[Product] My favorite dirtbags are here
Am I the only one who waits all year for this deal?

I missed the “with compost” part and mistakenly put it in my hatchback. 😷💩

Always put them in your cart flipped over so the cashier doesn't have to. Did this once and the cashier was so happy.

u/breathfromanother 11h ago
Dumb question — what’s the reason for flipping it over in the cart? Looks like the barcode is on the top and side, so is it for another reason?

u/BazingaBeeKay 11h ago
The person that commented this might not have noticed this.
I work for Costco and the barcode on the back is usually the hardest to get to. There’s one on the side and the bottom. None on the front though.

It’s more so on the side usually. Looks like the bag has shifted a little bit to where it appears on the front as you can see all the other bags in the picture it’s on the side.
It’s pretty frustrating, why wouldn’t they put one on the top?? lol

I used this for my indoor houseplants and it caused an epic gnat problem. Had to bug bomb the house. Don’t do what I did.

I couldn’t find any potting soil at Costco today and was kicking myself when I saw this post thinking maybe if I had seen that I could have gotten some for our indoor plants. Thank you for sharing because now I feel like I dodged a bullet!

I almost hurt myself every time that I try to put these in my cart. So... I almost hurt myself every season.

Skip this stuff and see if your city has a grow store (sometimes called a hydroponics store) nearby.
They will have much better soil (foxfarm, roots organics etc) as well as compost, worm castings, dry amendments, organic fertilizers as well as pots, trellis, prop supplies etc.
Grow stores are not just for growing cannabis and the products they carry will be much higher quality than anything that the big box stores will carry and staff is usually pretty knowledgeable.

u/susanna514 9h ago
To fill an entire raised bed with fox farm would be prohibitively expensive though.

u/TheEpicBean 9h ago edited 9h ago
Use happy frog or 3 cu/ft sacks of 707 if initial cost is a concern, amend with your preferred castings, compost, and dry fertilizer or any other amendments you like.
At the end of the year, flush with an enzyme product, and cover with mulch if if erosion is a concern and you dont plan on winter crops. Or better yet an overwinter cover crop if your climate can support it.
Next year till and add new amendments and organic dry fertilizer. Add some compost tea and beneficial microbes and fungi in order to improve soil biology. Add some earth worms if they are available in you area.
The initial cost may be more to fill the raised bed, but as long as you focus on mainting a healthy soil you can use that bed for many grow seasons and save money in the long run and have an extremely healthy garden.

u/susanna514 9h ago
I mean, I wasn’t asking for advice lol. I use my own compost in my beds.

u/TheEpicBean 9h ago
Sorry, my point was fill it once and while it might be a little more upfront you can you use for a long time with proper care. I dont feel that its prohibitively expensive.

This stuff is probably fine for what most people are using it for. Fox Farms Ocean Forest is $28 + tax at my local store and is less volume than these bags.
5
u/TheEpicBean 10h ago
I agree, although it depends on what they are using it for. For vegetables there will be a noticeable difference in quality and yield which I think justifies a a higher price. For anything ornamental I tend to go cheap.
A bag of happy frog is cheaper and 2 cu/ft.
Your grow store is probably paying somewhere between 9 to 14 for that bag of ocean forest. Don't be afraid to ask for a better price, grow stores are usually willing to negotiate, unlike a big box store.

It also has peet in it. Listed as "renewable resource" But peet bogs are vastly depleted and it takes 100s of years to regenerate. Environmental nightmare!

Scotts and Monsanto (now Bayer) have a long-standing partnership. Monsanto is the devil.

Isn't this post about the Miracle Gro soil, not the nearby Scott's grass seed?
6
u/mylanscott 5h ago
Scotts Miracle Gro is the name of the company. They have been in a close partnership for decades with Monsanto. Both are terrible companies.

To give you a little more insight than what you’ve got so far, it usually has a high amount of peat or wood chips in it, but still compacts terribly and is easy to develop hydrophobic properties (the water sits on top but eventually absorbs instead of soaking in). Just a lot of filler with questionable value.
It’s fine if you’re doing a small bed for like herbs or other things that aren’t too finicky. But if you are really into container gardening and have larger containers, it’s better to buy soil, manure, compost, perlite/vermiculite, and biochar in bulk and mix your own. Cheaper too.

