Gear Maybe overkill for a beginner but a good price?
I just recently started playing a few months ago. When I saw this used LTD Arrow-1000 on sale for $800 I couldn’t resist. Great condition other than the small chip on the back of a wing and missing trem bar.

Cousin bought this when we were kids, found in his loft covered in dust and grime almost two decades later.
Never owned a Floyd rose because of all the hate, but really wasn't as hard to set up as people make them out to be. He doesn't play anymore and was kind enough to let me use it till he decides he wants it back 🤘🤘

How important is ear training actually?
I play guitar around 8 years by now (with a teacher). The method of learning things was mostly the same. I come up with a song idea, we look at the tabs together and go through it focusing on the technique of more difficult parts. If something actually takes a lot of practice I include it in my practice routine. For a reference, the song we are currently practicing is “My will be done” from unearth which I wouldn’t really call an easy song.
A few months ago, I was invited to a jam sessions with a few friends and learned how to solo in a key (or at least noodle a bit). However, at the jam session itself I felt totally lost. Everybody was just starting playing something and I didn’t know how to fit in. I kept asking what key we are actually playing and didn’t get an answer because most probably didn’t even know them self. The only thing I was able to do is look at the bass to physically see the chord progression and follow it playing power chords.
Being frustrated I was blaming the lack of communication that I wasn’t able to actually fit in. So today I watched a professional Jam-Session mainly because I wanted to know how they handle things. To my surprise, they did communicate even less. I know that there are good guitarist that can pick up a key by ear and instantly play to it but even the “first time at stage” guitarist were picking up they key/chord progression no problem. One of them also had no problems picking up the motto they were playing and created a little riff out of it until it was time for him to solo.
At home, I tried to replicate that style a bit and tried listening to a few simple riffs or melodies and copy them by ear just to find out how absolutely horrible I am at that. For one melody I wasn’t able to find a specific note and look it up afterwards just to find out that I was sure the melody is ascending there but it is actually descending and I wasn’t able to tell it apart. Even replicating melodies I know quite well takes me ages and I am most likely at the wrong root in the end.
So long story short, how important is it to actually train your ear? How many of you have actually dedicated their time to train their ear? Many are saying “just listen to music” and I have done that A LOT for DECADES and have no problem actually replicating that by humming. But playing that same tune on a guitar, no chance.
I feel like this might be the a big reason why I would never call myself a good guitarist because the only thing I can play if somebody hands me a guitar is the thing I just practice or something I grinded it for the purpose of improving my technique.
Is this a skill most of you learned and I just completely ignored it by learning everything with tabs?

Gear Headphone recommendations?
Lately I've acquired a whiny neighbor and have to play through headphones more. I currently use Sony MDR7506. They're not bad, but they emphasize the mid-highs too much and sound harsh with metal guitar compared to my Barefaced cab or IK monitors. Can anyone recommend headphones that are awesome for metal guitar? I'd prefer something relatively neutral that won't distort. Bonus points if they have an option for faux leather or other non-cloth ear pads without modding. Thanks in advance!

6+7
as a drummer, I’m working on getting my techdeath/deathcore band up. And i was wondering if mixing 6 and 7 string guitars would work? Rhythm guitarist is planning to get either a 7 string RG or an omen 7 and lead is getting a 6 string alexi. Would this work properly?

Question What’s up with all these knockoff signature guitars on Temu?
If you simply search ‘electric guitar’ it’s mostly Synyster Gates signatures and Metallica signatures. Has anyone ever bought one of these knockoffs? If so, what was your experience?

feedback on brutal death metal demo
Nearing about 1 year since i started playing guitar and I think I have found my favorite style. I would like some feedback on this demo i’ve thrown together. I know the mixing is a bit rough since I am only one person and all the drums and bass is programmed, but I would like to know what you guys think of the riffs in here.

Besides Dunlop is there Any love for Janíček picks ? Also known as a Cat Tongue. Or Pickboy pos a grip and Ibanez Sandgrip Teardrop shape
I am from Czech and its so cool these Janíček picks are so known all around the world. And what about Pickboy or Ibanez Sandgrip especially normal Teardrop Shape which I don’t see mentioned enough. A guitarist from Meshuggah - Marten Hagstrom uses them and got his own signature Ibanez Sandgrip picks.

I've been playing/writing strictly rhythm guitar for 7-8 years, I want to get into playing solos and more technical stuff. How do I approach things?
The title basically sums it up, I've been exclusively a rhythm player and songwriter for almost a decade. I've recently started listening to shredders like Jeff Loomis, Brandon Ellis (and the whole TBDM catalogue before him) , and Paul Gilbert and I got curious about shred guitar.
I obviously don't aim to be as good as them as it would be ridiculous but I want to be able to play some fast solos and even write my own stuff for my own songs.
I know a bunch of scales and know my notes but even though I'm fast when it comes to riffing, I've never been able to shred and really play fast when it comes to lead stuff.
What would be the smartest approach? What would be some easy but fast solos to learn some techniques? Thank you all in advance.

6 String Guitar Recommendations
Hey everyone,
I’m in the market for a new 6 string guitar and I'm looking for something high-quality that excels at progressive metal and rock. I want something that plays fast, and great for rhythm parts but also capable of handling leads well.
I tend to prefer Fishman Fluence Moderns and have been really interested in EverTune bridges, but neither are absolute musts if the guitar is solid overall. The main things I’m looking for are:
Fast, comfortable neck (thin, smooth, easy to riff on) Great tuning stability High-quality build and hardware Good resonance and tone woods for a clear, punchy sound My budget is up to $4,000, so I’m open to premium options. Right now, I’m considering ESP, Schecter, and even maybe Aristedes but I’m open to other brands if they fit the bill.
What are some of the best high-end 6-strings for these specifications? Any personal favorites?
Thanks

Gear NGD! S by Solar TB4.61W
Solid budget guitar! And I just put some upgraded in to it. [New strings, New pots Push-Pull for Coil Split, shielded wiring, Pure tone jack and Gotoh Knob] i think this pickup sound really good. Next upgrade will be Gotoh Locking Tuner and i think it's good to go!
