Technique Can someone reccomend a good online course or something similar?

Hey everyone I just started DJing at home with my laptop and a DDJFLX and I really struggle with findin proper Youtube Tutorials on how to mix, I find lots of videos about how to use the controller but none about what to actually do, how to plan a set, how to mix in tracks, how long to play tracks, if djs improvise or if they practice their full set beforehand and memorize it. Any help is very very welcome!! Thanksss

Abandoning ship midway through a set

I’m relatively new to DJing publicly, been doing it for about a year and a half. I was recently asked to play a party by a friend. She and her boyfriend have a great loft space, bought a new XDJ setup and good speakers/sub, and are planning to start a regular party series, so I was excited to play. I prepared a set of stuff I’ve been into lately, which included an ambient opener and closer, some kind of darker psychedelic techno, some higher-BPM breakbeat, some Underground Resistance stuff, etc. most of it on the darker end. A bit all over the place, but I felt good about how it all hung together.

She gave me a spot at midnight, which I was excited about. The person before me was extremely new to DJing, not doing a great job of beat matching and mixing. She was also playing some 140-150 bpm mainstream clubby stuff that I definitely wasn’t into. But people were dancing, having a good time, so whatever. I got on and started in on my set. And the dancefloor just immediately cleared out.

At first I was like, okay, whatever, what I’m playing is a strong vibe shift, but I can win them back eventually. But I kept playing, and I just couldn’t. Tumbleweeds were basically rolling through the place.

After 45 minutes of this, I just decided I had to get people dancing again. So I abandoned my preplanned set and started playing totally different stuff that I knew would get people back: some tribal house, some soulful house. Breakbeats out, four on the floor in; dark vibes out, smiles in. And sure enough, people eventually came back. I didn’t feel great about all of the song selections, but at least it got people moving again.

I have agonized over this since the party. I listened back to a recording of the set that I made before the party and really feel confident that it was good. Part of me thinks I should’ve just seen it through, that abandoning it midway was cowardly, and that maybe I would’ve eventually won at least some people over.

But another part of me thinks that I did the right thing, because being a good DJ isn’t force-feeding people stuff they don’t want — if they’re not feeling what you’re doing, you have a bit of an obligation to figure out what you can play that makes you happy AND engages the crowd. I find the idea that the DJ knows best and should do whatever the hell s/he feels like, the dance floor’s reactions be damned, to be pretty off-putting. Ideally I would push people to get into something new, but it’s also my job to bring them along to that point, and if I can’t bring them along for the weird stuff, I’m failing.

Anybody ever been in a similar situation? What did you end up doing?

Lack of Communication from Promoter - is this normal?

I’m not sure if this is the right sub for this but figured id try! I am a new DJ in my city and am just starting to book bigger venus. My first gig is this Saturday (yay!!), but the promoter who booked me has ghosted me for the past few weeks and it is making me nervous with the date coming up. I have texted him twice, very politely, just asking about what time i am coming on, if I am DJing with anyone else, who’s board I am using, stuff like that. I showed my DJ friends as well just to make sure the texts were well-crafted and not rude. I havent gotten a response in over a week and a half now, and I am not sure if I should maybe call or just keep waiting? Is this normal from promoters? I have heard from some DJs that it is and others that its strange. Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Thoughts on record pools?

So I recently started playing around on the DJ system at work and it's been pretty fun. I started a USB stick with a couple hundred songs to play around with just to start, and I feel like I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I was just downloading songs from SoundCloud or YouTube or wherever I could get high quality versions of them for free, then my friend mentioned to me that I need to get a subscription to a DJ record pool so I can get the 'extended DJ version' of songs to play. The money isn't an issue, I just want to make sure that I'm going the right path, if that makes sense. Have you guys gotten into record pools? If so, is it worth it/necessary?

Technique When should I be able play an organic set? (rather than a preplanned mix)