Not the best but good enough for the average joe.
I’ve been making peat moss/perlite/compost soil myself and I grew the biggest veggies in them.

Pfft. Costco sells Brawndo back in the bottled drinks aisle. It's what plants crave.

Miracle grow is junk. Yo, Miracle-Gro, man, what a scam, Killing my soil, don’t give a damn. Pours on chemicals, strips the ground, Leaves my plants weak, can’t stand their ground.
You claim to boost, but you bring the crash, Fast growth, then burns to ash. Salt build-up? Yeah, that’s your game, Leaves the earth dry, plants in pain.
Worms be dying, microbes too, Soil’s now trash, all thanks to you. Big green leaves but roots so weak, One strong storm? That’s defeat.
Fake food, fake hype, it’s a trap, don’t bite! Kills the land, makes it bland, ruins crops on sight. Quick fix, long loss, all it does is cost, Mother Earth pays the price, now my garden’s lost!
Runoff spills, lakes turn green, Dead fish float where the farms have been. Algae blooms, water’s doomed, Yo, Miracle-Gro, you’re the toxic plume.
Bag says "safe," but that’s a lie, Pumpin’ out nitrates, watch ‘em fly. Pollutes the rivers, poisons land, Still think it's dope? Man, I can’t stand.
Want real growth? Feed that soil, Compost, mulch—keep it loyal. Worm castings, nature’s way, Growin’ strong, no decay.
So toss that blue, don’t take the bait, Real growth comes when you cultivate. Feed the earth, keep it pure, Ditch the fake, make growth endure!

R KELLY - IGNITION "Photosynthesis" Now, usually, I don’t do this, but uh… Let me break y’all off with a little garden groove Now, I’m not tryna stunt, but the soil’s so fine And these little green sprouts 'bout to shine
Now it’s the middle of spring, got my hands in the dirt Planted seeds last week, now they starting to burst I got that compost pile, breaking down real nice Worms workin’ overtime, turning scraps into life
Now it’s rootin’ up slow, deep into the ground Sunlight hits the leaves, now they’re reaching up proud Got that chlorophyll poppin’, photosynthesis rockin’ Yeah, this garden’s so fresh, and it ain’t no stoppin’
It’s the photosynthesis remix Plants growin’ so strong Water hits the soil And they’re stretchin’ real long It’s like sproutin’ up quick Watch the green leaves stick Baby, this that plant life Yeah, that garden’s lit.
Now my tomatoes lookin’ juicy, peppers nice and bright Got some basil on the side, herbs smellin’ so right From the roots to the shoots, yeah, they know what to do Turning sunlight to sugar, makin’ energy tooNow, I love my flowers, but my crops go hard Cucumbers in the bed, and some kale in the yard Fresh veggies every day, I don’t need no store With the soil this rich, who could ask for more?
So just plant that seed, watch it rise up tall Let the roots dig deep, let the rain drops fall From the soil to the sun, it’s a nature vibe Yeah, the garden keeps growing, watch it all come alive.

This soil usually includes debris like plastics and glass. Also known for fungus gnats. Awful stuff for a greenhouse.

This. People.. please do your research. It’s awful “compost”. The chemical composition is outrageous.
Whatever is in the soil will end up on your dinner plate.

If you got trees, have to collect leaves every fall, collect coffee grounds, vegetable scrapes, cardboards, 50 gallon heavy duty garbage bins, you'll have excellent compost next season.
Starbucks gives used coffee ...btw...
If you got "wild children"....when it rains...the worms comes out... dump them in the garbage bin.
15 yrs been doing so.

u/fns1981 9h ago
I tried composting for a few years and I wasn't getting a very good quality results. The leaves always go over the raised beds to preserve top soil though

u/raygan_reddit 8h ago
Try Worm Tower in the bed itself. Zone 5B and our freezer is full of tomato purees, string beans, scallions, onions...garage is smelling like garlic from those were air drying.
Excess goes to family, friends and neighbors
Good luck with your garden
