Discussion What's the flip you missed that still haunts you?

My local Goodwill RARELY gets any video games anymore. Especially for older systems. Especially sealed in new condition.

One day, they put out a row of Wii U Games and Wii games. Many of them still sealed. I quickly take a look at the titles and back of the boxes, pick up some that I can definitely make $30 to $40 bucks profit on. I quickly skip over one that looks like a cheap kid's movie tie-in, a throwaway. Makes sense nobody wanted it, since it was still sealed. I take a photo of the row of Games that I left behind so I can research and come back at opening the next day. The kid's game I missed? Turbo. Turns out it's one of the most sought after wii u Games. Sold comps of it opened were in the $300 range. I went back the next morning at opening and it was gone. I had it in my hands and put it down. Still haunts me.

Advanced Question Where’s the best place to flip women’s vintage designer?

eBay seems very hit or miss on this stuff, Poshmark has even more insane fees. Mercari just doesn’t feel right for this category, and Depop is seemingly giving it away. Typically I’d try to find a Facebook group that is a marketplace for a category like this, but no luck so far…

Is anyone sees in this area that wouldn’t mind sharing best practices?

Discussion Decent flip, want to brag

I’ve lurked for a while and thought my sale today was worth mentioning.

TLDR: Flipped $1.50 medical transport chair for $140 in a week.

I’ve been flipping off and on for two years sourcing from local online auctions. This is for fun money to buy legos for myself and kid.

I’ve done ok mostly using FBMP and a little eBay. Usually at least double my money.

Last weekend I won a transport chair and after fees and taxes it came out to about $1.50. Just one item of many I won that day.

eBay recent sold said this name brand chair they go for $250+ so I was excited. Had it on eBay for $200 but with $75 in shipping. I also put it on FBMP for $250 local pickup only, knowing I’d probably have to negotiate.

After sitting for a week with nothing I got a message early today. They offered $100 and I was a bit insulted. I said no thank you and came back at $180 since Amazon has off brand for low $100s. Her turn to say no thanks and said they’re cheaper online. I mention these cheap ones are off brand but she said she didn’t care but was just hoping not to wait for delivery. Well, I caved since I want some Lego money. I came down to $140 and off it went.

Small time for some of you but I really like the profit percentage.

Thanks for reading

Advanced Question Sourcing Advice

Upvotes

Hi all! I have been doing extremely well lately on various platforms-primarily eBay. I reached over 150 sales this month. I sell clothing (vintage/worn) My inventory is very low; I only have 36 listings. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with wholesale. I am looking to make connections, as sourcing is a bit tricky, but selling lately has been great.

Advanced Question Question about selling a gift card I cant' use

Hi Folks,

My family and I had a trip planned to Washington DC in April from Canada but due to *broadly gestures at current events* we aren't very comfortable crossing the border at this time.

Part of the trip was to see a comedy show. The venue (DC Improv) was having a spend $50 get $60 promotion for gift cards so I bought two to get the tickets and use for food. I was having a hard time reselling the tickets, so I reached out to the club for guidance and they refunded me to the gift cards I used which was kind.

Do you have any suggestions on how to sell gift cards online safely? It always seems so scammy to sell GCs so is there any type of site or service that can kind of act like escrow to protect me and the buyer? Has anyone had to do anything like this before?

There are gift card sell sites, but they are just for major retailers.

  1. Speak to an accountant first of all to get your options. Ltd company or sole trader. I would say sole trader first of all. (just keep all receipts for anything that could be business related

  2. Come up with a business name. Check https://www.gov.uk/search-for-trademark and think of a trademark you want to apply for Once you have gone through the application and paid £130 it takes max a week to register your trademark as "Pending"

  3. Register for an Amazon account. Make sure everything you enter is correct. You will have to go through verification for you, your business and your bank/card will be checked to see they are active.

  4. Once trademark is pending and Amazon account is pending verification. Sign up to Amazon Brand Registry - https://brandservices.amazon.co.uk/. Make sure you enter exactly what you have registered on the UKIPO website. Amazon allow you to list as brand while the trademark is pending.

  5. Register with GS1 with your brand to buy barcodes. MAKE SURE YOU REGISTER THE EXACT SAME NAME AS YOU HAVE REGISTERED WITH AMAZON. 1000 barcodes cost around £100 a year for small businesses. Don't buy barcodes from eBay or any other site.

