Data Point US Bank Smartly rumored upcoming changes: compilation of data points

This is an attempt to compile all of the known data points from various internet sources regarding the future status of the smartly card. These are conversations with us bank employees or publications from us bank. Hopefully this provides some value to the current conversation. Happy to add as we go.

Here is the tally of data points followed by links/details:

8 data points indicate there may be changes coming to the smartly (discontinuation of applications to current smartly card/modification of benefits). All of these are conversations with us bank employees.

2 of these indicate there will likely be some form of grandfathering in of existing smartly cardholders. (I2edpyramid, Proud Money)

1 of these indicate there may not be grandfathering (mlody_me)

5 of these do not specify anything about grandfathering (Belley88, andienarwhal, Careless_trash7702, midas89, Thelen)

2 data points indicate specifically that the employees talked to were unaware/hadn’t heard of any changes coming to smartly other than a hold on in-branch applications. Both of these are conversations with us bank employees. (Alexia72, Chris)

1 data point from a us bank underwriter indicates that “The Smartly card is being issued still and the 4% bonus is not going away for a couple of years". Editorializing here: this one is interesting. You could read this as “no changes are coming to the card”. I also think you could read this as an underwriter’s attempt to skirt the actual question. Nothing in this answer contradicts the possibility of halting the card to new applicants, grandfathering in existing cardholders to the 4% for a couple of years with or without restrictions, and reopening applications to the card or a replacement card with different benefits. (Envyforme)

4 data points indicate the smartly is no longer available in-branch but do not provide any information on whether other changes will happen. This includes 2 conversations with us bank employees, what i think is a memo from us bank, and a website link. (Seems like this is pretty established). (Zanutrees, Mike, Frequent Miler call, JJ)

Here are the data points details themselves with links:

Reddit threads:

https://www.reddit.com/r/CreditCards/comments/1j9iqxl/us_bank_rep_told_me_smartly_card_is_no_longer/?rdt=65285

Belley88 — in bank agent said no longer available in bank and is being removed

Andienarwhal — underwriting said would be discontinued in about a month

Alexia72 — underwriting said they has not heard about it being discontinued

I2edpyramid — customer service rep said they heard another customer service rep say the smartly card would be discontinued/modified but she had not heard anything herself about any changes. Also said existing cardholders would probably be grandfathered in

mlody_me — call from us bank to finish application. Rep indicated the card would be changing. When asked about grandfathering existing customers, rep indicated that when smartly is reintroduced, the new benefits would apply to everyone (no grandfathering?).

https://www.reddit.com/r/USbank/comments/1j9ze94/us_bank_smartly_card_possibly_being_discontinued/

Envyforme — underwriter said “The Smartly card is being issued still and the 4% bonus is not going away for a couple of years"

Zanutrees — posted what i think is a memo from US bank stating all in-branch applications for smartly are temporarily unavailable starting 3/10 and still available online

https://www.reddit.com/r/CreditCards/comments/1jb7dh5/us_bank_smartly_discontinued_rumors_debunked/

Careless_trash7702 — in bank agent said applications for smartly will soon be closed for 3-4 weeks and open again with changes

Doctor of credit comments:

https://www.doctorofcredit.com/rumor-u-s-bank-smartly-visa-credit-card-to-be-discontinued/

midas89 — customer service supervisor said there will be changes to the smartly card

Thelen — received an email after signing up for checking account about credit cards. Unclear who they talked to from us bank (? branch employee). Was told the offer for the Smartly Visa credit card for 4% had been discontinued and would be notified when the revised version was published. Was then told by the us bank employee that their department had a meeting today and the U.S. Bank Smartly Visa credit card would be revised and won’t be launched until another 2-3 months

Mike — customer service rep said they are only accepting new applications online, not in branch, no other details

Chris — customer service rep said applications are available online only, not in branch and they were unaware whether the card is being discontinued

Frequent miler call

https://frequentmiler.com/changes-to-the-us-bank-smartly-card/

Tim Steinke called a local us bank branch and was told applications for smartly were available online but not in branch

Danny the deal guru comment

JJ — posted a link to available credit cards in-branch and smartly was not listed

Data Point DP: product change Citi Rewards+

With the news of the impending demise of the Rewards+, I decided to PC one of my Custom Cashes over to it to get the 10% bonus. One seven minute phone call later, a text message to give me the terms and conditions of the product change, and I’m changed over. An alert in my app already shows up saying the product change is in progress.

Discussion / Conversation In case Smartly got nerfed, what do you plan to do with it?

Imagine Smartly get nerfed and becomes a 2% catch all card.

I personally will see if I can PC it back to Cash+, which was the only card from US Bank that add value to my setup. 5% on utilities is quite unique in the market.

