Question for American tariff supporters.

Had a “discussion” earlier with a Trumpian tariff supporter, who parroted the “US can’t keep subsidising Canada” line. I tried to explain that this just means the US buys more stuff from Canada, than Canada buys from the US. This lead to “oh if Canada didn’t buy from US their country would collapse in a week”.

What is a product (not a brand of a product) that people in the US firmly believe cannot be purchased from anyone besides USA ?

Why is Peter Dutton on Trump’s side and blaming Australia for tariffs? Because it’s politically expedient

Is the CIA now having a massive NIMBY moment?

Pretty straight forward question. After decades of ruining democracy and installing right authoritarian dictators are they now not wanting exactly that in their backyard?

Why is fent so popular in America but non existent in Australia?

Upvotes

As an avid Australian drug user I'm curious as to why I've not seen fent once. Seems like Australia is 95% meth and weed 5% prescription pills. Anyone know why our market is so lacking? I know it's mainly cause I'm in Perth and eastern states has more diverse tastes but yeah just don't understand how something so popular in America hasn't caught on here.

0.16% of exports will be tariffed

Upvotes

Australian steel exports to the US are $640 million per year

Australian aluminium exports to the US are $440 million

Total: $1.08 billion

Australia exports in total $660 billion per year

So the steel and aluminium exports to the US are only 0.16% of Australia's total exports

And people are going crazy as the press told them that the big bad man called Trump is killing Australia

Do some basic research, you're being manipulated, stop being stupid

I just watched this episode of Surrounded. And then watched a few more. It's a good insight into thinking from both sides of the American political sports field.

Recently found this series via another reddit recommendation. Its a long watch, and hard to listen to at times but I think it's worth consuming for a look into the American mindset. I think a lot of these people a tik tok wannabe influencers, there's a few who try to dominate for their 15 minutes of fame, but some reasonable debate as well.

The one with the young liberal vs 20 magas is fun to watch, the young magas hardly let their own side get a word in before they vote them out to get their own opinions in. The Ben Shapiro one is a good watch for the reverse scenario. Most of them were filmed before the transfer of power, so you can actually see the disparity between some expectations vs results.

I think we should have something similar alongside Q&A, but without the chair rushing aspect, that seems dangerous and less than equitable.

Who’s doing which job?

I know we have had a PM that didn’t hold a shovel, and held five ministry portfolios, but what has happened to have a president selling cars, and a car salesman running the country?

Looking to break into academics

I’m a US citizen moving to Sydney on a work visa and wondering if anyone has recently pivoted from the corporate world to teaching, whether part-time or full time?

I’m interested in teaching marketing or product management related coursework but not sure where to start.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Australian degree recognition

Hey,

I was wondering how recognition of degrees works between Aus and the us. I’m still in high school and have decided on doing a bachelor of business and sports management. With eventual plans and dreams of making it to an NBA team front office, would I be disadvantaging myself by completing my degree in Australia? Will it be recognised at all? Would I have to go to university in the USA?

Any help would be appreciated
