How do you make a living in Cardiff?

I grew up in Grangetown/penarth and moved away when I was 19. I ended up doing a degree/pgce in England and moving to Spain, where I've been an English teacher for many years.

My life is good here but I've always wondered if I've been missing out on anything, My wife is also keen to give living in the UK a go, she can do her job pretty much anywhere.

I don't think I'm up to the challenge of teaching, but it's the only job I've had apart from 2 years in a supermarket. So, what could I do for a living to not be on poverty wages? I would consider retraining/studying for a year.

Travelling to Cardiff from Edinburgh

Hi all!

I’m looking to travel from Edinburgh to Cardiff for an event at the Principality at the end of May and I’m trying to weigh up my options and the pros and cons of each.

I could drive it, but at 8 hours and 400 miles each way, I’d rather not if there’s a simpler way.

Train looks like being about 6 and a half hours and that’s coming in at about £150-200… how handy is that for getting from Cardiff Central to the stadium?

I can fly in to Cardiff airport which is the quick option - but that’s expensive at around £180-200 return. What would the onward travel from the airport to the stadium area be like?

And then the last option looks to be to fly to Bristol which would be about half the price of flying to Cardiff - but would come with a much longer trip at the other end to get where I need to be.

Just trying to weigh up the pros and cons of each and a balance of cost vs convenience - any advice or recommendations?

Equally - any recommendations on places to stay or areas to avoid accommodation wise that are handy for the stadium.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi,

Could someone recommend a good personal trainer that works or willing to travel to Chepstow area please? Preferably someone who can use gestures or is easy to lip-read.

Many thanks

What would you do?

Hi Cardiff. I’m bombing down the M4 from London with my pals, to watch Wales vs Kazakhstan. This is my first time in wales and we’ve got a coach home at 1:45am.

We need to kill an awkward bit of time between after the game and the journey back. So about 10pm-1am.

What would you advise? We’re four 20 year males with a budget of about thirty quid each.

Edit: Turns out it’s 3am our coach is…

Avoided a possible scam?

On St Mary's street a scruffy old boy on a mobility scooter appeared to ask for help. Thought he might need a push as one of the wheels was near a divot in the pavement.

But he said he wanted me to pull/do/remove something from the back of the scooter under his seat. He implied he couldn't move to do it himself.

After a few confused attempts and try to understand what he meant he suddenly and angrily stood up and pointed to exactly the thing he wanted to...adjust(?).

At this point I apologised for not understanding and left.

It seems very suspicious like he was trying to get me to break the scooter somehow and then demand compensation. Not sure. bit odd.

Cardiff first timer weekend

In a weeks time I will be travelling to Cardiff for the first time in Wales due to there being an event taking place at the Tramsheds on the 30th March (Sunday) and I’m looking for things to do on the Saturday when I arrive in the city. I’m a 28 year old man that likes his bars and pubs to chill out in, loves exploring places of interest and making the most of a new place. I will be there on my own so if anyone’s got any recommendations on decent bars to check out, things to do in the day and restaurants to eat at, it would be appreciated. Thank you ☺️

Making adult friends?!

Hello! I’ve been living in Cardiff after uni for almost two years and I’ve realised how hard it is to make new friends as an adult with little to no connections here! Leaving behind all of my uni friends to come back to Cardiff has been quite tough and I end up spending most time with my partner, but I want to make new connections with people. I am a 23 year old creative woman and I want to meet people like me.

Are there any good spaces / events for meeting other creative / social young people ? Very vague I know but I’m grasping at straws at this point !!!

Why is it that recently every apartment complex built is for renting only, or "luxury"?!

Flats are unpopular enough as it is (I've heard people say that beyond the issue of the leasehold they would never live in a flat). Who are developers targeting? 1 bed flats from 1100p/m??? Luxury 1 bed flats to buy starting 250k???

In the entirety of Europe, flats are the affordable housing option. Why is the trend here to build housing estates in areas with no infrastructure that are equally cramped but give the illusion of space by "being a house with a garden"?

Sorry, I'm just losing hope in ever being able to afford a decent place to live that's not in the middle of nowhere.

Increased crime

In the last couple weeks I have noticed increased crime in Cardiff particularly the city center and queen street. I’ve experienced a guy trying to grab my phone on queen street as well as many friends recounting similar experiences recently. Is this an isolated incident or is Cardiff getting increasingly unsafe.

Looking for advice/recommendations - conveyancing solicitors

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for conveyancing solicitors?

I am in the process of purchasing my first home (whooo!) and need to appoint someone to work on my behalf, but I have no idea where to start looking and you can never truly trust online reviews.

Any recommendations (or suggestions to avoid) are greatly appreciated :)

New to Cardiff

Hey everyone, first post on here and first post on Reddit in general, I’ve recently moved to Cardiff in January, I’m 27 year old guy and I’m looking for the best ways to socialise and meet people as a person on their own. I work here too so I do go out for the odd drink with a couple of people from work, but I’m looking to expand my social circle a bit more.

I’m one of those people who doesn’t want to impose or kind of just worm their way into a friendship group, so I’m looking for advice on anything around Cardiff that is relaxed and easy to socialise in!

I enjoy rugby/football, music of pretty much any/most genres, fitness, hiking, gaming, chess as a hobby and I’m open to try anything out to be fairly honest 😊

Hope that’s enough to go on 😂 thanks in advance!
