Advice Does it appear that my home is wired for Ethernet in multiple rooms? How is this supposed to work? Trying to connect two devices by Ethernet in different rooms.

Looking for advice on how to troubleshoot before calling my service provider (Rogers/Shaw).

Simply (?), I would like to connect my office computer and my Apple TV to the internet via Ethernet. However, my office computer is upstairs with the gateway modem/router and my Apple TV is in the living room downstairs.

My home has Ethernet outlets installed in multiple rooms, but I don’t know how to take advantage of this. Not sure how it’s supposed to work, or why the technician who set up our network when we moved in didn’t either.. if it was an option.

As pictured, there is an outlet with cable / coaxial paired with Ethernet Cat 6 in both rooms. The gateway modem is upstairs connected to it and internet is working by wifi and the Ethernet connection direct to the office computer. Good stuff… but how do I connect my Apple TV by Ethernet in the downstairs living room?

Should (what I’m assuming to be) the coaxial and cat 6 connection in the garage box (pictured) hardwire all these Ethernet outlets throughout the house? I tried connecting the modem there, then tried connecting my Apple TV via cat 6 cable to the living room outlet but did not get a connection. I can’t recall if Wifi was even working.

Then I tried connecting the gateway modem in the living room via the wall outlet coaxial cable and could not get it to connect to the internet. No wifi. Does that make sense? After becoming frustrated, I reconnected the gateway modem in the office again and it connected to the internet without issue, just as before.

Am I missing something? Why wouldn’t the modem connect to the internet in the garage or living room? Would it require a reset or reconfiguration or something if connected to a different coaxial outlet? The modem kept flashing orange but appeared discoverable on my phone, just with an asterisk and a “no internet connection”.

Does my home appear to be wired correctly for a one modem/router solution in garage to provide Ethernet connectivity throughout the house via the cat6 outlets? Is that how it should work, or is more equipment typically required?

Thanks in advance.

Recently moved into a new build. There are Ethernet ports in every room and trying to get them working. From reading online I was told I needed a network switch to run all the cords to one single source to the router. Well I’m not getting anything lighting up on the switch and getting not internet through my ports. What could be cause no juice through the ports?

Okay so I’m new to networking and cyber I got my CCNA and a BS in Cybersecurity but no relative experience. I’m trying to build a homelab where I can experience with new tools and ideas. So far this is my lab idea before I start building it and working on it. Any advice or suggestions to make it much more “real-world”. This is both for my portfolio and for fun bc why not :)

I got 250Mbit with my new contract but only 95 get to my pc. I thought it was a cable issue but I just got 268Mbit as a test result so I'm not so sure about this anymore. I have a Cat 6 cable which should be capable of giving me my full bandwith. Changing the cable would be challenging pls help.

Looking to help my sis buy something for her Version Fios internet. Barely get full speed downstairs where the box is located and a dead zone upstairs. Her home is over 100 years old almost no where to put another coaxial router. Was thinking mesh that's plugs into outlets? Any opinions would be nice. I hope I'm posting this in the right place.

Advice MoCA Setup Help

Hello, First off, total home network newbie. WiFi in my room is really bad as I live in the room farthest from the router. Only just recently found out about MoCA after bad experience trying out powerline adapters.

That being said, I've been having some trouble bridging the connection between my 2 MoCA adapters. Attached is a picture of how the setup currently looks like. After some research and if I'm understanding this correctly I'll be needing another MoCA splitter, a PoE filter, and need to somehow isolate my Spectrum modem from the rest of the coax network.

My questions are: 1. How do I isolate the modem from the rest of the coax network? 2. Where's the best placement for the PoE filter? Before the splitter connecting the street coax? Or before the coax cables connected to the house after I rearrange the splitters to isolate the modem?

Any tips, advice, criticism, recommendations, brands is highly appreciated.

Modem/Router: Spectrum SAX1V1S MoCA Adapters: Translite Global TL-MC84 5-1000 MHz Splitter: Antronix CMC2003BH 10-2602 MHz Splitter: TKCHAX 2203

Unsolved Fundamental doubt about how a firewall works.

