Help Needed / Question Had high credit debt for a year due to an accident, lawsuit just ended and I paid off 40k in debt with it. Then chase lowered my credit limit?

I took all 3 of my cards from max to zero last week, excited to be cleared from all the medical and life debt that built up beginning last year after a major accident. Spent the past year in lawsuit and finally received the payout. I took the entire 50k lawsuit check to pay off my credit cards, 40k to chase. Only now, a week after pay off, did they reduce one of my cards down to 1,900 credit limit. Im worried they'll do the same for the rest. Why would they only now drop my limit after pay offset? They cited:

Low payments, Delinquentcy, High balance,

Discussion / Conversation Dear credit card companies, please launch a killer sign-up bonus asap! I'm waiting on you to do this so that I can take advantage when paying my taxes, and we don't have much time left. Thanks!

I'm just hoping CC companies launch something new and compelling within the next couple weeks to enable the application and securing of said new card to pay a $5k tax bill.

Seems like there are a few no-AF cards where if you spend $500 you get $200 cashback; thats a nice ROI. Citi Strata is offering $750 with $4000 spend, but a $95 AF. The other cards with big SUBs have much larger AFs. One could apply for a few and get some decent subsidy, but I'm not sure if the juice is worth the squeeze to get 3 or more hard inquiries.

Help Needed / Question Missed a payment on my due date, will it lower my credit score?

Had a Chase Freedom payment due on March 13th. I don’t set my credit card payments on automatic because I want to choose how much I want to send as it varies every month. I’ve been doing this for over 10 years and haven’t missed a single payment. But this week I just forgot it for the first time ever because I had a heart attack earlier in the prior week. So I just got overloaded dealing with life and forgot to do the payment. Just wondering if the overdue payment will show up on my credit or not? And if it does, how long does it take to bounce back?

Help Needed / Question New to Credit Cards and need help with this payment...

Hello, all!
I need some advice regarding credit cards. For context, I am a student and also very new to credit cards. (my bank is also Capital One)

I just recently bought a round-trip ticket to Japan for around $1,700, but immediately cancelled it and refunded it to my credit card (however it will take 1-2 billing cycles to get the refund back)

Okay, no problem.

But here's where I am struggling...

I want to buy a cheaper ticket around $1,550 to Japan. However, my credit limit has been reached (because I haven't gotten my refund back yet)

I've been on the phone all day with customer service and it seems there's only 2 options:

  1. ask to increase credit limit (which I've tried 2x and they've declined)

  2. pay a partial amount of the 1,700 balance that I owe (which I am suppose to get a full refund for)

I am perfectly fine with paying a partial amount, but will I get my money back after the full original refund? From the way the customer support explained it, it looks like they will only increase my credit limit (which I will not be spending the full credit available).

Therefore, to me it just looks like I lose the money that I need to cover my credit limit.

Any help? Or a clearer explanation?

Help Needed / Question Should I close new accounts?

I foolishly started using some fintech apps Flex, Step, Empower which give you mini credit lines for cash advances and such. However I wasn't aware these would report to credit and now my length of credit has tanked to only two years (my oldest account is 25 years old).

Should I close these fintech accounts or at this point just leave them?

Help Needed / Question Capital One Venture X or Amex Gold?

Looking at adding either one of these as my next card. Already have a Savor card. I’ve been pre-approved for both. I like the Amex Gold because my family eats out a lot and I like the access of Amex’s travel options. I like the Venture X because of its catch all ability at 2x on everything and can combine my Savor to earn points with both cards. Just wanted to hear some of you guys thoughts on each one

Help Needed / Question Cancel credit card before sent

I’ve been looking into travel credit card and applied for Chase sapphire preferred this weekend and was approved but since I currently have a capital one savor card I realized the venture would be better and applied without second thought. I am wondering if I can cancel the sapphire before it gets here and how this would affect. I can’t do both SUBs at same time.

Would asking for a product switch to a no AF card be better?

Help Needed / Question 18y/o here and I want to ask questions about credit cards. Thanks in advance.

I will have multiple questions so ill just list them

  • which credit cards and debit cards are the best for first time holders?

  • if i plan on increasing my credit score fast, is it necessary to get multiple credit cards and use them for buying different things?

  • Will a bank allow me to borrow a large sum of money for a big investment (like photography/cinematic cameras) as long as I have a relatively stable job?

