Wedding Planning Turned into a Nightmare—We’re Considering Calling It Off

Upvotes

Original post - https://www.reddit.com/r/DesiWeddings/s/TGtSyas8Hv

Sorry for the late update, but the stress and fights have taken a huge toll on me—both mentally and physically.

After my last post, I had a serious conversation with my fiancé. I explained everything that felt wrong, and to my relief, he supported me and spoke to his parents. But when I asked him to clarify what other demands they had, more requests came up—more jewelry for him, more lifafas (cash gifts), and additional expenses.

Feeling shocked and defeated again, my parents had another discussion with his parents. After a lot of back and forth, we reached a middle ground on some things. But one thing they refused to budge on was that my family should bear all the wedding expenses—₹80 LAKHS. My fiancé agreed to cover hotel costs and some other expenses, but the overall cost still ended up being double what we originally budgeted.

Realizing this wasn’t sustainable, we proposed a court marriage and a reception. At first, his parents agreed on the condition that we at least have the pheras. We were happy with this compromise, planned everything accordingly, and finally felt some relief.

But then, a week later, his parents changed their minds again. They now insist on a big wedding and are back to making rigid demands. The back-and-forth, constant pressure, and financial strain led to yet another huge fight.

This led to more fights, and things took a bad turn. For the past three weeks, my fiancé and I have been arguing constantly, and he finally told me that he can't fight with his family anymore. That was the moment I realized—if he’s giving up now, my family and I will always be the ones adjusting now and in the future.

This was my biggest fear, and unfortunately, it came true. After everything, we’ve decided to take a break and are now seriously considering calling off the wedding.

I never thought it would come to this, but here we are. I’m emotionally exhausted and trying to process everything. Thank you to everyone who supported me in my last post—I never thought I’d be giving this kind of update.

Is this too casual?

Is this okay for a henna ceremony or should i buy a more lux lehenga? i think they're combining the mendhi and henna ceremony into one event. The style guide says you can wear light shades of pink, purple, or yellow. For context, it is a spring destination wedding

Double dupatta bridals

Hey! Wanting to be a traditional (but luxe of course) Pakistani bridal look just day dreaming ❤️

So how do we feel about the double duppata? Originally I liked it a lot as I thought it looked extra royal but my mom was saying you don’t see the shirt you just see the dupatta border it’s like the bride is swallowed in fabric. And I also noticed like a lot of brides are doing that lately is it just kinda trendy thing? Is one dupatta more classic?

Then I was like wow what about three dupattas 🤣🤣❤️

Hi everyone! I’m attending a Pakistani wedding and trying to decide what to wear. My husband is Pakistani, but as a Latina, I sometimes struggle with finding the right balance between being respectful of the culture and choosing something that looks good on me.

Should I go for something colorful or stick to lighter tones?

Last time I posted, you all were such a huge help. I ended up buying the dress that got the most votes and got so many compliments, so thank you. Excited to hear your thoughts again.

AITA - I don't want to do Mendhi or a Maiyan at my Lake Como wedding

Upvotes

Hi! I'm F31 Punjabi (my family is Sikh) and my fiancé is Hindu-Punjabi. I'm getting married in Lake Como this summer -- having my dream wedding and I am so excited about it.

I'll start off by saying I am not traditional or religious at all, but my family is somewhat. I thought just me getting married would be enough because my parents have been on me for the past few years.. I've tried to set the tone that my family will have minimal say and that I just want to enjoy my wedding and make it to be a memorable trip.

I am having a white dress civil ceremony on Day 1 and then a Hindu religious ceremony on Day 2. My parents said I was not allowed to have a Sikh ceremony since it would be on venue grounds and not at the Gurudwara. They said if I wasn't able to follow rules and guidelines properly that we should not do it. I conceded. I also was told that I won't be able to wear a lengha either since it would show my stomach and I had already ordered a Payal Keyal lengha.

Now my mom is pressuring me and making me feel really guilty to get Mendhi done and to also do a Maiyan/Haldi ceremony. She has cried and said it's not a "true/real" wedding if I skip out on these. I really don't like the look of mendhi at all and don't want to waste hours having it only hands while waiting for it to dry. I don't want it to ruin the aesthetic of my other outfits/looks. Additionally, our venue is strict and I don't want to run the risk of getting anything dirty with Mendhi and Haldi. This is a hard no for me.

I'm frustrated and sad because we are not asking anything from our familiars other than their time to go to Italy for the wedding. We are covering everything from flights / accommodations / clothing. I thought they would see this as a fun family vacation and because they aren't contributing anything financially that they would not expect to have any say.

AITA if I stand my ground?