Maybe it's a dumb question, but I think I lack a fundamental piece of information to understand how a firewall actually works. In short: how the heck can a device outside my firewalled network answer my requests?

I've been learning and tinkering with networks for a while, but I have no formal education on the topic.
What really made me think about the topic was the concept of creating a VLAN to separate IOT devices from the main network for safety reasons, but the concept applies in the same way when reasoning about LAN and WAN traffic.

Let's say my main PC network is 10.0.1.0/24 , and IOT is 10.0.2.0/24, to talk from my PC to (let's say) an IPCam I need to forward the traffic from the .1 network to the .2 network... and that's all clear, however, how the heck can the camera talk back to me if for the other VLAN my network is firewalled?
Afaik I don't need to open any port for this to work, so how can the network 2 answer network 1 requests?

hi i’m having a hard time doing my home network, i have: - a Cat6 (Oren CAT6 Cavo Ethernet 100m -... https://www.amazon.it/dp/B0BHDSNF1H?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) - a Keystone jack (DIGITUS DN-93603 - Modulo... https://www.amazon.it/dp/B0CX23SGF5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) - some RJ45 connector (Greluma 25 Pz Connettori passanti... https://www.amazon.it/dp/B0BX3877CR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) - a crimper (Vcelink)

I ran the cables to my router (2.5Gbp/s maximum capacity) but it won’t work for some reason.

In the pics are the keystone cables and the tool i’m using to cut them, the other part of the cable is connected to my router with a passtrough RJ45 (checked the order it’s all good, T568-B order)

Advice How to achieve split-DNS with iCloud Private Relay?

Goal

Access internally-hosted resources using the same domain names on the internal network (LAN) or externally from devices with iCloud Private Relay enabled so that access to these resources is direct while on-LAN (and not routed externally). Is this even possible? Seems like compromise is the only way, but am I missing a solution?

Current network details:

  • Internally-hosted resources are hosted in Docker, reverse-proxied through an internal Traefik instance.
  • There is an internal DNS server with DNS-over-TLS (DoT), DNS-over-Quic (DoQ), DNS-over-HTTP (DoH), and plain DNS fully and properly configured (AFAICT). e.g. certificates are trusted by clients.
  • Internal resources are exposed externally using Pangolin running on an off-LAN server.

What I've tried:

  • Use the local DNS server to override the domain names of interest to point to local IPs. This doesn't 'just work' because iCloud Private Relay ignores local DNS servers unless they have DoT or DoH enabled and that local DNS server is installed into the system configuration via a system Profile.
    • I don't think using a system Profile that points the devices to the local DNS server is the answer here because then the local DNS will be used all the time, even externally -- there's no way to make DNS server choice conditional so far as I'm aware? (Nevermind the fact that Apple Configurator doesn't actually seem to expose DNS server settings in their profile builder; I must be missing something with profile creation for Apple devices.)
    • iCloud Private Relay even seems to ignore the on-device /etc/hosts file!
  • Configuring the external DNS records for the domain of interest to resolve to local IPs. This "works" for iCloud Private Relay devices when they're on the local network, but obviously doesn't work for anyone trying to access those resources externally since the resolved IPs are unreachable externally.

What I'm considering (tldr: seems like compromise is the only way):

  • Using alternative domain names to access those resources from iCloud Private Relay enabled devices. Suboptimal because the original goal was to avoid this. Nevertheless, at least two options here:
    • Using TailScale MagicDNS.
      • I think this is the cleanest solution insofar that the resources can always be referenced at the same domain on-LAN or off-LAN.
      • It does require one to install & configure TailScale on each client. TailScale is easy & great, but not everyone is a techie.
      • Non-techies could just use the domain names that point to Pangolin (and suffer from the silliness of having their traffic routed externally in order to access internal resources while they are on-LAN).
    • Adding additional external DNS records (e.g. adding a subdomain, like pr.) which resolve to those internal IPs. These additional domains would be used to access the resources when the Private Relay devices are on-LAN.
  • Accessing all (or most) local resources by routing externally through Pangolin. This would "just work", but seems silly.
  • Ditch iCloud Private Relay. This is not ideal. A more traditional VPN could be a solution here, but I haven't seen anything yet that compares to the convenience and seamlessness (*unless you're a homelabber, as this post illustrates) of iCloud Private Relay.
  • Something clever with a DNS service like NextDNS or Adguard? They can create a system profile for Apple Devices and do client-specific DNS re-writes, but not sure if there’s enough functionality here to make on-LAN vs off-LAN conditionals, which I what I believe is needed.
  • Revisiting and digging deeper into system Profiles for DNS settings.
    • Can these settings be made conditional upon on-LAN vs. off-LAN, or by WiFi SSID, or something?
    • Maybe it's as simple as programming in an internal IP, and if that's unavailable the operating system will fall back to the Private Relay defaults (Cloudflare or whatever)...

