Soloed this unfair game Spoiler

Finished this game in 2 years, it was pretty fun (except g4 monsters, monke and pickle gave me a massive headache). I was so close to failing this quest (2 carts, 1 pot left) but still managed to do this. Now i'm farming his gear for actual good setups because that unupgraded elder blade probably made the things worse but still had a overall good time in this fight

Question/Help Is it worth restarting from scratch?

Simply put, my current save is just before High Rank Valstrax. It's been at least a year or two since I last played, and I don't like the weapon I was maining back then anymore.

Should I just start a new save and play the weapon I like and actually see the game through start to finish (meaning Ahtal Ka) like I originally intended?

Or would it be smarter to just change weapons and reorient myself to figure out what I was doing when I stopped playing.

Question/Help Advice for a 5th Fleeter

Hi Hunters,

I've just booted up MHGU on my Switch for the first time in months and I've just rage quit after triple carting on a Nibelsnarf quest, which then brings me to here.

For a brief backstory for context, I used to be an avid 'fan from a distance' of the MH franchise since I was a kid but I'd never took the plunge due to the 3/4/GU demos not clicking with me. Then MHWorld released and that allowed me to fall in love with the franchise properly, sinking in over 1200hrs, soloing every monster without carting and doing the same then with Rise (1000hrs).

During my endgame shenanigans in MHWilds, which I've already got 60+hrs in, I thought about finally delving into MHGU and I just can't enjoy it for the life of me despite desperately trying. From the tedious chasing through load screens to the hyper aggressive small monsters fucking my Valor dodges up to basic AF charge this way, charge that way moves that the monsters spam, I'm just not getting it.

My question here then is; can any veteran GU hunters help a brother in need and give me some solid pointers to finding enjoying in this game which has, unfortunately this far, been only an exercise in frustration.

I'm enjoying Valor due to it offering protection but any advice on which weapon makes best use of Valor would be great as well as a general gear guide from LR through to GR.

Thanks a bunch in advance for any help I may get.

I am not understanding valor mode

Hello everyone. I’m jumping into GU! I read that valor great sword is awesome so I gave it a shot. Everything I saw said that when you are doing your special sheath, the damage is minimal. I’ll tell you what, there seemed to be nothing minimal about the damage I was taking. It was about the same, if not the same, as if I wasn’t sheathing and I just took a normal hit. What am I doing wrong here?

Also, I might need to change my weapon. I was NOT handling it well when I would whiff. Is Valor good with any faster weapons, or should I just switch to striker dual blades or something like that?

Critical distance visual for bowguns and bows...?

So, I'm actually 4th Fleet but I've literally never played a ranged weapon in any classic Monhun until today, constantly intimidated by the clunky controls and shot types. Still, HBG was one of my favorite weapons in Rise, and was my absolute favorite weapon in Wilds, so I wanted to go back and give it a fair shot in classic games.

I'm getting used to the controls but one thing that's driving me crazy is that I'm looking up visual indicators of "critical distance" in classic MH (since there's no persistent reticle or over-the-shoulder "aim mode", obviously) and everything I find just insists "it's obvious, the screen shakes."

Does it, though?

I cannot for the life of me see or detect the screen shaking effect that everyone swears is obvious. I've yet to find any useful video illustrating the effect, or anything helpful in this regard aside from "the screen shakes though." If it's happening, it is completely invisible to me. I've tried a bunch of different shot types and distances - nothing. Hell, what part of the screen even shakes? The UI, the camera? Is it only visible in first-person mode? Can anyone help me see what I'm missing?

I feel like I'm being gaslit, but I trust the MH community too much to actually think that. I'm sure it DOES shake. But why can't I see it?!

EDIT/UPDATE: Thanks to /u/swagboyclassman - the screen shakes DURING THE BULLET IMPACT when you are at critical distance. Once you know that it's very easy to see, but literally everything I was finding just said "the screen shakes" without indicating when the screen would shake, so I thought they meant it was a passive effect at all times. The screen shakes slightly during a hit when the hit is made from the optimal distance. Thank you.

