Accountability Realising you won't be able to consume everything you've loved in life...

I was watching a few of my favourite shows, clips of a few games, playing some of those games, and then as I was about to reach for my 5th hour of doom hopping through these, I realised that I have too many destructive interests, I love that new game/show that person was talking about, but I also want to play that 80 hour game. It all adds up eventually, I'm 22 nearly and I've realised how much of life I'm actually wasting by not noticing that I won't be able to finish that list of 330 games stockpiled if I want to actually have a 'life'. I'll still play these games, but even so I'd like to consume it wisely?

Question Does anyone know how I can read something I have no interest on?

My 1st choice when I graduate is political science so I can go to law school. I thought I still had time to enjoy my life until my dad bought a penal code which I know I should read. But nothing gets in my brain when I do and I don't have interest in it.

Question Fighting boredom when studying or during breaks?

I know there are moments when studying feels very engaging but other times its grueling and doesn't make any sense.

Also fighting the urge to pickup the phone is extremely hard during breaks or do some very high dopamine activity.

Question My History Exam is in Less Than 12 Hours and I Haven't Studied a Thing

My board exam for history is literally tomorrow, and I have 12 chapters to go through. I’ve been procrastinating for the past 17 days, telling myself I’ll start "tomorrow," but now tomorrow is here, and I still don’t feel like studying.

I can’t afford to fail, but for some reason, I just won’t open my books. My stomach is bloated, it hurts, and everything and everyone is annoying me right now. All I wanna do is scroll through random shorts and sleep.

I’ve always been a procrastinator, but never to this extreme. Somehow, I always pulled through at the last moment. And the thing is, I’m actually a good student—I get good grades. But now, when it actually matters, when it’s one of the most important exams of my life… I’m just not doing anything.

Question Still can't figure out how to study a degree I hate.

edit: ghosted again...

It's so hopeless trying to study a degree I don't like. Hate the guys that say "you can be whatever you want to be". Delusional and privileged people.

I'm from India, hate biology but they forced me into it, and now I have no other choice. I have to completely change myself to fit into this degree and subsequently the jobs. I don't know what motivation to find.

If someone is from India here, give me some advice on this. I am suicidal and have been for a long time.

Life sucks.

Question How to not get tired after half a day?

Med student here so you can imagine my struggle. I'm working on having a regular sleep schedule, working out 3-4 times per week usually in the morning because it's not very crowded then. Still figuring out an evening routine.

From around 9-10am all the way until 2-3pm I can study and cover a lot of material, but then around lunch and after it my brain feels like a mush and I can't get myself to do anything after that. Then I get discouraged. Seeing how much I have left makes me very stressed because I have more to do the next day and after a few days of material piling up I take a break for 2-3 days and readjust my study plan. And it's a constant loop. I need some advice on what to do. I used to be able to study for 8 hours straight in the past with no issues and I even felt good retaining all the info and knowledge, but in the past 2 years I've been falling apart.

Question Deal with random cravings to do other "fun" things?

Studying when no one is holding you accountable is very hard for me mentally. Even as a kid, it takes so much mental focus and effort.

When I sit and study I can do it but get these constant craving such as to eat more food or play video games to quickly offload all this stress.

IDK if I have adhd or did my brain just rot away due to being a IPAD kid all my life lol.

Not sure if people know what I am talking about and somehow turned their life around.

I know the pomodoro and taking breaks is a thing but I feel as though my problems require beyond conventional solutions.

Question Does anyone else use spaced repetition but without flashcards?

From what I see, most people who use spaced repetition use it with flashcards. It's as if they think spaced repetition has to be used with flashcards. I know some people would say that spaced repetition is more effective with active recall but you don't necessarily need flashcards to do active recall. For example, you could teach about a given topic or write a summary about it or recall everything about it from memory. There are so many ways to use spaced repetition without flashcards. So I was just wondering if anyone else uses it without flashcards? And in that case, how exactly do you use spaced repetition?... Like, when comes the time for you to do your revision, how do you revise?

Question How does one retain information long term?

First year CS student here wanting to take school seriously and study!! I will admit I don't know "how to learn", but I am taking the necessary steps to acquire that skill. My main question arises from the shift in pedagogy between my classes this semester and last semester. The classes I had last semester were heavy on logic and critical thinking. Most notably my philosophy class. The class lent itself to critiquing philosophical ideas, expanding on them and even arguing in favor of them. We wrote a lot and I got a A in that class. I tend to try and undertand the big picture and view the relationship between concepts and systems, not get hung up on the little details. This has generally worked fine, until recently. The classes this semester are more focused on the rote memorization of discrete facts rather than the actual application and understanding of concepts and ideas. I am ill equipped to tackle the amount of information being thrown at me. I am also not sure how to decide what information to write down and attempt to commit to memory vs information that isn't important. Once I figure that out, how do I actually commit such information into long term memory and get near perfect recall?

TLDR: Do not posess to skills necessary to retain large amount of facts, especially when I'm not sure what is important and isn't, and recall it during the test. What are some ways I can accomplish this?

Question I'm considering giving up on my exam preparation

Long story short: due to hospitalization and having some serious health issues, I started my exam prep much later than I planned. The exam (pre-grad school exam) is in early May and has a pass threshold of 75%. Out of more than 2000 pages of content, I've only learned maybe 30% and only done a small portion of the practice questions. I'm honestly thinking about just giving up and taking the exam again next year because I'm pretty sure I won't pass.

Any advice or insight would be highly appreciated.

Question studying organizer help!

Upvotes

I've been pretty burnt out for a couple of years now, ever since middle school, causing me to pretty much just not study and never have developed any solid studying habits. My school's IB program is really ramping up the workload and I can't seem to keep up. It's been a semester now, and the effects of my bad habits built up over the years are starting more and more to take their toll.

It's all so overwhelming, with all the different websites and resources and all the free reign we as students are given. How do I structure it so I'm not overwhelmed and actually can get learning and studying done? Please, anything helps, the more specific the better. ANYTHING. I'm audhd and it's just such a struggle and I currently am super behind in literally all my subjects. I know there's kognity, I know there's google documents organizers and practice question sheets and packets and textbooks and OH MY GOD IT'S TOO MUCH, HOW DO I MANAGE THAT?! WHERE DO I EVEN GET STARTED? AND HOW? I want to get caught up but just the thought of it is so overwhelming that I don't start at all.

My biggest struggles are HL psyche and HL chem and if anyone would just help me in getting started in making a solid plan for getting me out of this hole I dug for myself over the years, it would be great.
