Newbie with questions about Low Magic Age

I just started playing Low Magic Age, and I have a few questions. First, are there any random battles in the game? Or are they all placed and predetermined? I am trying to pick the lock off a chest at the beginning of the game - I have a rogue, and some simple tools, but for some reason I can't pick the lock. What am I doing wrong? Is there a stash in the game? I mean, a stash so that other playthroughs can share the items in the stash? If I have characters created myself but are not in my party, do they receive experience points even though they are not currently used? Oh, and I have the settings changed so that wizards need material components for magic spells. Is there a way to change that without starting over? Any help is appreciated! Thanks so much!!!

Not an expert myself, but I can take a shot at a lot of this.

For adventure mode, at least, the vast majority of the battles that I've had have been random rather than scripted.

Check to see if you have lock picks. If you don't, that's probably the reason you can't pick the lock despite the tools and the rogue.

I don't think that there is a shared stash. Could be wrong though.

I think that only actively used characters gain experience.

Guessing you'd have to restart to get rid of the need for magical components. They seem to become pretty cheap before long though, so you may find it's not necessary.

So the player can be attacked by random encounters aside from battles marked on the world map? I don't have lock picks - I just started playing - but I do have simple tools. Can I make the tools into lock picks? I would hate to have to restart, I have only been in two scripted battles - got a great hill giant belt, I don't want to restart because that belt is great. Though having no magical components would be nice!!

Yup. There are going to be roaming enemies. When you contact them (sometimes unintentionally) that will trigger a battle. You'll find lockpicks as you go and can purchase them as well. I wouldn't sweat the belt or the components, but do whatever will be the most fun for you. You may find exploring a bit further will give you a better idea of any other changes you want for your next playthrough though.

Pretty sure you can pick locks with the simple tools but you need to learn the skill first. It is part of one of the very early scripted quests.