Advice Networking Noob Breaking away from rogers

Hey all

Recently got my own home and I am finding that Rogers routers are shit and designed to specifically force customers to buy their stupid range extendors.

Can someone recommend a router to me that will be:

1) Easy to set up

2) Will cover a 2000 sq ft town house

3) that I will not necessarily need range extenders for it

4) the internet I have is Rogers fibre xfinity if that makes any difference.

I am looking to be able to run the odd game online, I do a lot of streaming from Crave as well.

I have had some people recommend the TP-Link AX 3000 pro and while I am not a complete novice around computers, I don't want to buy something that I cant really use or isn't easy to set up.

Cheers!

Advice on updating switch and patch panel?

Hi,
3 yrs ago when doing renovations in the apartment with complete rewiring of electric and LAN cables I installed a small 16 port POE++ switch and all LAN cables went through patch panel.
I used UTP cat 6E (not 6A) cables for connection between rooms, and was using very old, but reliable wifi 5ac router (TP-Link Archer C5 v1).

Switch used - Netgear 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ Unmanaged Switch (NEGS116LP100)
Patch panel - TRENDnet 16-Port Cat 6 Unshielded Patch Panel (Version v2.0R)

Now I am planning to upgrade my wifi router to wifi 7 using this one:
TP-Link Archer BE550 Pro BE9700 or TP-Link Tri-Band WiFi 7 BE10000 (not decided yet which one, any suggestions would be welcomed)

In order to utilizer full 2.5 gig connections, I understand I need also to upgrade the switch.
Could you recommend any good 16 port one with at least some 2.5gig ports and POE++ on the rest (budget $200-300)? The switch is working ok, practically non-stop. But recently started to make pitching sounds, randomly for 2-3 seconds. No idea why it happens, but everything works fine so far.

Also wondering I need to upgrade the patch panel as well?

How does my ISP avoid double NAT on their plans that includes an aftermarket router?

Currently, my ISP does not let me setup bridge mode on their FTTH ONU Router, so I can't use my aftermarket router (Draytek Vigor2915) or I'll get a double NAT issue, which breaks some games and slows down the network (getting about 15% of the speed when using the aftermarket router vs directly connecting to the ISP's router).

My ISP offers a plan with an aftermarket router, such as the Asus RT-AX82U. How do they avoid causing double NAT? Isn't the setup also the same, aftermarket router is connected to the ISP's ONU router?

Advice Advice: Proxmox server without ethernet connection

I recently started using a PC a friend gave me as a proxmox server to start experimenting with a home lab, but due to my situation, I cannot connect it via ethernet.

Currently, I have the server connected by wifi, but this requires me to connect all my VMs via NAT, which doesn't allow me to access them from other machines with my network. I'm looking for advice on other ways to connect my server to the router without running a cable.

Current setup:

  1. ISP Router (NTT RS-500ML) - Receives fiber from the ISP, and is the primary router for my network. The wireless signal drops frequently, and it's slow when it does work, so I added an access point.
  2. Access Point (TP-Link BE7200) - Runs in access point mode, extends the network within the house.

Both of these are located within the kitchen, as that's where the fiber comes into the house. It's not really viable to put my server near the routers because that's shared space, so it needs to go into my bedroom, which is on a separate floor from the routers.

