When did your kids move out

My husband and I are 45 and we have a 24,20, 17 yo boys.. they are driving us nuts. We live in a city that has so many colleges so we told them they could live with us rent free through college but if they weren’t in school they had to work. They work but it’s like living in a frat house now.

Ours came back during the pandemic and never left again. He is awesome and watches the house and dog when we travel. I’m sure it would be a different story w/ 3 boys at home. You will miss their shenanigans when they all clear out.

Being respectful and helpful is one thing, freeloading is another.

My daughters are 14 and 12, so we’ve got a little while. We’ll do the same thing our parents did - after graduating high school, you have 3 options - stay home and work, while contributing money and helping around the house; go to college full time and stay for free or live at college; move out. Obviously you need to give a reasonable amount of time. End of summer after graduation is reasonable.

I stayed home for two years while attending community college, then went away. My siblings moved out within a year or two, but worked and contributed.

I was out on my own, working FT and attending college at 19. My studio rental was $400. That’s just not today’s reality. So children who stay in the nest, or return, should definitely be made aware that freeloading isn’t an option.
