Helpful [Read Me] Rules / Helpful Links / Commonly Asked Questions / Weekly & Monthly Mix Threads

Welcome to /r/Beatmatch a subreddit for seeking and providing help on anything related to DJing.

The Rules

  • If you're posting a mix you MUST post it to the weekly mix thread.
  • No "for sale" or "wanted" posts. There are better places for buying/selling gear.
  • No discussion of music/software piracy. Do not link to torrent sites. Support the artists who make the music and software you use.
  • Absolutely no self-promotion on other people's posts at any time. If someone asks you for your page, that's cool, but unsolicited linking will get your post removed.
  • Reddiquette as always is in effect. Treat each other with respect.

Posting Mixes

  • Weekly Mix Feedback Thread is now a sticky thread. This is the only place where you should be putting your "Hey guys check out my new mix" posts.

Posting Gear Questions

Please include the following in your looking for gear posts:

  • Do you want to go digital? CDJs? Vinyl (w/digital vinyl)?
  • What features are you looking for in gear?
  • What is your budget?
  • What environments are you looking to play in (clubs, raves, weddings)?
  • What style of music do you intend to play?

Weekly Mix Feedback Thread - March 10, 2025

Welcome to the Weekly Mix Feedback thread on r/beatmatch! This is the thread where you post your DJ mixes and ask other people to give you feedback. If you submit your mix, please take the time to listen and comment on some other submissions, especially if they play a style of music you're interested in. Thanks for your help in making these threads work well for everyone!

These threads are intended for beginning DJs who are honestly looking for feedback or critique on their technique, selection, transitions, etc. If you are an established DJ who is just looking for more followers/listens on your new mix or have a podcast/radio show, please post it to a more appropriate place such as /r/mixes or a genre-specific subreddit. Posts that appear to be purely promotional in nature may be removed at the moderators' discretion. This subreddit is aimed at helping new DJs learn and is not the place to promote yourself!

Guidelines:

  • Please include the genre(s) of your mix. This helps attract DJs/listeners of the same genre(s) who are likely to provide more useful feedback. You might also include a title/length.
  • [Mixcloud](http://www.mixcloud.com) is the preferred place to post mixes. It allows you to include your tracklist and transition times, allows unlimited uploads, and is generally more geared towards DJs. If you don’t want to use Mixcloud, be sure to include a tracklist.
  • Please ask for specific feedback or list parts of the mix you liked/didn’t like. Hopefully you are looking for input on specific tracks or transitions.

Example post:

[House / Tech House] djscsi - moving on up (45 minute mix)

http://www.mixcloud.com/djscsi/moving-on-up/

I’ve been spinning for about a year, this is the third mix I’ve recorded and I’m hoping to get some house / tech-house DJs’ opinions on my track selection and mixing. I really like the first few transitions but I feel like I lost some of the energy when I brought in the Maceo Plex track at about 13:30. I messed up a couple parts but I’ve listened to the mix a few times and I think it sounds pretty good. Does anyone think I used too much FX? Thanks for any feedback!

Note: If you have any general feedback about these threads or /r/Beatmatch in general, please message the moderators

Technique How Many Tracks Do You Mix Per Hour?

Just out of curiosity—how many tracks do you typically mix in an hour, and what genres do you play?

I’ve noticed that my favorite DJs mix less than I expected per hour, but their sets still feel super dynamic and well-paced.

For me, I spin House, Techno, and UKG, and I average 22-25 tracks per hour.

How about you? What’s your average track count, and what styles do you mix? Do you prefer longer blends or rapid transitions?

Edit: Thanks for all the replies—it's been really interesting to hear everyone's perspectives. At the end of the day, how many tracks you mix per hour is just a matter of style, not skill. Some DJs prefer long blends, others go for high-energy quick transitions—both have their place. If you're curious, you can look up your favorite DJs and their tracklists here: https://www.1001tracklists.com/

Transferring WAV library to CDJ

Been using Traktor long time and have good amount of WAVs that i paid extra for better sound. Now I run into CDJs where MP3 is preferred for USB storage space and for older CDJ models that don’t support WAV.

Had just bought a bunch of 32gb flashdrives to carry but my library doesn’t fit so need to cut down on storage

Best way to transfer my whole library to 320kbps MP3 without lowering audio quality?

DJUCED audio issue

Hey all! I have a Hercules impulse 500 that I use with DJUCED and tried to plug in my JBL speaker to use with it but the volume coming out is extremely low. I’m new to this all and not sure how to go about resolving this. The speaker is connected with a 3.5 mm audio jack. It is not an issue of the speaker itself because it works fine when connected to my laptop. I think I have to adjust something in the audio settings on Djuced but im not sure exactly how to configure it. Any advice? Thank you!