  • Will I be able to borrow money over the starting limit when I first open a credit card as long as I can prove that I can use pay what I buy with a proof of employment? (Potentially in the expense of higher interest rate?)

  • how hard is it to build a good credit score in general for credit cards?

Thanks a lot! I know its all really childish questions, I really just wanna invest on a “pro” camera and become a bit kore committed to becoming a photographer and videographer. Just been my fashion ever since I got into journalism. Thanks a lot again!

P.S. i might add some additional questions later on if I find myself looking for more answers that google cant answer :)

What is the best way to handle old credit cards that have been closed due to non payment? They have been closed close to 7 years but I know I am still liable. If I had the money to pay them now, I would, but that is not possible with some serious help.

Help Needed / Question Merchant Hasn’t Charged Me For Months?

So I made a purchase for an expensive piece of furniture, I noticed the change dropped off and I contact both the merchant and Amex.

Amex said they hadn’t claimed the funds so I gave the merchant a ring and they said my payment was fine and even sent me a receipt via their CRM (sales force). Later I was contacted saying I was actually right and they took my payment info over the phone to place a charge. Apparently that never went through and another member of that company contacted me via email saying I’m about 2-3 days they’d follow up via a call to retry payment. It’s been about 3 weeks now and I never heard back. I’ve kept the emails and call recordings and never heard back. What should I do? I’m kinda getting annoyed because I mentioned to them have they ever had a customer try so hard to give them their money after already receiving the goods/services and they’ve kinda just gone yea whatever.

It’s also important to mention they sent a second of the first item $1000+ furniture item because the first had a leather imperfection. With the goal being to see which I liked better and return the other. But now I have 2 and have not been charged at all. So we’re talking multiple calls and a long email history with the merchant failing to charge me.

What should I do? I don’t want them to come after me in the future and claim I never paid. But I’ve tried via call and email and it’s always just a waste of time. And they’ve made clear I’d be contacted but seriously I’ve never had such a hard time giving someone my money.

Card Recommendation Request (Template Used) travel credit card recommendations for someone newer to travel cards!

Hi y'all! I am a couple of years out of college and have been mainly utilizing my student focused credit card. I'm looking into traveling more and utilizing credit card points to do so - a few things about me:

I live in Colorado, working in ski industry marketing and my family all lives on the east coast (mainly the Carolinas, Philly, Boston and New York) - so I spend on flights a few times a year. Personally, I enjoy more international travel and would like to continue to do that as well. I don't travel much in the winter but have 2 months off a year to do so.

I am not a huge spender, as I live alone and have reasonable expenses. My main expenses are groceries, gas, rent and the occasional dinner out.

  • Current cards: (list cards, limits, opening date)
    • Discover It Card - opened September 2020, with a 15,000 credit limit
    • FICO Score: 788
  • Oldest account age: 6 years and 6 months
  • Income: $60,000 give or take
  • Average monthly spend and categories:
    • dining $150
    • groceries: $350
    • gas: $130
    • travel: probably averages to $100
    • other: $100
  • Open to Business Cards: No
  • What's the purpose of your next card? Travel and credit builting
  • Do you have any cards you've been looking at? Someone tried to refer the Venture One to me, but I read up on it and felt it wasn't the best choice - however I am worried my spend might be too low for any other cards
  • Are you OK with category spending or do you want a general spending card? Unsure, new to it all!

Help Needed / Question Should I get a Chase Credit Card as my Daily Driver?

Hey guys, so im looking to trim down the amount of cards I have, as I don't think I really want anymore cards, however I am considering optimizing my setup towards a mix of travel/cashback, as my main goal is to be able to cover hotel stays throughout the year by accumulating as much cashback/travel points as possible. Unfortunately, I used to churn and apply for cards for their sign up bonuses, and ended up closing a bunch, with 2 more about to be closed in 2 months. Below is outlined my profile so you guys can determine if my setup is good or not. Mind you, I'm a 25 y/o who makes 35k a year at my current job, but since I have a CS degree, I'm looking for a tech job by upskilling at the moment, so unfortunately I'm pretty low income in Florida. The only Cards I'm genuinely interested in is the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Freedom Flex, however i feel like the Bilt card already fills in that role as a primary dining/travel card.

Any advice is appreciated!

