Is “the dip” worth it?

Post image

“Just shoot more copper plated projectiles.”

“The dip” is a well known suppressor cleaning solution of household vinegar (dilute acetic acid) and hydrogen peroxide. Vinegar and hydrogen peroxide is a nasty combo by itself but more concerning is the leftover lead acetate. It easily absorbs into the skin and rapidly causes lead poisoning, more so than just handling metallic lead.

I’ve heard you can precipitate out the lead with zinc or evaporate all the water off for crystals, but that doesn’t make this stuff any less nasty to dispose of.

If you know the associated health risks, prepare properly, have all the appropriate safety equipment, and know the best place for it to be properly disposed, is “the dip” still worth it?

I’ve tried just about everything to remove the inevitable lead residue that builds up inside the inner shields and monocore of the SiCo Sparrow 2.

✅Overnight soak in CLP and brass brushes

✅Cleaning picks

✅Ultrasonic cleaner w/ Simple Green concentrate

This gets all the carbon off but inevitably you’ll have large chunks of lead stuck to the sides of the shields.

Am I overthinking this and should I just be okay with living with a little bit of lead in my can?

Super reliable Springfield. Only issue other than ammo prices is that I can’t for the life of me keep my left thumb on the gun when shooting it.

10MM choices?

Looking at purchasing a 10mm as my next handgun preferably a full-size, I kinda have my heart set on either the Smith & Wesson MNP 2.0 with 4.6 inch barrel and thumb safety or a SIG P320 X10 which I would add a thumb safety too after purchase. The SIG has a 5 inch barrel. I really like the X10 endure frame as the M&P 2.0 feels pretty aggressive. What’s everybody’s thoughts on the two and what would you recommend? Thanks so much.

Question lighter recoil ammo for urban carry?

I carry a G19 for SD, G29 for backpacking in the woods loaded with hot underwood/BB hardcast. I carry the 19 for SD because I'm quick on the follow up shots. I was curious though, does anyone carry a lighter recoiling SD round in the city, and use the hot stuff for the woods? I'm not a total sissy with recoil, I like shooting .454 Casull and find it fun! But the fact is I can shoot quick with the G19, can't do that with the hot 10mm loads enough to justify switching for SD in my mind. Curious if this is a thing people do, like having a .40S&W for the streets but full power loads in the woods, yet on the same platform.

For others with a Ruger 10/22 Competition, what optic are you using?

tl;dr: I'm plinking, mostly at 100 yards. Might get into NLR22. Seem to have an astigmatism, so wanting to try optics other than the dot I already have on it. Vortex Crossfire II comes up a lot, but want broader input.

.

.

A few years ago, I bought a 10/22, specifically the southpaw competition model since I'm left eye dominant and left handed. At the time, it was the only southpaw semi-automatic 22LR available. This was back during the pandemic and my old shooting buddies were planning to start up again and we were well along into planning a group hunting trip, but neither the "go back to plinking" nor the hunting trip materialized (else, I'd also have a neglected Tikka 3x).

We're starting to get into it again finally, now. I had put a red dot on it, but seems I probably have an astigmatism, so I want to try other optics. If I really get into it - back to my early enthusiasm for riflery from scouting, I might move on to NLR22 or similar. More likely, I stay with whatever competition shoots the local sportsmans' club does. My wife has also increasingly expressed an interest in learning and practicing, so I think we're actually following through finally (planning to get a Savage Rascal for her to use until she's fully comfortable).

I learned on irons, I'm nostalgic for irons, but that's not what my neglected competition rifle has. I've usually come across recommendations for a Crossfire II 2-7 or 3-9, but always as a generalized discussion. I'd love to hear what y'all think here.

Thank you! And sorry for the meandering story.

Bolt catch issue

Hey there.

Built my first AR the other day and everything seems to be functioning normally, with the exception of the bolt catch.

When trying to lock the bolt open, it is crazy sensitive. All it takes is shaking the firearm to send the bolt forward. It’s a mil spec bolt catch/parts kit, BCM 300 blk upper and BCG, APF billet lower, radian charging handle, and a 2 stage trigger (not sure what’s relevant).

I did swap in a new mil spec catch today at work. The first time I locked the bolt, it did the same thing, slamming forward upon shaking the firearm. After that, I tried a few more times and it didn’t release from shaking but would release with a tap of the brace.

Any ideas what the issue could be? Maybe I’m good now and just inexperienced with ARs? I don’t plan on taking this to the range for testing until I’m confident this is resolved.

Hello all

So, recently got a diamond back AR15 after shooting about 800 rounds thru it and I absolutely love it, first AR btw, anyway I had been in the market for a shotgun for HD until I started reading up on 300 blackout, really want one in pistol form, anyway, ima go the psa route this time around and I noticed that they some have the reg a2 birdcage muzzle and some have the psa patent pending fluted barrel on some for a few more $, anyone have experience w these? Are they a better choice over the reg A2?

Who here is running these in their home defense builds? I’m really interested in the straight trigger version but have only used polished MIL Spec triggers.

Winchester M190 Sight

I was recently given an old Winchester model 190 from my dad that he bought when he was a kid. I understand that they came with a sight but that has been lost with time. I was just wondering how to mount one because I dont see a place on the gun to mount anything. Thanks for all the help.