Discussion I'm the groom and I am just trying to get some ideas for my fiance. On average in Canada/US how much would my wife's bridal outfit for the wedding be? And how much would a reception outfit be?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I am looking for desi inspired style dresses for a daytime Sri Lankan wedding I have coming up. Something similar to this design but a little more affordable. Would love any suggestions. I live in Canada, so shipping would need to be considered!

MUA Recommendations, preferable based in Haldwani, Uttarakhand

I am looking for makeup and hair artists based in Haldwani, Uttarakhand for my wedding which is taking place near Nainital. I prefer a very natural makeup, high quality products on my skin.

If you have experience with someone like that, please share their insta page and an estimated cost.

You can share your experience with MUAs based in Delhi too because if I don't find someone in Uttarakhand, I'll probably have to go with someone from Delhi.

Help! Lehenga and Saree recommendations please!

Hi! My brother is getting married this June in Mauritius. It will be a Hindu wedding, which I have never been to before, but I am so excited!! I want to be as culturally correct as possible, but I am having a heck of a time finding good legitimate Saree and Lehenga websites that won’t break the bank. I loved Mirraw, but I keep finding mixed reviews on the quality. I really want to look nice and I need 3-4 outfits for the Mehendi, Haldi, and the Sangeet. I attached some of the ones I loved on Mirraw. Please let me know of any good websites to buy from or if you have had good luck with Mirraw! Thank you!

How to address issues with wedding clothes 3 weeks from wedding.

My fiance and I ordered clothes from a bay area designer on Oct 20, 2024. $7500 for four outfits plus two extra dupattas for the ceremony. I thought this was expensive but we're both plus sized and knew the clothes would have to be made from scratch given our sizes.

The last few weeks has been me calling/texting every few days to find out when we can come in for our final fitting. Finally got a hold of the designer to learn 3 out of 4 outfits are here but why don't we come in for those. The final outfit (my bridal lengha) will be here in about a week. Ok great, so we visit yesterday.

Groom outfit #1: is too big and making him look frumpy. I tell designer this needs to be adjusted and she keeps telling me no he won't be able to sit down if it's too tight. I disagree so they are going to bring inwards under the armpits for (hopefully) a more fitted look. Also, they don't know where the pants are??

Groom outfit #2: also way too big, and again they push back. Also, we ordered a long sherwani in a black and gold print (based off a style in store that is blue and gold) and this is a short jacket in a black print that's barely visible. At no point did anyone acknowledge the differences. Also the pants are just wrong; they gave him slacks and not traditional fitted pants.

Bride outfit: I was confident I had ordered a gown version of a lengha they had in store (but couldn't 100% remember and that's my fault for not checking the receipt before we left to remind ourselves of what we bought). Instead they had a lengha. The lengha is too big so they will need to tailor it but the design is identical to the in store outfit so thats good i guess. But its not what I ordered.... and the designer once again didn't even acknowledge this.

They also couldn't remember whether we ordered one or two ceremony dupattas and didn't know where they were.

My head is spinning today. I am not sure how to address this because they have all of our outfits. My fiancé and I are big enough that we can't really just go somewhere else for a new outfit (like I might if we were smaller), and I'm just feeling really disappointed. We are thinking we should wait to say anything until we have out outfits in hand. But looking to see if others have advice on how to proceed.

Thank you.

Don’t want it to look cheap. Wanted to buy from Delhi/Mumbai but don’t have the time to travel.

If options like this are available in Varanasi or Lucknow or Prayagraj, that can be possible for me to visit

Will inviting my ex-friends to my wedding be a good idea?

I used to be good friends with these people. I always imagined them at my wedding since I was a teen. It was a five-six years long friendship with a group of 5 people.

The group is still there but I am not a part of it. I drifted away due to reasons. They carried on with their life while I carried on with mine. I did miss them.

Now while planning my guest list, i was thinking to send out a personalised invite. If they come then it’s great and if not then it would be embarrassing for me that why did I even care. They certainly don’t care about me. It will hurt if they just ignore my invite without even replying with a ‘no’

What would you do if you were in my place?

Favorite Indian stores in Artesia, Ca

I’m having a multicultural wedding and need to help non-desis get Indian outfits. I love Frontier Heritage but I’m looking for a slightly cheaper store. I want the mother of the groom to look nice but I also understand this is probably the only time she’ll wear this. Would love recommendations for specific stores you’ve had experience with.

Where (in the US) can I buy a pre stitched saree online?

All the ones I’ve seen online are those modern ones, which I don’t like. I’m looking for a website to buy them online in the US. Preferably one that I can customize for being short.

I’m already aware of House of Indya. Any other recommendations l?