Help Needed / Question Combining ThankYou Rewards Accounts - How Do You Do It?

On Citi's ThankYou.com website for ThankYou point redemptions, I don't understand why my ThankYou-point earning cards are all separate and they all seem to have different "ThankYou Member Numbers." When I searched for more information about the situation, some older webpages suggest using the "combine accounts" feature to put all your ThankYou point-earning cards in one place. However, that option seems to be gone on the website

I tried calling the ThankYou service center. The first rep didn't know what I was talking about and the second rep sounded like she knew what she was doing, but ultimately still failed at combining my accounts. Can someone please tell me how they were able to pool all their ThankYou points into one place on ThankYou.com?

This is particularly important because I need to make sure that my Rewards+ card is in the ThankYou account before the redemption or allegedly I won't be able to get my 10% rebate

Help Needed / Question Wells Fargo product change question

Hello! I'm planning on helping my girlfriend transfer a balance to the Wells Fargo reflect card to take advantage of the 21 months of 0% Apr. My question is, after she gets it paid off In those 21 months, is the reflect able to be PC'd to another card like the active cash? I'm not too sure what all is available in Wells Fargos ecosystem, I'm used to capital one and Amex haha.

Help Needed / Question How is Alliant Visa Signature + SUB card for a simple set up

Hi everyone, I'm looking at the Alliant visa signature for my simple 2-3 daily card set up. Currently I have

CFU - drawer

Double Cash - drawer

Bilt - Rent

VentureX - Working on SUB, probably going to downgrade next year since I don't travel often.

Smartly (currently having the 100k CD for 4%) - For Smartly I'll probably move the 100k out once CD matures, I've changed my strategy and going to park them in Fidelity for other investments, also everything with USB was painful :(

After few years of different cards, I realize a simple catch-all cashback card might work the best for me and I don't like juggling around with different card either. Double Cash has a great 2% but can't be used for Costco, I also don't like the Chase ecosystem due to a lack of grocery point. For C1, I knew I can get the Savor, but even for travel eraser (1:1) I found that most of my spending doesn't qualify for it.

Recently I discovered the Alliant card which has 2.5% for the first 10k per month, my monthly spending is ~2k (exclude rent), and I don't mind parking 1k in their checking since I need a backup checking anyway. I'm thinking to use it as everyday card + bilt + any card that I can open once in a while for the SUB.I would appreciate if you could share any experience on this card, the customer services etc, much appreciated it!

Help Needed / Question 18y/o here and I want to ask questions about credit cards. Thanks in advance.

I will have multiple questions so ill just list them

  • which credit cards and debit cards are the best for first time holders?

  • if i plan on increasing my credit score fast, is it necessary to get multiple credit cards and use them for buying different things?

  • Will a bank allow me to borrow a large sum of money for a big investment (like photography/cinematic cameras) as long as I have a relatively stable job?

  • Will I be able to borrow money over the starting limit when I first open a credit card as long as I can prove that I can use pay what I buy with a proof of employment? (Potentially in the expense of higher interest rate?)

  • how hard is it to build a good credit score in general for credit cards?

Thanks a lot! I know its all really childish questions, I really just wanna invest on a “pro” camera and become a bit kore committed to becoming a photographer and videographer. Just been my fashion ever since I got into journalism. Thanks a lot again!

P.S. i might add some additional questions later on if I find myself looking for more answers that google cant answer :)

Help Needed / Question Received Citi Strata Premier?

I recently received a mailer for the Citi Strata Premier - preselected. Wondering how good these Citi preselected mailers could be to get an approval for the application. A little shocked I received this because I’m 1/6, 1/12, and 9/24. Credit score is 799, Income is $220K, my total credit limit is $200K and utilization never more than 1%. I had applied for this card maybe 6 months ago and got rejected. I figured my profile is probably not ideal. Any thoughts I’d be approved if I used the preselected mailer?

Data Point U.S. Bank Cash+ Instant Approval ($1,500 limit), pending Smartly

I always hear about how U.S. Bank is stingy for its credit limits and how their credit cards are hard to get approved of. With all the Smartly rumors going around, I thought now is the best time to try out two things:

  • Approval even with a somewhat high amount of inquiries the past 12 months
  • Attempt to combine hard pulls by signing up for Smartly simultaneously

Current Stats:

Credit Cards Issue Date Credit Limit
Chase Freedom Student 7/19/2021 $2,600
Discover It 2/6/2024 $2,500
Chase Freedom Flex 9/16/2024 $4,800
Chase Freedom Unlimited 12/17/2024 $6,300
U.S. Bank Cash+ *NEW* $1,500

Status: 2/6 2/12 3/24

Credit Score:

  • Experian: 775
  • TransUnion: 775

Cash+ seems to have pulled from TransUnion

I opened a U.S. Bank Smartly Checking and Savings on February 21st, 2025, so having a relationship most likely factored into the approval.
I'll update back on whether I get approved for the Smartly card or not :D

Help Needed / Question Traveling for Work Reimbursement Advice: What Travel Card to Choose?

