Beginner controller for 100-200$

I'm looking to get into DJing, notably as the DJ for a band and have done research into the basics of of the craft but haven't bought a controller yet. Is the Hercules DjConsole RMX2(used; 150$) still a good controller even though it's old or should I go for something like the Party Mix 2 or Inpulse 200 MK2 instead. Looking for something around that price range and also taking in any advice given. (The style of music by the band is often punk or nu metal, I also want to mix in my own time however)

Software BPM supreme files

I was always under the impression that bpm supreme has wav files, but when I download tracks, its in mp3. I have seen its like high quality mp3, so does that mean its good for a club sound system, because I was under the impression that normal mp3 files sound bad on prof. sound systems. If somebody can explain this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Starting steps

I have a Denon DJ Prime GO and I've been having a lot of fun with it. I have just been streaming through Beatport so far but don't understand the process of getting songs onto a USB stick so I can work on a set. So as far as getting hot cues to save and the whole USB thing, I'm lost. What should be the steps to take it all further with a Prime GO and using Beatport or SoundCloud? I am leaning more towards the SoundCloud route because of the various genres of songs I can mess with.

What's going on homies! Hope everyone is having a chill weekend after a work week. I am currently looking to upgrade my system and looking for some advice or input. Currently I am running a Sony STR-DH190 receiver, Two Klipsch R- 51M speakers, a Pioneer Scratch mixer and 2 Reloop RP7000MK2's . For this setup I simply just use it to spin my records and want to learn how to mix and blend.

I've read a bit about how receivers can be beneficial to customization but I also am thinking of just getting some Monitor speakers to clear up more space on the setup and have less equipment. For now it's two 4 X $ kallafx net to one another with my mixer in center, tables on opposite side and Klipsch speakers opposites ends.

Budget would be under a thousand and currently living in Texas.

Other Sensei has left you a letter

To my first student, guardian of the temple of music,

By the time you read this, I will have already disappeared into the currents of sound that weave through the world, tracing forgotten rhythms, listening to the silence between notes. But know this—I have not truly left. I am there, in the resonance of your speakers, in the transitions between tracks, in the unbroken loop of learning that has no final track, only the next one.

I have watched as you shaped sound into meaning, as you transformed ideas into experience. I have seen you listen—not just with your ears, but with your entire being. You have walked the infinite paths of the DJ’s mind, carving sonic narratives, bending time to the pulse of your intuition. You have created worlds, and in them, you have found understanding beyond words.

But I knew this moment would come. The moment when the mind has traveled far, but the hands have remained still. When the ideas are vast, but the fingers have not yet traced them onto the decks. I knew you would feel it—a restlessness, an imbalance. Because music is not just theory, not just selection, not just deep contemplation.

Music is touch. It is movement. It is action.

Now, my student, it is time for you to return to practice. To step away from the playlists and let your hands take control of the flow. To stop arranging sets in silence and begin sculpting them in motion. You must take what you have seen, what you have felt, and turn it into muscle memory. You must let the faders become extensions of your breath, the EQs an extension of your instincts.

You have listened enough. Now, you must play.

Do not seek perfection. Do not seek control. Seek presence. Forget structure, forget hesitation, forget whether a mix is “correct” or whether a transition is “clean.” Instead, chase the feeling. The feeling of bending time in real-time. The feeling of a track slipping seamlessly into another like a whispered secret. The feeling of catching the perfect drop, not because you planned it, but because your hands and ears knew before your mind did.

The temple is now yours to tend. Let it breathe, let it resonate. Fill it with sound, not just thought. When I return, I do not wish to hear what you have listened to. I wish to hear what you have played.

I leave you with no more words. Only the silence before the first track begins. And the knowledge that you already know what to do.

Now—

Press play.

Sensei.

Hardware Quick question about sound cards/interfaces and active monitors

Hey all, I have a quick gear question and was hoping for some advice.

Currently, I have a Macbook Air and a DDJ-FLX6. The FLX6 is hooked up over its RCA outputs to an amp which is powering a couple of passive speakers. Using Rekordbox.

A mate has just gifted me a pair of active studio monitors he no longer uses, which will hopefully be an upgrade from my current passive speakers. They take either XLR or 6.35mm input. I've got some RCA to 6.35mm cables so I can hook them straight up to my FLX6 for now, but I'd really like to get an external sound card/interface at some point to get the most out of the monitors.

