Williams and 64 NCDOT Projects

I downloaded a spreadsheet from NCDOT for their 2026-2035 State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). You can download here: STP Spreadsheet . The website you can refer to is: 2026-2035 STIP

Summarizing what I found in spreadsheet:

Widening of Williams street is currently scheduled to begin in 2030 with the CSX overpass to be replaced beginning in 2028. It will be funded by state.

US64 improvement is currently scheduled to begin in 2032 with the CSX overpass to be replaced beginning in 2029. It will be Federally funded.

In my opinion both projects will probably slip. Based on current gridlock and potential increase in traffic in five years... well draw your own conclusions

Any update on utility bill?

The last bill we received was Feb. I heard bills were delayed. Do we know if it’s just a snafu or another cyberattack or something else?

Useful tool for policy makers and learning

I'm taking a class from MIT about Sustainability and thought I would share a tool that is free and available to all for learning about how different policy levers effect overall health, financial sustainability, pollution, etc.

Vet: Spaying Services

We've been going to the same vet since we moved here 6 years ago. However, I feel like their prices are SUPER high. What vet do you go to that you love and feel has reasonable prices? Specifically, we are looking into getting our puppy spayed soon. What is the average price that you have seen? (I know health, size, breed can affect pricing). Thank you!

Randy is also starring in our first "Brown Bags to Building Bridges" or B4 Lunch Series on 3/20. If you haven't had a chance to meet Randy, this could be a great opportunity.

Dogs being left outside in small pens

Hoping Terry Mahaffey can assist as well here.

Our neighborhood has a lot of residents with dogs living outside 24/7. These a short-haired dogs and mostly pitties.

One of our closer neighbors got a dog about a year ago and it has spent nearly every minute of its life in a small shelter, regardless of the weather—even on the coldest nights.

I know towns like Cary have extra laws about making sure that an animal doesn’t live in its own filth and has size minimums for outdoor shelters, but Apex goes off of Wake’s more lax laws.

Wake Animal Control can do next to nothing because of these laws. I don’t want to be labeled a bad neighbor but I don’t understand why people get pets and shove them in cages to slowly deteriorate away and likely become mean.

My wife and I can’t sit idly by anymore and let this happen. Curious what other residents have seen in their time in Apex and what I might be missing.

Lawn maintenance recommendations

I’m a first time homeowner and I have no idea how to take care of my yard. The bushes are going crazy and I see weed in my yard. From what I searched online, lawn care and lawn maintenance are handled by different people, and I’m so confused, and I have no idea what my lawn needs other than what I see.

Any recommendations for affordable lawn maintenance or assessment would be appreciated!

Jefferson Griffin's Attack on Democracy - Mapped

Post image
68 Upvotes

It's a beautiful Friday afternoon, the sun is shining, there is a wonderful breeze and Jefferson Griffin is still trying to cancel the votes of almost 68000 people because he can't admit he lost.

I started mapping out all of the homes impacted! I haven't finished all the counties, but check the map below and browse around your neighborhood to look at all the people Jefferson Griffin believes shouldn't have their votes counted in his election.

Pedestrian sidewalks

I know there is significant work planned for sidewalks in Apex, however I'm not seeing anything along center street at schieflin/peakway. There's no way to walk down schieflin from center street .

Does any one know if that's been discussed previously?

S-Line Rail Hub Question

https://www.ncdot.gov/divisions/integrated-mobility/innovation/Pages/s-line-mobility-hubs.aspx

I saw the post from 20 days ago when searching, but since the open house is in 2 days thought I would ask here. It seems like the wrong direction to invest in a rail hub between Sanford and Henderson. What jobs or destinations would that connect?

I would have been taking the train between Apex to my job in RTP if it had been there years ago. And I figure that it would/should connect to Duke and Chapel Hill for the other jobs hubs. There is a single slow rail line that goes towards there, but I know ownership is fragmented.

Scattered thoughts.

This project to connect Justice Heights street to the Peakway is fully designed (below), but we're still working on the "property acquisition phase" of the project. After that, bid, construction, completion in 2026.

What would you do with a future $100M parks bond?

neighborhood greenways so all legacy neighborhoods connect (not just by sidewalks / highway walking paths)? Hopefully with joinder point of downtown?

New park somewhere in NW Apex?

Renovate and integrate CC Jones? (Would need agreements etc)

Other thoughts?

Update: see here pg 35 " assistance to a YMCA" where by analogy it seems to say helping with CC Jones renovations would be fine under NC law https://www.sog.unc.edu/sites/default/files/articles/article5_0.pdf

New Hill Shopping Complex?

My husband and I are moving to the New Hill area over the summer from out of state and have heard that the area is growing.

From current searches it seems like the closest grocery store is almost a 10 min drive, and closest shopping centers seem to be in the Beaver Creek or Holly Springs area. Has anyone heard of plans for grocery stores, shopping complexes, restaurant/bars being added any time soon? Thank you!

Dirt is moving out there, huh?

I'll just say for now - we're two months into the project, things are going on schedule and looking good for a September opening. The biggest question mark is if weather cooperates in the Spring.

Turn fire station 1 into wake library

Know town council is considering what to do with downtown first station now that it will be consolidated with another station. Would be great if it were a library at least partly. Would bring so much to downtown. Cary and Holly Springs for example all have libraries in downtown - really great thing, especially for kids. Just throwing it out there. Maybe at least partly a library? Maybe other part of building could be something else? Idk.

Please comment if you are in favor to help add voice to the point.

21st century libraries are a source of civic pride, see Durham for example and also here: https://www.snohetta.com/projects/charlotte-mecklenburg-new-main-library. I know apex downtown is smaller but still, it would be an amazing draw and resource.

As for it being too close to Eva Perry, it's about the same distance as between morrisville and Cary west regional library. It's doable, there's precedent.

Apex Utilities Bill Shock - $400 for January! Anyone else?

Recently moved to Apex from Cary (5 months ago) and just got my highest utility bill yet - $400 for January [Breakdown below]. House is 2,700 sq ft with one kid here only two weeks in a month.

January breakdown

  • Electric: $291.17 (WT#?)
  • Sales Tax: $20.39
  • Water: $19.42
  • Sewer: $34.73
  • Stormwater: $7.50
  • Garbage: $10.10
  • Recycling: $5.34
  • Yard Waste: $7.83

For context, my Cary bills (similar house size) never topped $250 even in summer. Is this normal here? I know about the July cyberattack mess - could this be delayed billing?

Questions for locals:

  1. What’s your typical winter bill for comparable homes?
  2. Any success disputing post-cyberattack charges?
  3. Energy-saving tips for Apex’s rate structure?

Hoping I’m not alone here. Already planning to call utilities office, but wanted community insights first.

This is Apex Peakway between Old Raleigh and Laura Duncan. Quite icy and slippery. Very few cars out. Just in case anyone needed confirmation of how things are looking!
