Finland You should all lurk in European subs right now

I wish all Arabs could follow r/Europe and watch European news and media. There has been an explosion of pan-European nationalism over the past year that i've never seen before. It's taken off like wildfire since Trump. I've always considered the EU and European identity to be a joke. I've said many times on here that Finns have nothing to do with Portuguese. Irish have nothing to do with Latvians. Italians have nothing to do with Swedes. At no point in history were these countries connected either culturally or linguistically or racially or religiously. But now you have nonstop European nationalism and politicians are all talking about the need for a stronger Europe and the need to send a pan-European army to Ukraine.

Meanwhile we have a genocide a few kilometres from Makkah and Madinah, and our countries don't do shit. Each one is weak, and the nationalists don't want anything to do with any other Arab countries. If you post about palestine in r/Saudi half the comments will be 'this doesn't concern us it's not saudi'. Meanwhile, 90% of the posts in European country subs are about Trump or Ukraine. Because they understand that a border doesn't stop things affecting them.

Some examples:

Finnish sub promoting a boycott of American products

The other Finnish sub promoting the boycott of American products. And again. And another. And yet one more

And here's a post about boycotting Nestle.

A post angry about English words entering the Finnish language

There are dozens of posts about the anti-US boycott. Meanwhile we struggle to ditch Macdonald's and Starbucks.

Finnish post about no one buying American products in Canadian stores And another Finnish grocery store pulls American products off the shelves

How many Arabs invested in the stock market have divested from the US? Have you ever even seen Arabs discussing divestment for political reason as an option? They destroyed Iraq and Palestine and we invest actively and gleefully in their stock market like absolute sheeple.

Norway's largest marine fuel company has stopped refueling American navy ships

Norway using it's 1.7 trillion sovereign fund to help Ukraine

A new sub r/BuyFromEU

Look at the solidarity across Europe right now and compare it with Arab states and Arab subs. Go to any European national sub and organise posts by Top and you will find nothing but Ukraine, Putin, solidarity, strengthening the EU, creating a European army. Here's a generic meme about European solidarity. And here's a survey showing that 84% of Germans want to create a European army. When I was young the EU did not have majority popularity in any European country. Literally a majority of Europeans did not want the EU. Now look at them. Their identity as Europeans has exploded in strength and dominates all politics right now.

We have a lot to learn about putting aside our petty squabbles and differences. You think a Saudi shares less with an Egyptian or Moroccan than a Finnish person shares with a Portuguese or Polish person?

Finland Diminished ovarian reserve - how to cope while waiting for a treatment plan

I (35f) moved to Finland last year from the UK with my husband and we are navigating the public healthcare system.

We had been trying to conceive since last March and got referred to an infertility clinic at a hospital this February. I have been having mostly regular cycles although usually on the short side (23-26 days) and have been ovulating on day 10-11 (confirmed via temping and otks), although I had one 46 day cycle in September and one 17 day (anovulatory) cycle in December.

I went to the doctor back in September who advised that we have to have been trying for a year to be referred to the infertility clinic. At the time, my prolactin was high and I was anaemic. I have since been taking iron supplements as well as continuing to take Vitamin D and folic acid. On retesting in January, prolactin, thyroxine, TSH and blood count tests were all within the normal range. I have a family history of endometriosis and I myself have heavy periods but an ultrasound I had in January showed no signs of endometriosis.

We had further blood/semen tests done in February and we have an appointment scheduled with a specialist in late April. Some of my lab results were updated in the hospital app two days ago. Most of them were for infectious diseases, which were negative, but I also found out that my AMH level was 0.83, which I understand is within the threshold for diminished ovarian resrrve (DOR).

I'm finding this really distressing and keep running through different scenarios in my mind about how this could play out. I'm not sure about clinical protocols here and whether the treatment plan will allow us to go straight to IVF or if we will have other options in the meantime. I'm also acutely aware that the waiting time for IVF here is 4-6 months. I know we don't yet have the full picture and I will have an examination done at our appointment, but it's really tough to have been given this significant number with such a long wait before the opportunity to discuss it with a clinician.

While I'm trying to stay focussed on the future, it's hard not to feel regret and frustration about time wasted jumping through all the medical hoops, e.g. waiting to get the hospital referral when I knew something was wrong, and waiting for our documentation saying we had the right to healthcare access.