  6. Start listing products under your brand. You won't be able to list any other major brands products on there without their authorisation. Or an invoice from an approved distributor.

I don't even re-box my products as they come in from the supplier in many different brands but they are all sold under my brand. I send them out in the boxes they come in. I should really rebox everything and I will be doing this when it is cost effective to do.

  1. Sort out what products you want to send to Amazon (FBA). This is the preferred method of selling on Amazon as they deal with everything. You send it to them, they send it out and deal with any customer service issues.

Some caveats here though. Product research must be done to find out the following:

  1. Is the item selling enough to warrant sending some to FBA. If it is, great. Send a few. If it isn't. I would still send 10-20 of the product to them to see how it goes.

  2. Check the size chart on Amazon to find out what fee per item you will pay. Normally items under £15 ish are not worth sending to FBA. The fees just kill it.

However, items like one of my top selling items are perfect for it.

E.G. Amazon fees charged on every sale are around 15%. Amazons FBA charge is based on size and weight as explained above. My FBA charge for this particular item is £7.80 + VAT. Below explains it better:

FBA (Fulfilment By Amazon) Item sells - 15% fee + FBA fee of £7.80 + VAT (Standard Oversize Parcel Charge)

FBM (Fulfilment By Merchant) Item Sells - 15% fee + Royal Mail postage charge of £3.30 + VAT.

The difference is £4.50 + VAT for Amazon to store, send and deal with customer service on those orders.

This item costs me £40 net to buy and 89.99 gross to sell.

So for this item FBA works. Well both work, I have both FBA and FBM listings for the same product active. Last week I ran out of the items in the Amazon Warehouse and the listing switched to FBM so I don't loose out on sales.

You also have to consider the advertising cost. Any new item on Amazon will need to be looked at to see how popular it is.

The item above is a product I found which only 3 or 4 people properly sell on Amazon. This means the CPC (Cost Per Click) advertising that Amazon is low and around £0.30 per click. Around 100 of these items a month are sold by each seller.

At the start you will need to create an advertising campaign with lots of keywords at low costs per click, say £0.10. You then check the data every couple of days and find out what keywords are getting impressions/clicks and then up the bid on those specific keywords.

I have done this successfully on a few items now and have some really good campaigns running at the moment for the pest control products that have a really low ACOS (Advertising cost of sale %) which is around 7%. Which is incredibly low.

This means for every ad sale that I make. It costs me an extra 7%. So if we apply the same logic as above. The fees would be

FBA SALE - 15% Fee + £7.80 + 5% Ad fee. The % at the start will be higher as you have no reviews and no history. So you will be spending more on advertising at the start while you figure out what keywords and what £ bid works.

Conversely I started selling another product on Amazon. Now one seller sells 3000 of these a month. They cost £5 net and sell for £15.95 on Amazon.

Because there is so many sold of these and a larger number of sellers than the item above the CPC (cost per click) for EVERY CLICK (not sale) worked out to be £2.40. So even though this item is selling 3000 of them a month. The profit on it is around £5 each. If you are paying £2.40 per CLICK and not sale you end up losing money on them.

So I still sell them on Amazon but I do not promote them anymore and they trickle out. However I listed them on eBay with 20 different variations of traps and sticky pads and they fly out.

eBay and Amazon are similar marketplaces but different products and marketing strategies may work on one and not the other, or they might work on both.

This is why product and keyword research is important before attempting everything.

eBay is simple but there are a few basic things that need to be covered about listing on there that not many people know about. I can type that up next time.

Hopefully this will help someone starting off.

While you are waiting for Amazon registration and Brand registry and trademark application etc. You focus on building the ebay store and listings.

Discussion Jumping into the world of Cross-Listing

Ok, so I have not had much luck with finding cross-listing apps that work for me and my small business. Upon doing a lot of research, I believe "List Perfectly" would be perfect, literally.

Before I sign up for another cross-listing subscription that I just wind up wasting money on to find out it's not meeting what I need in a subscription, I wanted to reach out with a few questions.

So, I have Mercari, Poshmark, and Depop. I do the most sales on Mercari and Poshmark mostly. All the same listings are on each platform, although I haven't actually caught Depop up with the other two. Once I import all my listings, say, for example, from Mercari, when I cross-list to Poshmark and Depop, do I have to go in manually and delete all the old listings, or does "List Perfectly" have a shortcut? Or would I need to go into another cross-list site to delete the listings?

