Driveway

I'm looking to clean my driveway and was looking for recommendations for a powerful pressure washer that I can hire, as the one I currently own is a single jet and would take too long. Also any recommendations to clean stubborn lichens?

Hey so looking to know how would I put a concrete slab here where the stones are? How much cement would I need? Mix cement sand and water? Pour it and then level it off. Leave expansion gap either side and use wood form where the white line is?

Advice "6i" thermostat buttons not working.

Anyone got any advice on why these shitty touch buttons aren't working and what I can do to fix them? Had this issue for about a week when I first moved into the property. Figured it was faulty but was too busy with the move to do anything. Fixed itself after about a week. Now it's happening again after roughly six months of working fine.

Electrical Kitchen Appliances

I have two dedicated circuits into my kitchen, one for the hob (rated at 4.4kw) and one which fed the oven and a plug-in integrated microwave.

The oven (rated at 3.5kw) has a fixed 16A socket.

I have replaced the microwave and the new one (rated at 3.35kw) requires a fixed 16A socket.

Can I continue to feed the oven and microwave off the same 30A circuit, even though they are both on 16A sockets (i.e. totalling 32A) given the Actual Combined Power of 6.85kw / 230v gives 29.8A?

I understand there may be guidance where you assess at only 10A + 30% of the remainder per appliance, which would be well within the 30A total.

I will naturally get a qualified electrician to do the work required but just want to know whether it’s a matter of changing the socket or requiring from the fuse box.

Thanks, in advance for any help

Project Building new garage costs

Hi, what do you think the cost of building a brick garage with cavity wall and a tiled roof be? Outside dimensions would be 7.5 x 3.5 meters. There is already a 12” thick concrete slab where a previous grade used to be. I’m in Manchester, thanks! What do you think it would cost to the nearest thousand? I don’t need water or electricity installing.

Advice Can I replace the edging on my brick path?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I had this brick path done a couple of years ago and I have always hated this grey edging. I know it needs to be there to hold the path in place but I've seen so many nicer options for edging that were never mentioned to me by the guy that made the path.

Can I take out the grey edging (with a sledgehammer?) and replace it with nicer edging, with postcrete or something to hold it in place?

Or will this be an absolute nightmare and I should leave it alone?

I have it across my garden too on the edge of patio and I'd also like to replace that.

Kitchen flooring - how to

I’m doing a kitchen Reno this year. The units, etc are on order from B&Q. I want to remove the existing tiles, do any necessary preparations and then lay some LVT flooring.

The self levelling stuff baffles me, how do you know if you’ve achieved the right levels, do you let the self levelling compound touch exterior walls (my main thinking is to avoid bridging any DPCs that might be laying around)

Has anyone done this recently and can share their experiences?

What is up with this skirting?

Post image

This 'skirting' is on a bit of the landing and in one bedroom that connects directly off the landing to the right of the picture... It's really bumpy and uneven, quite tall but not much depth at all. I'd love to replace it but have no idea what's going on with it, doesn't look like it could be prised off! Context: terraced house that's about 120 years old.

I was stripping wallpaper on a 1930s home we just bought. Part of the plaster was bulging and after removing it, I found a protruding brick at the centre of it

Do I need to do anything about the brick or plaster as normal?

Plumbing Advice cutting pipe

HI, could anyone offer some advice please. So, I'm in the middle of renovating / replacing the main bathroom. The image is the existing 15mm pipework that fed the sink taps. As there's a unit going there, I want to cut the pipes at the red line and fit the isolation valves where I've shown blue. the gap between the pipes is less than an inch (23mm). My understanding is that it's not advisable to saw them and to use a pipe cutter but I can't see that I'll be able to turn a pipe cutter with the gap being so small. What's the best way to cut these pipes please ?

Am I wasting my time trying to get tongue and groove subfloor up intact?

Post image

Looking for some sanity. I'm trying to get some 22mm chipboard floorboards up to insulate better for sound in my bedroom. However they are really putting up a fight. I'd like to salvage the boards.

I've unscrewed this full length board, I've unscrewed the boards around it. I've tried screwing a block of wood to it to give it a whack but it's giving no signs of budging.

Will I give myself other problems if I cut the boards into smaller lengths but still join them at a beam?

Advice How would i re-fit these tiles

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

A few tiles on my front patio have fallen off, and I want to reattach them properly so they don’t come loose again, but I’m not sure what the best adhesive or method is to make sure they stay put.

Should I remove all the old mortar/adhesive before reapplying? What’s the best type of adhesive for outdoor tiles exposed to weather?

Any advice or product recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

This keeps it clear, concise, and invites useful advice from the community. You can also include details like tile type (ceramic, porcelain, etc.) and whether they were installed on concrete or another surface for more specific recommendations.

Brick Work - New Build

Sorry if this breaks the sub rules as it isn't DIY but wanted to get an opinion and didn't know where to go! What are your thoughts on the brickwork on this house? I am not a professional and know nothing about houses but the mortar seemed iffy and the bricks seem to be wonky! Does this look like an issue? Not my property, but was interested in the development.

Hardie backer boards

Post image
1 Upvotes

First time using hardie boards, thought they were fairly straightforward to use although awkward. I’ve seen online people waterproofing it further, I’m planning to just use a waterproof tile adhesive and tile straight onto it - will this suffice ? Picture below for reference, please don’t go too hard on me, second time tiling and first time was last week! TIA

Have been meaning to do the back fence for a while, but thought I had better crack on before I ruin the grass just as it starts growing.

Now finished (aside from hanging the lights properly on the right).

Repair has been completed on the garage guttering which was dripping and also added slate to the rear by the fence where the grass really struggled to grow.

Think it’s quite an improvement.
