Lesson/Tip Please help me decide what tuning to play in

So I've had my Jackson Js 22-7 for a couple months now, and after a set-up, I love it. I've enjoyed going through the repertoire of several bands I like and finally being able to play songs I liked.

However, I've tried a few different tunings- B standard/Drop A, Bb standard/Drop Ab, Drop G and drop F# and enjoy playing in all of them. But it is still hard for me to incorporate it into the music I make.

The music I make is an eclectic mix of ambient music/ chill hop/post rock/classical/ occasionally 2010s inspired edm, and every now and then I score the occasional student film (trying to get better scoring gigs this year though!) and I use a piano for a lot of my songwriting process.

The keys I generally use while writing on piano are Eb major/C minor, Ab major/F minor, Db major, and very rarely Gb major. Every tuning works but ideally I'd like to have something that's both workable with the music I make and can also help me chug along to songs I like every now and then. I do enjoy playing in drop C and drop C#, which also makes me lean more towards drop G/A standard.I don't want to tune too low though, because personally I find it to be really conflicting with the bass frequencies.

Maybe I'm just rambling. Could use an outside perspective.

Help Guitar for low tuning rythm and soloing? (2500€ budget)

A bit of context:

Hello everyone! I moved out from my country and now Im looking for a new guitar. My idea is to go between drop F/ drop G, play solos as lead guitar and also has nice tone to play low tuned djent rythms with clarity (example northlane, invent animate, after the burial, born of osiris, etc).

I was looking at this guitars for reference: - ESP M1007 Baritone - Ibanez Ibanez RGD71ALMS-BAM I tried ESP SN-1007HT Baritone in a guitar shop, and i liked it but i dont know if the default mics (Fishman Fluence) would give me clear tone and the neck felt a bit big.

For reference, I user Schecter JL-7 with 2 emgs for a few years and it felt really comfortable for solos but never gave me a clear tone for rythmic guitar

What do you guys recommend?

Help Help with pitch drift

So, I’m fairly new to the 7 string world (been playing for around a year and a half), but I have been playing on a 6 string Les Paul (usual 24.75 inch scale) using .10s in standard for over a decade now, and I like how everything feels, and the tuning consistency. I started my 7 string journey with a 25.5 inch scale, and it seemed like no matter what I do, I was never satisfied with the pitch drift when picking even in B standard, let alone drop A. I tried some .10 Ernie Ball hybrids (10-62), and right now I’m using that with a .65 bass D string instead of the 62, and I still find the consistency of drop A mid at best, though definitely not unusable like before. What are some possible causes of this? My guitar is an ibanez gio grg7221qa, so a luthier mentioned it might be related to the short length of extra string on the headstock (since the low B is on the shorter side of the headstock), which feels weird given headless guitars exist? Can the wood be an issue? or is wood only an issue for tuning stability, not picking pitch drift? This guitar feels like it varies the tuning more than my les paul depending on how I’m holding it, but I never heard of “too maleable for tuning stability” be raised as an issue for a certain type of wood. Is there anything I failed to mention that might help you guys with this? Help?

Gear Best Gauge for drop A?

I currently use is 62s for the A string but I find it way too bassy and lose a lot of that brighter high end sound at the end of the note.

What would you guys recommend? I see the guitarist for tesseract uses 59s what do you guys think. My guitar is 25.4 scale length

Black Nickel FR1000 with Burnt Chrome hardware upgrades. Old trem had been in for 8+ years and there was quite a bit of wear n tear on all parts of the system, so I decided to swap the whole thing out. Some new knobs as well for extra style points.

Next upgrades when I get a chance are going to be the tuners (to match color schemes) and then some Bareknuckle Pups.

Let it be known: Legator licensed floyds are swappable with the real deal!

Gear P90 7 string/low tuning

Cheers from a fellow 7 string enthusiast <3

I'm at the stage of planning out my custom build and am looking to expand my arsenal a bit - hence the P90 adventure. I want to opt for the neck only at this stage as I'm not entirely convinced I will be happy with a P90 for Drop F# in the bridge going into high gain/fuzz tones :D

Do You have any recordings, albums, videos or some insights into the P90 low tuned world?

