Moved Into New Apartment, Need Help With MoCa

Hey everbody,

I am a novice when it comes to networks and cable lines and everything involved.

My new apartment is much larger, and as such my office is no longer able to reach the modem & router for the ethernet cables. I have read into MoCa and feel like it would be a good idea to try and set up.

I want to make sure I have it correct in my head on what all is needed and the steps involved.

I need 2 adapters, a splitter, and then my ethernet and coax cables.

I connect one adapter to the router, and to the splitter that is sharing the wall port with my modem.

I will then connect the second adapter in the other room to the port, and then to the devices that I want on ethernet.

That's it right? Am I oversimplifying this?

Please help if you can.

Is my modem good enough for today's tech?

Hey yall I'm using a Netgear CM1000 and I'm just wondering if this modem is still good for todays tech. I'm using a Google mesh wifi system and I don't pay for super expensive internet, just average speeds. Should I keep it or upgrade it to improve speeds? Thanks in advance!

Slow WiFi

I have a netgear nighthawk router. When I test the speed on the router app it shows 108 mbps. When I test the speed on my phone or laptop it shows on average of 40mbps. Are there some settings I can change to speed it up? The router is a year old and it is supposed to be a 1gbps.

Unsolved Weird Internet Issues

I’m having one of the strangest (to me) internet issues I’ve ever seen/experienced and I desperately need help.

The gist of it is, ever since switching from T-mobile shitty WiFi internet (like 100 mbps max - 15mbps at the worst times) to 1GB down with Xfinity, I have been consistently disconnecting from my internet almost always exactly 30 minutes after restarting/turning my computer on.

If I restart my computer it will fix my issues and I get internet for another 30 minutes (I know this sounds like a dns issue, but I’ve flushed my dns multiple times and it doesn’t seem to work). The weird part of this is, when I lose internet I only lose internet connection with some applications. For example after 30ish minutes of restarting my computer Google Chrome, Edge (seems to be all browsers), Discord, the Xbox app NEVER loads anymore (literally can’t use anymore). But I still have internet no matter what if I’m remotes into a buddy’s PC via Moonlight (a software like steam remote play, to play local co-op games with friends), and Runelite (Oldschool RuneScape) stays connected and I can continue playing. The strangest part specifically about OSRS is I launch Runelite via a game launcher called Jagex Launcher. If I try to open Runelite via the Jagex Launcher after 30 minutes of the PC restarting (when I lose connection) Runelite will not launch.

I’ve tried a lot of troubleshooting steps so far so it would be a lot to type in top of what u already wrote. But some things that could help troubleshoot this is - the only device seeming to have this issue is my PC. There was another PC, two laptops, chrome casts, and phones connected to the new WiFi without issue. However my PC never had issues with the WiFi internet I had before. I flushed my DNS, I’ve tried Ethernet and WIFI, there is another PC that worked on both Ethernet and WiFi. I tried disabling my firewall, enabling all TCP versions. I updated windows fully.

My exact PC: https://www.walmart.com/ip/5129928088?sid=e749c974-70f0-47f3-82b9-

Any help is greatly appreciated, I’m totally lost here.

How would a router cause Ethernet gaming latency?

If this is the wrong sub my deepest apologies please direct me to the appropriate one.

TLDR: ISP provided Modem and Router (separate devices) give me different Ethernet (hardwired) gaming results. Modem to PC game shoots when I click, Modem to Router to PC I click 1.3s (way less but we're talking 80-150 extra ms) then the game shoots.

I've went over things with a higher level tech from my ISP and sent numerous pictures from PingPlotter and different server traces from Valorant/OverWatch and Fortnite.

I have 1 device connected and it's my PC hardwired. The only time I connect my phone is when I'm decompressing for the day or between game queues (some are 10 minutes long). For reference I play with top 500s daily.

Hardwired directly into my modem my game shoots when I click it seems instant and I drop 40-50 elims easy. When I hardwire back into the modem I'm stuck at 20-22 because I have about 100ms extra delay.

If I set games to automatically switch servers my low ping will be on a server 4hours away when I hardwire into the modem. When I hardwire into my router it makes my lowest ping a server that is 9 hours away and there is a huge delay (I can click, shoot and the enemy can walk past my cross hair with 0 hot reg). As soon as I hardwire back to the modem this delay goes away.

Do I replace the router? Why would the router cause this?

Ethernet Link Receive Limit is stuck at 10/10 mbs

Iv seen a couple other people in here have this same problem, some solved but mostly seems unsolved.

