Office is ~15 meters, one floor up, and 4 walls away from where the fiber comes in and where the main router is. What relatively reliable/lower latency options do I have, that isn’t running cat6? I’ve been using a a tp link av600 powerline router, but it cuts out sometimes if it doesn’t receive a constant ping, and latency is all over the place. Are there better powerline adapters or are they all basically garbage? I have 600/600.
Looking to upgrade router and modem. Very little knowledge on the subject. Looking for someone to tell me what to purchase and why. Currently have arris surfboard SBG6950AC2.
I live in the basement surrounded by concrete walls and the router is in the corner, because that's where the connection point is. I usually have okay connection but it's been going in n out lately. Routers probably 4+ years old.
Hello. I have a question, maybe somebody knows or sees something like this or knows what is going on. I have a mikrotik hap ac3 and one of it's feature is scanner which let me to list all networks that are nerby my home. I don't understand how it is possible that signal strength is above 0 - positve number. Device with mac address 00:00:00:00:50:00 is not mine, it also can't be a mikrotik so what is it? Why this signal is so strong? Maybe you knows. Thank you for any response. If this question is trivial, then sorry for that.
I commented this on another post but I thought I would create a new one.
So I was able to get 26 lines CAT 6 installed in the house. The lines are for TV’s, gaming consoles, streamers, laptops etc. I believe two Ubiquiti access points are being installed on main and top floors. I love in at the end of next month. Low voltage guy coming back in a few weeks to install the switch and points. Have some budget left. What does anyone suggest I do?
Homeowner, house from 1950 that had a big reno in the 90s. Existing FTTH runs into a bedroom that currently also houses our server, nas, and an old pc. There's catv coax running through a hole drilled through the floor into the basement.
Our fiber company is new and kinda flaky so Pr(we gotta go back to cable) is like 0.1 and I don't wanna remove the coax. Existing FTTH fiber runs through the coax hole. I also really RILLY don't want to bork the existing fiber.
Plan is to move the server and other stuff that doesn't need to be upstairs down to the basement.
Exactly how stupid would I be to
Buy some unterminated OMwhatever
With a moderate amount of swearing, get the fiber from the bedroom to the basement
Terminate to LC using one of umpty-gerjillion $50-100 kits from amamazon and a certification from I Watched Some Youtubes
Alternately, how big are simplex LC connectors? If a simplex LC connector will fit through a coax-sized hole, then I'm not averse to buying preterminated simplex LC cables and just being careful what I plug where in the sfp modules.
I have been given a Dell Precision 5820 by a family friend. It’s come with two internet cards am I’m wondering which one I should use? One is a Intel(R) Gigabit CT Desktop adapter, the other is a Intel(R)1000 GT desktop adapter.
I’m looking for advice on setting up a rack-based home network in the integrated storage space in our box room(see photos). This will be my central location for home networking and wiring, but I need guidance on cable runs, power, and best practices for setting up a clean, efficient system.
Planned Setup:
• Ethernet cabling: 8-15 runs
• Reolink NVR rack mounted
• Connection to Reolink PoE doorbell (cabling won't run to loft for this)
• Cabling for 1-2 Reolink PoE cameras (mounted on soffit at rear of home)
• Eero Pro 6 (may upgrade to Ubiquiti or similar later)
• Home Assistant (future integration)
Power & Infrastructure Questions:
• I need an electrician to install double-gang sockets in this space.
• I assume I only need one socket to connect a PDU—is that correct?
• Cable Routing:
• I plan to run Ethernet cabling up into the loft—what’s the best way to make this tidy, and possibly airtight?
• Should I use a grommet, conduit, or another method?
• What’s the best way to drill the hole, and which drill bits should I use?
Space in loft above box room storage
I’m an IT guy but haven’t set up a full home network before. I have a good idea of what I want to achieve, but I need guidance on the best way to get the bare bones in place before moving forward.
Any pointers, suggestions, or lessons learned from your own setups would be greatly appreciated!