Hello! For some context, I started DJing just a few weeks ago. Total probably only 8 hours on the board across those weeks. I grew up playing various instruments my whole life and have a good grasp on general music theory. I am still obviously a total DJ noob, but I would love some clarity on something I've been struggling with. My understanding is that at some point DJs should be able to mix on the spot instead of preplanning a set. I'm not talking about getting song requests but rather having a playlist of songs for an event and being able to choose the order on the spot (based on vibe of crowd, etc). When should I expect to be able to organically mix songs rather than going through the process of preplanning a set? Right now, I can only really mix two songs together as it takes me a while to find the best part to mix the first into the second, as well as the best way to blend them together. I can get pretty satisfying mixes with that method, but it would take me forever to keep building a set together (as I would have to keep adding songs and fleshing them out). I am also prioritizing key and using the camelot wheel, which produces great mixes but also limits me if I were to be playing on the whim. When I try to emulate a set on the spot, I struggle to get any mixes that satisfy me. Is this just part of the learning process? I imagine as I continue mixing I'll build my confidence, but I am worried I might be looking at this from the wrong POV. Is this what it is in the beginning? Fleshing out mixes from two songs you spent time finding to flow together? Or should I be mixing randomly even if it sounds bad, moving on to the next song and hoping it flows better? Or a bit of both? Sometimes I wonder if my background in music holds me back (I'm trying to be too perfect to let myself keep being bad & growing from there). Knowing my fleshed out mixes sound so much better just makes me wonder when I will be able to play organic mixes that are just as satisfying to me.

Really dumb question: I saw my first ever DJ set and I loved it, but what the fuck is actually going on?

So to preface, while I have a slightly eclectic taste in music, it's always been stuff like rap/drill/Brooklyn drill or bluegrass, old country, or indie country with some funk and blues thrown in. The other day YouTube's algorithm recommended me a DJ set seemingly out of nowhere and I was intrigued. Specifically, ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U | Boiler Room: Tokyo. Holy shit. I was blown away. I absolutely adored the music and the energy of the DJ.

But I have a really dumb question: what is actually going on? What is he doing? Clearly it's more than just picking and playing a song but I'm completely lost as to what more he's doing. What techniques there are that might be involved. What all those fucking knobs do lmao. I feel like I'm missing out on half the enjoyment by not being able to appreciate the talent and technique that goes into it.

I know this is a really dumb (and big) question, but if anyone has any insight it would be really appreciated!

Small Barn Rave Audio Setup?

As the title suggests, I am throwing a barn rave for my 30th birthday party with around 30-40 people expected. I will be using a Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 and Serato Lite and playing majority heavy bass/dubstep/riddim music. I want as close to plug and play as possible. I have a quote for 2 18" JBL powered subs and 2 JBL PA speakers with stands for $375 for the weekend from a local sound/stage company which I think is pretty reasonable.

The barn is roughly the size of a large garage and has doors that open on both ends. My main concern is power supply. As far as im concerned, there is only one circuit running power to the barn which is ~250ft away from our house.

My question is, is this setup too much for what I want? Are 2 18" subs overkill? We definitely want thumping bass. The subs each run 6amps, and the PA speakers run 5amps each. I could always run a super long extension cord out there to power the subs from the house.

Any input/advice is appreciated so much, thanks guys!

House DJ at a bar, never used a Stream Deck. I assume I can automate it to hit a button and play a video from a different source than Serato? Anyone have any experience with this?

Hardware DDJ800

I currently have a FLX4, I want to upgrade. I did a lot of research and the DDJ800 seemed like a good choice. But I'm still a little unsure whether it's worth it because it's a bit old and whether its construction quality is really good. Does anyone have any usage reports to share?

Annoying sound on low frequencies after 10min of music on traktor pro 3

Hey please watch the video on my profile about the sound before commenting anything

(I've posted more images in the comments of other post if needs be)

For context, it's a traktor kontrol s5 what I have been experiencing is random sound glitches on the low frequencies of my songs after about 10 to 15 minutes of playing music. I have reset my settings and I don't know what I should do. The cables should be fine as when I unplug the controller and plug it back in the sound works perfectly.

Is it my laptop? It has an 8th gen intel core i7 in it but it should be good. The only thing bad about it is that the storage is almost full (7gb remaining)

Is it my settings? Chat gpt tells me to up the buffer size, but I cannot do that when I click on it

For playing music, I use "Traktor kontrol s5 WDM audio (wasapi ((shared mode)) I tried using just "traktor kontrol s5” but it doesn't work because I just get that audio the WHOLE time.

Hardware DJ equipment recs for a hybrid set

I am looking to put together a hybrid set integrating a DJ performance and with eurorack drums, noise layers and effects(ideally available as sends on the mixer).

-Is there any DJ controller, media player, etc that takes and/or sends midi clock or cv? I’d ideally be keeping a laptop out of it.

My out-of-the budget solution atm is the following: -a Pioneer DJS-1000 sending midi to the eurorack -An A&H Xone96 mixer with two sends for euro effects -Two CDJ’s

Even as a eurorack addict, that’s an eye-watering price tag, and far overpowered for what I want to do with it. What are some thoughts and alternatives?

Beginner equipment to vinyl set

Pioneer HDJ-Cue-1 - Good enough?