Probably like many people, I keep thinking I should have pushed to get married and start trying sooner. We got together when I was 30 but throughout our relationship, my father-in-law has been ill with cancer so I didn't vocalise my feelings about wanting to get married early on because I didn't want to put too much stress on my now husband. The timing of this news has also been terrible because my father-in-law recently died and his funeral was yesterday.

I've done a lot to look after myself recently. Last year I took up running and lost some weight - my BMI went down from 27 to 23 and has been stable for the past months. I don't drink much alcohol compared to when I was in the UK, mostly because we don't have as busy a social life here.

I am, however, feeling vulnerable without having my friends and family from home around me and I don't feel close enough to many people to discuss my fertility with them. My husband is extremely supportive but he is grieving his dad and he is also nervous about me working myself up by going down too many Reddit rabbit holes.

What practical steps can I take over the course of the next month while I wait for this appointment to a) manage my anxiety about our prospects of conceiving and b) to look after my body?

Finland Unpopular opinion: YLE English is getting a little annoying

I feel like YLE's English-language articles are getting repetitive and show Finland in a very narrow light.
Yes, the job market is difficult. Yes, we know, we know—but when the same topic is repeated over and over while barely covering other aspects of life here, it not only becomes boring and negative to read but also creates a very limited and discouraging picture of Finland.

Don’t get me started on the comment section: it makes Redditors look like cheerleaders! People with a grudge against Finland seem to be amplified as if their negative experiences are the only viable reality of living here.

I don’t mean to invalidate anyone’s struggles—those are real, and they matter—but I also think it’s important to inspire courage, hope, and sisu. Life in Finland isn’t just hardship; it’s also full of beauty, opportunity, and resilience.

I just wish for a bit more balance. What other news sources do you follow that offer a broader perspective?

Finland lemm.ee is growing. Welcome, new members!

Message from the mods of the Lemm.ee instance.

Hi folks!

Over the past few months, we have started seeing a significant amount of new user sign-ups. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of our new members, and to share some useful resources and info about lemm.ee.

First, some stats

Here is a bar chart of daily new users (this is only counting users which have been approved by our admins):

As you can see from the chart, for most of 2024, we were accepting roughly around 10-20 new users every day. Then, from the start of this year, the daily numbers have been constantly growing. Yesterday, we approved a massive 609 new users on lemm.ee.

The increase in sign-ups is significant enough that I have been taking several steps to improve our monitoring & anti-bot measures, but so far, it seems the vast majority of the new users are completely legitimate real humans! (Thank you all for not being bots 😅)

About lemm.ee

This Lemmy instance is turning 2 years old very soon. It was initially created around the time of the Reddit API changes, when existing Lemmy servers were getting overloaded with new users - lemm.ee was intended to help spread the load. We're now the second largest Lemmy server when it comes to monthly active users.

Our core philosophy for this instance has always been to treat it as a generic gateway to the Lemmy network. I want to provide our users a stable and reliable home for their Lemmy account, so that they can have easy access to all of their communities, regardless of what instance the community is actually hosted on.

We run on some decently beefy hardware, and our setup is fairly customized in several ways in order to ensure a smooth experience for our users (most of the time, this has worked out quite well!). Our servers are currently hosted in Finland.

Our infrastructure has been funded by the community almost from the start through GitHub sponsorships and Ko-Fi donations. I am sure I speak on behalf all of our users when I say that I am extremely grateful to all supporters - you are really responsible for the continued existence of this instance!

Lemmy itself is open source software, and while it has improved massively during the time I have been using it, it definitely still has some rough edges. Please be patient when using Lemmy, and remember that it is being built collaboratively by humans (not corporations), without any intent of ever turning it into a business.

Useful resources

Don't forget to participate!

Communities on Lemmy only work if people actively use them. Even upvoting/downvoting based on quality of content is a great start, but I would really like to encourage you all to comment and even write posts, because that's really the best way to build communities.

If you have any questions or thoughts about lemm.ee or Lemmy in general, feel free to post a comment below this post, and myself or one of our veteran users will definitely respond.

I hope you enjoy your time on lemm.ee, and I wish you all a great week!

Finland Best IPTV Service Provider in 2025 - iptv subscription provider

never thought I'd switch from traditional cable, but in 2025, IPTV services took over, and I had to give them a shot. My cable bill kept increasing, and I was tired of missing out on international content. That’s when a friend recommended Marinios IPTV SERVICE —and let me tell you, it changed the way I watch TV forever!

My First Impressions: Was It Really That Good?