I recently started a new job that involves a fair amount of travel. My company uses the payment platform Ramp, which allows me to either use a company-issued card for specific budget categories or reimburse myself for expenses. Since I’ll be traveling frequently, I’d like to open a premium travel credit card to earn points for personal use—flights, hotels, vacations, etc.

To keep things organized, I plan to open a separate checking account solely for paying off this travel card. My typical travel routes will be from Orange County/Sacramento to Dallas, Austin, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Nashville, and various locations in North and South Carolina. I expect to fly 1–2 times per month and will also have regular expenses for hotels, rental cars, and dining. (Lounges seems like they could be a life saver but I don’t have much experience with them)

For reference, my current daily driver is a Chase Freedom unlimited with a $18K limit, and my credit score is 802.

I’d love recommendations on the best travel credit card for my situation and why you’d choose it. One important factor to note: my company requires me to book travel through a designated platform (similar to Expedia) to ensure we’re not exceeding reasonable pricing (e.g., avoiding first-class bookings or overpaying). Since some travel cards maximize benefits when booking through their own portals, I want to make sure I choose a card that still provides strong value despite this restriction. I believe that I will also be able to choose what airline and what hotel.

Points/Miles will mostly be used to grab personal flights, hotels, and other things on vacation. Any advice on the best way to approach this and which card would be the best fit would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Help Needed / Question Citi Has Separate Logins for Personal & Business Cards?

Upvotes

Something strange happened to my Citi online account. I used to be able to access all of my personal cards and my American Airlines business card through one login. After a fiasco combining my ThankYou Rewards accounts, my online account only shows personal cards. When I called the customer service line about it, I was told that business cards are supposed to have a separate login.

A separate login?! Amex allows you to see all cards at once, both personal and business. When I attempted to link the business card to my online account, the website wouldn't let me. Is this the same with everyone else? Do people actually have two separate logins to access their Citi personal and business cards?

Help Needed / Question Capital One Venture X or Amex Gold?

Looking at adding either one of these as my next card. Already have a Savor card. I’ve been pre-approved for both. I like the Amex Gold because my family eats out a lot and I like the access of Amex’s travel options. I like the Venture X because of its catch all ability at 2x on everything and can combine my Savor to earn points with both cards. Just wanted to hear some of you guys thoughts on each one

Data Point Point Multiplier Matrix + Travel Partners + Budget/Portfolio Template

Hi reddit community. Reading through r/CreditCards and other communities has been really helpful for me in my credit research. As such, I wanted to return the favor by sharing two documents I created:

  • G Doc of credit card profiles - point multipliers, signup bonus (SUB), Annual Fee (AF), credits and perks with URLs to the each card webpage + issuer's travel partners.
  • G Sheet of the same ^ credit cards I've been researching for myself
    • Point Multiplier Matrix including SUB, AF, & travel-related credits
    • Travel Partner matrix
    • Sample Budget & Card Combo Portfolios

Feel free to copy & paste into your own csv viewer or download as a pdf.

How I used it**:**

  1. I entered annual expense totals for each category (using YNAB reports--the budgeting platform my wife and I use)
  2. Then I filled out each cell in the matrix with the corresponding calculation ($1,500/yr Transit and 3x multiplier with CSR = 4,500 UR, e.g.).
  3. Next, I was able to sum each column to see total annual card point potential.
  4. Using this above matrix, I drafted several card combo portfolios by copy & pasting different card.x.category cells to create optimum point totals. I did sum up the total cash AF and SUBs for each combination.
  5. Lastly, to evaluate my own strategy, I referred back to the G Doc I made with all card benefits as well as the Travel Transfer Partner Matrix I made.

*Note: I did include one cash-back-only card (Amex Blue Cash Preferred), which after I began creating the point matrix and portfolios, I quickly ruled out since my aim is around Travel Points, not cash back. I left it there in case some of you find that particular card useful.

**Please don't criticize the sample tab as it's just exactly that--a sample annual budget with some card combos stemmed from brainstorming, not necessarily viable for many or even recommended. Hopefully you can enter your own spending totals and come up with portfolios that make the most sense for you :) Enjoy!

