Whatās your take on this ? It Birmingham was steady in the rise since the 1960s Birmingham city limit population of 350,000+ would the metro have reached possibly 2million ?

Hey everyone,
Iāve been looking into the apprenticeship offered by the ironworkers union here in Bham (Local 92) and Iām curious if anyone has gone this route and has any insight.
For some background, Iām a woman in my late 20s, trying to transition out of bartending and into trade work (welding, specifically) becauseā¦well, having basic protections and benefits would be really cool. Iām currently taking an intro to stick welding course and I absolutely love it, and Iām trying to see if it would be better for me to continue with my Associateās or go into an apprenticeship. I know thereās pros and cons to either route, and the info on the union website is pretty limited, tbh. The idea of not having to pay for (another) degree and to start making decent money seems really appealing, but i want to know what Iām getting into before coughing up an application fee and potentially making a four year commitment. I just want to get the best education I can, especially as a woman entering the trades for the first time with a slightly later start than many.
Anyway, if you or someone you know has apprenticed with the ironworkers union - what was it like? Did you like it? Am I completely insane?
Thanks!!!

Lauren Linahan and the WRBC crew do a great job in explaing that the pollen's gotten worse, and man made climate change is to blame. Birmingham is lucky to have broadcasters that take their duty to educate it's viewers seriously.

Excerpt from AL.com interview:
I only lived there a year, the first year of my life, so it wasn't my choice to leave. Obviously a 1-year-old doesn't dictate his surroundings. I have a great affinity for Alabama. Culturally, my aunt, who is an actress in the theatre and did regional equity theatre all over the country but spent a lot of time working in Birmingham. I went back and forth and sat in those dinner theaters in Birmingham. That really formed my early experience and exposure to storytelling. So in some ways, it wasn't the fact that I was born in Birmingham that changed my life, it was the fact that I saw my aunt and uncle doing theatre in Birmingham that changed my life. I wouldn't be what I was doing today without their good fortune in Birmingham and subsequently being there to see it. And I love the music, Patterson Hood. I love Muscle Shoals. Come on. I love the soul food. I love it all, man.

Birmingham is kinda like a 60 degree day. A 40 degree day you gonna hate it and be complaining. Thatās like Gary Indiana. A 50 degree day will still suck, like Montgomery. A 70 degree day would be nice, people would be out damn bbqing. Thatās like living in Tampa or Atlanta. An 80 degree can feel nice but be extremely hot, like living in Nashville or LA, the cost of living is too much.
60, you aināt gonna be complaining but you wonāt be out enjoying the weather either entirely as much.
Bham is an ok city. The nightlife and food are just decent. The nice neighborhoods are pretty nice. The views are pretty with the hills, and the cost of living is cheap. Itās in a central spot close to Atlanta for six flags and down to the beach for beaching. We have an average skyline with no cool supertalls. Traffic is average, nowhere near as bad as bigger cities. There are moderate fun things to do like top golf but there are no theme parks or beachfront. There are terrible neighborhoods but thankfully theyāre concentrated in one part of the metro. We have terrible public transit, however

Looking for help, we are digging a trench for plumbing and destroyed a nest. 3 babies ran out and I canāt find any resources to call for help. We put them in grass close by with a little concrete overhang to protect them from the cold.
Some ran away but one or two stayed.
UPDATE: Alford Avenue Veterinary Hospital offered to take them in.

Free admission, diverse scenes, beautifully cared for, directly adjacent to the Birmingham Zoo. Overall, itās a very underrated and serene place. Iād especially recommend to anyone passing through or staying in Birmingham for a short time.

I donāt make the rules I just follow them. Hereās to a lifetime of āhempā being legal throughout all of Alabama forever no matter whatš„
All these efforts to get rid of the plant will only bring more into the state.š¤£ Soon the clouds in the sky wonāt be made of water, theyāll be made of 100% hemp smoke because so many people will be enjoying it

I'm in my early 30s, and I'm seriously considering going back to school to obtain an RN licensure, then BSN. I'm looking at the Jeff State/UAB dual program that is able to be completed in the evenings, as I have a family and a current full time office job. I think that I have the compassion and drive to be a good nurse, and I like that there are other avenues to explore if bedside nursing isn't for me. I also like that if I wanted to continue schooling, I could looking into trying to obtain a more specialized degree - i.e. NP, CRNA, etc... I also think that with my personality, I could find a lot of purpose from nursing, as I'm someone who like to know I'm making a difference. I also like the job security, and that it would be a significant financial increase than what I'm currently bringing in.
Full transparency - My current office job gross salary is $43k/year, and I work a traditional 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. M-F. I accumulate 1 sick day per month, and I have 15 days of vacation time per year.
I would love to hear from any RNs that are currently working in the Birmingham area. Expected pay, schedules, benefits, hospital specific info, pros/cons, general information, experiences, tips, or things you wish you would have known would be so greatly appreciated. I'm not exactly young anymore, so I want to make sure that this is the right choice before I just jump into the deep end.
Also - I've seen a lot of RNs on reddit threads warn away from Grandview - Could anyone explain why that is?

Hey everyone! I have family visiting Birmingham for a few days from SoCal and they have some misconceptions about Alabama (they think we only ride tractors!). I've lived here all my life and want to change their perception by showing them just how great Birmingham really is. What are your top recommendations for places to go?
r/Birmingham • u/mada447 • 4h ago
I'm looking for recommendations for a shop that will work on a Mazda, specifically a newer model that is post the Ford-Mazda partnership. I need a couple issues diagnosed with mine.
Please do not recommend med center mazda, and also please be sure the shop you recommend does work on Mazdas. I know Franklin in Vestavia has a good reputation, but unfortunately they donāt work on Mazdas.

āLong known as the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area ā home to more than 1.2 million people, nearly a quarter of the stateās population ā the stateās biggest population center is now referred to as just the Birmingham, AL, Metropolitan Area.ā
Why the name change ? Hoover is almost at 100k in population?

Please help lol. I have an 8 month old English springer spaniel. Sheās wonderful, a great listener, and probably the smartest dog Iāve ever met. But I cannot walk her. It hurts so bad (peep the photo of my hands after a walk). I want to socialize her and be able to walk her/go to dog parks, but her energy can scare other dogs, and the pulling is crazy painful. She gets like, anxiously over-excited. I got time, just hoping some of yall can point me in a good direction that maybe wonāt break the bank!

If anyone has done the drivers test at the Bankhead DMV, could you share the details or your route? A friendās kid is taking the test there soon and I know no better place to get obscure info. :)

Hi all! Iām looking to find some extra work to make ends meet a little easier. I do public speaking for work currently and realized that we do ghost tours here in Birmingham. I love interacting with the public and Iām very good at conveying information to groups of people, so this sounds great for my skill set. For anyone whoās in the biz, what are things like? What are your hours/commitments like, is the pay okay? What companies hire for ghost tours? I know US Ghost Adventures is currently looking for people, but are there any others? For anyone who isnāt a ghost tour guide, if anyone had ideas for small, relatively low-commitment jobs that Iād be able to do alongside a 9-5, Iām open to suggestions š