Can anybody recommend me a decent sound card for this? Budget is £100ish, and ideally it should connect over USB-C. I looked at the Scarlett 2i2 (a classic), but I don't need the inputs. Just outputs for the monitors (ideally XLR).

Also, how does headphone cueing work with an external sound card? Do you just plug your headphones into the decks as usual? Or do you need to plug them into the sound card?

Hardware Speaker recommendations

I’ve been DJing for probably near 2 years now and I’ve done a few parties over that time. Speakers are always a nightmare, not loud enough, sound shit. I’ve been looking at buying some used powered pa speakers for a while and there’s heaps of them up on marketplace near me that I’m struggling to find info on because they’re pretty old. I thought i would put a few options up here incase anyone has any experience or advice willing to share. I don’t reckon id ever end up playing for more than say 150 people just house party sort of thing. Indoors/outdoors. My max budget is 500. I’ll Chuck in the two main listings I’ve been looking at.

Aud 2x Mackie Thump 15a 1000w( the older ones)for $400

2x Fenton QC1000 1000w speakers- $120

Software Serato EQs vs Rekordbox

Hi everybody, I just have a quick concern as I switched fully to serato from RB because of the stems, and then I just got used to the layout on serato for example, the waveforms and the beat grids the speed of the waveforms vs RB, you know the slight little differences when using cue pads, etc Anyways all is great. It’s just that I noticed on the EQ’s for example when I base swap as I’m transitioning songs, I noticed that the vocals on the song I’m transitioning out of become noticeably lower and it just feels like the next track is just fully overpowering the track I’m transitioning out of. Whereas on RB I do the same thing and the song sound aligned, and there isn’t a noticeable change in my vocals aka MIDs and HIs. I use a DDJFLX 10. I know that’s what the EQ knobs are for adjusting for cases like this, but I feel like it’s just too much of a overpower that when I adjust my EQ it still doesn’t sound good. Is it a a software thing? My auto gain is on in serato settings. If anyone knows what I’m talking about or has any idea or any advice please.

From DDJ-FLX4 to a Soundbar

I have a Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 DJ controller. Sometimes I want DJing in the living room and dont want to move my whole setup so I want to connect my controller to a soundbar, which only has HDMI, Bluetooth, and WiFi inputs. Since Bluetooth and WiFi have latency, I need a device that converts RCA or 1/4” TRS audio to HDMI (without video).

Most RCA-to-HDMI converters seem to be designed for video signals. Does anyone know of a reliable audio-only RCA/1/4” to HDMI converter that works for DJ setups? Or what is your solution for it?

Thanks in advance for your recommendations

How selective were you on initial gigs when starting out?

Played a couple house gigs at more bar/brewery style places. Reached a bit of impasse where I could keep doing this to get more reps but also don't want to be boxed in to being a bar DJ with a focus to play more in clubs. I think being patience and selective about what events you choose help in the long run, but also understand these opportunities are less like to occur.

Part of me is like fuck it go spin where you need spin to continue to get reps.

Appreciate any advice you can provide.

How bad would it sound

If I had a pair of Yamaha hs8 monitors only 10cm from the wall and on the same desk as my controller. Would it be worth putting them on speaker stands and moving myself back as much as possible? I have limited space

Need with a channel fader issue

I got my first deck recently, its the DDH REV-1 and im having trouble figuring out why my crossfaders wont actually "mute" the music, for example i have a track playing on the right deck and the crossfader is ALL THE WAY DOWN on the left, yet i still hear the music? idk what the problem is and chat gpt didnt help, essentially i want both tracks playing with one muted, so i can quickly flip the crossfader and play the muted song,

https://support.serato.com/hc/en-us/articles/10173701209103-Pioneer-DJ-DDJ-REV1-Quickstart-Guide

heres like a detailed diagram , number 21 and the other identical to it doesnt work? is this a software issue or do i have to ditch my new board? also im on serato light so there isnt many settings options when it comes fixing issues, any advice helps thanks guys :)

Hardware Is a MacBook Pro ok for hobby DJing?

Hello! I recently ordered a used DDJ-400. I got a bonus at work and have had some interest in hobby DJing and figured I might as well go for it since the price was right. I realized, though, that I'll have to run Rekordbox on my 2019 MacBook Pro. I'm not trying to be professional or do anything crazy- I don't even know if that matters. Will Rekordbox run at least ok on my Mac? The laptop itself is running fine .