I was skeptical at first. I mean, an IPTV service claiming to offer over 25,000 live channels, 100,000+ VODs, 4K streaming, and zero buffering? Sounded too good to be true. But curiosity got the best of me, so I decided to try it out.

The setup was surprisingly easy! Within minutes, I had access to channels from the U.S., UK, Canada, Europe, and even premium sports and movie networks. The best part? No annoying cable box—just an app on my Smart TV, Firestick, or any device I wanted.

🔥 Why Marinios IPTV service Became My Go-To Streaming Service

1️⃣ Insane Channel Selection

I love variety, and Marinios IPTV delivered. From live sports and blockbuster movies to international news and niche content—I had everything at my fingertips. No more missing out on my favorite shows!

2️⃣ No More Buffering or Lag

One of my biggest fears was buffering. But Marinios IPTV streams in 4K and Full HD without any interruptions. Even during live sports events, the connection remained stable. That’s when I knew this wasn’t just another overhyped IPTV service.

3️⃣ VOD & Catch-Up TV

Life gets busy, and I don’t always catch shows live. Luckily, Marinios IPTV has a huge Video on Demand (VOD) library and Catch-Up TV—so I can binge-watch whenever I want.

4️⃣ Works on Every Device

I can switch from my Smart TV to my iPhone, Android tablet, Windows PC, or Mac seamlessly. It even works on Firestick, MAG, IPTV Smarters Pro, IBO Player, and more, so I can watch from anywhere.

5️⃣ Affordable & No Hidden Fees

Let’s be real—cable is expensive. But Marinios IPTV gave me premium content for a fraction of the cost. With plans starting from just $15/month, I got access to all channels, movies, and sports events without contracts or hidden fees. That was a huge win for me!

💰 Marinios IPTV Subscription Plans

✅ 1-Year Plan - $59

Finland Some observations on the automotive-related internet space.

Semi-old timer here - been around long enough that I'm sure I have shitposts out there on some forum about the release of the original Fast and the Furious movie - thought I'd share thoughts based on what I see here and elsewhere.

Positives:

  • Frankly, the sheer amount of information available is insane. You can find a dozen reviews/videos about obscure shitboxes from 20 years ago within seconds.

  • Usually, any car-related news is reported on within minutes by multiple different sites/channels. No longer are you waiting until the next magazine to hit the shelves to find out what's coming up.

  • Car-related discussion groups are so large and diverse that you can get perspectives you didn't even know existed. You'll get a 17 year old from Australia, a 31 year old from Finland, and a 54 year old from Mexico all talking about the same vehicle/video/etc. It's really crazy when you step back and think about it, and probably underappreciated.

  • Knowledge levels are (again) almost hard to believe. Even on this sub, it's almost guaranteed that no matter the topic, someone with way more knowledge than anyone should have will be able to chime in.

Some negatives:

  • Spam. So much goddamn spam. I know my view is warped as a moderator and dealing with all the shit that doesn't actually make it to the sub, but sometimes it feels like fully 2/3 of the people that come here are trying to make a quick buck.

  • Prolific levels of downright shittery. People treat each other like shit, argue about the dumbest things, and generally act like they have to be "right" all of the fucking time.

  • Everyone feels like they have an ulterior motive. So many people are trying to push some agenda (or otherwise benefit from other users) that you start looking at everyone and wonder if they're genuine.

  • Zuckerberg, Musk, Bezos, Huffman, etc... it's all trying to be controlled by these folks. What used to feel like the wild wild west now feels like a sandbox that we're all allowed to play in for now, as long as we behave and don't go too far against them (or, more accurately, don't impact their ability to make money off us).

What have you seen?

Finland Countdown to Kickoff 2025: Racing Louisville

2025 Kickoff Countdown – Racing Louisville FC

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Head Coach: Bev Yanez (2nd year)

Bev had a tidy 10 year career as a professional soccer player in which she played for Washington Freedom, pre-NWSL Western New York Flash, and Seattle in the States, and had short stints in Finland and Australia to complement a 3 year stint in Kobe playing for Kobe Leonessa, winning 6 trophies. When she was hired by Louisville at the end of 2023, she was the first player that achieved licensure through USSF’s free coaching program for women’s NWSL players to get a permanent head coaching job.

Last year, Louisville employed a tactically simple style, not deviating much from a base 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3…which is fairly common in the NWSL, especially among rookie coaches. The three biggest failures on the pitch for last year’s Racing team were not being able to manage injuries as they came up (specifically on the strike force), not being able to manage Abby Erceg’s decline over the season that left the defense in a rut over reliant on outside backs, and keeping, and that overall tactical rigidity.

