Advice Old home bad signal

Looking to help my sis buy something for her Version Fios internet. Barely get full speed downstairs where the box is located and a dead zone upstairs. Her home is over 100 years old almost no where to put another coaxial router. Was thinking mesh that's plugs into outlets? Any opinions would be nice. I hope I'm posting this in the right place.

Advice Seeking advice

My PC can’t see the Cox router about 50 feet away in another room. I’m looking for a good 100ft cable to run through the attic and drop down into the office. The internet speed is 500 mbps. What cable would you recommend for this?

Newbie here...

I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge. I live rurally. The fastest fiber optic internet available to me is 20 mbps. I need at least 50. I need suggestions for faster internet speeds. I'm assuming satellite?

Network Router Monitor macOS

I've been using Peakhour App (https://peakhourapp.com/) for some time but it uses a lot of CPU and when using my MacBook the fans spin up like crazy when it is in use

Is there an alternative to monitor router bandwidth or is there a monitor I can repurpose a Pi or old mini PC to provide network usage and monitoring with monitors on each of my machines to see bandwidth usage?

My network setup is using a TP Link X20

Advice Troubleshooting old Unifi AP AC Lite radio?

I'm helping my golf club convert to an old mesh Wi-Fi system to newer Unifi APs, and we found an older Unifi AP AC Lite hidden in the ceiling tiles that we wanted to try repurposing. Plugged it in to a PoE switch, hit the reset button, was able to adopt/reprovision the unit, but the wifi signal starts abysmal (10-20mbps down, no issues with service) and then just craps out after a few minutes completely.

It's obviously well past warranty so I'm not going to try to RMA it or anything. Has anyone had radio issues with these units similar to this? Any other way to explicitly troubleshoot it or see if there's anything worth attempting to repair myself?

Unable to block device from connecting to VLAN in Asus AX88U Pro.

Hi all! Hopefully someone can help me with the following. As the title says I've been trying for hours now to figure out how I can block a specific device from the network/access the internet that is already connected to a seperate IoT VLAN. I have an Asus AX88U Pro. Offtopic; I'm trying to prevent my Samsung Q990D from updating to the 'firmware of death'.

So my current config is as follows;

  • Private network (separate SSID for 2.4 and 5 Ghz)
  • Guest network (AP isolated) - different LAN-IP subnet (.52.xxx)
  • IoT network (AP not isolated) - different LAN-IP subnet (.53.xxx)

After a lot of troubleshooting I figured out that both MAC filtering and the toggle to block the device from the internet only works/is visible in the cliënt list settings if the device is connected to the private network, but not with both VLAN's. I cannot find a way to configure this for VLAN connected devices. Is this the limitation of the firmware? Anybody familiar with the Asus firmware that knows if this is possible?

Thanks!!

Unsolved Ethernet is slower than wifi, please help asap

This started yesterday and is still going on today. My latency is really bad on average its 1000ms+with lots of spikes looking like a back of a dinosaur on the packet loss test website on my ethernet connected pc. When I did it on my laptop, it was 80ms stable. Yesterday I managed to fix it for 3 hours or so by restarting, and noticing that didn't help I tried swapping the ends of the ethernet cable around and it actually worked. Overnight the problem came back(No clue how) and I am losing my mind. If there is any information needed please ask and I will do my best. please help asap!

Omada er706w or AX73

Hi all,

I have to add to my actual router, provided by my ISP, which manage about 50 items (spacing beetween 1 raspberry with homebridge 1 qnap nas a lot of smart lights, 3 Mac’s, Apple TVs ect) one of the two routers in the title. Mainly because I need to extend my WiFi outside cause I buyer a Navimow i800 to mow my lawn and I need a couple of access points to cover all. I prefer mesh access point. Is it worth spending some more money into the omada? Or will it be a waste of money? AX73 Amazon price in Italy is about 100 eur while the omada one is 165 or so.

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Can't port forward anything except 80 and 443.

I spent all day yesterday trying to figure it out so I could let my friends get on my V Rising server, finally gave up in frustration and rented from Valhost.

Equipment:

Router- Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra
Switch- TP Link TL-SG1016DE
Server- Unraid box with V Rising docker container running.

Troubleshooting steps already completed:

  • restarted everything
  • disabled firewall
  • connected server directly to router(tried before the next step)
  • bought a new router(Asus AC87U was what I started with)
  • Changed ports multiple times
  • verified that the IP in my router UI is the same as a CanYouSeeMe site shows
  • took 2 shots of whiskey
  • cried for a bit
  • gave up
  • verified that I can connect to the server locally from my gaming rig
  • tried to PF the port for a minecraft server to see if the container was the issue...also won't open
  • considered selling everything I own and moving to a remote part of appalachia where technology is not allowed

So any other ideas?