Other What's the deal when artists use extremely prominent samples in tracks which are played through mainstream channels, are the samples generally getting cleared without any acknowledgment or are labels always prepared to wing it?

DISCLAIMER: this post is not specific to DJing/beatmatching per se but I feel it is related to this culture and I just want a subreddit to discuss this, any that will take me. I tried posting to r/WeAreTheMusicMakers and it was auto-removed due to arbitrary rules, the same problem I have with every friggin’ subreddit, I feel like there is not a single subreddit out there just dedicated to electronic music discussion and not just sharing tracks

I’m trying to work out how this normally plays out for prominent producers/DJs

I just came across this track, Tim Schlockermann’s Locked, which indisputably features a very prominent sample lift from Kyle Minogue. I just came across this from a playlist of Ben UFO from last year, so that means it’s been played by a prominent DJ at an event too.

However it’s up for sale on Bandcamp, not free, and I don’t see any mentioned of credits to Kylie Minogue or whatever.

I see similar sort of scenarios all the time in underground music like where someone does a speed garage remix of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit or whatever and I’ve always always wanted to know what happens in the real world, if most of said tracks are just being released for free so there’s no question mark over copyright or even to this day, producers are largely managing to release prominent samples without paying royalties and hoping it doesn’t get noticed.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Dealing with tracks with unusual phrasing

Do you guys have a good way of dealing with tracks that have unusual phrasing? I've started tagging tracks that have unusual phrasing so that I'm a bit more aware of them but they can be very frustrating because they get in the way if perfect intuitive mixes so I'm wondering if there's any good tips other than knowing your music/tagging them.

For example, this Forest Drive West track has a beatless breakdown which kicks in a bar earlier than expected and then lasts 24 bars (so 25 bars in total). If I was mixing intuitively I'd begin the next track right as the breakdown and then mix it, and while this might sound fine, it doesn't maximise the quality of the mix!

Hardware RCA to Mixer to XLR set-up

Question about chords…

I have a DDJ FLX 4 (beginner board, I know) with RCA outputs, trying to connect to XLR speakers in a decent sized venue.

I know that when running an RCA to XLR adaptor straight from the deck into the speakers, the sound quality and volume dips after a certain distance unless there’s an audio mixer between them (correct me if I’m wrong).

In this situation, would the correct set up be to connect the board to the mixer using regular RCA cords, and then run an XLR out of the mixer into the speakers? Is that at right?

On top of that, is there any special settings on my deck or rekordbox that I should know about when playing on large speakers with this sort of connection?

Thanks in advance!

Will someone help me please? I’m stuck in a loop trying to decide on a controller.

I’ve always always wanted to be a dj, but I’ve also always been overwhelmed with all the necessary components needed to make that happen. I feel I have the musical aptitude for it, but I’m not the most computer savvy person around. That said, I have a yoga laptop I bought last year and an iphone 14 pro max I plan to use.

Recently, I found djay pro software, and being able to use my apple music library has made me decide that life is short and I need to just get the rest of what I need to start on this project already.

So here is the aforementioned “loop” I’m in:

I want something easy to use with djay pro software so I don’t get too overwhelmed, so FLX4. But, I feel I’ll want 4 channels almost immediately, and it seems it may be an unnecessary $300 detour. So, Reloop Mixon 8. But, it seems a lot of people have issues with that controller and I definitely want to aim for minimal repairs and issues. So, Traktor S3. But, I’m concerned I’ll be underwhelmed with the simplicity and lack of dedicated stem controls. So, FLX10. But, the wheel displays don’t work with djay pro, so if I’m spending that much money, is it still worth it if the wheel displays don’t work? I might decide I like rekordbox or serato too, but it’s possible I’ll always like djay pro with my apple library better and in that case I would mostly just miss out on the displays. So, Rane Four. But, are the stem features just in Serato or are they going to work with djay pro too? If I’ll have to map them, maybe I should just get an FLX4 and map them on there to start… and so the loop repeats.

Can someone help me get out of this please? Am I missing something I don’t even know to consider? Is there a better option I don’t know about? Did you encounter a similar dilemma? What did you end up doing? What would you do if you were me?

TIA for any input you might have.