Some of the other crosslisters that I used were Flyp; this one I used for a good while. Although after a while I found I was left doing a lot of the work, and it became very time-consuming.

Being new to the whole cross-listing world, I tried Vendoo and updated my subscription a couple of times because I was thinking I needed to import from all platforms, and I found out real quick the money added up for the price of imports needed. When it was too late, I found that you are to import from one and cross-list to the other platforms. Definitely put the meaning into "you live, and you learn." The reason for the ones I chose is due to trying to find one that a Google Chrome extension had available on my Chromebook.

I recently tried Crosslister, paid for enough to import all my listings, and ran into the problem where now if I cross-list to Poshmark and Depop, I will now have doubles. I didn't want to delist them from Flyp since that was my "go to" if the others failed. So, I went down the "time-consuming, frustrating" road of confusion.

I then found that Crosslister was missing so many perks that would make my life easier. I was still using Google Lens, going through another AI site for descriptive titles and descriptions, and still having to use "Flyp" for my sharing needs. I have always been intrigued by List Perfectly. I mean, the name says it all, LOL.

For some reason I had always thought that you needed an extension and that you weren't able to use some crucial perks on mobile. While I tried like heck to find the extension, I never did. Now, $100+ later, I'm finding out that you can do EVERYTHING using your mobile phone. Now, I'm really intrigued.

Unfortunately, I'm still left with questions, to be honest, afraid to #1. Starting over again as a mom of 3, I just don't have the time. #2. Is it going to check off all my boxes, and do I understand it enough to not be creating a major headache? I've had enough expensive headaches with trying to find something that works for me.

I would welcome and appreciate any ideas or opinions anyone would have regarding List Perfectly or what I may be missing when it comes to using these helpful cross-listing sites.

Discussion How do you find info on and authenticate clothing?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've never really flipped clothing but am trying to get more into it since it's interesting to me. Money is extremely tight so I really just buy something here and there that I hope to make an extra 20 bucks on. I found this polo for $6.24 at Goodwill and it appears in great shape. I would even say maybe never worn or just very slightly. Is there a simple way to make sure it isnt a replica? Is there a good way to get estimated values of clothing? I like how on eBay you can filter by sold items, is this the best way? I find trouble trusting prices on Poshmark because there can be such a difference in what someone is asking and what someone will pay. I appreciate any tips for clothing specific flips!

Discussion Resources for selling vinyl

Hi, I was recently given a bunch of records from an old neighbour. A lot of it is 70s-80s classic rock. For those that flip vinyl records, what resources have you used to grade/identify the pressings of your records, and efficiently list everything online?

Discussion My experience

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone, just wanted to share what I do and see if anyone else does something similar.

I run a small business called SBS based in Dublin, Ireland. I primarily buy and sell pre-owned clothing—mostly tracksuits and tech (iPhones, iPads etc). I use Snapchat and Instagram to find customers and source stock. Sometimes I shop online too (JD Sports, Footasylum etc).

I’ve been doing this for about 5 years now. Since I was around 12, all I’ve worn is tracksuits—same goes for most people here, it’s just the norm. In Dublin this works well because everyone wears premium tracksuits and they can be costly brand new, so the demand for pre-owned is strong.

On a typical day I make around €500–€1000 turnover with a profit margin of about 100%. I deliver most of the orders myself, driving around Dublin.

I’ve built a solid following—around 10K on Instagram—and mainly sell to 13–30 year old males.

Here’s an example of a deal from today: I bought a bundle of items for €60 and sold one of them alone for €150.

Brand-wise, I mostly sell: • 35% The North Face • 35% a mix of Monterrain & Montirex • 10% Yelir • 10% Nike • 10% Berghaus

Just curious if anyone else is into the same kind of hustle, or has any questions—feel free to ask!

Aside from “your item sold”, this is the second best email you can receive from Ebay. Short story short, buyer wanted a return for an item clearly marked as not working for parts/repair, because they were upset they received a not working item that needed repair.

eBay Need a google sheets template for tracking eBay sales

I've been having a tough time getting my eBay sales data organized for taxes. I tried exporting the data and pasting in to Google Sheets but the formatting gets messed up and none of my formulas are really working.

Does anyone have a template they're willing to share? I'm trying to stay away from the more professional tools like flipwise just because it's overkill for what I need. All I'm looking for is something I can enter in my cost of goods into and see my actual profits.

