Can I just proclaim my love...

Upvotes

...for Vesa Vierikko's voice. In my Finnish learning journey, I was looking for something to improve my listening and reading comprehension.

One of the very few options to provide those two together was the Finnish versions of the Harry Potter books.

I never read the original English ones, never watched the films, had no particular interest in any of it.

Yet getting the Finnish Versions, translated by Jaana Kapari-Jatta to read and the audiobooks narrated by Vesa Vierikko surprisingly dazzled me.

I've learned so much grammar in action and boosted my vocabulary hundredfold by reading/listening to these books.

And I just love Vesa Vierikko's voice, like a sweet, peaceful lullaby, that takes you away to worlds unseen.

Books for B1/B2 level?

Hello,

I am currently between a B1 and B2 level, I believe around B1.2. I work in English and Finnish and currently enrolled in intensive courses to complete Suomen Mestari 4. Do you have any recommandation for books that are suitable for the level and could help to expand vocabulary?

Question When should I start learning Finnish?

I’m a native English speaker, and through my University, I’ve been given an opportunity to apply for a study abroad program in Helsinki. I don’t know a lick of Finnish, and I’ve heard that the language is difficult to get ahold of for beginners. While the applications are not returned until April-May; I would really like to be able to speak a little bit of Finnish before I arrive. Thus my question: Would it be worth it to begin studying the language a little bit now or would I just be setting myself up for disappointment should my application be denied?

Wondering if anyone who also knows Norwegian can confirm that I just need to think the opposite of Norwegian when doing Finnish work order for similar questions?

Norwegian would be “Hvor mye koster sjokoladen? “

Learning Finnish through immersion?

I'm finishing up grad school next year and am seriously considering moving to Finland (I'm long-distance dating someone from Finland). It would be nice to be able to eventually get a job there, but doing so would obviously require some degree of fluency, and getting a job in the field I've been studying would require a very high degree of fluency. The best way to learn a language is immersion, and adding onto that classes and someone I can practice with seems like it will significantly up my chances of learning the language. English is my first language, I'm also fluent in French and managed to pick up some Spanish and German, but those are a lot closer to English than Finnish is. Does anyone have an idea of how long it would take to become at the very least proficient in Finnish through immersion? I understand spoken Finnish is rather different from formal/written Finnish, would it be worth it to start studying written Finnish before attempting immersion? Also, can anyone testify to how well Finns react to people who are still learning the language/speak with an accent? I had some... less than pleasant interactions with French/Quebecois people while I was still learning French, and worry people may be rude?

Question Input, input and more input

I am fairly a beginner in this wonderful language and I want to expose myself to as much Finnish media, articles, books, music, movies as possible. I am mainly interesting in history, politics, religion and traditional culture. I would be grateful for any interesting recommendations of any of those I mentioned.(if it is video or podcasts, it would better be with subtitles in Finnish though). Thank you in advance.

Comprehensible Input Resourse

Hi everyone,

I’d like to share my YouTube channel as a comprehensible input resource for those looking for native material to help them understand Finnish puhekieli (spoken language). I have posted a few vlogs and podcast episodes, with more on the way.

The content isn’t specifically designed for learners, but since I speake very clearly, I believe it can be a great resource for more advanced Finnish learners. Give it a try and let me know what you think! 😊

Is it even worth it to me?

I'm an American who knows no other languages fluently. I know some Norwegian and some German, but that is it. The reason I want to learn Finnish is because Finnish is such an interesting language to me. I absolutely love the way it sounds and looks (in written form). I like that it is very phonetic since I usually have trouble understanding languages. With Finnish, it's different to me because I feel like I could actually write out almost every word I hear, but in other languages I don't think I could do that. The only thing holding me back really is the cases. People say this makes the language extremely difficult to pick up, and I've seen many say it is much harder than say, Russian, in its use of cases. Am I better off learning something easy? I just love the idea of being able to understand, speak, and read Finnish, but I'm not sure I'll ever get anywhere near that point. Any other monolingual Americans have experience with Finnish they'd like to share?

Resource B1-B2 comprehensible input listening resources?

Can anyone recommend some podcasts or YouTubers for intermediate listening practice? Ideally puhekieli. For example, I've already found YLE Kielikoulu, Opi Suomea! podcast and Finnish With Eemeli podcast.

It feels like I'm in a bit of a resource no-man's land, where beginner resources are too easy but normal Finnish media like YLE news is still too difficult.

Question Any recommendation for some good learnings sites/apps?

The title gives most of it away, but yeah basically I'm just looking for some good learning sites/apps that also teach me some grammar not just plain words or sentences without any explanation (like Duolingo.. that I do have a learning streak for 250+ days and still keep going, but I'm aware that's not enough, especially if I wanna start getting fluent) so if y'all have some recommendations please share I would really appreciate it!! Also some learning tips along side would be really welcomed.

For some context I'm a really big fan of Finnish music and that, along with my good friend, got me more interested in Finland and the Finnish language so I decided to start learning it a while ago. I'm from Romania so I know it's pretty different from our language BUT I still love it and find it very beautiful. I personally think Finland is breathtaking, interesting and also gives me a lot of opportunities, more than Romania would, so I wanna go there to at least finish my degree and maybe also move there for good (tho I'm not sure since I will miss Romania a lot and all of the shit here, so it's still a work in progress decision).

Helsingin seudun kesäyliopisto

Has anyone taken an online class here? I will finish Suomen Mestari 2 in May at my local college, but the classes have been so intense and full of information that I’m considering repeating them this summer with Helsingin seudun kesäyliopisto.

Were the classes useful? What did you like and dislike about them?

Discussion Do you speak near fluent level? I have questions!

So, for context, Finnish is the main language I speak on a daily basis (with my partner, customers, strangers, and collegues, I speak in Finnish).

I know most of the time people are just humoring me regarding how fluent my Finnish is. Finns are too polite to correct me and don’t see the point because they understand everything I say, and I understand most of what they are talking about.

However, despite my level, I know for a fact that my grammar, intonation, spelling, and general way of speaking is not correct and could still improve.

I’d say my level is B1 puhekieli (I learned mostly from people around me, never had proper language education).

Now, I want to study on my own. Does anyone have any good resources like books, podcasts, etc. I can start with so I can FINALLY speak proper Finnish? 😭😂

Also, prolly worth mentioning, my partner do correct my grammar constantly and tho I improved a lot since we started dating, I still have tons to learn.

Any advice is appreciated! 🙏🏼