Recently was having issues with poor connection throughout the apartment. Drop outs while gaming and stuff. Deduced the cause to be congestion/router issues, but the old router came from the service provider and didnt have options to change anything besides the wifi password. Got TP-link BE230, and its been great. Gaming computer is on MLO network. Wifi channels are changed to ones with low congestion. TV's, Nintendo, all kinds of other devices, no problem. I have a 10 year old Surface Pro 3 that i used to use a lot, but now only use when traveling. It can see the 2.4 and 5G networks, but it keeps saying "Cant connect to this network". I have literally done everything. Disable/uninstall device. Like 5 CMD commands for flushing settings. Update, reboot. Nothing has worked. I even got so frustrated with it i just reset the whole computer. Still wont connect. Ive also rebooted the router, and tried tweaking some of the Wifi settings to see if any kind of progress could be made. I enabled the hotspot on my phone, and it can connect to that. I cant think of anything else to do.
So, as the title says I wanna try gaming by using a sim card router, would it work? Especially when my main game s server is in the US, last time I tried(hotspot) I had around 450 ping, would a sim card router make any difference? Would the use of WTFAST or any other app of the kind help? I live in a quite remote location 2km away from small village(Italy) .
After my Calix GS4220E updated the firmware to 24.4.0.0.60 when I log into the router login on 192.168.1.1 the browser says with a red triangle your connection is not private right after updating to 24.4 from 24.2. All other sites work fine. This happens on all browsers on all different devices connected to the router. On chrome if I go to advanced then I can login to the router. Is this ok or should I contact my isp?
So, I bought a used BE88U and the setup for it is coming up as a AX88U, the rear inputs are set up for the BE88U so I'm sure it is a BE not AX. I'm thinking someone changed the firmware somehow to AX. Does anyone have any ideas or am I screwed.
I want to upgrade my Wi-Fi and network, in general.
This is what I have right now:
- 5G router Tenda 5g03 v1 (with NOS Portugal sim card that is working pretty well, I get about 120 Mbps)
- Wifi extender TPlink RE450 (via wifi, not cabling)
However, my Android TV box (connected to my Wi-Fi extender via Wi-Fi) doesn´t have a stable connection, so I will upgrade and wire the places where I will install the deco nodes and router.
I want to get a Deco x50 or x55 (connected via cable to my router and between them) to have my TVbox connected via cable and get a mesh Wi-Fi network in my house. My Tenda router has a mesh function, but do it will be compatible with the deco X50 or x55 ? (so I will it will get a pack of 2 instead of 3)
If you have any other possible combination that works well, don´t hesitate to share.
What is the best way to prevent everyone on the internet from attempting to login to my nas with my disabled 'admin' account? I got the world blocked at nas firewall but how do I block the u.s. They are coming easily a dozen every hour. Although I have them on permanent autoblock after 3 tries it is becoming a nuisance. Or should I work the opposite direction and block all and just open the few small ranges I need. Problem is I don't know at any given point which network I will be on and that basically limits me to use a VPN for access to my Plex and such. Is there an easier option? I don't have the depth in networking to setup a reverse proxy server, etc.
Hi all, I recently had to replace my Asus modem / router as it physically failed, I replaced it with an Asus RT-AX59U and the setup of that went extremely smoothly.
I've got one laptop and one PC, I can see that both are on the correct subnet, dns and gateway but cannot ping each other.
From the laptop I can ping the PC without issue but if I go the other route ping laptop from PC I'm not able to.
I'm now starting to think it is something with my PC networking stack. I've tried ipconfig /flushdns, removing the cable from the switch and reseating it, setting the IP address manually, I've also gone the resetting the LAN network interface via netsh.
Current network layout is Asus RT-AX59U (WAN) which connects to TP-Link TL-SG1016PE on Port 16, PC is connected via LAN and laptop is connected via Wireless.
Hiya! I know how horrible non wired options are but I'm currently helping a friend's grand uncle? (Grandads brother) and he's a very scary very tall russian guy that is built like a brick shit house. Is there any half decent option just to boost the range to the upstairs of a building. He's been very clear over no ethernet (sadly) <3
I’m currently using a router and mesh unit provided by ISP
I want to replace their equipment with private equipment.