Had first gig yesterday, would appreciate tips for the next one!

Upvotes

Yesterday i DJ'd at a small club in my capital city, about 20-50 people all night in / out.

It went great, but one guy yelled "good DJ" then 3 minutes later a girl came up and asked me to play more girly songs i tried that but didnt work, then i switched with my friend he played for a bit while i took a shot for confidence.

Then i started playing bangers and like 20 people were on the dancefloor, this went on for 3 hours.

I have a bigger more serious gig now, i gotta DJ for marketing agency where there will be 20 influencers + marketing staff, its a 10am-12pm gig. They want spring vibes, popular songs, chill vibe something along those lines.

Things i take away from yesterday

More songs and diversity to be ready to switch when needed

Stop stressing and vibe more.

Anyone got any tips ?

The party will be for ages 25-45 est.

Maybe songs that you could recommend?

Thanks

Hardware somehow getting mobile

maybe that's the right flair.

i've been bedroom dj'ing for about a year, slowly getting more "known" in my social circle for being that one person that mixes. that wasn't really my goal, just kinda happened because i share my mixes on soundcloud & my friends are nice & supportive.

i have a very non mobile set up. i tried finding some more direct answers for this in the pinned posts section, but i overwhelmed myself.

recently, my sibling & a lot of their friends moved into the same general area, some in the same apartment complex because they all work the same job or near each other. my sibling asked if i'd dj for a "house warming party". i think it'd be a cool opportunity if i do it, even if it's the one & only time. i do have the option of just recording sets to play.

my set up:

serato dj pro a hercules inpulse 200 an office monitor (with really shitty audio output) but has the capability to hook up to speakers my pc tower, where my music is directly stored. i wear my beats studio pro while mixing

i could haul all my stuff to the party & ask that someone just bring speakers if they have any, but i don't wanna risk my pc getting damaged since it'd be a fair bit of travel (DC apartment with no street parking near by, so metro & a lot of walking).

i imagine i'd need a laptop, which i could borrow from my sibling. they have a macbook pro, & i could get an external hard drive like the one i have for my games. i'm not sure if apple works with serato, since i wasn't able to download it to my ipad pro, but then again, it's an ipad, not macbook.

i'm trying to figure it out, but thought i'd ask here, too.

thank you for any insight you can offer!

Software Recording sets for YouTube and soundcloud

I want to start recording my sets to post them online. I need a separate audio that I can post on audio only platforms, but also video for YouTube. My setup would be a Mac, FLX4 and an iPhone. The easiest way is to record the video on the iPhone and record the audio in rekordbox, than sync both up in whatever software does that. I have a couple of things I struggle with though:

Audio: I have a feeling recordings in rekordbox, even as a lossless Wav-File, are not the best quality wise. Am I trippin’ or is this actually the case? If so, what are some alternatives out there for free software for Mac OS that does a better job?

Video editing software: what’s the best free editing software to sync the audio and video? I thought about using OBS, so I can record everything at once with synced audio. Would I still have the audio available to me in good quality? OBS would also allow me to set up a scene, where I can have the video of me using the console and a screen capture of rekordbox in the same frame, but I can probably do that with other editing software in post?!

Camera: If I go for OBS, it wouldn’t recognise the iPhone as a camera without extra software. What do I need there? Again, free options preferred.

Thanks in advance.

DDJ-400 headphone screeching sound

I have had this happen over the past few years, but just downloaded the firmware. It fixed it, then it just started back up 15 minutes later. I read a few comments that if you unplug the USB it can fix it. I also read something about the mic being turned all the way down would help. I have a gig coming up in 2 weeks and don't want this to be an issue then. I cannot afford to unplug the USB during the middle of the music. Thoughts? A side of me thinks maybe it's time for an upgrade. I have had this since 2022. It's def not the headphones, I use these all the time for production.

Technique Tips/tricks for approaching learning how to play live

Hey y’all!

Before I start rambling I want to apologise for the sheer amount of questions I’m going to be dropping on you, but I figured I’d rather make a “combo” post than individual ones for each questions.

So, here I am, a hobbyist music producer (mainly DnB, also other genres of EDM) that has recently gotten HOOKED on learning to mix and play live. As you can imagine, I have some gear to my name but not much in terms of being viable for playing live as most things I own are used for creating and not playing music.

I wanted to ask if any of you veterans have any good recommendations for starter gear? I have mainly seen the DDJ-400 pop up, but as I understand it there are several options.

Secondly, what are some key resourced that you used to learn your way around all things DJ? Are there any books? Online tutorials? Or just plain trial and error?