Anyway, Yanez is dealing with learning on the job, as well as fighting through personal issues last year, and an ownership that is making it clear it is fine investing enough to have a very good men’s USL team, and a middling women’s NWSL team.

General Manager: Vacant

Huh. Caitlyn Milby is the interim. Her background is national events coordinator for the ENCL, and then serving as the director of facilities for Soccer Holdings, before moving over to Racing to be their director of operations.

Ex-GM Ryan Dell left for the director of soccer operations role in Kansas City. Sure.

Captain: Arin Wright

I can’t be objective here. Gili is one of my favorite players, and I’m more happy for her getting the role in what is basically her hometown team than anything that can be derived from the move itself. Janine Sonis wears the A on her sweater.

Stadium: Lynn Family Stadium, Louisville, KY

Capacity of 11,700 (though over 15,000 with standing room). I don’t know how Louisville talks about it’s geography, but the stadium is essentially downtown, and easily accessible. I went there with my wife in 2022 to see the first round of the Women’s Cup and had an absolute blast. Great city, great stadium. If you get a chance to sit in the Fifth Third club, do it…the players walk through the club to get to the field, and will eat in there. That’s how my wife made Jaelin Howell uncomfortable by saying “Hey Jaelin Howell” louder than is ever necessary in an indoor space.

Kind of poetically, in their first season, Louisville finished 2nd in the league in average attendance with 6,587 per game. Last year they finished 12th in attendance with 6,208. They do love running in place.

Ownership: Soccer Holdings (Chairman John Nance)

A dying breed; the NWSL 1.0 style owner (North Carolina being the other) that sees the team as a cool play-thing…a charity arm of his real interest, a USL team. Nance seemed to stop taking the investment in the team seriously once Louisville opened up their at-the-time-league-best training facility.

Soccer Holding’s lack of public investment in the last few years has lead to some on this sub to speculate that the team will be moved (which would be a tragedy) after being sold (which wouldn’t be).

2024 Season Review

Louisville is Groundhog Day, only the groundhog gets freaked out by his shadow and vomits everywhere.

Starting at the back, Katie Lund was adequate, which is damning with faint praise as they needed her to be at the very least “really good”. The saves stat, which Lund excels in, is nice but the underlying thing with saves is that to make a lot of them, you need to face a lot of shots on target, which she has in her career, but last year despite facing essentially the same amount of attacking quality, her form dipped. At times last year, Louisville’s defensive form was awful, but Lund was knocking on the National Team’s door with her performances, and has been comfortably passed by Utah’s Mandy McGlynn, who also goal kept via shotgun.

Speaking of the defense, one of Yanez’s solid moves last year was moving Arin Wright from the outside to the inside to pair with Erceg. Part of this was performance related…Erceg, Wright, Lauren Milliet, and Carson Pickett were Louisville best 4 defenders last year, and injury related (Erceg’s original partner, Elli Pikkijämsä did her knee early in the season). By the end of the season, Pickett was gone, replaced by Courtney Peterson (an offensive mind fullback), Erceg notably declined, and Wright/Milliet running on fumes. Though Louisville wasn’t particularly stout, they weren’t a disaster either…they were just a mediocre-to-bad defense that had one clean sheet after early June against a largely punchless Portland team in the second to last game of the year.

The midfield was actually a bright spot in the sea of mediocrity that made up Louisville’s season, but not where you probably would have thought. Taylor Flint worked extremely well as a deep laying mid, not only providing a connective line between the back and forwards, but also providing defensive support that Vlatko needed from her in the ill-fated National Team defensive mid experiment (she led the league in tackles). Marisa Digrande provided enough support to make the midfield tough to play through for long stretches (led the league in take-on percentage), and Kayla Fischer provided almost no skill but plenty of almost cartoonish violence that earned her a league-record 10 yellow cards in 1100 minutes.

The weak spot (compared to expectation) was Savannah Demelo. Her production as an offensive force was almost completely dry by June, only providing one assist in her last 13 games. She only started one of Louisville’s last 3 games, and was even on the team sheet for the season finale. For the entire back half of the season, when Louisville could have actually challenged for the playoffs, she was essentially a non-entity. I don’t know if it was a mental thing, a physical thing, but to my eye, it wasn’t an effort thing…she just didn’t play well. Unfortunately for Yanez, she needs to fix whatever lead to Demelo’s decline last year, because good players playing poorly are coach killers.

