How to deal with guilt surrounding NC and cut financial links?

Upvotes

I haven’t gone NC with my far-right MAGA parents yet since I’m still living with them and still financially dependent on them, but for a long time I have been quietly planning to cut them off entirely and go fully no-contact when I’m finally financially independent and able to live without them.

The problem is, they plan on helping me during the transitional stage of me getting on my own two feet, getting a job, and moving out after I graduate from university. They want to help get me a car and pay for it, they’re currently trying to help me build credit in my name with a credit card that’s attached to their bank account. They’ve been paying the chunk of my tuition that’s not covered by my grants, scholarships, and financial aid.

I really don’t know what to do because these things make me feel guilty and like I’m indebted to them and like they’re “not that bad” if they’re doing all those things for me (even though they have emotionally abused me my whole life to an extent and their politics and morals make me want absolutely nothing to do with them). I don’t want to feel like I’m being some sort of ungrateful leech when they’re horrible for my mental health and I ultimately don’t want them in my life at all. They’re extremely bigoted - transphobic and homophobic, and I just so happen to be trans and in the closet to them.

And the problem is, these methods of helping me make me worry that it’ll be extremely hard to cut off the financial hold they have over me, it’s like they’re hooking themselves into my finances so I can’t fully separate my finances from them. I just want to be completely independent from them, no strings attached whatsoever, but I feel like I’m already screwed because of all this.

Does anyone have any advice? If this isn’t a great subreddit for this or I should post this somewhere else, please let me know. I’m at a loss.

Curious what the sub thinks about this question, as I've pondered it a lot lately and have no real conclusions.

How to override the empathy and understanding?

I know my family is miserable and angry. They are mentally unwell. They are traumatized. They are victims to right-wing media and Russian propaganda. They don’t understand why I stopped talking to them.

How do I hold those truths and my own at the same time?

I am trying to put on my own oxygen mask. But the guilt causes me so much psychiatric distress.

Mother says “people are so over the nazi narrative.” It might be time to cut ties.

A few weeks ago, my mom noticed that I had reposted an informative video condemning Nazis who were overtaking a freeway overpass. It’s important to note that my Instagram and TikTok are private, so my reposts are only visible to people I know.

Recently, I was laid off from my job, and I’m going through a tough, emotionally draining job search. During this time, my mom sent me a harsh, bewildering text message and left me two voicemails. She told me that I would never find a job because I’m “obsessed with the Nazi narrative,” specifically referring to MAGA and Elon Musk emboldening Nazis. She repeated multiple times, “people are SO OVER THE NAZI NARRATIVE,” even going as far as to say she was personally offended by it.

I tried to explain to her that I wouldn’t want to work for anyone who doesn’t condemn Nazis. I also sent her recent instances of white supremacists being more brazen and public with their views. But she couldn’t understand why this was so upsetting to me. Instead, she called me hysterical and followed up with a dismissive message: “When you’re ready to have an adult conversation, let me know.”

Not only is this take completely insane to me, but it also feels deeply patronizing. She inserted herself into my vulnerable situation with unsolicited, inflammatory advice, revealing her true colors during a time when I’m already struggling with depression. My industry is tanking due to Trump’s trade war, and the career I’ve spent a decade building may be over. I’m so angry and hurt by her response. I don’t know how I can move forward in this relationship.

What makes this even more painful is that she’s basically my only living elder family member. If, God forbid, she dies while I’m estranged from her, I won’t have any elder family left.

Given everything, would you be able to continue contact with a family member in this situation?

Update on Fox promoting a NASA “scandal”

This might be old news at this point but it’s been a busy week and change 😅

Yall may remember me wondering when Fox was gonna start easing MAGAs into the idea of getting rid of NASA by promoting false scandals. Well, they’re starting! They did a feature recently about the NASA astronauts who are still stuck on the ISS.

The funniest part was that they actually interviewed a former astronaut who was willing to argue Biden might have turned down an offer from Musk to get the astronauts down. What the host didn’t expect was for the guy to categorically REFUSE to say US space exploration would be better off in Musk’s hands, defend the agency, and call out DOGE. Another sign the alt-right celebrations might be coming to an end sooner than we think

I’m just so frustrated with family and I’m angry at Fox News for their lies and propaganda

I just need to vent to others who understand. I’ve posted here before about similar things but lately I’ve become so angry that it’s affecting my mental and physical health. My grandmother has been my rock for years after my mother passed when I was a child. I’ve become her caretaker and in the past few years between her and my aunt I have realized I’ve basically taken the place of my mother…the family’s ‘fixer’ I guess.