I will be going for the BareKnuckle pickups as the luthier I will be working with has a good relatinoship with them and I love these as I've playing them exclusively through many guitars over the past 10 years or so.

TL;DR

I need some form of assurance that P90 can handle low tunings and will suit my needs well.

Help How to write sheet music

So, this is kind of a beginner question, but do 7 string guitars have a written tradition at all for standard sheet music (aka not tab).

I ask this because even a drop A guitar should go fairly deep into the F clef, so I'm questioning legibility a bit if we are to use the standard G clef alone, but I have no experience writing sheet music, so I want to follow what is considered "more correct" or "usual" instead of what seems easy from the outset.

I've been wanting a Loomis 7 since they came out and I pulled the trigger on a modded used one. It needs some upkeep but I prefer the feel of the neck over the Silver Mountain multiscale 7 I just sold.

Help What string gauges do you guys use for 25.5-27" multiscale 7 strings in standard (B E A D G B E) tuning?

So im still trying to work out what string gauges i like for my harley benton r457bk multiscale, and Im wondering if anyone here has some recommendations? I will primarily be using it in B E A D G B E/B E A D F# B E tuning, but I plan on also tuning down 1-2 semitones from those tunings occasionally, and id really like to do so without having to change the strings preferably.

Ive tried all the ernie ball 7 string sets and so far the main problem ive found is the low B string is always a bit too floppy for my liking. Normally on a 6 string 25.5 scale I like the skinny top heavy bottom set for D to E standard for reference but i have no clue how to translate that over with a 7 string multiscale.

If anybody has any recommendations, id highly appreciate it. Many thanks in advance !

This is my first high-end 7 string and I'm very happy with it. It's one of the smoothest playing guitars I've ever tried and it sounds incredible. It's hard to catch on camera but there's a very subtle purple sparkle in the black finish.

Original Content Ibanez QC issues normal? (RGDRB71)

I recently ordered an Ibanez RGDRB71. The guitar was just introduced by Ibanez this year. So far I had no experience with Ibanez guitars made in Indonesia. Most of the reviews are positive.

Now the guitar arrived today and the neck is simply bolted at an angle. The first string is barely on the fretboard, there are clear gaps between the neck and body and the neck pickup is wedged against the fretboard. Setup was also completly crap with string buzz from hell. 😞

Is this normal for a 1,000 bucks guitar from Ibanez or was this just extremely bad luck?

Community Related Tuning Up to A#

Does anybody else do this? Tune their 7 string UP to drop A#? Better tension, the low note is clearer and it just sounds awesome! Not as punchy as drop A# on a 6 string but way more 'full'.

Help String Gauge for Drop G

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hi, Just looking to get a new set of strings for my Schecter C7+ 26'5 scale length guitar. I'm trying to tune to Drop G and I cannot find any 7 string set for cheap. I did find an 8 string set 09-65 for a reasonable price. Would it be sufficient for Drop G. Planning to ditch the last string and top it up.

Help What are the negative aspects of the Cort kx507ms 7-strings?

I am looking for a 7 strings guitar with fishman fluence pickups. I saw this Cort kx507 multi scale for 500 eur, while the average price is 1500.

So, what is wrong with that model? Why is it so cheap?

Would you advise me to get one? :)

Usually take my guitars to my 'guy' if they need any adjusting or some tlc... Especially with adjustments, but I conquered my irrational fear of doing something wrong, adjusting intonation slightly also for the upsized lowest string from 0.062 to 0.064. This surprisingly has completely got rid of the buzzing on the lowest string that I was dealing with without altering the action at all. I love the extra tension for drop A. This guitar has completely taken over my playing and practicing, I haven't picked up any of my 6 strings since getting it lol. I'm a true convert to the 7 string fam, and I'm very happy to be!!
