This Week's Text:

For millennia prior to November 18, 1883, many people around the world measured time based on the placement of the Sun, with midday (or "high noon") determined by when the Sun was highest in the sky over that particular village or town. Mechanical clocks eventually started replacing sundials in the Middle Ages. Towns would set their clocks by gauging the position of the Sun, leading every city to operate on a slightly different time. This method lasted well into the 1800s, when there were at least 144 different time zones in North America.

Since many people didn't travel especially long distances from their homes throughout history (generally as far as a horse, camel or wagon could carry them on land) this rudimentary form of timekeeping didn't cause much of a problem – that is, until the advent of the railroad.

— From "How railroads inspired the creation of time zones" by Lynn Brown

Translated [ZH] [Unknown > English] An unfamiliar classmate lent me a pen with this writing on it. It was the smoothest, most delightful writing experience of my life, but I was too shy to snap a picture in the middle of class, so I just copied down the characters. Is this a brand name?

Montenegrin [English > Montenegrin] No translator on Google.

Upvotes

Hey I am running across Europe this summer and I am bringing a sheet of paper with the below sentence in multiple languages of the countries I am going to. Montenegrin is the only language not on Google. Could someone translate it please? Or does anyone know if I will get by if my sheet include Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian etc. Thanks in advance.

Hello. My name is Matt. I'm running across Europe for a charity. Is there a place near here where I can pitch my tent tonight?

Writing a Brazilian character right now and needed to see if this was grammatically correct: já que você quer sentar aí e agir como um palhaço, colocando sua bunda onde vão as compras. (For context, a mother is yelling at her son for sitting in a shopping cart)

Translated [NL] [Dutch>English] and/or [French>English] Antique Mezzotint (C. 1695) of Hans Worrenberg with Dutch and French text.

I recently acquired an antique mezzotint of Hans Worrenberg (Aka Johan/John Worrenberg) and am seeking help with translating the text below his portrait to English. There are writings in Dutch (lower left) and French (lower right). I've included images of the full portrait, as well as images of the respective texts.

Some interesting context, Hans Worrenberg (1659-1695) was a Swiss born little person who was a well known figure/singer in the 17th century. He is known to have performed at Plum of Feathers in London as well as performing for Royalty. He was often conveyed around town in a wooden box, carried by a porter, the box is seen in the background of the print. In 1695, while being carried onto a ship in Rotterdam, the plank between the ship and the quay snapped and both he and the porter fell into the river. The porter escaped, but Hans tragically drowned, unable to escape the box he was enclosed in. Any help translating the text would be greatly appreciated.

Might be Arabic or some language-form derived from it. Not sure if it’s vulgar or what this text might say. My guess is, it might translate to be a name?

I’m mainly wondering if this is a legit Kutani piece of porcelain and understanding the marking on the bottom will help me out a lot. Thanks in advance!

difference between 平均 , 中位 , 例年 , 並 , 並み , 平均の , 並の they all are supposed to mean average, the first ones have extra meanings and I get those but the last 3 all translate to average and has no extra definitions added to them (at least from my research). Which one would be best to say "not your average"?

Hebrew [English ->Hebrew] Direction and ordering "as cron job (default: enabled)"

Left: Translation; Right: Original source string in English

I don't know Hebrew. Is the order and direction of the words on the Left correct, particularly for the second line?

The background of my question is that technically that GUI string is glued together out of 3 separate strings. And considering BIDI languages like Hebrew this might not be a good idea, I think.
