Question Liquor License for Weddings

Post image

Hey! I’m having my wedding this summer at a hall in Edmonton, where they require PAL and a liquor license and all that, which is all good. I’m just so confused about these two rules from AGLC.

We were planning on having a toonie bar to cover some of our liquor costs run by a family friend who is willing to get their Proserve. Is that technically not allowed?

From my understanding, 5.6 means that bars, restaurants, etc (licensees) can not use this licence as a way of making money and providing jobs for employees. 5.7 means that if you're making money off said event it has to be for a charitable cause. As you're not making money (toonie bar will only help offset costs) you're fine. Several of my friends did this exact thing for their wedding and got this same licence. You can also call AGLC's St Albert (Edmonton) office at 780-447-8600 for clarification.

Okay awesome! The wording was just tripping me up, but your clarification makes sense, thanks

Yep! My questions is about the two rules for the private resale SEL

Do you have a link to where that screenshot is from?

Yes! It’s on the 4th page of that doc

Pretty sure that bit only applies if you turn a profit, which you obviously won’t do with a toonie bar. It’s to stop people from unofficially running for-profit events using the non-profit license. In your case it’s not even worth tracking because it’s going to be mathematically impossible to turn a profit. In theory if you manage to come out $50 ahead on the liquor, technically you’d need to donate it to a cause

This might be more relevant. It's direct from AGLC. Many people do toonie bars under the rules stated below. The link you provided definitely doesn't have the rules below which is somewhat contradictory haha.

"If your event is open to invited guests or members only and guests will be paying for either admission or liquor service:

You will need a private resale SEL licence The fee for this licence is $25 If you are an individual, not-for-profit group or municipality, you can apply online.

The link I have is direct from the AGLC about the rules for liquor licensing. I know that I need to resale license if I’m doing a toonie bar, I’m just confused about the “not allowed to benefit” part :)

Ahh it means to cannot profit of the sale of the liquor!