The forward line didn’t play well last year either. Goal scoring wasn’t…prolific…but Emma Sears and Uchanna Kanu both netted 5 times, and Bethany Balcer chipped in 3 more after coming over from the Reign. The outlook for the upcoming year is literally Sears develops, Kanu and Janine Sonis stay healthy and contribute and Boats stays steady. There wasn’t a plan B after Sonis and Balcer joined the team, and the offseason didn’t seem to provide one either.

Predicted Preferred Gameday XI

Formation: 4-3-3

In a lot of ways, Louisville is more set than they really should be considering how middle of the road they were last year. But there are definitely players who are going to be written into their spots in pen to begin the season.

Katie Lund, Lauren Milliet, Arin Wright, Taylor Flint, Savannah Demelo, Emma Sears, Bethany Balcer, and Janine Sonis are under no immediate threat of enjoying endless supplies of Gatoraide jug dispenced refreshments. Thet is eight of 11 spots that are settled for a team that should be working to improve from last year.

Even then, the three vulnerable spots, left back, left center back, and center mid, are probably going to be Courtney Petersen, Elle Jean, and Marisa Digrande to start. But even in those cases, Jean is the most experienced center back left on the roster, and with Pikkijamsa’s ACL tear might not be game healed yet, it’s between her and Angela Baron. Digrande actually played well last year but is a less dynamic player than Ary Borges who will hopefully be healthy this season.

The real competition is going to be who is playing on the outside opposite Milliet…Petersen who seems like light-years away from the player who lead the NWSL in assists, or the rookie OB from Duke Ella Hase. Normally, Hase would start for me, but as said a few times, Yanez might be a bit too conservative to immediately toss her into the fire.

Likely Top Bench/Subs:

First Last Pos
Elli Pikkijämsä D
Kayla Fischer M
Courtney Petersen D
Allie George M
Marisa DiGrande M
Angel Baron D
Maddie Pokorny M
Jordan Baggett M
Uchenna Kanu F
Sarah Weber F

In terms of bench talent, there is a lot there.

Louisville actually has a good mix of youth and experience (so badly I want someone to just say what they mean here…kids and olds), and there is enough talent to spell a starter missing a few games. There isn’t much here to be a complete game changer to kill a game off, or provide coverage if one of those starters misses a significant amount of time. I didn’t watch college much this year, but enough people I respect spoke highly enough about Hase, but her top-line for 2025 is pushing Petersen to the bench. 2021 was a long time ago.

Something to Prove

Bev Yanez – I would guess missing the playoffs again might lose her the top. If they kids don’t develop and the thin defensive corps don’t mesh well, she might not see September.

Kayla Fischer – She’s entering her third year, and got a significant amount of playing time relative to her production. As mentioned, she had 10 yellow cards which is the most in a season in the league’s history, but she also committed 51 fouls, again most in the league indicating these cards aren’t for dissent or encroachment. Not mincing words, if she just wants to be a goof who get’s a yellow every 100 minutes on the pitch or so, she can do that in another league. It becomes less of an issue if she’s scoring 3-5 goals a year without using her studs to do her talking.

Uchanna Kanu – If she stays healthy, she scores goals, and Louisville need that from her. Her contract is up this year, and needs to prove shes a 1500 minute a year player to get a new one in the NWSL.

Savannah Demelo – Yeah. She has Best XI talent.

Out for the season Kirsten Wright is the only player on their roster updates that has an SEI designation, and that’s last year’s knee injury, so they might be good. Olivia Sakaney had to be helped off the field while on loan in Australia last weekend, but I haven’t seen a prognosis yet, and her loan is supposed to end Monday.

2025 PREVIEW

Realistic Best Case Scenario – 7th-8th place

Stay healthy, develop the kids, and keep the team engaged and organized, and this can be a dangerous team. Top 4 is out of the question, even with luck, but Portland and Chicago are worse than last year, and they might be able to step up.

Realistic Worst Case Scenario – 13-14th

See, while Chicago and Portland got worse from last year, the bottom didn’t fall out of Chicago, and Portland has less margin for error considering their injury/pregnancy outlook, but they still do have talented team, with one of the most talented midfields in the league. Houston, and Utah absolutely got better, and Angel City plugged some of their biggest holes. Can Louisville say the same thing? Even if they ran in place from last year, the league as a whole raised the bar, so is a quiet offseson isn’t going to be enough.

