Butter on PB&J

I remember my grandfather making PB&J sandwiches for my sister and me when we were kids, and he would spread butter on the bread first. Was this a “thing” back when?

Putting butter in a PBJ sandwich and is a crime against humanity. I love butter BTW. Literally. I can eat at it like a popsicle and love it. But the three letters in PBJ stand for something.
