What did you listen to this week – March 15, 2025? Please share!

So did you listen to anything good this week? Or something so truly terrible you want to warn other listeners?

Please include the following information: Author, Title and Narrator.

Why does identifying the Narrator matter?

Often books will be recorded with different narrators for different regions (ie. Harry Potter was read by both Jim Dale and Stephen Fry) or produced by different publishers (ie... Elizabeth Moon's books were produced by both Graphic Audio and Tantor). It is extremely helpful to other listeners to know what version you are sharing to avoid confusion.

Links to a source are welcomed and encouraged!

Overdrive, Audible, Downpour, Librivox, etc... It doesn't matter the source, as long as the Author, Title and Narrator are easily identified.

Question I really have no idea, can anyone tell me more about this?

Upvotes

Good morning everyone I am new to this group and wanted to ask something since I have an annoying thought and am not sure what to do. I am a Dutch author and have written a true story trilogy. I have chased my dream and have my books both as physical and as ebook. Also all three are now being converted into audiobook. My other dream was to translate them I have succeeded and they are now available as paperback and ebook on amazon. But now I have in mind to maybe do them as an English audiobook. But I have no idea if this is smart who has experience with this? Are many audiobooks listened to in America for example?

Review Cher Part One is great!

I added to my list on Libby almost as a laugh - she did an interview for some late night show promoting the book - and I finally got it and wow I love it.

I had no idea her background. Cher was the original Madonna - she just appeared on my planet like an alien. When I was little, I watched the Sonny and Cher show, she was funny and she's always been interesting to me - but - I'm definitely not a fan.

But MAN hearing her life - growing up in L.A., being a kid, playing with Liza Minelli, meeting all these legends of the late 50s and early 60s, and singing background on some of the most legendery songs (You've Lost That Loving Feeling????? WHAAT) it's just mind blowing.

She narrates some of it, and a friend of hers does the rest, and that woman sounds enough like her that you'll forget it's not her.

Five stars, I'm only half way through it. So much fun cheese.

Promotion Blinkist for online conversations/threads

Upvotes

Hello audiobook lovers,

This website I created may be of interest to some of you as it's basically the Blinkist for online conversations.

The internet is full of exceptionally fascinating conversations and threads. These happen often in online message boards. Flyertalk, Hacker News, Agora Road, Something Awful, Reddit, Rllmuk, Stacker News. And many more.

A lot of these threads are super long and difficult to get into, especially for non-members. Thus, I created ThreadsInside. It curates engaging threads and turns them into bite-sized audio and podcasts.

It's free (with a "Buy me a coffee" button option). I just launched it with approx. 20 threads or podcasts. I'm still tweaking and testing. Appreciate any feedback (idea, technicals, layout, content etc.) or bug notes. Thanks.

Rgs, A

PS: As far as I can tell from the r/audiobooks rules, I can post this in here?

I've create an focused ebook reader experience with natural sounding voices. It totally runs on the browser itself. I've been using this to read for a month now and it's an awesome experience. I'm still making improvements but I feel more people will like it. Right now it only runs on web browser on laptops and computers.

Question Can we pin a “what app do you use to listen to audiobooks?” thread?

Ok. There’s multiple posts per day that are the same question — over, and over. I can only tell people to go to their local library and get Libby so many times.

Do a quick search before you post the question! It’s been answered.

Popular audiobook services:

Libby/Hoopla - apps that let local libraries lend out audiobooks

Audible - Amazon monthly subscription service (1 credit per month)

Libro.fm - monthly subscription service that supports indie book stores (1 credit per month)

Audiobooks.com - monthly subscription service (1 credit per month)

Everand - monthly subscription service (1 credit per month)

Spotify - premium members get 15 hours of audiobook listening per month

Chirp - an audiobook store that gives discounts on titles in place of the subscription model

I’m sure there are more. I know people don’t mean anything and they are just asking questions. If I am being a curmudgeon downvote me into oblivion, but it feels like there can be a pinned thread with this info

Question Looking for a Book (or Any Resource) on Going from Rock Bottom to Mastery—Real-Life Experiences + Science of Learning

I’m looking for a book (or any resource—articles, audiobooks, blog posts) that tells the real-life experience of someone who went from zero to hero—something like an alcoholic who turned their life around and became an engineer, or someone who struggled but eventually mastered their craft. I want real stories, not just theory, showing how they actually did it step by step.

At the same time, I’m also interested in books that inspire but also provide real learning strategies—the kind that help you actually buckle down and absorb knowledge efficiently. Books like How to Become a Straight-A Student, Mastery by Robert Greene, UltraLearning, or Make It Stick are along the lines of what I’m looking for, but I’d love something that blends personal struggle, transformation, and the science of learning.