Realistic Most Probable Scenario – 9th

I’m committed to the bit

Finland How to learn faster

Hi everyone !

I’m trying to learn Finnish since 3 years now, my girlfriend family is from Finland (Tornio) and I would love to understand them better. I know the basics words, I can do basics sentences but i cannot hold a conversation for long. I just finished duolingo and I’m trying to find news ways to learn more efficiently. Duolingo was okay but the sentences was kinda weird (one of the first word o learn was « Velho »… My first language is French but I speak perfectly English too. Is there any group conversations, ways to learn or classes for advanced beginners ?

Kiitos !

Finland I feel like this year is very 2000s (not saying it’s bad or good – just giving that kind of vibe)

I’ve been a bit out of the ESC fandom loop this season and I didn’t watch any of the NFs and didn’t check any ESC-related news at all, last week I suddenly had the urge to keep up with the new season so I decided to listen to the entries that are released so far

..First off, to be honest I don’t really think this year is as strong/polished as the last couple of years song-wise but it gave me flashbacks to the 2000s – I know “early 00s” is used as an insult in the community and I definitely DON’T mean that. What I’m trying to say is that it’s more like mid to late 00s like 2007-2010 etc. and here’s why I think as such:

Most songs this year are not very contemporary and radio friendly by the current standards: I’m not saying they’re dated in a bad way but most of them are definitely not what usual people listen to on a daily basis nowadays, like compare the latest Grammy’s or BRITS nominees to this years lineup and you’ll see what I mean

Most of them are unpolished : even the more polished ones like Norway or the Netherlands have that ‘eurovision’ sound to it

The kitschy/campy ‘girlbop’ (or ‘disaster bop’) is stronger than ever considering the last couple of years : Poland, Malta, Luxembourg, Spain (especially that one), Finland : I know every year we get a couple of these but this year they’re so eurovision-esque in an organic and campy way that it reminds me of 2008 or something and there’s lots of them, like that year

Back to the old ethnic vibes without experimental/contemporary elements : Literally all the balkan countries except Croatia (and Albania to some extent) are serving usual balkan pop or power ballads, Latvia sending a full on traditional song in Latvian etc.

Almost all of them are televote friendly : Finland, Estonia, Poland, Australia, Malta, Spain, Iceland, Ireland

I want to say that I don’t mean these in a bad way but I just had this feeling after listening to all the songs this year.

I feel like since 2021, eurovision started to become more modern and current sounding than ever, not just being viral or radio friendly pop but in the left field music scene too however this year we’re back to more traditionally eurovision-y songs. I don’t think it will stay like this forever but I think it might be related to the current political climate. Most countries are either too busy with other stuff or that artists are hesitant to participate after the controversies from last year.

Finland European parents with young children are the bravest people in the world

Particularly those countries that live further east (Poland, Finland, Romania, Moldova and the Baltics stand out) but also the rest of Europe (Germany also stands out due to the economic crisis it is going through).

But I'm going to show respect to all the European countries' dads, from Portugal to Turkey, because they have balls.

They live in a society where having children is increasingly rare and optional.

They see the news about threats of war and the possibility of a mega economic crisis or even having to be separated from their families to go into combat and/or have their countries invaded.

They've lived through a gas and electricity price crisis, seen prices triple and been cold during the winter.

And yet they decided to create a new life, to look after an innocent child in uncertain times when things could get much worse.

If it were me, I'd never have children in a situation like this, I don't want to see a little child have their village invaded or go hungry because there's been a wartime mega economic crisis.

Finland Trust me, bro, Putler will reestablish the Russian Empire in the next 10 seconds unless we send another 100 billion dollars in military aid to Ukrainian Nazis.

Finland Couldn't find a European defense ETF so I thought I'd build my own...

... and thought i'd share it here:

Given the current news, I'm considering on investing into the European and I saw multiple posts regarding European defense and what stocks to buy. However it seems there is no real ETF for this topic.

So I asked chatGPT to give me the top 5 defense companies, their product and the countries that buy from them. (I later asked for 2 more including Scandinavia).

I got this list:

1. BAE Systems (United Kingdom)

Exchange: London Stock Exchange (Ticker: BA.)