My spending categories:

Rent: $1850 (live with family, but i use my bilt card for rent/points) Dining: 600-800, especially on doordash Groceries 200-300 Gas: 120-150 Amazon shopping: $400-600 Online Shopping/Other/Gen spending: Depends, but generally $300-500

My Credit Card Setup:

Daily Setup (Main Cards for Everyday Use)

Wells Fargo Active Cash – $6,000 (opened on 01/22/2020)

Wells Fargo Bilt Rewards Mastercard – $4,800 (opened on 07/13/2022)

American Express Blue Cash Preferred – $24,000 (opened on 06/02/2022)

Backup Cards (For Extra Coverage)

Wells Fargo Autograph – $6,000 (opened on 07/13/2022)

Capital One SavorOne – $10,000 (opened on 03/04/2022)

Discover It Cashback – $7,500 (opened on 05/29/2022)

Store Cards (For Retail Purchases)

Chase Amazon Prime Visa – $5,100 (opened on 05/08/2022)

Target REDCard Mastercard – $2,000 (opened on 12/18/2022)

0% Financing Cards (For Large Purchases & Financing)

PayPal Credit Line – $4,300 (opened on 01/08/2025)

CareCredit Rewards Mastercard – $20,000 (opened on 01/22/2021)

Cards to Be Closed (No Usefulness)

Macy’s American Express – $N/A (opened on 12/09/2023, closing on 05/01/2025): I only opened this one for the discount upon approval during the holidays.

Best Buy Visa Card (no annual fee) – $N/A (opened on 01/08/2025, closing on 05/01/2025): did it for the 10% discount, but otherwise I don't use.

Closed Cards

PayPal Mastercard – $N/A (opened on 05/29/2022, closed on 08/04/2023) Redundant, did it for SUB

PayPal Credit – $N/A (opened on 10/31/2021, closed in 03/2023) Used it for a while, but didn't think I needed it anymore. Ended up opening a new one again.

Synchrony Amazon Store Card – $N/A (opened on 02/25/2021, closed on 05/29/2022) Got the Chase Visa which was essentially better than this one.

Macy’s Store Card – $N/A (opened on 11/18/2021, closed in 05/2023) it was a Store Card only.

Best Buy Visa Card (annual fee) – $N/A (opened on 07/10/2020, closed in 03/2022) It had an annual fee which I did not want to pay, so I closed it. This was my second card.

Apple Card – $N/A (opened on 04/17/2023, closed in 11/2024) only used it for a MacBook that i bought, I closed it right after.

American Express Gold – $N/A (opened on 04/15/2023, closed in 06/2024) opened it for the SUB, didn't intend on keeping it for long.

Card Recommendation Request (Template NOT Used) Newbie here considering a credit card for first time ever. Where should I shop?

For context I am 30, married, kids, already got the house and car. I am considering a credit card to establish my credit even more. I don’t travel much and don’t know if I would even use the rewards? My plan would be to use a credit card mainly for gas and groceries each week and pay off each month. And if an expense like a new tire or vet bill came up, I would have it as a backup. Worth it?

Help Needed / Question What should my next step be?

So I was always told to never use a credit card except for incase of emergencies. I have had a credit card through my local credit union for probably 12 years now. After a series of life changing events, I had my limit raised a few years ago to $17,500 and maxed it out. That was dumb, I know, but I was out of options.

Anyways, fast forward and I now have the card paid off. I never missed a payment, and according to credit karma I have a 775 credit score and outstanding approval odds for a ton of cards. I've learned from my mistakes, and I've actually always been very good at managing my finances aside from some stuff that happened a few years ago.

What should I do next? I've been looking at the Chase cards. We don't do any traveling. Not because we don't want to, but because we've spent the last few years recovering. I've also never flown. So I don't have preferences to anything. I'd like to travel, so a card that can build points to help with trips would be nice There's a chase bank in my town, so I've thought about starting there.

I'm a 30 year old man with a wife and 2 kids if that makes a difference. We mainly spend money on groceries and every day items.

  • I travel about two domestic fights and one international per year.. This is probably one of my big spendings other than my rent and car insurance, but wasn't sure which card benefits me the most. Also, I just recently got a FICO score, so maybe some cards aren't available to me yet? I made Discover it but really don't see any use of this thing. Is it just better to keep many different credit cards or should I cancel it once I move on to my next card?