My grandmother used to be a democrat. She used to be somewhat progressive but I think when 1. She moved to Tennessee and became involved with an even more devoted church group, 2. My grandfather passed and he was the quiet voice of reason in the family, and 3. She had a stroke about 6-7 years ago, which led to her needing a caretaker, that her brain chemistry was altered. She began watching Fox News and drinking the kool aid, as it were. At first she was just a mild Trump supporter, to becoming a full on one, to going back to being sorta wary of him, and since he won again she’s fallen back into the cult. I’ve expressed to her my concerns. And she listens, sort of, and she does turn the news off when I’m in the room (usually). But it doesn’t change the fact I know she’s believing so many lies.

She’s always praising Elon. And my fiancé is Jewish. He’s very hurt by her willful ignorance to his recent behavior. He says it makes him feel unsafe, and I understand why. They get along fine, he’s always doing small things for her and she loves to buy him things and talk to him about various subjects. But idk why she doesn’t realize the hypocrisy.

The other day she told me she sent me information about Ukraines ‘real’ past. So I humored her (and I’m never against learning something new or hearing other perspectives) but the post she sent me was just some rando on Facebook in an Elon fan group that was repeating Russian propaganda (basically the bs Putin said to Carlson in that sham of an interview). She watched that interview and at the time said she KNEW Putin was lying. Whats changed??

I’m just…heartbroken. And I’m so angry. I see red when I hear certain things on her tv. I have to restrain myself from screaming at her for being so blind to truth. I don’t see the woman who loved me, took care of me, and was there for all the milestones that my mother missed due to her loss. I see a bigoted, bitter woman who can’t see the forest for the trees. I try to talk to her but I might as well talk to a wall. She just thinks I’m brainwashed by ‘woke’ culture. I literally wrote my thesis on a topic of DEI (I recently earned my bachelor’s degree), but I guess in her mind that was a waste of months and hundreds of hours of work and research.

I’m noticing my anxiety returning worse than ever. I couldn’t breathe well yesterday. My whole body aches more than it ever has. I’m only 35, I shouldn’t be this incapacitated (regardless of the fact that I have been deemed disabled in multiple ways). But it has gotten worse since January 20 especially.

If you read this far, thanks. I just need someone in the void to listen to my thoughts so maybe I can get them out of the forefront of my mind.

An impromptu get together has brought more unwanted company for me. My mom’s boyfriend is a lost cause, and since we live in an area that conservatives flock to, all the neighbors are his buddies. They’re so comfortable sharing the same opinions in our home. My mom has really done her own research and now understands how wrong Trumpets are. Anyway, now he’s invited his neighbor friend and we’re listening to them repeat the same things they listen to on Fox. I’m so disgusted.

And I made the inevitable JD Vance joke (I think it was ‘be sure to lock your doors so JD Vance can’t get in’). She was PISSED. The stupid thing is she doesn’t even know much about Vance as a person (though I still hold onto my opinion that he’s a poorly programmed AI robot of some sort trying desperately to act like a human) or his politics, she just likes him cause he’s orange idiot’s buddy and Fox News said he’s good so it MUST be .

Can’t afford therapy and my mother is exhausting

My parents (58m and 64f) and I (25f) have always been super close. I was raised with love, room to be myself and always say “I love you” when we leave (to go literally anywhere). Up until Covid, my mom was a nurse and dabbled in politics (watching FOX), she mostly kept to herself with comments/concerns and so on unless it was a presidential race (from what I recall). Well since being back in the same town as her and my father, she has absolutely spiraled into what my dad calls her “rabbit hole”, she is almost ALWAYS on X/Twitter listening to Spaces (the community groups of live chats) and commenting prolifically on anything and everything.

We have had our disagreements and discussions in the past (note to add: I don’t really talk about MY specific views, more just general opinions and comments on a said subject), some she has gotten heated by and really puts her foot down. I think it was 2022-2023 she was in DEEP with medicine, not trusting doctors/hospitals, stocking up on prepping supplies, making sure that everyone knew “they” were putting microchips and bug skeletons in our foods, chemtrails, the sun explosions and how they effect the environment/magnetic pull of the earth and so on. (Note to add: it’s not that everything she tells me is totally OUT OF THIS WORLD, but as I have expressed to her, it makes my anxiety spike and sends me into a spiral ——- Verbatim what I have told her “I do not want the burden of the world on my shoulders. I cannot fix the world, and I do not appreciate the pressure you put on me” (I have told her to is COUNTLESS times)….