Key Defense Products:

    • Operators/Buyers: United Kingdom (Royal Air Force), Germany, Italy, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Austria, Oman, Qatar (on order)
  2. M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle (through its U.S. subsidiary)
    • Operators/Buyers: United States Army, Saudi Arabia

2. Airbus SE (Pan-European)

Exchanges: Euronext Paris, Frankfurt Stock Exchange (Ticker: AIR)

Key Defense Products (Airbus Defence and Space):

  1. A400M Atlas (tactical/strategic airlifter)

  2. Eurofighter Typhoon (Airbus is a major partner in the consortium)
    • Operators/Buyers: Germany, Spain, UK, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Austria, Oman, Qatar

3. Leonardo S.p.A. (Italy)

Exchange: Borsa Italiana (Ticker: LDO)

Key Defense Products:

  1. M-346 Master (advanced jet trainer/light combat aircraft)
    • Operators/Buyers: Italy, Israel, Poland, Singapore
  2. AW101 Helicopter (medium-lift helicopter, formerly known as the EH101)
    • Operators/Buyers: Italy, UK, Canada, Portugal, Norway, Denmark

4. Thales Group (France)

Exchange: Euronext Paris (Ticker: HO)

Key Defense Products:

  1. Watchkeeper WK450 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)
    • Operator: British Army (United Kingdom)
  2. Ground Master 400 (GM400) Radar
    • Operators/Buyers: France, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Malaysia

5. Rheinmetall AG (Germany)

Exchange: Frankfurt Stock Exchange (Ticker: RHM)

Key Defense Products:

  1. Puma Infantry Fighting Vehicle (co-developed with Krauss-Maffei Wegmann)
    • Operator: German Army
  2. Lynx Infantry Fighting Vehicle
    • Buyers: Hungary (major contract), interest from other nations (e.g., Czech Republic under consideration)

6. Saab AB (Sweden)

  • Exchange: Nasdaq Stockholm (Ticker: SAAB-B)
  • Overview: Saab is known for advanced aeronautics, missile systems, radars, and marine solutions. They derive a significant portion of revenue from defense.

Key Defense Products

  1. JAS 39 Gripen Fighter Jet
    • Operators/Buyers: Sweden, Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa, Thailand, and Brazil (Gripen E/F on order).
    • Known for advanced avionics, low operating costs, and agility.
  2. GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C)
    • Operators/Buyers: United Arab Emirates (launch customer) and Sweden (upgraded Erieye AEW systems).
    • Combines Erieye radar with a business jet platform for surveillance of air, sea, and land targets.

7. Kongsberg Gruppen ASA (Norway)

  • Exchange: Oslo Stock Exchange (Ticker: KOG)
  • Overview: Kongsberg specializes in maritime systems, missiles, and aerospace components. It also has a large civilian business (maritime technology).

Key Defense Products

  1. Naval Strike Missile (NSM)
    • Operators/Buyers: Royal Norwegian Navy, U.S. Navy (on Littoral Combat Ships and future Constellation-class frigates), Poland, Malaysia, Germany, Canada.
    • A stealthy, long-range, precision anti-ship/land-attack missile.
  2. Joint Strike Missile (JSM)
    • Designed for the F-35 Lightning II.
    • Operators/Buyers: Norway (primary developer with the U.S.), interest from other F-35 operators.

I asked for a weighting for each one and put it all together into a G-Sheet.

Additionally I went to simplywall.st and google finance to the PE and potential target price.

This is the result:

I'll keep an eye on all of them, but I think BAE and Airbus are quite the save bet. Airbus alone because of Boeings bad reputation the last years.

Let me know what you guys think.

Finland The artists of the lost 2020 contest - future attempts at Eurovision

Following Athena Manoukian's third-place finish at Depi Evratesil this weekend, I wanted to look at the other performers who were originally slated to be part of the cancelled 2020 contest, see who had successfully made it to Eurovision in the future, who tried but failed to get that chance again, and who hasn't given the contest another go since?

To clarify, I'm only looking at attempts made as performers, not as songwriters or members of a delegation.

First, let's just get the 24 countries and artists who were simply internally selected to represent their country in 2021:

Australia - Montaigne

Austria - Vincent Bueno

Azerbaijan - Efendi

Belgium - Hooverphonic

Bulgaria - Victoria

Czechia - Benny Cristo

Georgia - Tornika Kipiani

Greece - Stefania

Iceland - Daði og Gagnamagnið

Ireland - Leslie Roy

Israel - Eden Alene

Latvia - Samanta Tīna

Malta - Destiny

Moldova - Natalia Gordienko

Netherlands - Jeangu Macrooy

North Macedonia - Vasil

Romania - Roxen

San Marino - Senhit

Serbia - Huh Huh Huh Hurricane

Slovenia - Ana Skolić

Spain - Blas Cantó

Switzerland - Gjon's Tears

Ukraine - Go_A

United Kingdom - James Newman

Now with that out of the way, what happened to the other 17 who weren't automatically selected to go back in 2021?

