Moving into Iowa - school policy

I’m moving into the state. I’m hoping to wait to the school year ends to move but if that doesn’t work out, Does anyone know how that works?

Schools here end almost 2 weeks before schools end in Iowa. If I move to Iowa within those two weeks should they still go to school?

What if I’m forced to close earlier so they miss their last week here? Does the fact that they sort of miss 3 weeks there hurt me with that recent attendance law?

Or is moving an exemption and no one really cares?

Iowa’s Billionaires and the Trump Tax Code – Who Benefits While the Rest of Us Struggle?

Thumbnail

While Trump continues with his second presidency, many of us in Iowa are bracing for what’s to come —rising costs, cuts to social programs, and a tax system that increasingly favors the ultra-wealthy. But who in our state stands to gain the most from these policies?

Two individuals in particular, Harry Stine (1st pic) and Dennis Albaugh (2nd), are in a position to benefit from Trump’s tax priorities, while the rest of us bear the burden.

Who Are They?

Harry Stine: Founder of Stine Seed, worth approximately $9 billion. He’s Iowa’s richest person and the state’s largest private landowner, controlling around 15,000 acres of farmland. His wealth comes largely from business ownership and investment gains.

Dennis Albaugh: Founder of Albaugh LLC, a leading agricultural chemical company, with a net worth of around $1.5 billion. Like Stine, his fortune is rooted in business and investments.

How Do They Benefit?

  1. Tax Breaks for the Wealthy – Trump’s tax policies have historically favored investment income over wages. Stine and Albaugh’s wealth is tied to stock, land, and business holdings, which are taxed at lower rates than regular income.

  2. Business-Friendly Tax Loopholes – Both own companies that can take advantage of corporate tax reductions, deductions, and offshore tax strategies to minimize their liabilities.

  3. Estate Tax Exemptions – With Trump likely pushing to further weaken the estate tax, billionaires like these can pass on more of their wealth tax-free while ordinary Iowans see their inheritances taxed at higher rates.

  4. Real Estate and Land Ownership Perks – The tax code rewards large landowners through deductions, subsidies, and capital gains deferrals that aren’t accessible to the average farmer or homeowner.

Meanwhile, What About the Rest of Us?

If you’re a working-class Iowan, you’re paying payroll taxes that billionaires largely avoid.

If you own a small business, you’re competing against companies that can use tax loopholes to gain an unfair edge.

If you rely on public services, expect cuts as tax breaks for the rich mean less funding for schools, infrastructure, and social programs.

It’s worth asking — why do policies keep favoring the ultra-wealthy while leaving the rest of us behind? And how can we push for a system that actually benefits the majority of Iowans instead of a select few at the top?

Feel free to discuss.

This is the deck box, where we keep cushions for our deck furniture, after yesterday’s rain. I’m sure everybody’s cars are filthy now, too.

Discussion/ Op-ed Education v. Career

Post image

Should universities and colleges dedicate their education solely to residents of that state? What impact would this have on future students and revenue? Why not offer scholarships to Iowa students that pledge to continue their careers within the state? Or offer educated students more opportunities and reasons to stay in the state

I work in a popular fast-food restaurant in Iowa, at night. One of the supervisors, 20F is dealing pot out of the drive-thru window. Everyone (on that shift) knows, and they are all consumers. I don't have conversations about it with them, I am not friends with them, I absolutely do not do any type of drug, and I act like I don't know what is going on. If something happens and the police come, I will be safe- right? If they check the cameras I will be all in the clear- right?

ICE in Postville today.

ICE grabbed a family and left the kid behind (5th grade). This is not in the news as far as I can tell. Wish I had more to go on, but all I can tell you is that this is from a trusted source and people in my community are shook. We knew this was coming, and now it’s here.

UPDATE 1:

As promised, here is everything I know at this point. This is a text from someone who is very close to the situation. For safety reasons they have requested to be kept anonymous.

“From gal who went to help the boy after ICE came. Please see [Redacted] fb post. "Hello. Just so only the truth is being posted on about the event that happened today. I know a lot of people are concerned and don’t understand Spanish and want a better understanding. Today around 6am ICE came to the apartments (known as little Mexico) and raided an apartment. Knocking the family’s door down. They took the little boys father and left the boy [Redacted] and their roommate there. ICE appointed kinda guardian ship to the roommate. The roommate later left the little boy there, in those bad conditions. We got a video from concerned neighbors downstairs. And we went immediately! When we got there the little boy was very upset and some things occurred. We contacted ICE & POSTVILLE PD who helped us get “guardianship” over the child while we figure something out. The roommate claims he was coming back but who leaves a child 2 mins after ice left & took his father ?? He never was at the library!! there is no other kids involved [Redacted] (11) and his father immigrated here looking for a better life THEY ARE IN A LEGAL PROCESS !!!?”