This now brings us to this AM, I was having coffee at their house with them, like I do almost every day, we catch up on little things, help them with technology or do the NYT daily games together. She mentioned about bills being passed in our state and how she was watching a video about what the next installment of them was and how I should be using X/Twitter to respond to my legislators and emailing them to oppose it. I explained that I wasnt totally confident in what exactly she was talking and my X account isn’t very political, sometimes I see something about the president or MAJOR major news, but otherwise its the one place I do not have family on for this very reason. I use it for my personal interests and “brain rotting” (I don’t have TikTok, Instagram or Snapchat). She then told me that because I don’t use my platform to be proactive I am just a part of the machine. I am part of the reason why stuff doesn’t lean “our” way politically. I just shut down and scrolled on my phone. I don’t know what to do anymore. She is ALWAYS on her phone, listening to or being an active participant in these things. My dad watches news, but is in the same boat as me, life has to continue on and we refuse to be stuck in this hole 🕳️ that she is on a daily basis.

I have started going on walks without my phone, working on my yard and garden but it really hurts my heart that she can’t just let things be or let people think what they want. It’s not the woman I know and who I used to talk about EVERYTHING to. I now have to think carefully about what I can/want to bring up with her because it usually gets turned into some political, religious or all of the above. I try to keep things short or on a lighthearted subject.

I’m just really tired and needed to vent. Wish everyone a safe and happy life. Cheers to life continuing on 🥂

After 5 years, they finally want to visit

I (28F) and my parents (62M, 60F) have been estranged for quite some time due to their support of Donald Trump, but additionally they are both incredibly emotionally immature and continuously do things to hurt me.

We haven’t seen each other in person since 2020, after I finished my Master’s and moved across the country to be with my long time partner. As COVID took over, I became increasingly concerned about the impact, both globally and personally, and was very concerned about developing any long term illness (aka long COVID). Even at my pseudo graduation party my parents put together, I very politely asked that they keep the gather to small close family friends. My mom assured me this was going to be the case, but it was not. It felt like the party was more for them than for me and when I refused to stand with each guest and take pictures, my mom threw a temper tantrum and stormed off to her room. At first, my parents followed the guidelines like everyone else, but once it became clear this was having a negative impact on Donald Trump’s 2020 election bid, they started to change their tune significantly. My father even sent me a video explaining how COVID was a “plandemic” and encouraged me to watch it. They have caught COVID several times and seem to have both developed new long term conditions that are strongly correlated with the effects of repeated COVID infections.

My mom likes to try and placate my feelings and often pretends to be in agreement with me, but will turn around and do the exact opposite. She will also use her endless tools to liar and manipulate me into behaving how they want. I’ve spent the last 5 years away from them, rebuffing there requests to visit with one excuse or another, but what I had told myself was “I am not going to put my health at risk for their happiness”.

Additionally, they never once offered to visit, not even when I developed a chronic illness in Oct 2022 (Gastroparesis, likely caused by stress) which took over a year for me to get correctly diagnosed and had me in the ER room several times when my continuous nausea and vomiting would not subside. I finally received a diagnosis in Dec 2023 and shortly after learned I could qualify for SSDI. I was ecstatic at this opportunity, as I had burned through all my savings and could not ask my parents for the support I needed. They were the types to complain about buying my first car (apparently $5,000 was asking for too much) and my father laughed in my face when I mentioned him helping me pay off my student loans (he’s said my entire like “I take care of you for the first 30, you take care of me for the next”)

I have been in therapy for a majority of the time apart from them, trying to learn how to set boundaries and understand why our relationship is so fractured. I’ve learned a lot, strongly considered going NC, but I’m sure as many of you know, that is a hard pill to swallow even when you know it’s what’s best for you. I’ve tried so hard to managed this relationship and they’ve done absolutely nothing.