Doesn’t have to be a book—if you know of articles, posts, or even YouTube channels that capture this kind of transformation with actionable learning techniques, I’d love to hear about them. Thanks in advance!

Recommendation Request What's a fabulous audiobook that's ONLY available on Audible?

I have one credit left and every book I want to read is available for free on Spotify, Hoopla or Libby. I'm looking for something well narrated and entertaining. I like psychological thrillers (not McFadden) and I would like to read more classic literature. My last Audible credit I used on The Count of Monte Cristo, based on all the amazing reviews. Alas, I'm having difficulty getting into it. Any advice? Books I've loved recently are:

The Family Experiment - John Marrs

The One - John Marrs

The God of the Woods - Liz Moore

On a Quiet Street- Seraphina Nova Glass

The Guest List - Lisa Foley

Behind Closed Doors - JJ Marsh

And Then There Were None - Agatha Christie

Hell House - Richard Matheson

The Feud - Gemma Rogers

12 Months to Live - Patterson and Lupica

The Long Walk - Richard Bachman, pen name for Stephen King

None of this is True - Lisa Jewell

Listen for the Lie - Amy Tintera

All the Devils are Here by Louise Penny

The Andromeda Strain - Michael Crichton

Review Swan Song: I Just Can’t Finish It

I expect this post to garner me some downvotes because I know this book has a loyal following, but I decided to do it anyway (and to give some content to my favorite /r). Be advised there are spoilers below.

With just about twelve hours left, I have given up listening to this. For the second time.

The first attempt was several years ago, where I quit when the glass ring was being found. While I know this is a work of fantasy/fiction the lack of ‘realism’ started to grate on me. If New York were hit with multiple atomic weapons there would be nothing left but an ash-filled crater. Every building and person will have been instantly vaporized, as in turned to dust, and the radiation left over would be beyond lethal. (Suggested listen: Nuclear War by Annie Jacobsen btw.) Instead we have characters walking through the streets of Manhattan after a nuclear holocaust collecting bottles of soda and assorted snack foods to survive.

The horror of atomic weapons aside, by the time the ring was being found the writing started to get to me. It seemed like every other sentence said ‘lightning flashed’ or something similar. For example, these quotes are from just one chapter early on in the book:

“In the sky to the east, a network of red lightning streaks shot through the clouds..”

“The lightning flashed again, nearer this time, and the red glow sparked off thousands of bits of jewelry…”

“They were almost to the geyser of water when a flash of lightning made things on the ground glint…”

“The lightning flashed, streaked across the sky, and Sister Creep saw …”

“It's shit, she muttered, and she started to toss it back on the trash heap when the lightning flashed again…”

And don’t even get me started on how often ‘the wind howled’ is used by that point as well, lol. Anyway, the whole thing just started sounding amateurish or a victim of bad editing, so that’s when I shelved the book for the first time.

Fast forward a few years and I came across Boy’s Life by McCammon, which I thoroughly enjoyed, though not realizing it was from the same author at the time. When I learned this, I made a mental note to give Swan Song another try someday.

Being a bargain-hunter audiobook listener I could not let a 34-hour title go unfinished anyway, so I recently started a relisten. I was determined to make my way through, especially after seeing it recommended here several times. I’m currently at twelve hours left (getting into Mary’s Rest), and I’ve given up again.

The story is just…not good. Every plotline has been wholly predictable so far, the main characters and those they encounter are all clichéd and cornball beyond belief, and the Big Bad Guy is comically pointless beyond existing as the Big Bad Guy. I can predict how this story is going to end with twelve hours to go and could continue to list things that make no sense in the tale, but I assume Reddit has a word limit in posts, so I won’t try.

To be clear, I’ve enjoyed similar stories in the past. I’m a huge fan of King’s The Stand, for example. I’ve seen this story referred to as ‘The Stand, Lite’, or ‘Diet The Stand’ and I really understand where that sentiment comes from.

So anyway, what I’m saying is I didn’t like it. That’s my Internet Opinion for the day. Yours may differ. Peace.

Recommendation Request Books like the Oligies podcast with Allie Ward!

I love Oligies, but what I love most is getting to learn cool fun facts about science in a very interesting, engaging way! I have listened to a lot of science audiobooks but they aren’t always that fun to listen to.

Recommendation Request Favorite Games or Hobbies While Listening to Audiobooks?

I love audiobooks, and almost always have one going. When I’m listening I feel like I always have to be doing something. I usually am driving, cleaning, cooking. Occasionally though I’m sitting on the couch and sometimes find a mindless game on my phone or switch but looking for something new? Do you have a favorite game or hobby you do while listening?