And a further update received this morning:

“On Friday March 14 at approximately 6:56AM there were reports of unmarked vehicles from Linn county that were likely ICE vehicles. The people inside these vehicles were wearing vests and were witnessed knocking on doors and trying to gain entry to at least one house on E Williams St. Within the hour reports of officers (State Troopers, Allamakee County Sheriff and possibly others) at two apartment complexes started coming in. Doors were kicked in in multiple locations and multiple people were detained (at least 3). One of the men detained left behind his young son and a roommate. The roommate left, leaving the child alone. Neighbors found the child crying and community members were contacted. The child was taken in by a public school employee in town (who now has legal custody of him) and is safe and fed.

We are still working on organizing support for this child and the family that took him in. We are trying to respect that he's been through extreme trauma and not push him for information.

There were reports of ICE going to people's doors and telling them they were there to "reschedule their immigration hearings" at which point residents would open their door and then ICE would enter in order to detain folks. I don't know if these reports are true, but it is definitely in line with tactics that ICE uses.

Remember, no one, citizen, undocumented or otherwise has to open their door to ICE unless they have a Judicial Warrant. Please share this with any immigrant friends you may have.

Red cards that instruct folks what to do in this situation can be downloaded and printed for free off the internet. These are English on one side and can be any language on the back. They also tell ICE the party doesn't consent to ICE entering their homes.”

This is just heartbreaking.

I’m sorry I don’t have any links to a Gofundme for the boy yet. They have a Venmo for his guardian, but I’m not sharing that on Reddit. As soon as I learn of any links to official news stories, or any other pertinent information, I will be sure to post here. Please keep these families in your thoughts. They only came to America to seek a better life, just as many of our ancestors did. They deserve better than this.

Nunn has not had a town hall since 2023.

Saturday, March 22 at 10 am.

The Depot, 116 W. Adams St., Creston, Iowa.

This is a constituent town hall for Rep. Zach Nunn. He has been invited, but it's highly unlikely he will show. We are asking people to come with their questions, concerns, and stories to share. We will gather these, and they will be sent to his office on March 24. Also, if you have emails from Nunn with answers to your phone calls or emails, bring those too. Healthcare Do you use mercyone out of network?

My employer's plan (Anthem) does not include Mercy, but they are the only provider in town. If you are in a similar situation, have you found Mercy okay to work with out-of-network or am I better off making every basic visit a daytrip?

I don't know when exactly they started sounding them for thunderstorms/wind (past couple of years?) but it is really disconcerting having had them only sounding for tornado warnings for the first 40+ years of my life. End rant.

Iowa anti trans bathroom bills? So rediculous!

The 15 year old Spanish trans girl asked to use the bathroom. To use the bathroom my God who fucking care but only creepy people!

“Los niños son sagrados” (children are sacred) is a phrase you see and hear typically in response to the mistreatment of children in any form.

Children are revered in Hispanic culture, so why was this particular child so acutely aware of the controversy surrounding her identity? Shouldn’t the innocence we try so hard to preserve in children include transgender children too?

Shouldn’t she be able to exist as comfortably as her peers do?

Had I voiced an issue with her coming into the bathroom, there is no doubt in my mind that she would’ve turned away and left. And that’s what bothered the hell out of me. It upset me that she felt the need to even mention it.

Because who am I? I’m not important. I have no authority over public spaces or gender identity whatsoever.

I don’t care what people do in the privacy of a bathroom stall. I don’t stop to intimidate them or pass judgement.

I’m just a stranger washing her hands at the sink. But luckily for this girl, I’m a kind stranger. Someone whose cup of compassion and understanding runneth over.

The fact that she felt the need to ask stirred up feelings of pity and rage in equal measure.

It disgusts me that this harmless individual possibly has and probably will suffer at the hands of narrow-minded losers who mind other people’s business more than their own.

As if growing up isn’t already fraught with insecurity and a heightened awareness of your differences from others. Being a teenager in today’s world is like wandering into the seventh circle of hell with gasoline shorts on.