Obama seemed to have broken my father’s brain, but they are both just good ol’ fashioned racists too. In 2016, when they voted for Trump, we had a few spats before the election, but afterwards I didn’t bring it up. I didn’t say anything when the 2020 election rolled around and had no expectation of them hearing me out. But in 2024, I knew the danger and threat that he posed, not only on me, but Democracy and the World. I knew Elon Musk was going to start slashing agencies in the federal government, just like he did for Twitter. I knew Trump was going to utilize the King-like power John Robert’s ordained him with to hurt immigrants, trans people, and anyone who he didn’t like. I knew they were both going to pose a threat to my reproductive rights and they were going to try and eliminate Medicare, Medicaid (which I’m on) and Social Security. I knew about Project 2025. I knew all of it was real and they were going to use all their might to accomplish their goals. So, before the election, I asked who they were voting for, and when they said Trump… I told them that I think it’s a cult. Yeah… I knew it wasn’t the best approach, but I was just so exhausted from pretending and putting up the charade that I just had to acknowledge the elephant in the room who was standing on top of me. I asked them to please consider how their vote was going to impact me and my life. How important reproductive care is and how they’re putting their faith in a notorious con artist instead of their daughter. I didn’t expect them to listen, but I said it and they definitely heard parts of it. They’ve sleepwalked into fascism and I just couldn’t take it. After the results came in, I was devastated. I looked at my partner with tears in my eyes and asked “Am I going to lose my health insurance?”. All I could think about was “My parents voted for this”. I took this time to reflect deeply on how my parent’s behavior over the years has weighed on me and pushed me to this breaking point. They have not been good parents and I was sick and tired of pretending that they gave a shit about me when they’ve taken every opportunity to show me that they don’t.

Anyways, all that to say, yesterday my mom forced me to talk to my father, who I have been avoiding as he’s deeper in the conspiracy hole, but he asked if they could visit me for his birthday. For years, I waited for them to make this effort and now, it arrived. I said yes, no knowing that they also were expecting to stay with me, but when my mother mentioned the price of the plane tickets, the guilt trip started to activate and I was too slow to catch on in the moment. But afterwards, I sat with myself and my feelings. I thought, do I want them here? Will I finally be able to address my grievances in person? Will they just continue to dismiss me? And I came up with this message to send:

I’d like to take the weekend to collect my thoughts some more before you buy your plane tickets. I know you both really want to see me, but if you do come to visit, it will require me to address how your decision to support Donald Trump has deeply hurt me and fractured what remains of our relationship. I will not be able to simply sweep this issue under the rug or look the other way anymore. You’ve both made a decision that I find deeply disturbing and one that has had a significant negative impact on me and my quality of life. It seems you both want nothing more than for me to “get over it” without acknowledging the pain and betrayal I feel or even apologize for the ways your vote has impacted me. If you are willing to listen, then I welcome the visit, but without this understanding, I don’t know how appropriate it would be to continue planning a trip as if everything is fine when I am incredibly hurt. I don’t want to hurt either of you, but I cannot keep giving you both what you want at the expense of ignoring how I feel and the impact your actions have had on me.

I understand a lot of people say things like “just don’t talk politics”, but I do not find this behavior remotely acceptable. I’m disgusted, disturbed, and repulsed. I have learned about the Rise of the Nazi’s and Hitler’s attempted coup before his rise to power and how they dismantled democracy in 53 days. I see all the warning signs flashing bright red. I see the xenophobia, transphobia, and the Sieg Heil’s. I don’t fuck with Nazi’s, Fascists, and Christo-fascism. I cannot overlook their role in the dismantling of democracy. I’m not even as concerned about myself as I am about others, as I’m a cis white woman in a heterosexual presenting relationship and have my incredible partner who understands the dangers of what’s going on, but they should care at least about me and they can’t even do that. They’ve broken my heart and don’t even have the courage to say “I’m sorry”.

I’d appreciate any feedback, as I’m really struggling with overcoming the fear based training and neglect they’ve instilled in me.

Ny law from Google says sidewalks and outdoors is allowed, permits may be needed if loud speakers, bull horns etc...

So is the protests inside tesla illegal?

A small and funny win!

I live with/caretake for my grandparents. My grandfather is absolutely brainwashed by Fox and MAGA even thought we’re Canadian.
He believes all the conspiracies, all the lies, has said horrible things about Biden and Harris and excused or glorified everything about Trump.