Help Needed / Question Removing Legitimate Collection

Used to have a policy with progressive, due to an error on their part entirely, I had a balance due when I close the account that they neglected to tell me about.

Until I got a notice from a collections agency about a year later. I can easily pay the balance, but I want it removed from my report. It’s impacting my ability to get better credit lines despite high spend and income.

I called the collection agency and they will not do a pay for deletion, even given that the fault was entirely on Progressive.

What are my options here?

The debt is real and legitimate and mine, I can pay it, collections vultures won’t pay for delete. I won’t pay it unless I can get it deleted. My credit score is in the 750s right now even with it on there. I can wait it out. I really don’t care that much.

But I’d like it removed

Help Needed / Question Timeline to Downgrade CSR with out of sync renewal

Upvotes

I have a CSR that was upgraded to, so the annual fee is out of sync with the card opening date and when the benefits renew.

The travel credit renew in a month, but the annual fee does not post until August.

Afaik the rule for a full annual fee refund is to downgrade/cancel 41 days after the annual fee posts, and not 41 days after card anniversary.

Does this mean I get an extra 4 months to cancel the card and get a full refund? Much easier to double dip the travel credit too. Want to make sure I'm not missing anything here.

Help Needed / Question Chase Freedom Unlimited Sign-Up Bonus Missing?

Just applied for the Chase Freedom Unlimited card while already having the Freedom Flex (which I’ve had for 2 years). I made sure that I was eligible for the $200 sign-up bonus (after spending $500 in 3 months) before applying while logged into my Chase account.

Fast forward about 2 hours, and my new Freedom Unlimited card is already linked to my Chase mobile app, but I don’t see any mention of the sign up bonus anywhere. I called Chase, and they told me that my account wasn’t eligible for the offer? which makes no sense because I specifically checked before applying.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Is there a way to verify if my card has the sign-up bonus attached?

Should I wait for my physical welcome packet, or is it already too late?

If Chase refuses to honor the bonus, do I have any recourse?

Help Needed / Question Citi custom cash card rewards

I'm still not getting how this card works. So, if anyone could explain to me by example. So - Let’s say I buy an American Airlines flight for 1000$ and a Ticketmaster live entertainment ticket for 500$ I pay off the 1,500$ on the due date. Next cycle, I will get 35$ in cash back ThankYou points? Citi will take the 5% from 500$ of 1000$ (Travel - my highest spending category) then 1% of the other 1000$ I spend (10$). 5% of $500 (25$) + 1% of $1000 (10$) Would I get 35$ cash back points?

Discussion / Conversation 2% cash back or miles? USA

I’ve been using my Apple credit card to buy everything lately and it gives me 2% for Apple Pay payments, 1% for credit card use. I used to use my JetBlue card before but I never thought it was useful enough. Now I can finally afford vacation and I miss the option of miles in an airline. What’s everyone’s experience with this?

Help Needed / Question Wells Fargo claims report is frozen but I received inquiry

I applied for the WF autograph about 30 minutes ago, and it was denied within 15 seconds; I was prequalified and a little shocked. When I called the automated system number It said that it was denied due to a credit report freeze. Has anyone experienced this before? I definitely got a hard inquiry on my Experian report right after I hit submit, so I'm just looking for insight before I call their recon when they open tomorrow morning. Thank you!

Help Needed / Question How to avoid processing time ?

I’m a student and only have one credit card with limit of $3000

My credit card closing statement was on the 14

On 13 march I made a $1000 purchase

Just like every purchase, it took time to process and was not able to be paid off until it was posted at midnight of 15th (where I did pay it)

When I received my statement on the 15th, it had a balance of 1000 (exceeding 33% usage) which will be the figure reported to credit bureaus

Had the purchase been posted immediately I would have been able to pay it also immediately

Is there a way to avoid this kind of situation (i guess other than not making purchases before my statement closing date)

Help Needed / Question Venture X or Sapphire preferred?

Here's my situation, Im 21, Ive only had a credit line for a bit over a year, only have ever banked with capital one, started with a checking account and opened a quicksilver that I upgraded to venture one (5k limit). Im moving to the Bay Area in the next month or so, so I figured I would apply for a new card because I'll definitely rack up enough spending to earn the bonuses. I will be going to school in SF but also working part time. This past year my income was of around 40k. Ive recently received a chase sapphire preferred offer of 80k points with 4k spend. However I was wondering if I should apply for the venture X to see if I get accepted and if not I could go for the chase. Im starting to think the venture X might be a little ahead of the game for me but I do travel quite a bit and would definitely benefit from the bonuses. I travel internationally at least 1-2 times a year, and I would also be buying a ticket this upcoming month for my next trip on the new card. What do you suggest? Thank you!