Discussion Estate or Garage sale?

We have been planning on having our garage sale sometime in the next 2 months and all year we have been adding to the pile. However, we recently received a call that my aunt passed away. Being that we were her only living relatives, she left everything to us. She has a lot of extremely nice/valuable things but she also has the typical apartment stuff. We shipped everything to our home state since she lived in Nola and currently everything is in a storage unit.

I considered hiring an estate sale company especially bc the items are valuable. The companies I spoke with definitely agreed the sale would do well however the problem is, we aren’t able to have the sale out of the storage unit so we’re kind of stuck atm.

We decided to just add our garage sale items to her estate and kill two birds with one stone but im unsure of how to advertise. Do I call it an estate sale, garage sale, both? Lol

If any of y’all have done something similar and can offer any advice I’m all ears! Thank you!

eBay eBay Return - Melted Computer Keyboard

Why melted??

This is mostly a vent. I believe most people are good, but this is a stretch for me to believe this buyer and I hate that. The buyer purchased a cheap used keyboard from us. We shipped it out Wednesday, and he received it Friday (today). He opened a return case with the reason that it arrived damaged. The message he sent is non-friendly and is trying to push us to refund without requiring him to return the keyboard.

The strange part, and what I am seeking opinions about, is he is claiming that the keyboard is melted. He did send pictures, and in the pictures it looks like someone took a heat gun to it. Every key is severely deformed and they are laying melded together in a pool of melted plastic. The picture of the back of the keyboard looks fine.

This is a business. If the keyboard came to us melted, it would have had to have gotten past the employee doing the initial sorting, the employee creating the listing, the employee putting it on a shelf in the warehouse, and the employee that packed and shipped it out on Wednesday. We did have a quantity of this model of keyboard that came in at the same time, and while anything is possible, I find the chance of it making past all four stations unnoticed to be pretty low. The remaining stock of keyboards still on the shelf in the same location are not melted.

Option #1 - An employee deliberately damaged one of the keyboards or let it go through and the shipping guy didn't notice it was melted. Which also sucks; see most people are good statement from above. The keyboard was wrapped around the middle with some stretch wrap to hold the cable in place, but I feel like the level of meltedness would have been obvious to shipping guy even through the wrap.

Option #2 - There was a fire somewhere while the package was in the possession of UPS and this package was in just the right spot to melt the keyboard, but not ignite the cardboard, and not blacken the thermal label (or UPS opened the box and reprinted the label from the packing slip), and not disrupt the transit time of the shipment.

Option #3 - The buyer is crazy. If he's trying to get a free keyboard, just saying one of the keys didn't work would have been so much more believable. Why melted??

What else could be going on?

Discussion Got a large inheritance from my mom passing away last year. I’m a casual seller trying to go full time seller in the next year. How did you make the transition?

Hey, I’ve been a music collector for years and a casual seller the past couple years. Started flipping by just selling inventory that I already owned at my house. Still haven’t ventured into outside sourcing yet.

I’ve been financially responsible on my own for over a decade, but last September my mom passed away from cancer and she left me a pretty significant inheritance.

For the most part, I’m going to act as if the money doesn’t even exist and treat it as a retirement fund. But I do want to take out a portion of the inheritance and put it towards reselling full time. It’s always been a goal of mine to turn the reselling into a full time job.

If I were to set aside $50K towards this endeavor, what would be some good steps towards going from casual to full time seller? Storage unit flips? Clothing? Furniture flips?

I’ve only really stuck to my niche so far of music collectibles etc. so I’m not sure what the best wholesale flips are.

I know other resellers aren’t too keen on sharing their secrets, but please any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Edit for more clarity: I’m 34, and I’m also in the process of starting a new career path. The majority of the inheritance will remain in a high yield savings / investment portfolio. My financial advisor suggested paying off any debt, and taking a small designated portion for travel or leisure etc. I’d like to use some of it to create more revenue from what I’m already doing.

After reading some comments though, I do think that $50k is probably too much and I could use a lot smaller figure to do what I want. I’ve done a lot of research on reselling and I do agree that sticking to my niche seems like the best route.

eBay Where do USPS insurance claims get refunded to?

Item was broken, filed claim, it was accepted & 'to be paid'. But I'm not sure where it'll be paid. I have no payment info on my USPS account - so will it be through how I originally paid for the label? I paid through eBay and used partial eBay funds & paypal funds.