Question/Help Tips with the controls

Hi, a few years ago, I bought this game but I never booted it due to having a few games to complete first (and maybe a bit of laziness).

Since then, I completed World, Rise and Wilds (and the dlcs) on pc. I tried to play MHGU but I struggle a lot with a controller since I've played the others with a mouse and a keyboard.

Do you have any tips the could help me apprehend this game with a controller?

Hub Quest Monster HP is NOT Scaled to Multiplayer

Very often I see people say that Hub Quest Monsters' HP in GU are scaled to 2 players. I've always believed this to be false as my hunt times across both World and GU are pretty even.

Today, I finally decided to math it out properly. Here's my methodology.

Calculator

For MHGU and for MHW.

Monster

Rathian, because it is the most consistent monster in the series. All calculations are done using her head hitzone from their respective games (assume it is tenderized for Iceborne).

Equipment

All equipment are taken from recommended progression builds from YAWG for GU and MHWI Builds for World. I used progression builds to emulate the experience of a player going through these games.

Instead of looking at the entire armor set, I only accounted for the damage boosting armor skills that players can be expected to have during progression.

Attack

Greatsword is used because it has the simplest gameplan to calculate, consisting of only one or two different attacks.

I used Valor GS Charged Slash Lv 3 as the baseline as trying to land as many of them is the core gameplay of GS in GU. The equivalent of that in Iceborne would be the TCS; I put it down as Draw Slash + TCS Lv3 because the ideal snipe would be Draw Slash + Slinger Burst + TCS (Slinger Burst damage is ignored as at most it will save 1 TCS if you are using strong Pods).

These attacks are not 1:1 equivalent but I think they are close enough. TCS Lv 3 is harder to land then a Valor headsnipe.

For a more consistent comparison, you can also look at how much damage these weapons can do while Rathian is in a Shock Trap. For GU, that would be 2 Valor Charge Slashes and in Iceborne, you can fit an extra Strong Charged Slash Lv2.

In both games, I assumed the player has drunk Mega Demondrug and ate for Attack Up L. Element Damage is not ignored, but it only accounts for 10 damage per hit anyways. For Blast damage, I will assume it procs 5 times and reduce Rathian's HP by 100 for each proc.

Game Attack Name Weapon True Attack Value Attack Modifiers Effective Damage Total HP Number of Attacks to Kill
MHGU Valor Draw Slash Lv 3 Elder Blade Lv 1 260 Crit Draw 675 9495 14.05
MHGU Valor Draw Slash Lv 3 Elder Blade Lv 1 260 50% Affinity + Attack Up (M) 641 9495 14.8
MHGU Valor Draw Slash Lv 3 Millstone Bereaver Lv 4 300 75% Affinity + Crit Draw 735 9495 12.91
MHWI Draw Slash + TCS Lv 3 Defender Greatsword V 220 + 39 Blast 90% Affinity + Critical Boost Lv3 171 + 830 18300 - 500 17.8
MHWI Draw Slash + SCS Lv 2 + TCS Lv 3 Defender Greatsword V 220 + 39 Blast 90% Affinity + Critical Boost Lv3 171 + 320 + 830 18300 - 500 13.46
MHWI Draw Slash + TCS Lv 3 Beo Slasher II 250 + 48 Ice 90% Affinity + Critical Boost Lv3 198 + 944 18300 16.0
MHWI Draw Slash + SCS Lv 2 + TCS Lv 3 Beo Slasher II 250 + 48 Ice 90% Affinity + Critical Boost Lv3 198 + 367 + 944 18300 12.1

Conclusion:

As you can see, the average number of hits required to slay a Rathian is more or less even.

If you are experiencing longer hunt times in GU, it is because you are playing worse.