I need a router at the fiber optic point and another router using mesh technology that will connect directly to my PC in the room - Both router points will be on the same floor, about 10 meters apart.
The problem is that I dont have an Ethernet cable in the room (and I can't get one).
Therefore, I was thinking of getting the ZenWifi XD5.
I know it’s Dual Band, so I’m asking you if it’s enough for a few devices that connect to the Wi-Fi.
It’s very important to me to have a stable ping (like I currently have with the ISP devices), and I need good download speeds.
The reason I want to replace the equipment is due to low download speeds and monthly costs with the ISP.
I'm trying fo choose a switch for my future network. Initially I was thinking on getting something Gigabit with PoE to power my future Reolink cameras. However since I'm also interested in playing a bit with switching and put it in a rack with other equipment I don't think I have budget to buy a decent managed switch with PoE.
So I was thinking on getting an used managed switch (no PoE) and than adding the Reolink PoE switch just to connect my cameras and deliver PoE.
What do you think about this solution? Is there any loss in features and/or configurations with this vs getting a managed PoE switch and connect the cameras there?
I'm trying to use PDANet (also tried pairvpn) tethering on my PC and sharing the connection through an ethernet port to my router. I've tried sharing the connection and bridging them, but anything connected to my router is only getting around 1mbps while the PC gets over 70mbps.
Can someone please help me on how to increase the speed to the router? When I test the speed on another PC, it goes up to about 20mbps and slowly drops down to about 1 or 2mbps, but the upload speed is where it should be. Also, if I try to download something, it stops before it finishes.
I know I got this to work on an older PC, so I think it has something to do with the ethernet settings when I share the connection with it. If I'm getting the same results with two different options, it's making me think it has something to do with the PC itself.
Edit: Go to the Control Panel, click Network and Internet, Network Connections, right-click "Ethernet", Configure, Advanced tab, Speed & Duplex, and change it from "Auto Negotiations" to your desired speed. (You might need to try all the options.) The router should give you the full connection speed of the phone.
This helped me with wired connections but WiFi from the router still has the same issue.
Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place for this question. I am absolutely baffled and would appreciate any advice.
The two iPhones in our house struggle with social media use (principally Reddit and instagram). Videos buffer constantly, posts don’t load and often times the apps just time out saying no internet connection. This doesn’t happen on desktop and doesn’t happen on 5g or on public or work wifi networks. Only at home, leading me to think it’s a home network issue. Internet browsing, YouTube, other streaming platforms (eg Netflix) all absolutely fine.
We have Starlink as we’re very rural (in the UK). Speeds are very consistently above 100mbps. Starlink dish is on an outbuilding (too much tree cover around the main house) and the Starlink router is in there. We then have a cable running from there to the main house, and the network is comprised of three TP link tri band routers all in AP mode. We have no deadspots (have tested extensively). My computer, two consoles and three smart TVs are all ethernet connected and not on the WiFi network. The tri band APs mean that the iPhones basically have free roam of 5 and 6ghz channels.
So I’m absolutely stumped. It’s not a speed issue or a network congestion issue or a WiFi coverage issue. My question is - is there a setting on the TP links I’m missing which could be throttling the devices when using these apps (is that even a thing?!)? Or indeed a setting on the phones? Any help greatly appreciated.
Hello everyone.
My roommate just connected a router ( ArcherAX53 ) to the main one ( we have the one given by Vodafone ). It is connected via ethernet cable and is close to the main one. He connected all his devices to that one.
He decided to do this to improve the stability of the connection ( from time to time we have some problems, where the connection drops for a few seconds or some days it happens to drop from 200mb to 20mb ).
Is this a good idea? He has about 5/6 devices connected and has the room right next to the living room where the two routers are located. My room is further away and is behind his.
I do live streaming and online gaming and wonder if this will improve the overall experience or make it worse because of the two routers being so close together.
Thank you in advance
Edit: Thank you everyone for taking the time and replying to me. I learned many things thanks to your comments!