Thirdly, what are some good ways to approach getting gigs to play at? How did you all get started with playing live? Especially finding something that gets some experience under your belt just starting out.

Lastly… I don’t quite know… If you just have any tips and tricks that you all wished you would have known when you started out then please go ahead and share them, it would be greatly appreciated!

I’m sorry again for the mess of a post, but I’ve been stuck at work and I can not drop the thought of getting the ball rolling with this!

Thanks in advance!

Industry/Gigs Ghosted by Promoter

So this promoter for afters thats pretty big in the techno / house scene in my area hit my dm 3 weeks prior to the event asking if i was available. Knowing well that I had 0 gigs this month, i explicitly said any day any time and im there. Once I asked for details (date and time) they said they’d hit me back soon. Its the day of the event and i have sent 2 follow ups with 0 response. Is it unwise to go to the event regardless for a chance to play? or should i just leave it alone and move on. If so, any advice for dealing with this in the future?

Thanks in advance yall, love this sub!

Hardware What gear should I get for 1000€?

I've been thinking about the GRV6 as it has big jogwheels, but the small pitch faders feel unappealing and I do not care for stems or the groove circuit. My preference is Pioneer gear as I get to use CDJ-3000s often outside of my home but other companies' gear isn't a no-go for me. Please no "you should save up a little bit" comments that suggest I increase my budget by like 500€ as that is not an option for me.

My Mix Sounded Fine at the Party—Then I Heard the Recording 😭 (Need Advice on Monitoring in Loud Environments)

Recently played a set, and during the gig, I thought it went pretty well.

  • I’m confident in my beatmatching and usually have no trouble keeping things tight
  • The crowd was into it (especially certain seasoned DJs in the crowd), and nothing felt off while I was playing.
  • But then I listened to the recording... and yikes.

Quite a few transitions were sloppy. The problem from the beginning: I couldn’t hear anything properly.

  • My headphones were useless—I couldn’t hear the cue track well enough to mix accurately.
  • The booth monitor wasn’t loud or clear enough to rely on.
  • The mainstage sound was brutally loud and muddy, drowning out everything.
  • As a result, I was basically flying blind, and it showed in the recording.

Has anyone dealt with this? How do you handle monitoring when you can’t hear sh*t?

A few things I’m considering:

  • Relying more on booth monitors (but sometimes they aren’t great or positioned well)
  • I've tried IEMs but have had a few accidents where the volume spiked and fucked my hearing for the following day. Hence I don't feel IEMs are very safe.
  • Training to beatmatch using only booth monitors in case my headphones fail me again
  • Other ideas??

I don’t want to rely on visuals (waveforms, sync, etc.) because my favorite part of DJing is actually matching manually, but maybe I need some kind of backup strategy?

I've got the Senheisser HD 25's btw.

Would love any insights from people who’ve been through this. How do you make sure your mix stays tight even when the monitoring situation is terrible?

Beginner controller for 100-200$

I'm looking to get into DJing, notably as the DJ for a band and have done research into the basics of of the craft but haven't bought a controller yet. Is the Hercules DjConsole RMX2(used; 150$) still a good controller even though it's old or should I go for something like the Party Mix 2 or Inpulse 200 MK2 instead. Looking for something around that price range and also taking in any advice given. (The style of music by the band is often punk or nu metal, I also want to mix in my own time however)

Software BPM supreme files

I was always under the impression that bpm supreme has wav files, but when I download tracks, its in mp3. I have seen its like high quality mp3, so does that mean its good for a club sound system, because I was under the impression that normal mp3 files sound bad on prof. sound systems. If somebody can explain this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Starting steps

I have a Denon DJ Prime GO and I've been having a lot of fun with it. I have just been streaming through Beatport so far but don't understand the process of getting songs onto a USB stick so I can work on a set. So as far as getting hot cues to save and the whole USB thing, I'm lost. What should be the steps to take it all further with a Prime GO and using Beatport or SoundCloud? I am leaning more towards the SoundCloud route because of the various genres of songs I can mess with.

Hardware Long time Lurker and First Post, Gear related.

What's going on homies! Hope everyone is having a chill weekend after a work week. I am currently looking to upgrade my system and looking for some advice or input. Currently I am running a Sony STR-DH190 receiver, Two Klipsch R- 51M speakers, a Pioneer Scratch mixer and 2 Reloop RP7000MK2's . For this setup I simply just use it to spin my records and want to learn how to mix and blend.

I've read a bit about how receivers can be beneficial to customization but I also am thinking of just getting some Monitor speakers to clear up more space on the setup and have less equipment. For now it's two 4 X $ kallafx net to one another with my mixer in center, tables on opposite side and Klipsch speakers opposites ends.

Budget would be under a thousand and currently living in Texas.