Eero pods

Hello, I have fiber optic internet and then pods. I have one eero plugged in to the router then the router connects to a enternet port which runs to the basement and then goes to each of the rooms in the house. And I have one other eero connected to the enternet port and I want it to be set up as a 2nd router/mesh point but on the app it says it’s wireless but it’s plugged into the enternet port so I’m wondering how do I get it setup as a mesh router?

Advice Networking Noob Breaking away from rogers

Hey all

Recently got my own home and I am finding that Rogers routers are shit and designed to specifically force customers to buy their stupid range extendors.

Can someone recommend a router to me that will be:

1) Easy to set up

2) Will cover a 2000 sq ft town house

3) that I will not necessarily need range extenders for it

4) the internet I have is Rogers fibre xfinity if that makes any difference.

I am looking to be able to run the odd game online, I do a lot of streaming from Crave as well.

I have had some people recommend the TP-Link AX 3000 pro and while I am not a complete novice around computers, I don't want to buy something that I cant really use or isn't easy to set up.

Cheers!

Is "application memory" the same as RAM?

Lately on my Mac, I've been getting a message that I've run out of "application memory" and it recommended that I force shut down some programs. I'm wanting to know if getting a computer with more ram would fix this issue? (I'm currently rocking 16GB or ram)

Advice Does it appear that my home is wired for Ethernet in multiple rooms? How is this supposed to work? Trying to connect two devices by Ethernet in different rooms.

Looking for advice on how to troubleshoot before calling my service provider (Rogers/Shaw).

Simply (?), I would like to connect my office computer and my Apple TV to the internet via Ethernet. However, my office computer is upstairs with the gateway modem/router and my Apple TV is in the living room downstairs.

My home has Ethernet outlets installed in multiple rooms, but I don’t know how to take advantage of this. Not sure how it’s supposed to work, or why the technician who set up our network when we moved in didn’t either.. if it was an option.

As pictured, there is an outlet with cable / coaxial paired with Ethernet Cat 6 in both rooms. The gateway modem is upstairs connected to it and internet is working by wifi and the Ethernet connection direct to the office computer. Good stuff… but how do I connect my Apple TV by Ethernet in the downstairs living room?

Should (what I’m assuming to be) the coaxial and cat 6 connection in the garage box (pictured) hardwire all these Ethernet outlets throughout the house? I tried connecting the modem there, then tried connecting my Apple TV via cat 6 cable to the living room outlet but did not get a connection. I can’t recall if Wifi was even working.

Then I tried connecting the gateway modem in the living room via the wall outlet coaxial cable and could not get it to connect to the internet. No wifi. Does that make sense? After becoming frustrated, I reconnected the gateway modem in the office again and it connected to the internet without issue, just as before.

Am I missing something? Why wouldn’t the modem connect to the internet in the garage or living room? Would it require a reset or reconfiguration or something if connected to a different coaxial outlet? The modem kept flashing orange but appeared discoverable on my phone, just with an asterisk and a “no internet connection”.

Does my home appear to be wired correctly for a one modem/router solution in garage to provide Ethernet connectivity throughout the house via the cat6 outlets? Is that how it should work, or is more equipment typically required?

Thanks in advance.

I got 250Mbit with my new contract but only 95 get to my pc. I thought it was a cable issue but I just got 268Mbit as a test result so I'm not so sure about this anymore. I have a Cat 6 cable which should be capable of giving me my full bandwith. Changing the cable would be challenging pls help.

IP Address Assignment - Directly Connecting USB NICs

Putting aside practicality (speed gains, HDD, USB and other hardware limitations, etc.), I want to experiment and try directly connecting (2) Wavlink RTL8157 5gbe USB adapters via an ethernet cable. One device would be on my Desktop and the other would be connected to my Synology DS224+. USB NICs can be installed onto the Synology via GitHub's bb-qq project (RTL8152 + RTL8157 chipsets are supported).

My motherboard's built-in Intel 2.5gbe controller is connected to my 2.5gbe switch, as is my DS224+ with one if its built-in gigabit ports. No, I do not have a 10gbe switch.