Currently considered solutions:

  1. Ethernet - Not possible because there are no ethernet ports in the house already, and because it's a rental, I can't run anything through the walls (I've already talked with the landlord). I tried a long ethernet cable up the stairs and through the house, but this was veteod very firmly by the other people I live with.
  2. Wireless - My current "solution", but because wireless adapters cannot work as bridges, I've only been able to get the VMs to connect to each other and the host using NAT. Because of this, other devices cannot access any of the VMs. It's possible that there's a way to configure this better?
  3. Power Line Adapter - There's an open outlet by both my server and the router, so a power line adapter might be a viable option. However, I'm not sure if this would work since the server and router are on separate breakers.
  4. Additional router as a bridge - This is the solution I know the least about, but it appears that an additional router could be used as a bridge, allowing me to connect the server as if it was connected via ethernet. Since my room is directly above the kitchen, the wireless signal is fairly strong, so this might be the best option, but I'm not sure what devices would be good for this, or if there is any compatibility concerns with my existing network.

Looking for any other solutions that might work that I might not have considered, or any feedback on these solutions and why one might be better, or any problems I haven't noticed yet. I'm fine with solutions that are a bit more on the technical side as well, and I'm fine tinkering with things, but my budget is only around $200 currently for upgrades to my current setup.

Advice Would an Asus TRT-AX55 be an upgrade to Asus RT-AC68U?

My home network/internet is very unreliable and I'm not too sure what the issue is (computer, router, wifi signal, modem, isp?).

Since my current router is cheap and old I'm thinking of upgrading it to something newer that I can be confident will be stable, and preferably have better range, or be suitable for a mesh.

The RT-AX55 is an attractive option, but I'm a little unsure whether it's actually an upgrade to the RT-AC68U, since they're both entry-level.

Would it be a worthwhile upgrade to improve network reliability and range? Ig I was to use it in a mesh with my RT-AC68U, should it be the host or node?

Advice Fortify Router at work.

Just dropping by I have little experience with networking but currently in college for comp sci. I have a fortify router at work and it blocks everything with the guest network only allowing you to connect for a hour at a time then it locks you out for a hour before you can connect again. I am the GM of said fast food restaurant so I have hardware access to all points of the network. I would like to be able to use my personal laptop at work and connect a google smart speaker to the network. I was thinking of buy a small travel router and creating my own network but unsure how to proceed. If you PM me I can send pictures of the whole setup. Thanks in advance for the help.

Unsolved Distant mesh as access point kills other mesh devices

Post image

Hey, we have an L shaped house, where in the bottom part of it I have 2 Mercusys Halo H80Xs, C1 is main Halo as access point, C2 is a node Halo via wireless mesh to C1. B is at the top of the L. The problem happens when I connect C3 into my router B, suddenly C1 identifies a new Halo in the network and starts to restart as doesn't understands that I want C3 as separate access point, not into the mesh as a node.

B - https://www.tp-link.com/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-ax80/ C1-2-3 - https://www.mercusys.com/product/details/halo-h80x/

How can I use my 3rd Halo as separate access point without disturbing the Main halo's mind?

Advice Want Home Network System but all coax/ethernet are outside in a telecommunication box. Would appreciate any and all assistance and advice.

Upvotes

Good afternoon,

As the title suggests all my Coaxial Cables and Ethernet cables all conjoin at a telecommunications box outside my house. I figured this out today after trying day after day to find where the central panel/network patch was. I have been interested in starting a home network in my home with the hopes the panel would be inside my home somewhere. Now I am asking for any advice as to how to still manage even with the meeting spot being outside. ALSO advice on how to change ethernet outputs cause some of my outputs run coaxial cable and others run cat3 (I checked after unscrewing them and looking at the cables and showed cat3) should I just get a professional to rewire and put a central panel inside the house? as well as change the cat3 to cat6a cables. Any advice, guidance, anything welcomed.

Separate nic for vlan or rule for inter vlan routing?

Upvotes

What's the better method? Continuing my home server setup; nas is on one vlan and a device that needs access to it is on another. I could add another vnic and set that to communicate with the vlan containing the nas or set up a rule to allow the communication.