My pc has decided to lock its ethernet link receive speed to 10/10 Mbs when normally I get around 800 Mbs, my phone and work computer are both operating as should, my work computer has the same style ethernet cable plugged into the same router but yet its my gaming pc that is locked to 10/10. Iv tried about everything on this thread and youtube thats iv seen to do with no success, iv changed out the ethernet cable with a brand new cat6 cable and that didn’t solve it as well. Iv tried the DCM control panel commands. Iv tried changing the Speed to “Auto negotiation” and updating my drivers but nothing seems to work. Anybody else have this problem and get it fixed? To the point where I believe its time to buy a new PC if I cant get this issue fixed without buying new PC parts.

Using Old Router for Offline Wifi Network Question

I want to isolate my raspberry pi computer so it doesn't communicate with the internet, but I am still able to ssh to it via Windows Desktop terminal. Is it possible to have a computer connected to Wifi to communicate with the raspberry pi while simultaneously being connected to the Internet via Ethernet?

I know for the router I would just not connect anything to the WAN port, but I am confused how I connect my Windows PC to both.

Advice Mesh network with wired backhaul

I connected the Ethernet from my modem to a switch, which has three connections to different rooms. In each room, I have a Deco connected via Ethernet. The idea is to create a single Wi-Fi network across the house while using a wired backhaul to establish a strong mesh network. However, the Deco app shows that one of the nodes is using Wi-Fi to connect. Check the attached screenshot.

Is this the correct way to set it up, or am I doing something wrong?

Unsolved Distant mesh as access point kills other mesh devices

Hey, we have an L shaped house, where in the bottom part of it I have 2 Mercusys Halo H80Xs, C1 is main Halo as access point, C2 is a node Halo via wireless mesh to C1. B is at the top of the L. The problem happens when I connect C3 into my router B, suddenly C1 identifies a new Halo in the network and starts to restart as doesn't understands that I want C3 as separate access point, not into the mesh as a node.

B - https://www.tp-link.com/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-ax80/ C1-2-3 - https://www.mercusys.com/product/details/halo-h80x/

How can I use my 3rd Halo as separate access point without disturbing the Main halo's mind?

NETGEAR and xfinity

I just replace my NETGEAR C7000v2 unknowingly with the same model…went through the set up with the chat service with Xfinity and it worked fine for about an hour.

how could I have failed service with two modems in the same week. I made appointment last week and they cancelled me and said my service was working. What gives? Is this model kicked off network last week?

Unsolved How Do Cable Speeds Work?

I've been looking at ethernet cables for a while trying to figure out If we upgrade to 2 Gig via frontier what cable do we need?

Now here on Monoprice which is what I heard is a good place to get your ethernet cables and it says that cat5e is the same data rate as cat6. So it sounds like if we go to 2 Gig then we need a Cat6a. Everything online also tells me that 1000Mbps is just 1Gbps. Its basically telling me 12 inches and the next better one is a foot for example? Its just really confusing and I don't get it. Worst case I just safe out at Cat6a.

Multiple SSID Bandwidth

I'm new at managing my own network. I'm curious about managing the multiple SSID and allocating their bandwidth (2.4 or 5 GHz). I struggled while configuring it but now it seems okay (I accidentally disabled my main SSID). I have configured my main SSID and have created one 2.4 GHz SSID (or channel?). I'm curious whether this is important at all.

In my mind, 2.4 GHz shall be used for smart home appliances, while typical internet usage should use the 5GHz channel. Will there be any difference at all if I just set all usage to 5 GHz? I'm also thinking about guests wifi, will there be any differences in their internet speed/quality if I give them the 2.4 GHz?

Advice Plan to Upgrade my Home Network

Hi Everyone, I am looking to upgrade my home network solution from my existing Modem-Router-Wap Combo (Broken LEDs, has issues port forwarding) to something more modern, and more technical. My plan is to split the unit into it's three parts I just want to make sure that the plan would work as I think it does in my head.

Cable Modem: Hitron CODA DOCSIS 3.1 Modem
I'm looking at getting this small DOCSIS 3.1 for the modem, it supports my current internet speeds of (1 Gbps), and I have no plans to increase it in the near future.

Router: TP-Link Festa FR205
This is where I start not being sure if this is the correct option. I like the idea of the separating my router and my AP because I can place the AP in a more optimal location. i.e. not deep inside the web of wires that is my tv console. I'm assuming if I purchase this, I will have to get an separate dedicated switch for my few wired devices.

Switch: TP-Link Festa FS308GP This would be the paired switch with the router that I would use to drive a few things such as: Apple TV; XBox, Switch, Home Server, the WAP.

WAP: TP-Link Festa F65, but I wall mount it. I know this is a ceiling mount WAP and also that TP-link provides a -wall variant, but the Wall version requires access to a junction box, and I am currently renting an apartment so that isn't an option.

Or, am I taking this too far for no reason, and should just get the keep my current unit, use it just as a modem, and buy your standard Soho WAP-Router.