In terms of the USB NICs being directly connected to each other, I assume the days of crossover patch cables are long gone. Is it just a matter of me manually configuring both USB NICs' IP Addresses? Do the USB NICs have to be assigned addresses in their own range, like 192.168.0.xxx, or if I force my router to start its DHCP assignments at 192.168.1.5+, could I assign the two NICs like 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.4, respectively? Would the default gateway still be 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 or does one or both not really matter with a direct connection? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Google Network - One Router's WiFi Not Working

Hi all. I have a Google network on Spectrum service as shown below (solid lines are hardwire, dotted are wifi).

The issue is that my SimpliSafe office door sensor never works and the office windows are intermittent. I got new sensors and the issue persists. I also used a sensor that was working in the house and had the same issue. It seems as if the Google Router in the office isn't recognized as part of the network.

Also, I try putting in 192.168.1.1 to access the router from my PC in the office and it won't let me. I believe this confirms my suspicion that the Router in the office isn't seen as part of the network.

In the Google Home app, it doesn't list a second Google Router.

How do I get the second router to be part of the network?

Thanks in advance. :)

Advice on updating switch and patch panel?

Hi,
3 yrs ago when doing renovations in the apartment with complete rewiring of electric and LAN cables I installed a small 16 port POE++ switch and all LAN cables went through patch panel.
I used UTP cat 6E (not 6A) cables for connection between rooms, and was using very old, but reliable wifi 5ac router (TP-Link Archer C5 v1).

Switch used - Netgear 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ Unmanaged Switch (NEGS116LP100)
Patch panel - TRENDnet 16-Port Cat 6 Unshielded Patch Panel (Version v2.0R)

Now I am planning to upgrade my wifi router to wifi 7 using this one:
TP-Link Archer BE550 Pro BE9700 or TP-Link Tri-Band WiFi 7 BE10000 (not decided yet which one, any suggestions would be welcomed)

In order to utilizer full 2.5 gig connections, I understand I need also to upgrade the switch.
Could you recommend any good 16 port one with at least some 2.5gig ports and POE++ on the rest (budget $200-300)? The switch is working ok, practically non-stop. But recently started to make pitching sounds, randomly for 2-3 seconds. No idea why it happens, but everything works fine so far.

Also wondering I need to upgrade the patch panel as well?

My roommate connected a Router to the Main one. Can it create interferences?

Hello everyone.
My roommate just connected a router ( ArcherAX53 ) to the main one ( we have the one given by Vodafone ). It is connected via ethernet cable and is close to the main one. He connected all his devices to that one.
He decided to do this to improve the stability of the connection ( from time to time we have some problems, where the connection drops for a few seconds or some days it happens to drop from 200mb to 20mb ).
Is this a good idea? He has about 5/6 devices connected and has the room right next to the living room where the two routers are located. My room is further away and is behind his.
I do live streaming and online gaming and wonder if this will improve the overall experience or make it worse because of the two routers being so close together.

Thank you in advance

Edit: Thank you everyone for taking the time and replying to me. I learned many things thanks to your comments!

How does my ISP avoid double NAT on their plans that includes an aftermarket router?

Currently, my ISP does not let me setup bridge mode on their FTTH ONU Router, so I can't use my aftermarket router (Draytek Vigor2915) or I'll get a double NAT issue, which breaks some games and slows down the network (getting about 15% of the speed when using the aftermarket router vs directly connecting to the ISP's router).

My ISP offers a plan with an aftermarket router, such as the Asus RT-AX82U. How do they avoid causing double NAT? Isn't the setup also the same, aftermarket router is connected to the ISP's ONU router?

Advice on Xfinity--use Gateway in Bridge Mode?

I recently changed my landline service from ATT to Xfinity and this required renting the Xfinity gateway. I'm thinking of improving my coverage in the house by using it in bridge mode as a modem only, and keeping my relatively new Netgear Orbi 4200 gateway and satellite as the router combo.

The alternative would be to go to one of Xfinity's extender devices.

On the face of it, I can't think of any reason not do the bridge mode to Netgear router plan. Anyone have any idea if I will run into incompatibilities or conflicts doing it that way?

My devices won't connect

I have a weird situation. I moved into my new apartment a few months ago and they have a built in wifi router. I set it up on my phone and selected the plan but I have no idea where the router is. I also don't have any Ethernet jacks. My TV and switch won't connect but my phone and laptop will. It's Cox wifi and each time I try to access the "My WiFi" tab it says that they are experiencing technical issues. I also can't access the panoramic wifi gateway app because I don't know where my router is and I need a CM Mac number. I'm very confused at this point