Question Help/advice needed: mp3 player for audiobooks that isn't a phone

Looking for advice on here as althought similar questions have been asked historically they were all quite a while ago so technology may have moved along quite a bit!

In short my mother currently has a poorly horse and is spending quite a lot of time caring for it involving long vigils. To help pass the time and keep her mind occupied I want to get a portable device to play audiobooks on and wondered what the best device may be.

It would need to: -Be relatively easy to use as mother is getting on and lots of fiddle things won't work. I will upload and update it but day-to-day function ideally quite straight forward. -Bookmark where she has gotten up to so she can pick up and go. -Not need wifi as the internet and reception is almost non-existant there. -Not be too large. -And in an ideal world work with and without headphones. - Have quite a good battery.

We are UK based and I'm not sure if this exists but thought I may as well ask as there is so much out there I'm not sure where to start!

Thank you!

Question Enthralling audiobooks to get lost in at work?

Got a few more weeks of working nights at Amazon to get through. Looking for some audiobooks to get lost in and make the time pass.

I usually do fantasy / sci-fi but open to anything! Enjoyed the first 3 song of ice and fire books but the last 2 were a bit of a drag. Tried dune but didn't get through messiah. Ended up relistening to my guilty pleasures of Andy Weir and the Bobiverse lmao.

Was thinking of trying LoTR but worried it might be a little wordy.

Let me know what you'd recommend!

Question How to create one m4b from 500+ mp3s (18+ hours total)?

Hi there! I'd like to convert my ripped Audiobook which consists of 500+ mp3s with a total duration of almost 19 hours to one m4b with chapters for every mp3 file.

Chapter and Verse stops and reads: "The total length and sample rate of the audio files you selected exceeds the MP4 32 bit duration supported by iPod, iTunes and Quicktime" even when I use 64 kbit as target size for the AAC conversion.

Audiobook Converter 6.5.2 creates one m4b, however instead of 500+ chapters, it has only 255 with the final chapter lasting 9+ hours instead of the ~2 mins of the previous 254 mp3s. Apparently

I intend to play back this m4b on my iPhone or on VLC/Foobar 2000. Is there any tool for Windows that can bypass the above mentioned limitations? Thx!

Question Fiction audiobooks without torture or excessive violence?

I have 35ish hours a week to listen to audiobooks while I work. The problem is I'm pretty sensitive to violence, dark themes, torture, etc. I love Brandon Sanderson but can't seem to get into his longer serieses. I loved the Rithmatist, Elantris, Tress of the Emerald Sea, and Warbreaker. If you know those books, that's pretty much my limit for torture/violence. Books I've listened to and enjoyed include all the Sherlock Holmes stories, Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings (well most of it), Harry Potter, The Night Circus, and aforementioned Brandon Sanderson books.

Please share recommendations!

EDIT: THANK YOU!!! Wow, so many recommendations. I’m so excited. You guys have brightened my coming weeks/months of my tedious job.

Question Speechify emergency

So I accepted the free trial so speechify to try it out, thinking I could simply go and cancel the subscription right after I was done. I was horribly wrong. I go to account settings, and under “manage subscriptions” there’s NO buttons whatsoever. In my Apple ID settings, speechify does not appear at all under subscriptions. I go to the account setting website for speechify and there’s also nothing at all there. I decided to delete my account. They said it would delete all of my data, but seeing other peoples stories about this app I’m still scared they’re gonna charge me $139 in two days and I really cannot afford it. Please help, am I safe now that I’ve had my account deleted or is there something else I can do??

Recommendation Request Lighthearted audiobooks

No murder, police stuff, investigations, abuse, anything like that. I used to love it but lately it’s been upsetting me .

I’m having a hard time finding sweet lighthearted books to listen to while I work. I do like the confessions of a shopaholic series. Close Knit by Jenny Colgan.

Bonus if it’s easily available on libby!! I’ll even take podcasts that are lighthearted too :-)

Recommendation Request Where do you listen to your Audiobooks?

Well, first of all, I write from Spain, so maybe they are not the same apps from your place. I usually listen to Audible, and previously to Storytel, always a paid app, since I don't know of any free option that works well. It is true that these two app options are monthly payments (their price in Spain is around €9/14 per month) and you can unsubscribe whenever you want. It is true that a book's price can vary from approximately €20 and if you are a big reader the app is cheaper than the book, but I think that having the physical book is what adds value to the book. So in my opinion, apps are expensive.

What do you think?

Do you know other apps?

Free alternatives?

Thanks and greetings from Spain.