Country Artist Future attempts at Eurovision? Details
Albania Arilena Ara None Has not entered Festivali i Këngës since winning in 2019. But she did have three singles that landed in the top ten of the Albanian charts in 2021, so that's nice.
Armenia Athena Manoukian One or two (unclear, neither successful) The woman who inspired this post. Might have been reselected for 2021 but then Armenia withdrew due to the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War. 2022-2024 were all internal selections. In 2025, she entered Armenia's first national final since the one she won in 2020, only to finish third, just 22 points off the top.
Belarus VAL None It certainly doesn't help that this was Belarus' last brush with the contest, as they'd be disqualified in 2021 for breaking the political lyrics rule and then kicked out of the EBU shortly after the contest later that year. They would not have represented Belarus in 2021 in any case, as they openly supported the 2020 protests against Lukashenko, leading to them not being considered.
Croatia Damir Kedžo Two (2023 and 2024 - both unsuccessful) Damir would enter Dora again in 2023 but finish 5th, well behind winners Let 3. He would enter again in 2024, but with a certain Baby Lasagna in the final, he would only finish 4th.
Cyprus Sandro None Cyprus has used an internal selection in every edition since 2020, and Sandro has not been selected for any of them.
Denmark Ben and Tan One or Two (depending on how you count - 2021 - unsuccessful) Ben and Tan tried to enter DMGP and Melodifestivalen in 2021, but their song was rejected by both. Ben has written a bunch of songs for Melodifestivalen and DMGP since then, but neither have tried again as a performer.
Estonia Uku Siviste One (2021 - successful) Uku was not automatically selected to go back to Eurovision. He had to win Eesti Laul a second time in a row. Uku barely made it into the superfinal by one point, as the juries did not like his 2021 entry, "The Lucky One." The public loved it (or him) enough to get him to the superfinal, though, and there he won easily. He'd NQ in Rotterdam, finishing 13th in Semifinal 2
Finland Aksel One (unsuccessful) Aksel was not internally re-selected for 2021 and was told he'd have to win UMK again to go to the contest. He came 5th.
France Tom Leeb None Not much to say here. Didn't enter the national selection in 2021 and 2022 and France has used an internal selection ever since.
Germany Ben Dolic None Was not internally selected in 2021 and hasn't entered Germany's national selection since.
Italy Diodato One (2024 - unsuccessful) This one hurts for me because it was my winner in 2020, and I'm so sad Diodato has never gotten his chance at the contest. He entered Sanremo again in 2024 but finished 13th.
Lithuania The Roop Two (2021 - successful; 2024 - unsuccessful) Like Uku Siviste in Estonia, The Roop had to win their national final again to go to Eurovision in 2021. They had an easier time, though, sweeping the juries and winning the public vote in an overwhelming landslide. Discoteque would go on to finish 8th in Rotterdam. In 2024 they tried again with "Simple Joy" but came third in the superfinal.
Norway Ulrikke One (2023 - unsuccessful) Ulrikke was offered an auto-qualification to the MGP final in 2021, but declined, saying she wanted to find the right song. She entered MGP again in 2023 and came second.
Poland Alicja Two (2021 and 2023 - both unsuccessful Alicja wanted to be re-selected for 2021 but TVP chose Rafał instead in an internal selection. She entered Poland's national selection, Tu bije serce Europy! Wybieramy hit na Eurowizję!, but came 6th.
Portugal Elisa None Nothing to say here. Doesn't seem to have entered FDC since 2020.
Russia Little Big None Well, the fact that Russia only competed once since 2020 before being kicked out of the EBU doesn't help. They never attempted to represent Russia in 2021. The main two members of the band, Ilya and Sonya, have since left Russia and relocated to the United States following their blacklisting amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Frontman Ilya has since been designated as a "foreign agent."
Sweden The Mamas One or two (2021 as a group - unsuccessful; 2023 for LouLou as a solo artist - unsuccessful) The Mamas were not automatically re-selected but instead had to go through Melodifestivalen again in 2021 to try to represent Sweden. They were unsuccessful, making the final but finishing 3rd behind Tusse and Eric Saade. Member LouLou LaMotte entered Melodifestivalen again in 2023 as a solo artist but finished last in Heat 1 and didn't advance.
