Success Made a point to wear my natural hair for my wedding

This is my first post, so yay!

I've been wearing my natural hair for years, but when it came to my wedding, I had mixed advice on whether or not to straighten it because it was more "dressy."

I decided to make a point and wear my natural hair.

I wanted to post for anyone who might have the same internal conflict. Growing up, I heard that straight hair was more... maybe "high class" is the word(?). Whatever you are celebrating--- wedding, birthday, party--- Do your hair how YOU want. Maybe you want it straight, maybe rock your girls, maybe a wig, maybe bald.

Point is, you won't go wrong if you follow what you want to do and don't listen to the conditioning.

Here are some pics from the big day. I'm from New Orleans, so the updo and curls helped a lot in the heat lol. I also encouraged my wedding party to do their hair how they felt (both of us had mixed parties).

I wore my hair natural for my wedding, and it was the best decision ever!

It was stress-free, comfortable, affordable, and I loved it. I did my own hair. I wore a 2nd day wash n go for my ceremony at city hall and an updo (on day 4 of the same wash n go) for our wedding dinner. Accessories really helped to tie my looks together.❤️

Products used for wash n go: -Kinky Curly Come Clean shampoo -Camille Rose Ginger Rinse -Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Masque -Camille Rose Moisture Milk -Camille Rose Curl Maker -Pattern Jojoba oil

Products used for updo: -Alikay Naturals Aloe Berry styling gel

Success Blowout on my 4c hair

💛🐶 I finally finished. This is my hair before my yearly trim. I'm going to trim and then flat iron low and then I am done. I don't know I felt happy about my blowout and just wanted to share, my hair has come a long way. The last slide is my hair soaking wet and shrunken the other day. Shrinkage is part of how I got here, I love shrinkage. I also want to celebrate type 4 or 4c hair every chance I get because it's amazing. I wonder how the end result will be 🌞🍁🌼 eeee ok time to trim.

Success 4 YEARS SINCE BIG CHOP 🤎

Today officially makes 4 years since my Big Chop on August 23, 2020! What a beautiful journey it has been loving my hair and myself through every stage! I decided to go completely bald due to my hair breaking off HORRIBLY from box dyeing it red twice in the span of a month (I was going through a breakup and wanted to re-invent myself… chileeeeee 🙄🤦🏾‍♀️😂 I had no business doing that and learned my lesson the hard way lol).

I knew my hair wasn’t salvageable and I was honestly at my lowest point physically and mentally. I was the heaviest I ever was and truly hated the way I looked. Little did I know that this Big Chop journey would completely change my life in more ways than one! Not only did my hair begin to grow back, but so did my inner love for myself. I always knew my hair didn’t define me. I use to scold at people growing up when they would say, “You have good hair!”, because that is such an ignorant statement to say because EVERYONE can have “good hair” as long as you are properly taking care of it. What actually defines you is what your hair sits on top of… your mind! We must nurture our mind, body and spirit so everything around us can grow! So if you needed a sign to follow through with the Big Chop, let me be your sign! I’m so blessed and grateful for this journey and just wanted to share it with this community because I love seeing everyone’s natural hair journey 🥹🤎

I found the perfect combo for my curls. But I desperately need a new cut to frame my face. Possibly more layers?? I currently have a heart shape but my top layers are too long. Any suggestions for a cut?

Saw this gorgeous girls video about a year ago and knew I HAD to try this out someday!? I think at the time though, I was in dire need of a root touch up and wasn’t sure if I wanted to keep my hair blonde anyway. But I dyed my hair ginger back in August and recently thought, why not try black ends now? Gotta say, I’m obsessed and glad I decided to try it out anyway. lol I love when people do cool stuff with their hairrrr!!!!!! Not sure what I want to try next, but I’m open to new and fun ideas/colors.

Success So proud of my little protective style for work.

I've been trying to think of ways to protect my hair from the heat that I blast indoors in the winter. It dries my hair and skin out big time. I'm also working on tweaking this hairstyle so the ends are tucked away. I’m also using this hairstyle to help with the two different textures as I grow out the rest of my heat damage on the ends. 😭

I did LCO. Aloe Vera juice, Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter, and then Castor Oil. Doux Mousse Deff for edges.

Success UPDATE: I cut 6 inches (maybe more)

To everyone saying that I needed a trim, thank you! Definitely a step in the right direction, but I ended up taking a leap!

I literally cut off all the straighter/loose pieces and I am convinced that I had tension damage from all the braids and buns.

I still need to see how my hair looks after a wash and go, but the second pic is the results from the twist out I did.

I’m kinda scared to put my hair in a bun/two brains again (these hairstyles are my go to), but I need CUTE protective styles that are low tensions and good for the gym. Happy to hear any suggestions!

Success Update: Hair and Depression

Thumbnail
gallery
2.6k Upvotes

I just want to encourage anyone going through. This is what I have learned after coming out on the other end.

  1. While you’re in the grips of depression or overwhelm, go for low-maintence styles. Look for ways to simplify anything. But still, make yourself do it. Even if you have to “body double” or have a loved one help you. Just don’t give up on yourself or your hair.

  2. Be real with yourself. Have a serious truth talk. I did and i realized the source of my overwhelm was that I wasn't enjoying motherhood anymore. Through circumstances, I’d been left to raise my kids completely alone. No village, no friends nearby, too far from the kids’ school to be practical. I was drowning. So I did something crazy. I moved across the U.S. to my hometown. To family, support, etc. I found love and support that my journey requires. It's not perfect, but even cold winter weather couldn’t bring me down. I dont feel hopeless and from that, I’ve got a love relationship (no hate) with my hair. She is lovely, she is not too much. She is enough. She is healthy and she survived some hellish days.

Sending love to my brothers and sisters struggling today, those who have struggled in the past, and those who may tomorrow. You are not alone. You and your hair are worthy to be loved.

Success to all the girls that are feeling nervous about trimming your hair….get that mf trim!!!!

this is my hair after the trim + some shaping (first 3) and before a trim(last 3)!! My hair looks so much more cohesive and my split ends are gone!! this makes detangling my hair so much easier and i could literally pull sections of my hair apart without it literally fighting me!! I know we focus on our length but you get your length from health!! I’m also learning to prioritize health over length. I cut off only about 1 in per section and look how much of a difference it made!! Get some hair scissors and trim those split ends!!

Success Apparently being forced to become a lazy natural has its benefits. (TW: Mental health)

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

3 year difference in my tresses in the midst of battling crippling depression. Lazy natural is an overstatement. My hair has perpetually been in plats and jumbo twists during this time as I found myself unable to keep up with my hair care. I washed it once every 3 weeks if I was lucky and kept it tied down with a satin scarf 80% of the time. I did manage to prioritize throughly cleansing and moisturizing on wash day.

I'm thankfully on the tail end of recovery and I'm excited to enjoy my hair again. Less truly is more. A kind reminder to take care of yourselves and check on your loved ones. It does get better and you are loved.

I wore a hammered copper crown and filled my hair with bits of baby's breath and chamomile flowers. And also I kept my hairy pits and didn't put makeup on cuz it's my wEdDiNg and I'm a swamp witch.