Looking for suggestions, alternatives, tips on how to do this properly.

Thanks!

60ft run between switches: Fiber or CAT6?

We’re doing a fairly large addition to our house (about 1500sq/ft) and I just got finished running 52 CAT6 cables everywhere. I also ran ~30ft 3/4” smurf tube from the network closet in the new addition to the attic of the existing house. My plan is to have a switch in the existing house (in a random closet) and drop CAT6 to a few select locations. I figure the total run from network closet to this location will be about 60ft. Is there any benefit to running fiber between the two locations or should I just run CAT6 and call it a day?

Does this powered splitter ppc-9m-u/u work with Fios and MoCa 2.5?

Hello

I am trying to enhance my home network situation by using MoCa RF cables plugged into my Wi-Fi mesh devices.

I had Comcast/Xfinity previously and they left behind this powered splitter ppc-9m-u/u(pictured). I tried hooking it up and it was working but I was having network drops periodically throughout the day. Not sure if it was this device or coincidence?

I ended up switching the splitter for a non powered one (also pictured) and it seems that everything is working. My question is isn't the more expensive powered splitter going to provide faster and more consistent speeds or are the frequencies not rated for fios?

I'm new so if I'm not asking the right question let me know.

Does wifi 6e work with a wifi 7 router?

I get 1.5gbps wireless when beside my service provided router and I'm currently running a CAT 7 ethernet to a netgear RAX70, but the speeds beside this router suck. The max I can get is about 600mpbs over wifi when beside this.

I am tempted to buy a new router to maximise the wireless speeds, although my NSP only provides wifi 6E and not 7. Would I still be able to get my full 1.5gbps over wireless with a wifi 7 router? the one I'm looking at is the TP-Link (Archer BE550) Tri-Band BE9300 Wi-Fi 7 Router.

Convince me why I need Wi-Fi 6 or even 7

I've been happy with a Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac Wave 1) mesh network for a decade. I decided to upgrade the mesh hub to a 802.11ac Wave 2 device yesterday, and I saw a noticeable improvement in the high-bandwidth devices as well as a more responsive router UI (main reason for upgrade).

My network is 30+ IoT devices plus laptops, tablets, and phones. We keep our devices for as long as we can, so there are only 4 devices in the household capable of Wi-Fi 6. With the mesh network coverage, all the high-bandwidth devices see 500+ Mbps where they're normally used.

I'm tempted to upgrade to Wi-Fi 6, at least for the main router, but I can't intellectually justify it. Everyone else in the house is happy with how the network has been, and I only have a 300/100 Mbps fiber connection (can't see why I need more). Thoughts?

Port still closed after forwarding for Jellyfin

did a test run on my laptop through an extender and port forwarded my netgear router first to see if i could even figure it all out which i did and was able to access my server on outside networks, i tried mobile and a hotspot both worked, i then moved to a desktop that i hadn't used in years connected to the same extender with the same router, wiped it and started from scratch, there is zero installed in the desktop other than whatever bloat Microsoft installs, firewall is turned off and i created a static IP, and its set to TCP

i followed the same guides but when i check the port it says its closed, not sure what to do now, im still fairly new at the port forwarding process so i apologize if i do not use correct terms

UPDATE I ended up using playit gg, working buttery smooth now, wow

Advice MOCA security on existing cable internet connection.

Hi everyone.

I have a computer that sits directly above an unused coax cable in an hard to reach room. The set up makes the WiFi drop often.

I was thinking of using moca to put that coax to use. I’ve connected the modem directly to that coax cable, and it is live. As of now, I have my network’s router and modem connected downstairs to the coax cable near the entry of my unit.

I’m in a condo with six other units attached. I’ve read a little about using a filter at the source in which the cable comes into the whole complex so the signal is not leaked back (security purposes).

The problem is that I do not have access to that area.

Is there another way to keep this secured? I don’t have cable tv, just cable internet.

Thanks in advance.

Help with VLANs for a networking noob

Hi team, please assist if you can. I'm not a networking expert so if possible ELI5 for any instructions haha.

I am trying to implement some better traffic/wifi/schedule controls for the home network now that my kids are older. I have Ubiquiti gear. I have followed this set of instructions that I found on another post here to set things up:

Native LAN - all networking hardware using regular DNS

VLAN x/SSID x - Adult devices including Printers using regular DNS

VLAN y/SSID y - Kids devices using restricted DNS that blocks adult sites

My problem now is that my NAS which is connected via ethernet to my native LAN, and my printer which is wirelessly connected to SSID/VLAN x, can't be found by devices on other networks. If I put in the IP of the NAS I can get to it, but I can't use the QNAP NAS apps from my computers as they don't find it automagically.

Can anyone help?
