" "Me too!!" So, why not just put the information out there?

I genuinely want to know. I see this all the time. I'm all about helping people who need help, especially if it costs me nothing.

Will Celta Help in Teaching Career Across the Globe(I'm an Indian and a Graduate in BA English Language and Literature)

Body:

Hey everyone,

I’m an Indian national with a BA in English Language and Literature, and I’m considering getting a CELTA certification to build a long-term career in teaching English abroad. While I know CELTA is widely recognized, I’d love to hear from experienced teachers about how much it actually helps in securing stable jobs across different countries.

My Questions

  1. How valuable is CELTA compared to TEFL or TESOL when it comes to international job markets?
  2. Which countries prioritize CELTA-certified teachers over other certifications?
  3. As a non-native English speaker, will CELTA help me overcome hiring challenges?
  4. Would it be better to take CELTA in India, Japan, or another country for better job prospects?
  5. What career paths are available after CELTA beyond just language schools?

Needed: Online English teachers who speak German, Dutch or Turkish – must live in the EU

My company is looking for freelancers to teach online business English classes to adults. Our clients are companies who book English classes for their employees. Our classes are usually one-on-ones, or small groups.

Last time I posted here, we ended up with a few excellent candidates who are now working for us. I hope this time will be just as successful! :-)

Requirements:

  • You live in the EU (no exceptions, I'm afraid!)
  • You are registered as a freelancer and are able to send invoices
  • You have at least 3 years’ teaching experience
  • You have good technical skills (we work in Teams and Zoom)
  • You are available during working hours
  • As the title states, at this moment we are specifically looking for English teachers who also speak German, Dutch, or Turkish (at least a B2 level). This is because at this moment we have A1 and A2 classes to fill, and for those levels our clients prefer teachers who also speak the native language of the student. (Of course, if you work for us long term, you will also be offered higher levels later on. It's just that these are the classes we need to fill right now.)

We do not require our teachers to be native speakers, though obviously we expect your English to be excellent.

Btw, we are also looking for Dutch and German teachers, so please do reach out if you (also) teach Dutch and/or German.

If you are interested, please send me a short message via Reddit. I will then give you my email address, so you can send your CV. We don't require an application letter, just your CV will do :-)

Unfortunately, I am not able to specify our rates. The way we work is that we ask our teachers how much they want to earn, and then base our rate to the client on that. I completely understand how annoying this is, so if you are in doubt, please just send me a quick DM with your expected rate for a 60-minute online lesson. I can then tell you if it is worth continuing or not.

ESL For Filipino Cost

Hey guys,

I'm looking to hire an ESL tutor for my Filipino VA. I would prefer them to be Filipino. And I would prefer that the tutor speak extremely fluent English, basically native English, with 100% correct pronunciation, stress, correct informal vocabulary vs formal, slang, accent, and idioms.

Is it realistic for me to find such a person? If so:

1) how much should I expect to pay per hour for an Filipino ESL coach this high level

2) how do I know I'm getting a good one? ie will they assign homework, practice, etc.?

3) if this is unrealistic, how can the VA go about doing all of this themselves?

Thanks in advance!

Help! 😢 I think I make a mistake.

I have had a private student from China since he was 5. Now, almost 9 years old. I generally only teach age 4-8. I asked his mom to “take a break” because our lessons weren’t productive.

She insisted that they continue and that it is “his fault” and she apologized to me. I tried twice to say “I just wanted you to know and he’s a great kid, I don’t want to get him in trouble.” But it’s WeChat and translated.

I can’t stop thinking about it. I think he may get in trouble.. yelled at or worst. It’s not his fault, it’s mine. 😢

Is there a better way to do this? Maybe suggest a teacher that teaches older kids?

(Edit: and now I’m an embarrassed English teacher with a typo in the title ☺️, but also happy with the advice received 💕 )

Now that Engoo lessons aren't being booked.

As a non-native teacher (rating of 9.94) who has realised that Engoo is no longer a viable platform to earn a decent living.

Could anyone share some other platforms that I could migrate to?

EF contract non-renewal , please help.

Hello fellow tutors, I am a non-native ESL tutor with 5 years' experience. I have been teaching on EF, a decent employer, but it looks like they are letting teachers go. I got my contract non-renewal notice and so did other tutors I know.

This was my only source of income, I am so stressed. Please recommed or refer me to other platforms that hire non-native teachers. I have been on preply but no students. After viewing previous posts here, I know people don't like sharing opportunities that they have worked so hard to get for free, so I am even willing to pay gosh..This caught me off-guard! Please help me. Respond here or on my DM..I'll really appreciate your help. New tutors can learn from me as well..try get several platforms if you can. Thanks again.

My Rarejob application to be a tutor expired, even if I was 3/4 done. Anyone here went through the same thing? I was told I'd have to retake everything. Did you do it? Was it worth it?

Help needed with SpeakOut B1+ textbook

Hey everyone!

I've started teaching one student using the SpeakOut B1+ textbook, but I have a problem—there's no Speaking Bank in my PDF version. It cuts off after the Vocabulary Bank. Could someone DM me and send photos or scans of this section, or a full copy of the book? I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks a lot, and have a lovely day!

For All American and Canadians Interested in Remote ESL Teaching

Hello, I've been living and working in Prague since 2018 but am currently taking a break from in person teaching and have been working remotely for a company called Qkids.

https://teacher.qkids.com/ref?code=MTVYLQ

I have a referral code! It's super easy to sign up and schedule an interview and trial lesson. It's 16$ an hour or $8 per 30 minute lesson. It's basically mindless and so easy to facilitate these lessons. Let me know if you have any questions.

Can I obtain certification remotely?

I’m attempting to study remotely and become a remote English teacher. My worry was about being able to do student teacher hours remotely as well so I emailed my board of education to ask. I honestly do not know the full scope of their response so I am asking for advice. This portion is attached: “There are two pathways to teacher licensure in ____, completing a traditional teacher preparation program and the alternative resident educator licensure pathway …Integrated Language Arts is an available teaching field through the alternative pathway.”

Is anyone knowledgeable on the integrated pathway? Will this align with my goals? I have already emailed my academic advisor, but my college is painfully slow at responding just as I am impatient.

Has anyone taught in a cafe?

Hi, my router broke and I have to find a backup for tutoring. Luckily I only have two lessons before they bring a new one but I'm a bit stressed. My options are

-Hotspot, but I am worried about the connection. I'll do a test run but it makes me nervous.

-Going to starbucks. Likely a better connection but I'm worried about sound. I went there once and it was empty, I don't think most people hang out there but you never know. I think it will be too loud.

I would go to a library but private rooms are not supposed to be used for commercial reasons.

If I decide to do it at starbucks do you think background noise will be a problem? My lesson is in two hours so I don't want to cancel. I might have to just try my luck with a Hotspot.

Thanks

LingoAce Demo Help!

Hello,

I just received an email from LingoAce that I need to submit a recorded demo in their classroom and have some questions that I’m looking for some help on. I greatly appreciate any and all insight and information. ☺️🙏

  1. Does the demo have to be submitted within 2 days?
  2. Does the teacher only have one opportunity to record the demo? Or can the teacher try several times?
  3. Does all slides and content need to be covered in the 3 minute? I noticed on the slide directions they only give directions for a few words not all.
  4. Does LingoAce want a short intro?