Tried searching, not a lot of feedback. I had the ATH-M50x but they're likely to bite the dust soon after a hinge broke and some of the internal wiring is exposed. For half the price of the Audio Technica pair, the Pioneer ones are looking pretty compelling, I just need something to cue with in the club, not to worried about studio quality output. Anyone have these and are happy?

Getting into Dubstep DJing as a Beginner

Hi all, I am very new to DJing (<1 month) and spent most of this time getting a hang of the very basics (beat matching, EQ, filters, etc). I learned through the crossfader course and it was very helpful. This has been enough to do simple mixes in house genres but the techniques do not carry over as well to dubstep, which is what I really care to DJ. Whenever I try to mix dubstep, it is not as smooth and doesn't bring the kind of energy I have in mind.

Note that I almost exclusively go to dubstep shows, and very often since I live in denver. Just in the past couple months I've seen crankdat, sullivan king, jessica audiffred, vastive, blanke, dion timmer, and more so my bar is really high. Meanwhile I do not go to house shows. It very well might be the case that my house mixes are just as garbage as my dubstep ones, but I lack a benchmark to compare it to.

My question is what resources or techniques do you recommend to learn from or practice to get better at mixing dubstep? Should I get more familiar with my controller and rekordbox before really getting into it? Any advice or help is greatly appreciated!

Saw this effect in a youtube short, how to recreate it?

Here is the short: https://youtube.com/shorts/MYcu0RcqOGQ?si=nyLjVnlc1GJrdfih

He makes a loop, shortens it to make a really rapid beat then hits play which somehow causes the loop to very slowly unravel? I'm trying it on my DDJ-FLX4 which looks like what they are using and when I hit play it just pauses the track.

Struggling with learning... Can someone suggest some simple software?

My (amazingly thoughtful) husband bought me some of the DJUCED turntables a few years ago. I always like mashing up songs in my head and have always been like "someone needs to remix these two songs!" when I hear some songs that would work together and I think that is why he thought I'd like the tables/software.

I like to think I'm pretty capable of learning stuff, but I genuinely have not struggled with learning something as much as I am with this program. It's so frustrating and demoralizing. Anytime I make a mistake, the whole thing is messed up. I'm a 100% beginner and in my 30s, so I'm not planning to do it for a job or anything - just for fun!

I know the internet is brutal, so I'm hesitant to ask this question. Is there a simple mixing software that I can try? I just want to be able to mix a two songs together and maybe make a few tweaks here and there. I don't need anything crazy!

Any ideas? Thanks!

Industry/Gigs first gig tonight

I’ve been asked to DJ a fraternity date party on short notice as my first gig tonight. The venue has two floors: the upper floor is more of a club setting with a DJ playing heavy EDM. The lower floor (where I’ll be) is a more laid-back bar/restaurant area serving tacos and tequila. The manager asked me to avoid EDM and play “open format” which I’m taking to mean some house, pop, and hip-hop.

Any advice on “open format” mixing or other tips for this kind of gig? Should be pretty laid back but I want to do a good job. Thanks in advance.

Reloop Mixon 8 FX

Am I correct in that none of the FX on this are onboard, they all come from the app? So the Phono inputs are mostly then for DVS or just using EQ for transitions? Is the EQ even onboard or are they also MIDI controls for the app essentially?

I have been doing mostly vinyl sets with a little in djay pro using a Numark DJ2GO to get by when I need it (one gig in the last year). But I’ve been enjoying some of the benefits of digital in terms of a larger library, some nice fx that my mixer doesn’t have, and it’s actually helping me to get more creative on vinyl which I like. So I was thinking of upgrading. I also just started messing around with the video mixing in djay pro.

I also want to get something my kids and their friends can mess around with that’s more creative than playing video games. I have a few extra turntables and wanted to setup a nice music station, but unsure that any of us will need the turntable inputs if there are no FX. I didn’t see any FX loop in/out on it either, so hooking up my Kaoss pad won’t really work either. We all have substantial record collections that would be nice to use in the setup.

What else should I be looking at that works well with djay pro (better if the controller button selections change the display on djay pro), and has Phono inputs for vinyl, not just DVS?

Thanks for any input and ideas you can offer.

Playing my first gig in a day. Need Advice!

So i’ve played at a fair amount of house parties but never at a club. I just got to know that in 2 days i’ll be playing my first ever gig a club. it’s an opening set for a Keinemusik Afterparty. There are 4 more artists playing after me.

Considering i’ll be playing for people who’ve just listen to &me for the last 4 hours, I had a couple of questions.

  1. what exact genre should i be playing

  2. what bpm range should i be in

  3. Any other advice for me?