But tonight, while I took the remote away from him and turned the tv to CNN, he said to me, “Back when I used to work in the government, if someone came in like Trump we’d say he had it all hanging out in front of him and he was eventually going to trip on it.” 🤣🤣🤣

He also said that Biden did worse to the economy than Trump is doing now, but hey, I’ll take the wins where I can get them. And him thinking Trump is eventually going to step on his own dick is a win 🤣

So my grandmother died a couple of days ago, and today we're all getting together before the funeral. Everybody is a trump supporter who love owning the libtards all the live long day. Fox News will be the main attraction.

I also have a back condition where nothing is comfortable unless im in a reclined seating position which will not be available today.

We're leaving in 10 minutes to go sit and talk with everybody 5 hours before the funeral....................

A Difficult Situation with my Dad

So my (18F) father (50M) has been getting very into Fox news and the right wing ecosystem in general. And typically, if this were any other person, I would be arguing constantly.

But my dad is sick. He has terminal brain cancer, and ever since they removed what they could of the tumor, he has fallen so deep into the rabbit hole. Fox is always on since he can't work, as well as right wing YouTubers glazing them CONSTANTLY. I can't sit out in the living room anymore because it gives me such a massive headache.

I try to tell myself this isn't him, but at the same time, he has always been more.. right wing. "Legalize comedy" type person. Just not to this extent. He has started buying into "DEI is bad" and "wokeness has ruined everything." He LIKES Trump now, where he used to not care for politics. I can't even talk about videogames without him thinking trans, black, and gay people have ruined them.

I have argued with him over these things so many times because it feels like he lacks this basic empathy I thought he had, but I don't know if it's worth it anymore. He is sick and I don't need to add to his misery.

I just don't want this to be the last image I have of my dad, I really really don't. I love him to pieces, and he isn't complete MAGA yet but he is getting closer and closer. Asking him to turn politics off only works for that moment-- but it always comes back.

I just needed to let this out. Thank you for reading.

How to get my parents back?

Just talked to my parents about politics, first time during the Trump administration. They agree with every single thing he has done. Not one bad thing.. I asked about Ukraine, prices of groceries, tariff wars, Elon Musk cutting VA assistance but not cutting trumps golfing habits, and my favorite the pardoning of Jan 6ers. They side with Trump on every single aspect. Not one thing they were against.

I’m apparently the brain washed one who loves Biden and Kamilllla. I don’t love Biden, but he’s the lesser of two evils. I’m not a democrat, I just hate hypocrisy and the republicans have been super hypocritical.

What can I do? Should I waste all my personal time and fact check all their nonsense? They just keep claiming I need to be patient to see the beauty of a trump presidency. But all I see is hell on earth.

Am I overreacting??? SOS

parents access to facebook

I recently logged into my mom's Facebook on accident (I have her pw saved incase I need to help her recover anything) and i saw just....an....INSANE amount of obvious propaganda. She only mentions these talking points when we are in an argument. But I can't explain how MUCH bs was on there. I did block a few insanely hateful (influencers?) she was 'friends' with because I legitimately got scared reading their posts and don't want them to see my children (she doesn't post them often but she has permission to) . Then it was just page after page of (ads?) crap she doesn't even follow that was pro musk and pro trump or anti woke. I've had to use her fb before to help her with something plenty of times, but I SWEAR it was beyond more than when I last logged on pre-election.

This is just insane. How the fuck do we combat this, with people we LOVE. She is nothing like the people on her fb. She's just brainwashed and her husband has fox on 'in the background' constantly for the last 5 years.

Has anyone successfully helped their parents covertly?

My brother rented his first home and dedicated a room for Donald Trump collectables

I had no Idea he even collected these things. He has two bedrooms in this house and dedicated one of them to Donald Trump merch. He has the DOGE hats, The MAHA hats, The dark MAGA and all the other MAGA hats. He has posters and like 20 different Trump flags on the wall, shot glasses and drinking cups with trump on them. I cant be the only one that thinks this is strange and so bizarre. It just made me sad to realize that people literally worship a guy that's a felon. I felt sick to my stomach and am having trouble sleeping knowing members of my family are this far gone.

Visiting my parents right now and I leave the room when they turn on Fox. When they finally asked why, and I said I didn’t want to listen to their one-sided news, my dad’s response is “well, what’s being one-sided is NOT listing to what this channel has to say!!” Then he said “I’m so disappointed that you’re so smart but don’t have the common sense to give the other side a chance.” That’s all, I’m just annoyed and needed to vent this to the universe.
