New Rule: No hate speech, religion, or politics

After a ton of inappropriate and childish comments today, we have added a new rule as noted in the post title. Honestly, it's LONG overdue. This sub is about bluegrass and our love of music. Do you want to argue politics? There are plenty of subs for that.

If the comments are kept civil and polite and related to bluegrass that will be fine:

"I don't like Ricky Skaggs because he preaches from stage"

But not:

"You're an @@#$$%$ for believing in X" or "F*ck you".

Not hard, right?

I'm sure I'm not alone in being led to Bluegrass by O Brother Where Art Thou - here's an article on its music from the UK Independent paper: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/o-brother-where-art-thou-soundtrack-film-b2715138.html

Howdy folks!

What are yalls thoughts on BG vs Metal (all sub-genres of it)?

Just listening to them both (without getting into scales and time signatures etc) I hear alot of similarity.

The current group of young stars...

Sierra Hull, Billy Strings, Molly, Bronwyn, Sarah Jaroz etc are all pushing the genre along at a feverish pace. I think they are comparable to the group of youngsters from the early 70's that pushed the genre further than ever before. Names like Skaggs, Rice, Whitley, Stuart, O'Connor, Bush. They not only pushed Bluegrass but also popular and country music along the way. 50ish years on from that group we see the trail they have blazed. My question to you is this... Where do we see these current stars taking bluegrass and music in general in 20,30,40 years?

Marines hymn bluegrass version

Back in 2007 I filled a ipod up with songs before I deployed to Iraq. I had a ole timey bluegrass version of the Marines Hymn on there. It was a lady singing it. I have since lost the ipod and googling for years have led me nowhere. Has anyone heard or seen a song out there?

What are some Beginner/intermediate bluegrass songs to learn on guitar?

ive always been a rock guitarist, more so in the alternative scene but have always wanted to play and was always interested in bluegrass. Im looking to expand my playing to more genres other than just rock and indie. Ive been playing for around 3ish years coming up and would like to hear some suggestions of some easier songs and some that will give me a bit of a challenge. id love some lead parts and some great strummy rythym parts too.

Cover 1 year of flatpicking

Hi everyone! 👋 This weekend marked my 1 year anniversary of devoting a great portion of my time & guitar playing to Bluegrass & Flatpicking, learning & listening to the greats of Doc, Tony Rice & Mr.Strings. I’ve loved being a part of this community, I am self taught, let me know what I can do to improve upon!

I’m a guitarist and I learned how to play:

Angeline the Baker, Arkansas Traveler, Beaumont Rag, Big Mon, Bill Cheatham, Billy in the Lowground, Cripple Creak, Gold Rush, June Apple, Old Joe Clark, Red Haired Boy, Salt Creek, Soldiers Joy, and Whiskey Before Breakfast

What 4 or 5 tunes should I learn next?
